Taking Ownership of Your Health - Oxygen

Taking Ownership of Your Health - Oxygen

This episode is the first of a four-part series on Taking Ownership of Your Health by getting back to the 4 basics needed to survive and thrive. Oxygen is essential for life. There are many other things that happen when you're deprived without oxygen and in today’s episode we will learn that and more.Your nose is designed to help you breathe safely, efficiently, and properly.  18% less oxygen gets to our brain through mouth breathing which contributes to complications and illnesses such as  heart disease,  sleep apnea,  ADHD, ADD and diabetes and more. So how do we correct that? Scheduling a  professional assessment with me at: https://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/ will be helpful. Key Takeaways:-How do people, animals and plants use oxygen?-The Top 9 Plants that Provide Oxygen-The 4 goals of Myofunctional Therapy-Why Does the Brain Need Oxygen? Resources:- https://www.thoughtco.com/oxygen-facts-606572- Helmenstine, Anne Marie, Ph.D. "Get 10 Interesting Facts About Oxygen." 10 Reasons to See an Oral Myofunctional Therapist

10 Reasons to See an Oral Myofunctional Therapist

Today we are going to talk about oral myofunctional therapy! What is it? What do we do as oral myofunctional therapists? Why would you even need an oral myofunctional therapist? Great question!  The short answer: You should not need one. If you breathe through our nose all day and all night. Myofunctional therapy is physical therapy type exercises for the muscles of the face and muscles of the tongue, swallowing, breathing and everything surrounding the oral cavity. The goal is really simple, yet so many of us breathe through our mouths now, especially with wearing masks. There are four goals of myo functional therapy.-You have to breathe through your nose all day and all night.-You have to have your tongue in the top of your mouth, called the roof, all day and all night.-You have to have your lips together so your mouth closes to get a good lip seal.-You have to swallow correctly and that includes chewing and eating and drinking liquids and swallowing saliva. Here’s the thing, all of these exercises seem so simple in theory, they're very very simple and accomplishing those goals, Sounds easy... right?  We all should just do this normally and naturally if you think about it. You should not need an oral myofunctional therapist if you can do this on your own. However, what we're trying to do through teaching these exercises is really restoring normal function in our patients, so it's normal, natural and healthy to breath,  just taking a patient from being a chronic mouth breather, to a consistent nasal breather during the daytime and at nighttime, will dramatically improve their overall health. 3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode -What is Myofunctional Therapy? What are the goals of Myofunctional Therapy? -What is an Oral Myofunctional Therapist? What are the functions of an Oral Myofunctional Therapist? -Why do you need an Oral Myofunctional Therapist? What are the ten reasons to see one?

It All Starts In The Mouth

My experience during childhood led me to study the effects of oral hygiene on our overall health. We often took what happens inside our mouths for granted and only sought help when it starts getting painful. Why do we always neglect the signs and symptoms that our mouths are showing us?In this episode, I will be sharing facts about how crucial our oral health is in detecting long-term diseases and the importance of good oral health to our bodies. "Our mouth is our gateway to our body, and it's key to our overall health." 3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode-Why do we treat our mouth as an isolated part of our body? Why do we often neglect the signs and symptoms found in our mouth when it could potentially lead to a much-dreaded disease? -Why should you follow your instincts? Why aren’t we listening to our gut feeling when we know something is wrong with our bodies? -Why the choices, habits, and things we teach affects our long term healthWe started using our mouths when we were born, so why aren't we critical of our oral health? www.dentalhygiene411.com

Adrenaline Dominance with Dr. Platt

Adrenaline Dominance with Dr. Platt

Following the premature death of his mother from breast cancer, Dr. Platt began the journey of assimilating his knowledge about hormones and the importance of keeping them in balance for optimum health and wellness. Through the observation of thousands of patients, he uncovered secrets to the body’s master system, namely hormones. In 1995, he opened a clinic in Palm Desert, California where he has been consulting with his patients and clients employing his Platt Protocol, a natural approach to hormone balance and wellness.Since 1997, the Platt Wellness Center has been a pioneer in the research and advancement of the therapeutic use of progesterone cream and other bio-identical hormones. Platt is considered an important pioneer in observational, functional, alternative, and allopathic medicine focused on bio-identical hormones and adrenaline overload. His award-winning books, “The Miracle of Bio-Identical Hormones”, How I Lost My...fatigue, hot flashes, ADHD, ADD, fibromyalgia, PMS, osteoporosis, weight, sexual dysfunction, anger, migraines… and “Adrenaline Dominance,A Revolutionary Approach to Wellness”, detail his Platt Protocol: solutions for conditions modern medicine considers ‘incurable’ and that are ‘treated’ with drugs, endless office visits and tests as well as billions spent on research. He has identified many conditions that respond positively to bio-identical hormones, especially progesterone. Conditions that affect millions of people worldwide such as: ADHD, bedwetting, fibromyalgia, autism, depression, bipolar disorder, addictions, weight gain, anger, road rage, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and more.Platt wellness centers goal is to facilitate healing using the innate power of the body to do so. Suggestions will be made to help accomplish this goal. Allowing yourself to deal with the underlying cause of why you are not well will provide you with all the tools that you need.Dr. Platt had found that treating the underlying cause of problems eliminated the need for most medications as they most often treat the symptoms and not the underlying cause of the disease.https://plattwellness.com/Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorBURST- https://brst.link/134d Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/Baby teeth eruption Chart

Toddler Teeth Tips Age 1-3

Toddler Teeth Tips Age 1-3

Teething and Terrible 2’sI am still not sure why they are called the terrible 2”s?I think it should be called the terrible tweens! Two was a breeze! I loved that age. She did not talk back, was cuddly and inquisitive! As far as teeth go, between about 12 and 24 months, most toddlers are getting teeth this whole phase. While some toddlers make it through teething with no issues, others experience symptoms that might include drooling, pain, crankiness, irritability, sleeplessness, inflamed sore gums, rash and relentless chewing. Like most things at this age it is harder on the parents than the kids. By the age of two, the second set of molars erupt, giving your toddler a full set of baby teeth, those same symptoms can intensify for some children. You are going to want to keep a close eye out for signs of future problems.Does your child snore?Does your child show other signs of disturbed sleep?Have long pauses in breathing?Tossing and turn in the bed?Have chronic mouth breathing during sleep?Have night sweats or wet the bed?You will want to establish a dental home in case there is an emergency. If you are a patient of record you will get in faster.Thoughts Values and beliefsI am a huge believer that our own thoughts, values and beliefs impact our decisions. Those beliefs impact the value we place on everything. They impact whether we even go to a doctor or dentist for treatment in the first place. They impact the choices we make. If we choose to go to a doctor or dentist and you do not agree with the treatment they have presented, you have the right to refuse treatment or go someplace else. Do your research and find a provider that is in line with your beliefs.Keep in mind that each doctor and dentist have their own belief system based on their experiences in life which affects the way they establish their practice. It is not fair for you to dictate what Treatment the doctor or dentist provides if it is not in line with their beliefs.Picking the right provider is key to a mutually respectful relationship. Knowing what you are looking for and asking questions when you make an appointment will save you and your child a bad experience.Finding a dentist is like dating! It may take kissing a few frogs before you find the right one.Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorBURST- https://brst.link/134d Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/Baby teeth eruption Chart

How to care for Your Baby's Mouth 6 to 12 months

How to care for Your Baby's Mouth 6 to 12 months

In order to survive and thrive we need four things for our body Oxygen, Water, Nutrition and Sleep. All of these things start with our mouth and our nose.We treat our mouth and nose like isolateds parts of our body, the truth is if we want to be in the best possible health... our mouth, nose and teeth are a great place to start to live a healthy happy life. So why not start caring for our mouth and our nose as soon as we are born? Our mouth is the gateway into our body and if we are not breathing correctly and our mouth has disease we are not as healthy as we think. Our apple watches even tell us to breathe. Our teeth are the strongest surface and our tongue is the strongest muscle in our body and we put them last on our to-do list to care for.Sucking and chewing are required for nursing and help develop the facial muscles and stimulate stem cell growth for stronger bones and a better airway. A few hundred years ago Mother breastfed till a toddler was 2-5 years old sometimes longer it is frowned upon today. The longer a child spent chewing and sucking the better their airways, jaw and facial muscles developed. We had a lower incidence of snoring, grinding, crooked teeth , ADHD and sleep apnea. We do not give much thought to how we breathe. We usually don’t even check to see how our kids are breathing until there is a problem. So let's start with breathing.Your baby can't even breathe through their mouth until they are 3 Months old. So keeping their nose clear is very important. I recommend Xlear with xylitol. If your baby, infant or toddler begins to breathe through the mouth their flight or flight system is activated. The body thinks it is in an emergency state.Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorBURST- https://brst.link/134d Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/Baby teeth eruption Chart

Caring For Your Baby’s Mouth Birth-6 months

Caring For Your Baby’s Mouth Birth-6 months

Getting to Know Your Little OneThe first few weeks of your newborn's life is an exciting time. Being responsible for this tiny creature can also be a little scary, particularly if you're not familiar with how a newborn looks and behaves. After all, they don’t come with a manual. Google is a great resource these days. We did not have the access to the information you do now when my daughter was a newborn. If you feel anxious or uncertain about any part of caring for your baby, don't hesitate to call your health care professionals, family or friends who have had experience caring for a newborn. Everyone has an opinion so take advice with a grain of salt, use what works for you and file the rest.Your Baby’s Mouth is important: What to ExpectIf you're a new parent, there can be a lot of things to worry about. Although infants usually do not have teeth when they are born, it is still important to care for their mouth from the start. 1 in 3000 babies are born with a tooth. We will talk more about teething in next week's episode. As soon as your baby is born it is ok to look inside their mouth. I recommend you look to see if they have any tethered tissues. What does that mean, a lip or tongue tie. As with most topics there are different opinions on the subject. If your baby is having trouble latching this is the first place I would investigate. If you are nursing it should not be painful to the Mom. If you are bottle feeding you may need to change the size or shape to get a better latch. I talked about the difference between breast vs bottle feeding last week and recommend some books as resources on nursing. Diane Bahr is an amazing resource on infants' mouth growth and development. If your newborn has a tethered lip or tongue it can have many effects as they grow, other than latching, it can affect their eating habits, swallowing, speech and breathing.Getting it released at an early age, while hard for a parent, is much easier on the child as they will not even have a memory of the event. I recommend working with an oral myofunctional therapist to help with proper positioning and posture. What else might you see in your little one mouth? For full Blog go to dentalhygieine411.com

Good Mouth Health and Feeding Your Baby

Good Mouth Health and Feeding Your Baby

Last week we talked about pregnancy and your baby, how baby teeth begin forming and a pregnant mom's diet during pregnancy as a very important part of healthy tooth development.Today I am going to dive into the breastfeeding vs bottle feeding debate. My opinion and research of how feeding your baby affects your baby’s mouth, teeth and face growth and development. What you eat during your pregnancy affects the development of your baby which includes their teeth.Your baby’s primary teeth begin mineralizing and building the inner part of the tooth, called dentin, around the sixth week and the hard enamel layer that covers it known as enamel around the third or fourth month of pregnancy. While teeth are the hardest surface of the body and the only part of our skeleton we clean they are not indestructible and are vital to the growth and development of your baby.Pregnancy and the first years of your baby’s life are very significant and memorable, you will want to take good care of yourself and get your baby off to a healthy start in life. Their mouth is important to their growth and development, it affects eating, sleeping, speech, behavior, self esteem and overall health and wellness. After the Baby is Born:Most babies are not born with teeth at birth, however, it does happen occasionally! The majority of baby’s begin to get their primary teeth in their mouth at about six months of age. My daughter however, did not get her first tooth until she was 13 months. So don’t panic if your baby does not follow the “normal” pattern of eruption. Most children develop a full set of 20 teeth by the age of three. Having healthy, strong baby teeth will help your child chew and swallow easily, speak clearly, smile, and provide face shape.Nursing plays an important role in the shape of your babyface and palital development. The roof of your baby’s mouth is the floor of their nasal cavity. As a dental hygienist and oral myofunctional therapist I prefer breastfeeding it is not always possible. There is not a lot of discussion that happens about ways to feed your baby, yet they are crucial to mouth development.www.dentalhygiene411.com

Pregnancy, Your Mouth and Your Baby

Pregnancy, Your Mouth and Your Baby

Taking care of yourself should be first on the top of your do list if you are planning on starting a family or are already pregnant. After all if you are not healthy chances are your baby is not as healthy as they can be.A healthy mouth is not always something we think about, let alone put at the top of our list when we are planning for a baby.Did you know…….Your baby’s teeth begin to develop between the third and sixth months of pregnancy. Before you even give birth. To help the teeth develop they need enough vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, Vitamins A,C,D and calcium to name a few.The health of your mouth affects the health of your baby.Having a baby is an exciting time in your life! Ready or not there is so much to consider when starting a family, you want to do everything possible to give your little bundle of joy a happy healthy life.Your body will be going through a lot of changes and that includes your mouth. When you are pregnant an increase in hormones can exaggerate the way your gums react to plaque buildup. You may notice that your gums are puffy, sore, or bleed easily. If you have puffy gums before you are pregnant it will get much worse when you are pregnant and can have negative effects on your baby. Like low birth weight or preterm delivery.Pregnancy gingivitis can happen as early as the first month of pregnancy. It is the plaque and lack of brushing the gums properly, not the hormones that lead to gingivitis. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, an early stage of gum disease caused by the buildup of plaque, (a sticky colorless, biofilm containing bacteria) that is left undisturbed. If you have gum disease, it could affect your baby’s birth weight. Your baby can be smaller or be delivered sooner than anticipated. To prevent pregnancy gingivitis, brush twice a day and floss once a day. I could not use toothpaste during my pregnancy without getting sick. So, I skipped the toothpaste and used a mouth rinse after brushing to freshen my breath. The health of your mouth is important to your overall health, but it is equally important to the future health of your baby. Make your oral health care a part of your prenatal care routine. The health of your mouth is just as important after you deliver your baby.Maintaining a routine for yourself will also ensure you create a good routine for your infant and toddler. Our children mimic what we do so we need to set a good example.Tell- show -do worked well for me and my daughter, as well as the kids I see in my day to day practice.Brushing twice a day, morning and night, will set both you and your baby up for success and reduce your chances of dental disease and other diseases.Always do what you are comfortable with and trust your gut instincts when It comes to your health and the health of your baby.A Healthy Mouth- Healthy Mom- Healthy Baby.Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorBURST- https://brst.link/134d Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/

Chamomile to sleep. The list goes on Google is a great resource.I have a friends Keith and Jane Knerr started a loose leaf tea company in 2017. Their blend taste amazing both hot and cold! Much better than Starbucks tea. I am not much of a coffee drinker. Love the smell hate the taste. The tea is packaged fresh with their air-tight/no light bronze resealable pouches. They are open to trying combinations.Three recommendations to store your loose leaf tea:Keep in an airtight preferable dark container.Keep free from moisture. Do not store your loose leaf tea in a refrigerator or freezer, this will introduce moisture and prematurely age or mold your tea.Keep loose leaf tea in a cool, dry place. A kitchen cupboard is a great place to store tea.Tell us how you steep your tea?Boil water in your tea kettleWhile waiting for water to boil, add the appropriate amount of loose leaf tea to your tea infuser.Place the tea infuser inside your teapot or mug. Tip: Double the amount of tea you use when making iced teaSteep for 1.5 to 2 minutes for full-leaf, or to your taste. I like it on the lighter side. 5 Most Common Dental Problems

5 Most Common Dental Problems

We don’t think much about our mouth and our teeth and what they do for us, despite the fact that we use them everyday; biting, tearing, chewing, chatting, and smiling. So, why don’t we take better care of our mouths? The top 4 things we need to survive and thrive start with our mouth and nose. We don’t realize just how important they are until we lose them. Sometimes, no matter how much we try, dental problems can still arise. After all, our mouths are a window into our body and are technically a living thing. You should always be on the lookout for warning signs that something is wrong with your teeth and gums, be proactive about getting them checked with your local dentist before you have pain. Today, we’re going to be chatting about some of the common dental problems, how you can spot them, and what you can do to treat them. 1. Tooth decay2. Enamel erosion/ gum recession/sensitivity3. Gingivitis4. Gum Disease5. Toothache To protect your mouth and teeth from infections, prevention is my go to recommendation. You will want to be diligent and consistent with your oral hygiene, be aware of correct tongue posture, brushing, flossing, breathing through your nose, watching your diet, all things we have discussed previously. These are the 5 most common dental problems and things you can do to treat and hopefully prevent them. Seeing your favorite dental professional earlier rather than later will ensure you’re keeping up with oral hygiene and find problems before they cause pain and are costly to repair. Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorBURST- https://brst.link/134d Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/ https://sheree.mynuskin.comMy BlogMy YouTube ChannelNUSKIN https://sheree.mynuskin.com

MS Warrior Queen Wendy Bjork

MS Warrior Queen Wendy Bjork

I had the pleasure of interviewing Weny Bjork she is known as the MS warrior Queen! She is Empowering ladies with MS to bring out their Inner MS Warrior Queen™!She has been dealing with the monster, called Multiple Sclerosis since she was 15. It started when she was 12 or 13 with migraine headaches, and then the symptoms escalated from there. So just knowing that you have someone in your corner, somebody to walk with you by your side is so comforting. When she was looking for someone to help her figure out how to feel better she couldn't find anybody that just knew where she was coming from, and didn't want to just fix her.She wanted to have someone who wanted to do things differently. Just figure out how to make things simpler, it takes some diligence, and you have to be committed. For example, knowing all the chemicals that are in your house, there's been 8000 synthetic chemicals created in our country since the 40s. That's a huge number. And we don't know what those do to us. We don't know what happens when they're mixed with other products we use, but it's just stuff you throw in your cart at the store because its what our Moms used. We don’t think anything about it. That's just one tiny piece of it. This is a huge puzzle that we are living in, and living with, because we can't see what's actually going on inside our body until we start having symptoms, such as MS.That's why she created her four cornerstones program to help walk with you on your journey to help you manage MS, because we have to have love for ourselves, worrying about what's in our future or what might be happening, doesn't help anybody. Her four cornerstones program focuses on making small changes starting with creating a positive mindset even when things get hard. Then Body what food, drinks and products you should avoid putting in your body.Relationships with yourself, family and coworkers. Environment what are the hidden toxins in our environment we interact with on a daily basis and knowing how to replace those with healthier plant based solutions. She is here in your corner and wants to help you. After 30 years or more of dealing with MS It's her mission to help you live better! What is the Best Toothbrush

What is the Best Toothbrush

This is one of the top questions I get asked on a daily basis! While It would be easy to just tell you my favorite and why I love it. I would be doing you a disservice. Why?When it comes to health care there is not a one size fits all! Ever! This includes your mouth. I am a huge promoter of prevention and what action you can take to have a healthy mouth and body so you can live a long happy life.Today we are going to talk about how to pick out a toothbrush for yourself, infant, toddler or another member of your family. The toothbrush that you use, depends on the age and size of your child. Smart parents like to start caring for their infants gums before the teeth come in and that can be very helpful to get them used to you putting your hands in their mouth. You begin by using a wet washcloth, gauze or a small silicone finger brush. There are lots of options being marketed towards parents to brush their infants' gums. I love the baby banana brush and the silicone finger brushes or you can just use a wet washcloth,Once your baby gets teeth in their mouth, you will want to start brushing them as soon as they come in. What you want to find is a toothbrush that has a soft bristle head and one that's small enough to fit in your child's mouth. There are so many toothbrushes that are marketed for children, I love tepe products for manual toothbrushes and their products are perfect as the kids get older, there are different sizes and shapes to get in all of the nooks and crannies. I used more than one brush and a water flosser on my daughter. You will need to see what works best for you. It has everything to do with your mindset, beliefs and personal experiences what will or will not work for you. If you are not a fan of electric toothbrushes your brain will justify your thoughts. So being open will go a long way to finding the products that are the right fit for your family. In general, soft toothbrushes are the way to go to prevent gum recession and enamel abrasion, remember the harder you scrub is bad for your gumsSo in all , remember to always use a soft toothbrush and if you aren't sure which soft toothbrush is best for your personal lifestyle, the best person to ask is your dental professional. They can recommend the best products for your individual mouth.. What they recommend will be based on their personal beliefs, experience and expertise. Remember dentistry is not a one size fits all! You may need to try different products until you find the right fit for you and your family like I did.I hope this eliminates some of the confusion when you walk down the toothpaste and toothbrush aisle. What is the Best Toothpaste for Kids

What is the Best Toothpaste for Kids

What’s the best toothpaste for kids?Another question I get asked a lot.Going to a store and looking in the toothpaste aisle can be super overwhelming. How do you know which one to choose! Which one will be best for your child?”Well, for me it was trial and error, My daughter hated toothpaste when she was little, the taste, texture and smell. I purchased 12 different brands back then, tried them all and now there are even more choices. For years I just brushed her teeth with a wet toothbrush and used my finger to apply MI Paste after brushing, this was our routine until she was around six. It was then I discovered Colgate watermelon toothpaste and as long as we only used a smear she agreed to use toothpaste. The Dental Hygiene 411 team has you covered with some options, so you have an idea of what is available on the market for you to try. We’re sharing a quick guide to toothpaste for kids and offering suggestions and a few of our favorites.I am giving you permission to not use toothpaste if your child spits it out at you like my daughter did.Toothpaste is not for everyone! I would rather you get the tooth brush in their mouth and remove plaque rather than spending precious time with the toothpaste battle. There are many things that not only cause cavities but prevent them as well. Even with what I did for a living, I had no idea as a new Mom everything I needed to know about a healthy mouth and how it is all connected. What I share are things I wish I had known back then.If you follow me you know I feel toothpaste and toothbrushes are a personal choice and there is no one size fits all in dentistry. I like options. So we are providing some. For me personally, I get canker sores easily, I found the toothpaste I use makes a difference as to how often I get them. So again, I tried many brands of toothpaste. It has changed over the years. Below are the two we use, love and that work for our family now. We love them so much I became an ambassador for the first two companies listed here. EP 60 : Twenty Two Subtle Signs and Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

EP 60 : Twenty Two Subtle Signs and Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

We all have good and bad days and, sometimes, so do our bodies depending on how active we are or how sensitive our body is to outside influences. Our body is constantly giving us signs. From mild signs and symptoms to severe ones, many health conditions make their presence known by ‘bothering’ your body and some are more subtle. It’s our responsibility to notice what our bodies are trying to tell us.As soon as you notice any unusual changes in your body, see your doctor. Sudden fatigue, weight loss, unexplained headaches, bleeding gums, anything you think doesn’t have a clear explanation could mean something more, so do not ignore it. With that in mind, we intend to explain things away. That is what I did for years. Let’s take a look at some of the subtle signs of deadly health issues hiding in plain sight!Do you see a pattern with signs and symptoms many are often overlooked because they are way too subtle. I am guilty of overlooking and blatantly ignoring many of these signs explaining them away as stress related.Regardless of why they are signs that should not be ignored, better to find out it is nothing now than blow it off and find out you have cancer and it has progressed because you ignored what your body was trying to tell you.I felt like I did not have the time or money. Now I am spending way more of both of those currencies due to my choice. I get to spend more time with my family but instead of making fun memories I layed in bed for weeks while they take care of me.Please learn from my mistakes. Prevention and early diagnosis is the better way to go than the road I chose.Staying healthy is an important commitment to make to yourself. Being proactive about your lifestyle and health care is an easy way to ensure you're making the best possible decisions for yourself.Trust me when I say it is a different life when you are sick, when you don’t have your health you miss out on a lot of moments you can never get back.We as Americans do not put our health first, it is apparent by how we take care of our mouths, how we eat, exercise and the fact that we want everything at our fingertips. There is a pill for our ill. What is convenience costing us? Our healthcare system treats sick people and it is a trillion dollar a year business. We all have family members that have had cavities, heart disease, diabetes alzheimer's and cancer. Many of these illnesses are preventable. Awareness and knowledge are power. If Covid taught us nothing it is that a weakened immune system makes us more susceptible to illness.Does healthier food cost more? Yes they do. Do I hear going to the doctor or dentist is expensive? Yep everyday. If I could go back and be consistent with what I put in and on my body with the water I drank, the foods I ate, the products I chose, yearly check ups. I would. But I can't. I can only move forward and share my story and experiences with others. Will I change the world? Probably not we are creatures of habit. But I can make a difference to the people who follow me. I don’t have all the answers no one does. I know I have helped thousands of people over my 30 years as a dental hygienist. When I get a big hug from a child that is no longer in pain and has a cavity free dental visit, I know I have done my part as little as it may be, I made a difference to her. That is what makes continuing my education worth it, so I teach parents what to look for and where to get help for their kiddos. Having Cancer made me take pause and ask what I can do to make the world a better place. Thank you for taking the time reading, listening, watching and sharing. It does take a village, each of us has our own community of family and friends we do need each other.Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorwww.burstoralcare.com Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/ https://sheree.mynuskin.comMy BlogMy YouTube Channel

EP 59 : Things You Can do To Improve Oral Health

EP 59 : Things You Can do To Improve Oral Health

We do not fully appreciate the importance oral health has on our overall health. The fact of the matter is, the delicate balance of bacteria in your mouth is as important to your health as your gut microbiome. When certain bacteria become overgrown, various oral problems start to develop.Your oral microbiome is like your gut microbiome in the sense that it needs to be well-balanced in order to support optimal health. Even otherwise harmless bacteria can have pathogenic effects if the balance gets too disrupted. However, while ingesting probiotics will improve the balance of bacteria in your gut, this strategy does not work for your oral cavity. Instead, the key to improving your oral microbiome is, first and foremost, to cease the indiscriminate killing of microbes in your mouth.Everyone is different in our genetic makeup.Develop a Comprehensive Oral Health PlanCaring for your teeth and gums is an essential part of your overall health and wellness. It’s important to address nutrition, oral care, and the products you use.To summarize, here’s a five-step plan that can help you improve your oral health this year:1. Reduce your net carbohydrate intake to meet your insulin level requirement.2. Brush twice or three times a day, 30 to 60 minutes after drinking and/or eating.3. Use a non fluoridated toothpaste, or make your own using natural ingredients.4. Floss daily.5. Pull with coconut oil once a dayThis article originally appeared at Mercola.Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorwww.burstoralcare.com Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/ https://sheree.mynuskin.comMy BlogMy YouTube Channel

EP 58 : Top Ten Reasons To Visit Your Dentist Regularly

EP 58 : Top Ten Reasons To Visit Your Dentist Regularly

People like to avoid the dentist for many different reasons. They had a bad experience. They are embarrassed, they are afraid they will be yelled at, made to feel guilty or they don’t like pointy things in their mouth. Others simply don’t think they have the time, or they might not want to fit it into their budget.Whatever your reasons are for not going to the dentist, here are these dental hygienists' suggestions for not putting off your appointment and why you should schedule a visit to the dentist now rather than put it off.Let's start with reason #10 to visit the dentist. We Touch our Face MoreDid you know we touch our face 16 times an hour and that was before we started wearing a mask? Now we touch our face more than ever adjusting our masks pulling it out to breathe. That bacteria is going into our mouths! Which is what a mask is supposed to prevent! Are you washing your hands more? We are breathing through our mouth more as well. Did you know when you breathe through your mouth we bypass the benefits air going through our nose does for us our nose warms the air and filters out bacteria? You are getting 18% less oxygen if you breathe through your mouth. Breathing through your mouth causes dry mouth and gingivitis. Are your gums puffy or bleeding? Breathing through your mouth is becoming a bad habit now that we are wearing masks.Clean the Plaque and Tartar off Your TeethNo one is perfect! No matter how diligent you are with brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can and will still start to build up around your teeth. The sooner you see a dentist the easier it is to get off. While you many might not consider this an urgent problem, plaque and tartar can lead to serious complications in your body. Your mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria that can start to seriously affect not just your oral health, but your overall health as well.Detect – and Treat – Problem EarlyYour mouth is an early warning system into what is going on in your body. The sooner you detect a problem, the easier it is to treat. Gingivitis is easier to deal with than periodontal disease; cavities and a simple filling are better than a root canal, and a root canal is better than extracting a tooth.By seeing your dentist often, we will be able to monitor your oral health and detect issues early. With early intervention, time, cost, and recovery are all greatly reduced – allowing you to have a happy, healthy smile, while you can spend your hard-earned money on something other than your mouth and teeth.Dental Disease is SilentNot every dental problem results in pain, and serious conditions can go unnoticed until it’s too late. You will need x-rays to catch a problem sooner rather than when you can see it with your own eyes. An impacted wisdom tooth, for example, might only be visible with an X-Ray, to see it is butted up against a tooth in your mouth causing a cavity below the gum line and can get treatment before you lose two teeth. Or you might have a cavity that we can keep from turning into a root canal There are so many things going on in your mouth without you even realizing it.Being able to look at your mouth and diagnose things sooner might even save your life.Prevent Gum Disease and Periodontal DiseaseGum disease is one of the most common illnesses in the world. In America alone, almost 50% of the adult population – and 70% of the population over the age of 65 – have gum disease. Gum disease is hard to notice at first, as the obvious signs (swelling and bleeding) only appear after the infection has taken hold. Seeing your dentist and having your gums measured is the best way to know if your gums are healthy or not.Periodontal disease affects the tooth and bone and can result in teeth falling out or needing extraction. Conditions like gum disease and periodontal disease are more likely to occur in people who have an underlying medical condition. Like diabetes or heart disease. These patients need even more frequent checkups – 3-4 per year, rather than 1-2 – to prevent reoccurrence of the diseases.Lower the Chances of Cardiovascular Problems and Other Health ConditionsPeople with gum disease are two to three times more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or other serious cardiovascular events. Pregnant women with gum disease are mor3e likely to deliver early or have a smaller baby. . Preventing or treating disease helps keep these numbers down, and your overall health in check.Set a Good Example for ChildrenOne of the reasons people often dislike the dentist is having a poor experience as a child. This might be an experience the child has had, or it might be because a child has grown up with parents who are anxious themselves.Use of Insurance BenefitsIf you’ve got dental coverage with your health insurance, you should know that your benefits don’t “rollover” from one year to the next. Once your coverage period has expired, you lose any benefits you didn’t use. If you’ve got dental benefits, using them for your regular checks and cleans is a great way to get what you already paid for, and keep your mouth at the same time.Keep Your Smile Bright and HealthyTeeth whitening is one of the most popular dental treatments. While teeth are naturally not supposed to be perfectly white, a lot of food, drinks, and personal habits can stain the teeth much more than normal.Your regular checkup and clean will help keep your teeth brighter and healthier for longer without needing whitening. If you do get teeth whitening, your regular checkups and cleanings will keep your teeth whiter for longer.A Healthy Mouth is a Healthy Body and a Healthy Life! What we put in our mouths, how we take care of our mouths, and whether or not we are watching for the signs it is telling us, are the three main areas of focus to have not only a healthy mouth but also a healthy body.Going to the dentist is just one thing you can do to keep your mouth teeth and gums healthy.Watch for more podcasts on what steps you can take to keep your mouth and a mouth you care for healthy for life!Resources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorwww.burstoralcare.com Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/ https://sheree.mynuskin.comMy BlogMy YouTube Channel

EP 57 : Your Mouth, is the portal into Your Body

EP 57 : Your Mouth, is the portal into Your Body

Just how can your mouth affect your body, to start you need to understand what happens in your mouth. Plaque and bacteria buildup on teeth the longer they go undisturbed the more they multiply. When you eat or drink you feed them creating an acid making both your teeth and gums susceptible to infection. The immune system intervenes to attack the bacterial infection to keep the gums from becoming inflamed and bleeding. If the infection is allowed to continue without disruption the inflammation continues.Dental infections are silent; you do not feel them until a later stage. It can spread to the face, skull, bloodstream, even the heart, liver and kidneys. If you have bleeding gums, your tooth aches, you have a fever, earache, or pain in your jaw or shoulders, you will need to see a professional your physician, dentist or periodontist for treatment as soon as possible, before you get a toothache or worse a systemic infection. The # 1 thing your body need to survive is oxygen.Every part of your body needs oxygen to survive. It’s important to establish nasal breathing as soon as possible at any stage of life. Nasal breathing has important sensory and neurological functions that provide 18% more oxygen to your body and it’s the foundation of all proper breathing patterns.Mouth breathing, on the other hand, contributes to many structural and functional problems and contributes to an avalanche of health issues.Even when mouth breathing is corrected postural and oral muscle functional issues can remain and need to be addressed with Oral Myofunctional Therapy. An assessment will help to determine if you need further treatment. It may also be necessary to see a dentist or ear, nose and throat physician to correct structural issues and optimise the airway size.I have only touched on the surface of how your mouth is connected to the health of your body.www.dentalhygiene411.com

EP 56 : 9 Things You Should Know About Baby Teeth

EP 56 : 9 Things You Should Know About Baby Teeth

It is a significant milestone is when your baby goes from gummy grins to that cute toothy smile. Newly erupting baby teeth serve an essential role in the development of your baby’s teeth and mouth. How to care for your baby's gums and new teethStart by wiping your baby’s gumsEven before your baby has their first tooth, it's a good idea to get into the habit of wiping his/her gums with gauze or a soft wet washcloth during bath time or after feeding. You don't need to use any toothpaste yet.Bacteria in the mouth usually can't harm the gums before the teeth erupt, however, your baby can get “thrush” even without teeth, which is a yeast infection in the mouth. You won’t know when the teeth start to break through the gums, so you'll want to start early. Getting your baby used to having his/her mouth cleaned as part of a daily routine should make it easier to transition into toothbrushing when teeth appear.Signs of TeethingEvery baby experiences teething differently. Some babies have no symptoms, while others seem to go through a lot of pain. Some common teething symptoms your baby might experience include:DroolingSucking or bitingIrritabilitySwelling or redness of gumsEar rubbingFacial rashMild temperatureFor more information go to:www.dentalhygiene411.com

EP 55 : What Is Bottle Mouth?

EP 55 : What Is Bottle Mouth?

Bottle Mouth is a term used to describe the tooth decay that results from putting a baby to bed with a bottle that contains anything except water. When baby teeth have frequent and prolonged contact with too much sugar from milk or juice in a bottle.Children at risk for bottle mouth take bottles of milk or juice to bed at naptime and bedtime or carry sugary beverages or milk around during the day. It is usually worse when a baby or young children fall asleep with a bottle or sippy cup in their mouth.Bottle mouth cavities develop when babies are put to bed with a bottle, when a bottle is used as a pacifier, or if a baby or toddler uses a bottle or sippy cup frequently throughout the day and night. The bacteria already in the babies mouth feed on the sugar, multiply and produce acid as an acid as a waste product. This acid attacks and weakens the outer tooth layer called enamel, once weakened the tooth decay process starts. Why should you be concerned with Baby Bottle Tooth Decay? This is a common question I am asked. They’re just baby teeth, they are going to lose them anyway, so why do I need to worry about them? It is true, your child will lose their baby teeth, but infant cavities can be a serious problem. Your child needs their teeth to chew, swallow, speak, and smile. Baby teeth also hold the space for permanent teeth. If your child loses a baby tooth too early, the neighboring teeth are more likely to tilt or drift into the empty space and create limited space for the permanent tooth to erupt. If left untreated, the permanent tooth can be blocked from coming in property causing crowding and the need for braces, poor eating habits or speech problems. The first signs of Baby Bottle Tooth Decay are white spots on the front teeth. If the white spots with plaque and sugar on the teeth, will quickly progress into tooth decay. Teeth that have decay may appear brown or black. Bottle mouth decay mostly affects the upper front teeth, but other teeth can develop cavities as well.Milk that lingers on your teeth can cause damage without brushing your teeth after drinking milk (especially at night before bed), the sugar in milk stays stuck on teeth. Not disrupting the plaque is what leads to cavities and decay. It's also good to rinse your mouth with water after having milk during the day to neutralize the pH in the mouth.Babies who fall asleep while drinking from a bottle can breath liquid into their lungs and choke, it can also cause aspiration pneumonia. This is why you do not want to put a baby to be with a bottle to soothe them. You can feed them before bed, just don’t give them a bottle and leave them for the night, it becomes a hard habit to break later. For more informations and products I recommend go to www.dentalhygiene411.com

EP 53 - Lip Ties With Melissa Tyson

EP 53 - Lip Ties With Melissa Tyson

What is lip-tie? To put it simply it is a condition that restricts the upper lip.You are born with it. You either have it or you don't. A lip tie is when the band of tissue under the baby's upper lip is too short or tight and is tethered, limiting the upper lips movement. That band of tissue is called the maxillary labial frenum (you can feel yours if you run your tongue between your upper lip and your front teeth right under your nose and the top of the gum). If the tissue is too tight it can interfere with breastfeeding. Babies who are having difficulty latching should be evaluated for lip and tongue tie.Similar to lip-ties tongue-tie can cause feeding difficulties as well if a baby can’t get his/her lips around the nipple and areola. (The baby’s Lips should be able to form a proper seal around them.) Today I interview Melissa Tyson an amazing Swim coach and Mom of a daughter who had a lip tie that made nursing painful. She is sharing her story and experience with us to help other know they are not alone and what signs to look for where to get help if your baby is not latching or nursing is painful. If you think you baby may have a tie or you are having pain while nursing or know someone who is speak to your lactation consultant or reach out to meResources and Linkshttps://brushingwithbristles.com/boxI am a BURST ambassadorwww.burstoralcare.com Promo code 5ZMZBRwww.dentalhygiene411.comSchedule a free 15 minute consultationhttps://thehealthymouthmovment.as.me/ https://sheree.mynuskin.comMy BlogMy YouTube Channel

EP 51 : Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

EP 51 : Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

Here are a few things you should know about hand foot and mouth disease and the recommended treatments. The coxsackievirus is the known cause for this common childhood ailment. While hand, foot and mouth disease is more common in children, adults can become infected too. Sometimes they have no symptoms at all, but they and you can still spread the infection to others. How does it spread? Hand, foot, and mouth disease is passed through bodily fluids—which explains why it travels like wildfire in places that young kids hang out like daycares and school. The virus is easily spread to hard surfaces like shopping carts, toys and tables. A person can pass the virus through fluid from the blisters of their rash, mucus in their nose, saliva, and even contact with their poop. It’s important for parents to teach children to wash and dry their hands often and properly to help prevent infections. Effective hand washing means wetting hands with water, applying soap, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. That is like singing happy birthday. To minimize the risk of getting it and passing it, say no thank you to hugging, kissing, or sharing utensils, cups, toys and other items with people who are sick. Make sure they and you are washing your hands frequently. www.dentalhygiene411.com

EP 50 : The 1 Habit

EP 50 : The 1 Habit

I am so excited, Today is my 50th Episode and we are going to talk about habits. A habit is a routine or behavior, an automatic response to a specific situation, in many cases it is subconscious. We are not even aware you are doing it most of the time that is how automatic habits become. We all face challenges in life, it is your mindset and the way we respond we most likely learned as a child from our parents. The process of habit formation starts with trial and error. In any situation in life your brain has to make a decision. Habits are simply reliable solutions to recurring problems in your life. When similar situations arise your brain just reacts without thinking. A habit is a behavior that has been repeated enough times it becomes so automatic you don’t even think about it you just do it. We all have both good and bad habits. Take brushing your teeth in the morning. That is a good habit. Unconscious habits are breathing, going to the bathroom, checking your phone. Your particular habit will depend on your situation, beliefs and goals. All habits serve you in some way, good or bad. The one habit book series will open your mind and your heart in ways you might have never imagined to create ideas that catapult your life on a path you are destined for. The best part is it happens one habit at a time. Get your copy at 1habit.com My link is in the episode notes. You are one habit away. Change your habits, change your life, try something different, what have you got to lose except a bad habit or two! https://www.1habit.com/author/shereewertz/ https://amzn.to/2Y8mx21
