Kyla Richey is a mentor and role model for young Canadian athletes. Being able to share her journey has been something she doesn’t take lightly. But she also wants young women to realize that life is not always what it appears to be. Although it may seem as though she has a picture perfect reality, she has experienced deep loss and great pain with the loss of her brother and subsequent battle with anxiety and depression. This conversation explores our need to share our lives vulnerably and the quest to end the stigma that we need to have our lives together to happy and successful.  Kyla Richey is currently captain of team Canada women's volleyball. She has played for over ten years with the senior national team and has so far played seven years of professional volleyball around the world (Germany, Turkey, Italy, Greece, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, and Peru). She played for the powerhouse UBC Thunderbirds where she won five back to back national titles. Despite a very successful sporting career, Kyla has had her fair share of ups and downs. The summer before her senior year of high school, her two best friends were killed in a car crash while she was away competing with the Junior National Team. More recently, her younger brother died six years ago and since then, has been struggling with the realities of balancing this life with her grief. An advocate for younger athletes, she wants to bring attention to the daily struggles that we all try to burry. Whether that is dealing with confidence, learning how to step into your true self, balancing athletics and grief, or battles with mental health, Kyla wants to bring it all to the surface. Talking through these issues and being as real as she can be on social media and on her website (re her blog), Kyla hopes that she can foster community and relationship between individuals who might relate. It's no secret that your mindset can radically shift the course of your life. For many years I had bought into the lie that I would never be enough for others, that I would always be in lack and that I better get used to standing at the end of the line.  It took me being wracked with physical and emotional pain to understand that I needed to break the lie that I would always live in uncertainty and fear. Today I'm chatting with longtime friend Hannah Marks.  Life is not always as we think it will be. It’s definitely not perfect even if others perceive it to be. Her second born was only a few weeks old when she passed out after feeding. Her skin was ashy and grey and Hannah knew that something was just not right with her baby girl London Elizabeth. The news she got from the doctor was scary and unbelievable. If London didn’t have heart surgery immediately she would not last through the night. Within moments everything changed for Hannah and her husband Robbie. Hannah Marks is an independent sales director with a skin care and cosmetics direct sales company, leading women for 15 years. She has been married to Robbie for 16 years and they have two beautiful children, Will 9 and London Elizabeth 4. Originally from Great Britain, Hannah recently became an American Citizen but still enjoys all things British! Have you ever felt the sting of rejection? Rejection is not limited to our childhood. It is something that many of us face as adults. You may have memories that trace all the way back to childhood, but you may also be feeling rejection from a past relationship or the loss of something important in your life. Rejection knows know ethnicity, class, gender, or status. Love it or hate it, the body you have is the only one you will ever have. And yet we treat our body with such disrespect. Our bodies are what house our mind (thoughts, will, and emotions) and our spirit. For many years I was unaware of my body. But the moment I realized that I was different than other kids I started to resent the body I was in. It's taken a lot of years for me to even think about loving my body. One of the deepest struggles we face as women is coming to terms with our true self. From a very young age, we can be bombarded with images and societal pressure to be something that we are not. And in order to fit in, we can fall into the trap of taking on a false version of who truly are. When you add that to childhood trauma, it can be a difficult web to untangle.    My friend Amanda sat down with me and graciously agreed to let me coach her for the podcast. Now, this is not the first session we have had together, but it was the first time she knew that others would be listening in to our conversation. I have to applaud her courage to step out and to be seen when one of the biggest struggles she has had in her life is being known and seen by those she loves most.    In this very first recorded coaching conversation, Amanda opens up about the pain she has experienced trying to prove not only to herself but to others that she is enough.
