Focus on the WHY: Why is it so important to us? Dr. Sabrina discusses the Survival Trap Image from the workbook, and how we can align our actions on an ongoing basis to be a direct path towards achieving our vision. Refer to the Wheel of Life in your workbook and think through how you’re experiencing each area of your life. Dr. Sabrina helps you identify and asks powerful questions around the sweet spot in your business. Remember to use active language and speak in present tense as if it’s currently happening. Today we’re joined by John Briggs of Incite Tax. John is featured as a case study in Dr. Sabrina’s latest book, How to Hire the Best: The Entrepreneur's Ultimate Guide to Attracting Top-Performing Team Members. Currently, John has 26 team members and his business is growing. Needless to say, hiring is a top focus at Incite Tax. John does a lot to make his business a great place to work and to develop his team. On today’s episode, John shares some of his insights around the importance of one-to-one meetings with team members, why he spends so much time getting to know his team members, as well as why he encourages his leaders to do the same. Listen in for some informative ideas that you can easily implement in your own business! Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: John explains the team member structure within his business and how everyone reports to somebody once a week for a one-to-one conversation. John and his leadership team also meet once a week. John shares his philosophy on why he makes the investment in one-to-ones. Asking team members what support they need is woven into Tap the Potential’s Coach Approach. Whenever we’re making an assumption, as leaders we need to ask an open-ended question of the team member and find out what’s really going on. It’s important to understand that team members perform better when they’re heard. John describes creative ways that he likes to make a positive impact in his team members’ lives. Dr. Sabrina cautions against tying a money bonus with performance and being mindful of the psychology of A-players. Using marketing to attract A-players is an A-player move. John addresses the impact that low turnover and high retention have on profit. Tap the Potential’s Leadership Bootcamp is for the A-players in their clients’ businesses, who have been identified with leadership potential. 118: Building the Team Who Supports You with Donna Leyens
Dr. Sabrina’s latest book in her How to Hire the Best series, How to Hire the Best: The Entrepreneur's Ultimate Guide to Attracting Top-Performing Team Members, is all about creating a business that gives the business owner more time for what matters and more money in their bank account than they’ve ever had! One of the most important things you can do to that end is knowing how to attract and retain those A-players that will help you reach your goals. One of Profit By Design’s favorite guests joins Dr. Sabrina in today's conversation. Donna Leyens shares with us her journey from being a solopreneur to running a business that is beginning to be able to run without her direct involvement. For those listeners who are still in the initial hires process and who hear they can run a business without their own direct involvement, it may be very hard to imagine that this can happen for you. When you hear Donna’s story today, you will be able to see what is possible for yourself, so don’t miss this encouraging exchange! Donna is the President and co-founder of Pumpkin Plan Your Biz. She is on a mission to save small businesses from extinction by providing business tools, strategy, training, and support to business professionals who want to make a big impact as small business growth strategists. Most business coaches and consultants find themselves reinventing the wheel with each client, producing inconsistent results for their clients, and mental burnout for the coach. That’s why Donna, who experienced these issues herself in her early years as a business coach, partnered with Mike Michalowicz in 2012 to create a repeatable business growth program based on the strategies in Mike’s book, The Pumpkin Plan. Today, she spearheads the training, certification, and continued development of their proven business growth program, so that their certified Pumpkin Plan Strategists can easily and consistently deliver high value to more clients. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: The purpose of an accountability document is to ask yourself what you accomplished in the past week that has moved the business forward towards being a business that can run without you. A yearly accountability document can remind you of all you have accomplished in your business throughout the year. Dr. Sabrina and Donna discuss creative solutions to grow teams that don’t require full-time team members. Donna shares how she has seen her business grow over the last year. Donna addresses how to know when you’re ready to start hiring. Having a good team and systems in place were critical to Donna’s business when her family experienced a recent crisis. The 4 Week Vacation™ is so much more than a four-week vacation. Having a team that is focused on the same thing you are, which is making your business as good as it can be for your clients, is an amazing experience. Tap the Potential teaches the A-player team members of its clients’ businesses “How do I add value?” in Leadership Bootcamp. Nothing brings him greater joy than seeing his people overcome the unique challenges of a business where hourly employees work together on small four-person teams working independently spread throughout the city. In 2016, John retired from day-to-day operations at The Maids to focus on using his experience to support the entrepreneurial community both in Kansas City and internationally. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: John addresses how he solved his dilemma of how to attract A-players. John is passionate about providing opportunities in life to those who may not otherwise have these opportunities. What John loves seeing is someone who joins the team, learns how to be a team member, and then goes on to become an assistant team leader or team leader with responsibilities. Once they step into a leadership role, it’s amazing to see their demeanor change. How Leadership Bootcamp and Coach Approach impacted John’s team and company culture. John explains the concept of “The Flywheel Effect”. John utilizes networking strategies in the communities from which he hires. 115: Building the Work Culture That Inspires A-Player Loyalty with Steve Bousquet
Dr. Sabrina invited Steve Bousquet back to the show to hear more about how he has grown his team from twelve team members to twenty-seven team members over the last few years using strategies that are taught in Dr. Sabrina’s How to Hire the Best book series. Today, Steve shares his entrepreneurial story, his highs and lows when it comes to building a team, and how he has had to grow personally in order to grow his team. If you’re needing some ideas on how to attract and retain the A-players to your business that will help give you your life back, you’ll want to listen in to this inspiring and insightful conversation! Steve’s story is included in Dr. Sabrina’s newest book, How to Hire the Best: The Entrepreneur's Ultimate Guide to Attracting Top-Performing Team Members, which just published November 18th, 2020! Don’t miss it! Steve Bousquet, a blue-collar executive, founded S&B Lawn and Garden Care in 1983 while in high school. Graduating from college with a BA in Economics, Steven continued operating his landscape company with the new name American Landscape Service. Steven added Lawn Science to the company in 1991 to form American Landscape and Lawn Science LLC. In recent years, Steve has grown his team from 12 team members to 27 team members, using the How to Hire the Best™ System. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Steve summarizes his backstory around being deeply in debt and his need to understand his numbers. Without profit, there is no business. Having consistency and profitability in your business is necessary in attracting A-players to your team. Steve shares why he thinks his team members are so loyal. Tap the Potential’s Breakthroughs on the Bayou Retreat inspired an epiphany in Steve that ultimately allowed him to grow his team from 12 team members to 27 team members over a four-year period. Dr. Sabrina explains the costs of high turnover rates. When you don’t have turnover, that money becomes profit! The benefits that Steve has seen since implementing one-on-ones with his employees have been numerous. Steve had to work on his own personal development in order to be the leader he needed to be for his team when he was able to turn his business finances around. If you’re not willing to work on yourself, you won’t be able to keep the A-players that you attract to your team. Be intentional about creating the culture that you want for your business. 114: Being the Leader You Need to Be
When you think about hiring someone to work for you, do you consider them employees or team members? In this Chapter Five sneak preview of How to Hire the Best: The Entrepreneur’s Ultimate Guide to Attracting Top-Performing Team Members, Dr. Sabrina’s latest book in her How to Hire the Best series, learn how a simple mindset shift can make a huge difference in how you make your hiring decisions and how those decisions bring value to your business plans. Dr. Sabrina also shares tips on leading with confidence and polishing your delegating skills. Stacey Seguin, a valued team member of Tap the Potential, interviews Dr. Sabrina in this peek inside the book that addresses one of the biggest hurdles that entrepreneurs face—finding the right team to support and further their business vision. Don’t miss this conversation around the Tap the Potential Solution™ to creating a business that gives the business owner more time for what matters and more money in their bank account than they’ve ever had! As a Tap the Potential strategist, Stacey specializes in Profit First and Pumpkin Planning and supports Tap the Potential by providing clients with guidance towards advancing their company goals and assisting them in problem-solving any business challenges they may encounter along the way. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Dr. Sabrina shares one of her wins for the week, which is developing a quiz that helps entrepreneurs determine if they’re ready to hire. The power of “yet”: Shift your “I can’t” into an “I’m not able to do this YET”. Dr. Sabrina explains the difference between employees and team members. It’s necessary to get the self-doubt gremlins out of our heads so that we can operate from a place of confidence and trust. Having diversity on a team—not only in terms of ethnicity, but also in terms of personalities, strengths, perspectives, and backgrounds—means making better decisions as a team because we’re tapping into that diversity. It’s better to hire people who have A-player qualities that fit with your immutable laws than it is to hire people for their skill set. Skill sets can be trained, developed, and nurtured, but you cannot turn somebody into an A-player with training. Dr. Sabrina addresses how to distinguish between the performance of an A-player and someone who is not an A-player. When errors are made by an A-player, it is often due to a gap in our systems somewhere. Use errors as opportunities to strengthen those systems. If something in a team member hits a nerve in us, we need to ask ourselves how it might be related to our own behaviors and choices in our business and how we handle things. We need to be aware of how we are living our life as a leader because that will translate into how the business is run. When we have lives away from our business, we are better at how we show up at work. Links and Resources: Are You Ready to Hire? Take the quiz and find out! Show Highlights: One of Dr. Sabrina’s wins and successes for the week was recording the launch video for her newest book with zero stress. If you want to stay on top of the release information or want to be an Ambassador for the book, please visit www.howtohirethebest.com. Capacity is a stress point for business owners. Dr. Sabrina explains the difference between time capacity for the entrepreneur and business capacity for serving clients. Dr. Sabrina shares how she lost some clients when she first started adding to her team and how that turned out to be a GOOD thing. Make sure that as we’re bringing in A-players to our team that we’re inviting them to work with our best clients and customers, and that we have that sweet spot clearly defined. Inflection point is that moment of total recognition that how we’re doing things now no longer serves us and is not sustainable to our growth. Getting to the palace of comfort in our business opens up more capacity to do more new things. As entrepreneurs, we tend to be impatient. We want things done, and we want them done now. We get frustrated when things don’t happen on our timeline. We can ask ourselves what is the real harm in pushing goals out? It is not procrastination; it is making a thoughtful choice toward making a bigger impact. What opportunities are created if we give ourselves more time? Having a full pipeline of people who want to come work for you gives you the advantage of more easily bringing in more A-players when you’re ready to take on more clients that are within your sweet spot. Tap the Potential’s Better Business, Better Life™ program has identified steps to take so that you can free up more of your time and get to that point where you have the time to analyze the top clients and do your wish-list interviews. 112: Transitioning to a Sustainable Business with Don Zerby
Dr. Sabrina’s guest today is Don Zerby, who owns Ecolawn. Don has been following the How to Hire the Best, Profit First, and The Pumpkin Plan systems for at least four years now and today he is sharing his story of his first hire after reading How to Hire the Best, as well as how he has integrated what he has been learning from the Better Business, Better Life™ program at Tap the Potential. Fully implementing Tap the Potential’s solution has allowed Don to create a business that is giving him his life back. Listen in to this inspiring conversation as Don shares his poignant story about why that is so important to him, and be prepared for a few ‘a-ha!’ moments that will be immediately implementable for you. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Don provides an overview of his lawn care business and the organic nutrient program that he developed. Learning that a deep root system was the foundation for a healthy lawn, Don went on a mission to identify clients whose objectives resonate with his own, as there are components to a healthy lawn for which the homeowner is responsible. After reading the first book in the How to Hire the Best series four years ago, Don made his first hire. This past summer, he received a surprising testimonial from a customer that gave him confirmation that he had hired his first-ever A-player. Don asked his office manager to read The Pumpkin Plan, Profit First, and How to Hire the Best because he planned to implement and execute these systems. Positive feedback from clients he hasn’t even met is now a regular occurrence in Don’s business. Don relates a catastrophic event that occurred three years ago that put him out of work for a month, and how his business operated well in his absence. 111: Culture: The Untapped Potential
If you’re interested in learning how work culture can improve profitability by 756% over a ten to eleven-year period, don’t miss this exciting discourse of the first chapter of How to Hire the Best: The Entrepreneur’s Ultimate Guide to Attracting Top-Performing Team Members, Dr. Sabrina’s latest book in her How to Hire the Best series. Stacey Seguin, a valued team member of Tap the Potential, interviews Dr. Sabrina in this peek inside the book that addresses one of the biggest hurdles that entrepreneurs face, and that’s finding the right team to support and further their business vision. Don’t miss this conversation around the Tap the Potential solution to creating a business that gives the business owner more time for what matters and more money in their bank account than they’ve ever had! Sabrina discusses how she’s mindful of the work culture at Tap the Potential and shares her favorite things about team meetings. When there’s a high turnover rate in the business, it is a huge time and energy drain and causes us to lose money when we’re constantly having to hire and train. Warm bodies on the team that are tolerated are another cause of time and energy drain. When you have A-players on your team and teach them how to utilize and work from their strengths, the whole team becomes highly focused on keeping people in their strengths and reduces drag by shifting responsibilities around if somebody is operating outside their strengths. Parkinson’s Law and the Pareto principle: If you aren’t familiar with how these relate to being more effective in our businesses, Dr. Sabrina and Stacey give some insight! You need to understand the psychology of A-players in order to attract them to your team. Part of this involves making a culture that celebrates and supports the A-player mentality. Be cautious that your policies and procedures do not deter and repel your A-players and best clients. As business owners, it’s very important for us to have outside feedback when building our strong teams. Clients in the Better Business, Better Life™ get that perspective and objective feedback from the other program members who are outside the business. We need thinking time and time to reflect on powerful questions. Creating a culture of safety, security, and trust allows team members to feel comfortable with sharing their ideas. Dr. Sabrina covers the steps of transitioning from a present culture to a chosen culture. Dr. Sabrina defines the characteristics of an A-player. If it’s not good for the client, if it’s not good for the team member, it’s not going to be in the best interest of the company. The company exists to take care of the team members, the business owner, and the clients. Joining Dr. Sabrina and her co-host, Mike Bruno, today is Tina Smith, of Connect to Creative. Tina is a client in the Better Business, Better Life™ program at Tap the Potential, and she is also a Breakthroughs on the Bayou Retreat alumna who has taken the 4 Week Vacation™ pledge. Tina has taken her business from debt to profitability and she will be sharing the unique roles that marketing and website presence play as you map your own road to success. If you're looking for a breath of fresh air, stay tuned! This might just be what you're needing to hear! You know how companies need someone who can see something successful in one department and cross apply it to other teams? Or someone who can see frameworks and tools that are accelerating growth in other industries and can successfully implement them in a completely different industry? The problem is, most of the time, even when companies find someone who sees what can be done, the person lacks the confidence, enthusiasm, and grit it takes to communicate the ideas and successfully accomplish the goals. Well, that's what Tina has been doing her entire career. Creatively mimicking success strategies from other businesses. As a result, she has spent 13 years at a mid-sized company in the car industry in Atlanta, taking on increasing levels of responsibility and leading multiple teams. At the end of her corporate career, Tina had acquired an MBA from Emory University and was the EVP of Strategy, Marketing, Communications, and Human Resources. After receiving a nomination in New York for Best Social Media movement, competing with the Ice Bucket ALS Challenge (which swept the awards shows like the Titanic swept the Oscars), Tina decided to launch her own marketing and website business. Her company builds websites that get results because the Good Guys deserve to win. Her team at Connect to Creative works almost exclusively with health, wellness, and development companies who focus on personal growth for individuals. This is their 5th year in business, and they've grown revenue by over 20% every year. Diane details five ways that job costing dramatically increases your profitability: Locate costs that you haven’t billed out. Spot and eliminate your low-profit and loser jobs. Change your business niche. Review estimate versus actual reports. Use a 3-step combination method to increase your prices: Decrease your costs of goods sold or production costs by 5%. Increase your prices by 5%. This increases your gross profit margin of 10%. Gradually increase volume. Once business owners start seeing numbers that make sense and are set up in a logical format, it can change their lives. Investing 20-40 hours is all it takes to learn the job costing system. This could mean an extra $100,000 a year. If you’re in an industry where job costing is not part of the conversation, Dr. Sabrina encourages you to be curious about what it might look like in your business, how it would empower you to have that information at your fingertips, and what different decisions would you be able to make with that information. Diane covers the hidden costs of hiring people for your team and how that eats away at the gross profit margin. Dr. Sabrina shares the 80/20 principle, which is where 20 percent of clients are responsible for 80 percent of your revenue. Clients with the Tap the Potential and Better Business, Better Life™ programs learn this principle and how to zero in on the best clients to work with. In this way, you do not need as many team members, and those team members you do have tend to be A-players, who are able to focus on how best to serve your clients. Don’t count on somebody else to learn this job costing process for you. The business owner should be responsible for learning the process and then can later decide if this should be assigned to another team member. 98: Understanding Pricing and Value with Stephen King
On today’s episode, Stephen King, president and CEO of GrowthForce, joins Dr. Sabrina and her co-host, Mike Bruno, for an illuminating conversation around pricing. Should you discount during this economic downturn? Listen in to this discussion to hear compelling reasons why you should NOT discount, and what you should be doing, instead. Top executive at a Fortune 500 company. Bootstrapped CEO. Venture-backed tech startup founder. Non-profit fundraiser. It’s safe to say Stephen King is not your traditional CPA. Stephen is president and CEO of GrowthForce, one of the nation’s largest providers of outsourced bookkeeping and controller services. Regarded as an industry thought leader by AICPA and CPA.com, his ability to visualize the future of accounting has lead GrowthForce to become one of the fastest-growing companies in America. His experience at the forefront of technology development and accounting system design spans nearly three decades. In 1995 he founded Virtual Growth, the nation’s first cloud-based accounting service, and quickly grew it into a market leader. After being acquired by Insperity, Stephen was brought on as president of Insperity’s Financial Management Services division, serving two years before leaving to build GrowthForce. He also spent seven years working at Amnesty International USA—first overseeing 300 percent growth as CFO, then raising over $20M a year as Director of Development. Stephen’s time at Amnesty reinforced his life-long commitment to giving back to the community. As a result, non-profits represent 35 percent of GrowthForce clients. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Business owners are feeling a lot of pressure in this new normal. Pricing is harder if you’re not confident of the value that you’re bringing. Stephen addresses the issues around discounting, then provides the math: If you have a 40 percent gross profit and you give a 10 percent discount, you need 33 percent more sales to generate the same bottom line. If you have a 30 percent margin, you need 50% more sales to generate the same bottom line. If you have a 40 percent gross profit and you ADD 10% to your pricing, you can sell 20 percent less and make the same money. When Stephen let an objective person price his jobs, his fees started going up. Stephen shares some case studies and classic mistakes from clients that allow him to share their data. The accounting industry was designed for compliance. Financial accounting is designed for external users. For example, it is your CPA’s job to help you pay as little in taxes as you’re legally allowed to, to get you through an audit, and to keep the banks happy. Management accounting is about internal users and about understanding your unit economics, the profitability on each job. Stephen explains the benefits of automated activity-based costing and cautions against time-leakage. Things to consider to gain confidence in pricing appropriately: Stephen offers accounting system suggestions to set up reports to show you your “income minus your cost of goods sold equals your gross profit”. Your gross profit percentage is the most important number of every financial statement. This will tell you if you’re pricing right. Which clients should you fire? Which clients should you re-price? How do you spend money to make money in sales and marketing? Dr. Sabrina explains the 80/20 principle: 20 percent of your clients and customers are responsible for 80 percent of your revenue. If you focus on increasing revenue from the top 20 percent by 25 percent, you’re at choice and you can get rid of 80 percent of your clients and customers. One...

Two of their main issues included a need to reduce work hours and to find clients that were a better fit. The right clients are out there looking for you, and when they find you, it will give you the confidence to realize you don’t have to take all the jobs/opportunities that present themselves. 94: Stealth Health: Take Back Your Power and Unravel the Mystery of You with Dr. Nancy Trimboli
In Episode 7 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, sits down for a conversation with Dr. Nancy Trimboli, a significant person in the Tap the Potential community who has long advocated for entrepreneurial health. It’s imperative that we take care of ourselves during this coronavirus event in order to stay mentally and physically healthy during isolation. This better enables us to make the good decisions now that will help drive our business and move us toward our vision going forward. You’ll also hear tips on how to ease yourself and your team members back into a routine as more and more businesses are starting to open. Dr. Nancy Trimboli drew upon the lessons learned from her Episcopalian priest father and her training to become a black belt in Tae Kwon Do to build her bustling Chiropractic practice. Over the last 25 years, she grew her practice to be a multi-location, multi-doctor, multimillion-dollar business with nearly 40 employees. Recently, she has reduced her office locations and staffing to commit time to create online course work and to write her first adult book. She has a large local patient following, and an ever-expanding online audience who are eager to see what she has in store with new online content due to come out this year. Her most recent book, Stealth Health: Take Back Your Power and Unravel the Mystery of You, takes a fresh look at understanding your own health challenges by asking better questions and recruiting your own health arsenal of trusted sources. Little Squirrel Girl, her first children’s book is a true story about a baby squirrel Dr. Nancy adjusted back to health. Dr. Nancy’s gift is to take complex health topics and reduce them to usable, actionable bites. Making simple life changes will have a profound effect on your strength and resilience, your craft and creativity, your relationships, your work, and your future. Observing social isolation herself, Dr. Nancy created the Stealth Health Isolation Survival Pack: a twelve unit mini-course of practical changes to make now while we have this gift of time in isolation. These small incremental changes added one at a time, will allow her audience to reflect back to this time as one of personal transition and growth. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: While in isolation, Dr. Nancy developed a FREE course for simple, 5-minute fixes to change old habits so people can look back on this time as a time they emerged from their depression, where they started to lose weight, or where their relationships deepened. We’re meant to be social, and social isolation with entrepreneurial burnout is especially not healthy. The lungs are one of the few autonomic organs that we can consciously control, and when we take control of our breathing, we can take ourselves out of an anxious state. If we stay in a state of fight-or-flight anxiety, it can lead to memory loss, dementia, inability to properly digest your food, heart disease, and many other maladies. D. Sabrina’s Veggies First (#veggiesfirst) philosophy and Profit First have a few things in common! In Dr. Nancy’s Stealth Health Isolation Survival Pack, she has a unit called “Add a Big Bowl”. Enjoy a large green salad each day for a nutritional punch. Add some beautiful fruits to your day. Dr. Nancy explains how being mindful when we chew can have a positive impact on our digestion. We must take responsibility for our own health and our own health choices. Ways that we can do

93: Be Fulfilled with Tony Grebmeier
In Episode 4 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, chats with Tony Grebmeier, Founder of the Be Fulfilled community. Tony shares ways to move us toward our dreams, despite all of the different hardships that we’re experiencing in our personal lives and in our businesses during this coronavirus event. Together, Dr. Sabrina and Tony explore how to determine our need for self-care, ways we can serve others, and new ideas for gratitude. Tony is a husband, father, friend, and serial entrepreneur. His current ventures include ShipOffers, a five year Inc 5000 fastest growing company. His mission to bring fulfillment to the world extends from traditional fulfillment services to personal fulfillment. He's also on a quest to redefine how we all view and define success. Listen in on the BeFulfilled Podcast, which features entrepreneurs coming together to redefine success. It's the perfect show for entrepreneurs who know they can achieve their dreams despite their hardships. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Tony shares why connection and building community are so important to him. Ask yourself, “How can I serve?”, then get out a piece of paper and write down all the things that make you feel good when people do things for you, and start from there. You can serve in both small ways and in large ways. Offer grace to yourself and to others during this time. As Dr. Sabrina explains that many entrepreneurs were already experiencing burnout when the coronavirus event started. This burnout is a setup for depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Being more cynical about the world and isolating are some of the burnout red flags. Remember that you are not alone in your struggle, and ask for help if you need it. Tony details an aspect of his teaching called, “Fantasy / Possibility / Reality”. Be coachable and willing to unlock the greatness that makes you, ‘you’, and remember that one day you will need to reach out and help pull somebody else up. Lose the ‘I have to do this’ mindset in favor of the ‘I get to do this’ mindset. If you keep planting seeds daily, for yourself and for others, you’re going to have a bountiful harvest and a beautiful garden to walk through. You may not see it today but trust the process. Dr. Sabrina is always amazed at what has grown over the course of the year when Tap the Potential does the milestones celebrations with her clients. The BeFulfilled journal provides structure and support for entrepreneurs in making daily choices that move them towards their vision. No matter where you’re at, there are people willing to help you get to places you’ve never gone. Be willing to practice making mistakes. 92: Fix This Next with Mike Michalowicz
One of our favorite guests, Mike Michalowicz, joins Dr. Sabrina in today’s episode to talk about his latest book Fix This Next. Mike was the very first guest on the Profit By Design Podcast, and today marks his third occasion of being on the show. Listen in to find out what inspired Mike to write his latest book, learn about the Business Hierarchy of Needs as a basis of applying our business fixes, and why we need to be asking our clients what they need from us. Mike Michalowicz (pronounced mi-‘kal-o-wits) is the author of Profit First, Clockwork, Surge, The Pumpkin Plan, and his newest release Fix This Next. By his 35th birthday, Mike had founded and sold two companies - one to private equity and another to a Fortune 500. Today he is running his third multi-million dollar venture, Profit First Professionals. Mike is a former small business columnist for The Wall Street Journal and the former business makeover specialist on MSNBC. Over the years, Mike has traveled the globe speaking with thousands of entrepreneurs and is here today to share the best of what he has learned. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: The biggest challenge business owners have is knowing what their biggest challenge is. The Business Hierarchy of Needs is based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and Mike explains how the five levels of need apply in business: Sales Profit Order Impact Legacy Where you need to apply your fix is always in this hierarchy. Start at the foundation, work your way up, and pinpoint where you’re compromised, where that thing is not adequately satisfied, then fix that and go through the cycle again to find the next fix. Many small businesses try to skip levels. Being profitable is the only way you can be of service to your clients. Dr. Sabrina shares a quote from Mike in his interview in Episode 1 that made a significant impression on her: “Our clients and customers crave for us to be profitable.” Fear and lack of confidence have affected a lot of business owners, especially since the beginning of the coronavirus event. Mike has online training, The Confidence Course, that will help develop what you already have. We should be asking our customers what they need now. Valuable elements from Mike’s prior books, Profit First and Pumpkin Plan are discussed. Understanding the needs of our top 20% clients that are responsible for 80% of our revenue historically in the business is a powerful way to move forward. If we increase revenue from our top 20% by 25% we can replace the revenue from the 80% that we may have lost or we just might not want to do business with because they were not our ideal clients. “Sell the Tell”: The new process to cater to that top 20%. Go to your existing client base and ask what they want, and bring imagination to it. Mike details this project. Fix This Next pulls together Mike’s work. It helps us to understand where we need to focus. His previous books support different levels of the business hierarchy needs. Tap The Potential has 50 copies of Fix This Next to give out! 91: When Adversity Meets Resiliency with Kieran Lynch
On today’s episode, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, welcomes her guest, Kieran Lynch, back to the podcast. About a year ago in Episode 33, they discussed the power of culture and how that was helping him recruit as an electrical contractor in an industry where he was facing a lot of challenges around recruiting. How different his circumstances are now! Kieran and his business faced an especially difficult challenge that he came through only to be impacted immediately after by the coronavirus. Kieran's strategic thinking and his resiliency are powerfully evident in this encouraging and inspiring conversation that you don’t want to miss. Kieran has over 15 years of experience in the electrical industry and joined the Lynch Power family business part-time in 2004. First helping his father as an apprentice electrician on nights and weekends to becoming an integral part of the company’s growth and success as Principal of the company. Along the way, Kieran has held positions of electrical journeyman, foreman, and project manager. Kieran leads the finance, marketing & strategic planning departments of Lynch Power providing new-age guidance on significant decisions for the company. His broad experience, proven leadership, and hands-on approach ensures client satisfaction. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: As Kieran relates, his business experienced their best year ever, then overnight it became their worst year ever because his largest client, with whom he was doing 80% of his business, went bankrupt. Although there were rumors of trouble, he was being assured that everything was fine. Looking back, these are the five steps he wish he had taken: Relax. Analyze and ask around. Create multiple plans. Forget the past. Learn from it and move forward. Understand and recognize that this made you stronger. It’s really a blessing in disguise. Dr. Sabrina shares the 80/20 principle, which is where 20% of clients are responsible for 80% of your revenue. Kieran replays the date he broke the bad news to his employees and their reactions. Kieran describes the strategies he implemented at this time to pull his team together. He took ownership that it was partially his fault for not seeing it sooner. His business had just recovered from the financial hardship when the coronavirus hit. He did have to make employee cuts but assured them that his intention was to eventually bring them back in. Kieran predicts that in 12 months, his business will be stronger than it has ever been. He shares some of his ideas on leveraging existing clients and partners. Looking at his financials, he found a lot of “fluff” that he could cut. Keep in mind that now is a great time to be on the lookout for A-players for when you’re able to start hiring again. Steve and his team have been at the forefront of dealing with COVID-19 and supporting other entrepreneurs as they deal with the pandemic’s effect on the business. Listen in as Steve shares what he learned and has put into place prior to the COVID-19 event that has helped him and his team to be stable and sustainable throughout this uncertain time, applying Pumpkin Plan principles throughout the process. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. 89: Pumpkin Plan Your Biz: A New and Stronger Normal with Donna Leyens
Dr. Sabrina welcomes Donna Leyens to the show to discuss reimagining what’s possible for our businesses as we come through the coronavirus pandemic and transition from surviving to thriving, creating a new and stronger normal. Listen in to this conversation and prepare to be inspired as Dr. Sabrina and Donna take on several powerful questions themselves. Show Highlights: Donna shares a compelling story she heard recently about a restaurant owner who mortgaged her house to buy the business, and due to the current events, she may lose both. Many businesses who were doing relatively well a few months ago now are just hanging in there by a thread. However, business owners who have been doing Profit First in addition to The Pumpkin Plan seem to be the businesses that are doing relatively well and are making it through this coronavirus pandemic. Questions to consider while reimagining: What would your business look like if you were starting your business today? What is the opportunity that you have today? How can you create a business that lights you up again? Business owners have a lot on their minds in addition to making money again. They’re thinking of ways they can help their employees and communities, as well. The Pumpkin Plan is about that intersection of top clients, our strengths, how we’re going to innovate, and then how we’re going to systemize that. Identifying our top clients and talking to them about what they want is one of our best opportunities, as Dr. Sabrina explains. Donna emphasizes the importance of strategy. If you’ve never taken the time to create an underlying, foundational strategy for your business, now is the time to do it. Strategies can be re-evaluated and tweaked as needed. Clarify your vision for how you want to experience life over the next few years. Dr. Sabrina shares additional questions that will help you to clarify your vision. Some of Donna’s clients don’t understand the relationship between life vision and work vision until she poses the following: How does your life intersect with your business? How does your business support your lifestyle and your vision for your lifestyle? Strategy programs are life-changing, not only in your business life but in your personal life, as well. Today’s guest, John Bates, joins her to discuss leadership in a virtual age. We’ve all been thrown into virtual leadership recently due to the COVID-19 event, and this presents its own unique challenges, such as how we are going to connect emotionally with the people whom we are trying to lead. He works with people on a very deep, personal level. The amount of vulnerability, openness, self-reflection, and honesty that a well-done TED-format talk requires is second to none. The insights into leadership, success, and fulfillment in life that John has gained from his years of experience with this allow him to share some of the biggest, most powerful secrets of truly successful leadership that exists. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. 87: Protecting Your Greatest Assets: Your Mindset and Your Business with Sir Steven Wilkinson
In Episode 2 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, addresses being very protective of your headspace. Her guest, Sir Steven Wilkinson, joins her to discuss protecting another very important asset: our businesses. We all have a lot of extra stress in our lives today, and Dr. Sabrina’s intention is to take care of the international entrepreneurial community during this crisis by sharing ideas to help us cope. Self-care for us all is extremely important during this time, so please share this information with your team members, who may also be feeling unsafe during this coronavirus event. Sir Steven Wilkinson is the Founder of Good & Prosper. He was also the VIP Speaker of the Tap the Potential 2020 Breakthroughs on the Bayou retreat. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Look two years into your future and picture what you want your life and your business to look like. Avoid the “Survival Trap ”, which is a short-term decision that gets us through today, next week, or the next two months; but can take us far off course. Are there options that can move you CLOSER to your vision? If we keep in mind how we want to be and how we want our business to come out of this, we will make better short-term decisions that better serve our future goals. Sir Steven weighs in on current events and on how we should be minimizing fallout, as governments are recognizing that small business owners are the true backbone of this entire economy. Dr. Sabrina’s personal philosophy when it comes to government programs is that it’s great if it’s available, but she wants to build her life and business in such a way that she does not need to rely on it. One of the positive things that have come out of this crisis is the return to community, and community is everything in these times. Dr. Sabrina’s tip of the week on self-care is to implement a daily huddle with your team for the sake of morale. This can be via zoom or phone, if necessary. Focus on providing updates, wins and successes, and gratitude. Allow team members to express their fears and encourage team members to respond in a supportive way. Ask your team members what support they need and look for ways that other team members can show up and support and be a gift during that time. A team topic for discussion: What random acts of kindness have you given, experienced, or witnessed lately? Dr. Sabrina shares some more self-care tips: Protect your mindset by being very careful about the information you take in. Sleep is critical in a number of ways. Daily exercise is important. Think strategically and surrounding yourself with like-minded, supportive entrepreneurs. Listen to the Profit By Design Podcast. Episodes are made up of positive conversation and sound strategies to help keep your business sustainable. Assess your entrepreneurial burnout through our free assessment HERE. This will help you look at self-care measures that you need to put in place so that entrepreneurial burnout does not get out of hand. Sir Steven discusses the creation of a FREE eBook titled "Leadership in the Time of COVID-19” that you can download on his Website. There’s a humorous title for it when you download it! He designed the e-book with two action items in mind: The urgent need for restructuring;...

86: Mindset and Mental Health Framework for Entrepreneurs
In Episode 1 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina lays down a framework regarding the importance of our mindset and mental health. She encourages us to acknowledge that the current pandemic has changed life as we know it, and explores ways to help us think more strategically about how this situation can help prepare us and our business for any future adversity. Listen in to hear Dr. Sabrina’s tips and resources that will help you cope so that you can not just survive, but thrive. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: In studying entrepreneurs and assessing their levels of entrepreneurial burnout, Dr. Sabrina is seeing a very strong correlation between burnout and gaps that exist in our business. Many entrepreneurs in the Tap the Potential community have been practicing Profit First, which is a great way to strengthen your business foundation and provide you with cash reserves to help get you through whatever might be happening in your business. Burnout leaves us in a constant state of chronic stress, with stress hormones coursing continuously through our bodies. This kind of stress significantly raises our risk for depression and suicide. Tunnel vision causes us to miss the opportunities around us. Dr. Sabrina explains “survival trap” decisions and how Tap the Potential shows you how to avoid these traps by helping you to create a business plan that supports your life vision. Our survival instincts are great at helping us to survive but they’re not great at moving us closer to our vision. Make sure that any decisions that you’re making to get through the immediate situation are in alignment with your life vision. Dr. Sabrina provides her ideas for sharing the protocol plans with her small group clients, those in the Better Business, Better Life™ program, and the retreat alumni. She also has something to offer those who are not current clients of Tap the Potential. What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and its relevance to entrepreneurial burnout? If you haven’t already, get a baseline of your entrepreneurial burnout by taking the FREE assessment here https://www.tapthepotential.com/assessment. Dr. Sabrina shares the “Veggies First” philosophy: It is critical that you take care of yourself first. Here are some tips, which Dr. Sabrina explains in detail: Get adequate sleep Maintain a healthy mindset Practice Mindfulness (Dr. Sabrina enjoys the Calm App!) Exercise Limit your media consumption and make it off-limits in the morning. Your thinking is the average of the five people with whom we spend the most time, so surround yourself with people who think in a healthy, positive way. 85: Seizing Opportunities in Anticipation of an Economic Turn-Around with Erin Longmoon
In light of the Corona Virus event that is currently going on, many companies are finding it necessary to downsize during this economic slump and have unanswered questions about what might be coming next. There is another side to this situation, however: This may actually be the perfect time to recruit and hire your A-players. On today’s show, Sabrina, Mike, and their guest, Erin Longmoon, owner of Zephyr Recruiting, LLC, discuss seizing opportunities in anticipation of an economic turn-around. Listen in to learn how you can use this uncertain time to your advantage! Erin Longmoon’s mission in life is to eradicate toxic workplaces. She believes that everyone deserves to love their job and feel like they are contributing to a greater purpose. As the owner of Zephyr Recruiting LLC, she accomplishes this mission by matching great small businesses with their RIGHT FIT™ employees. Erin has more than two decades of experience helping small businesses and has owned five businesses herself. The passion to eradicating toxic workplaces comes from a place a lot of us can resonate with. When Erin was an employee at a company with a toxic workplace, she saw firsthand how the culture impacted everyone on a deep level. The toxic workplace reduced morale and productivity, followed her home, and led good employees to quit. She dreams of changing people’s lives by helping them realize that they are deeply worthy. She also dreams about being the next Stevie Nicks and being friends with the Dalai Lama. Her magic powers are empathy, ability to read people, coming up with new and awesome ideas, and making a perfectly cooked filet mignon. As the owner of Zephyr Recruiting, she oversees an amazing work-at-home team that shares her passion for supporting great places to work. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: This is an opportunity to rebuild the employee brand of the company. This is also an opportunity to find new A-players that would be an asset to your team. Erin addresses various reasons why the hiring market currently has a healthy supply of A-players. Many of the Tap the Potential clients have been doing Profit First so they are in a very strong cash position. It takes around 40 hours to recruit per role, according to Erin. Some of Zephyr’s clients are hiring people on a contingency basis. They make an offer to the one A-player they don’t want to lose. When you’re hiring, present an offer that is a little higher than the going rate, and then over time show them how you’re going to get them to the 90th percentile for pay over the next year or two, assuming they hit certain benchmarks. Some states are allowing employees to come on board for a limited number of hours per week for on-boarding and training without it affecting their unemployment. Dr. Sabrina shares how her clients in the construction industry say business is booming. Traditionally, certain positions have been very hard to fill but now it is an employee market. Erin explains “Employee Brand Marketing”. Dr. Sabrina explains how this Profit By Design podcast always encourages the building of sustainably profitable businesses and shares hiring tips from her book, How to Hire the Best. Erin and Dr. Sabrina discuss the importance of wording job descriptions. Zephyr differentiates itself from other recruiting companies in a number of ways. There are two places where the interview process can go awry: the interview and failure to check references. Zephyr puts in some extra steps here to avoid the snafus. Download your Employee Brand Marketing Strategy Checklist HERE! Erin will walk you through the checklist on a webinar May 7th, 2020...

84: The Importance of Creating a Sustainable Business
Natural selection: What does this mean for us as entrepreneurs? Many businesses are in a constant state of survival, and that’s never been more apparent than observing the current impact of the coronavirus and its impact on business. Some businesses will not make it through this time; some will come out battered and bruised—but stronger; and some will come out absolutely thriving. On today’s show, Dr. Sabrina and Mike explore the importance of creating a sustainable business from Day One. They discuss what we can do to get our businesses through this time and come out stronger. Listen in for some strategies that can help you weather this (and any) storm. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Mike shares the definition of “natural selection” and applies it to the business world. Dr. Sabrina shares acceptable modes of competition, the danger of competing on price, and the importance of building margins into pricing. Traditional thinking advised setting aside three months of cash reserves, but current thinking is that six months is probably safer. You should be able to answer “YES” to each of these questions: Are you bringing in work from your top clients? Are you doing work that aligns with your strengths? Is it work that can be systematized? Does this work align with your immutable laws? Does it move you closer to your vision? Some businesses are going through a “creative destruction” right now, letting go of team members that are not a good fit, creating a culture that they want to implement going forward, etc. Dr. Sabrina explains the 80/20 principle, which involves focusing on increasing business from our top 20 percent of our clients that are responsible for 80 percent of the revenue in the business, and the financial impact it can have. There are a lot of business owners who incorporate Profit First, who have been in a good cash position coming into this crisis. As business slows down, they may find it tempting to stop Profit First until after the crisis has passed, but now is the time to ramp up your good habit, NOT stop it. Dr. Sabrina addresses business owners who entered this pandemic crisis with debt and have added more debt. Dr. Sabrina and Mike discuss options for struggling business owners. Powerful questions to consider when projecting into the future: What do we think is going to be happening four months from now? Which competitors of mine will be gone four months from now? What opportunities does that create for us as a team? What kind of clients would we want to go after that our competitors served, but we could serve better? What team members would we need to go after that kind of business? After this crisis, people will not want to go back to grinding it out. They will want to be much more intentional about quality time with family and integrating that time with work better. Businesses will also implement virtual work more readily than ever before. Maintain good habits, pay attention to getting clarity around sustainability, and stay focused. Links and Resources: Taking care of yourself is important more now than ever. 81: The Power of Mindset in Managing Fear During Troubled Times
On today’s episode, Dr. Sabrina and Mike are joined by Monica Coleman to talk about the power of our mindset and how we manage our energy, especially during a time of disruption such as we are all currently experiencing with the Coronavirus impacting us. Don’t miss this timely and relevant conversation! Monica Coleman is the founder of Inside Information Coaching and Consulting, LLC, and architect of the Limitless Methodology. As an athlete herself, Monica has always been intrigued by the link between mindset, performance and leading a successful, satisfying life. Her work over the past 15 years with athletes and executives created a birds-eye view of the challenges inherent to high achievers in both their professional and personal lives. Monica's natural curiosity, her ability to inspire others, and her commitment to ensure her clients' move from potential to success has made her a pioneer in the field of performance coaching. As a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) since 2009, Monica meets clients wherever they are on their journey, helping them to create a successful pathway to the lives they have thought were unattainable. Monica crafted the Limitless Methodology to apply the principles in a different setting and with a larger scope, enabling more people to unlock the top performer who resides within them. Her dream is for every individual she meets to better understand their true nature. Bearing witness to other's success and watching their transformation is the greatest expression of her true purpose in life. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: We’re going to have emotions and reactions because we weren’t really prepared for the changes we have recently experienced and we didn’t know that the world was going to change this way. We have a lot of fear and most of our emotions are reactionary. One of the first helpful things we can do is acknowledge that whatever we are feeling is normal. What we tell ourselves about what’s going on has a profound impact on the choices we make and the experience we’re going to have. For entrepreneurs, the skills you exhibit during this time in relation to health are the same skills that will serve you as you move back into your businesses when things begin to normalize. Monica shares how her Limitless Methodology is a great class for anyone because when you change fundamentally on the inside, you change across the board, and she illustrates how this applies to current events. Pay attention to the opportunities in front of us and be grateful for the things that you do have. It’s ok to be vulnerable! If you see something you don’t like, don’t go to war with it. Just change it! Our lives and businesses will be different post-Coronavirus but we get to choose what that is going to look like given the circumstances we can’t control. We are not static; we are dynamic, and we have the ability to move forward. Dr. Sabrina offers tools to use in the face of fear. Take this opportunity to build the systems into our business that we haven’t had time to do before because we were so busy putting out the fires. To quiet the harsh inner critic inside ourselves, ask: Would you talk to your child that way? Be mindful that fear drives the inner critic. Remember that this Coronavirus pandemic is an event. Think of your life 3 years from now and figure out how you want to be experiencing life. We want to be making choices in the now that move us closer to the experience we want to be having in the future. Tap the Potential is offering strategy sessions for entrepreneurs who are struggling with the choices they are currently facing and desire to make strategic decisions that will serve them long-term. Show Highlights: When we get our mindset right, it is a snowball effect because of all the good flows from that. The retreat’s atmosphere is that of a safe, supported place. There are a lot of introverts in the group and there is no pressure to be anything other than who you are. Dr. Sabrina welcomes 25 retreat participants into her home and she wants every single person to feel special and recognized. Participants took the new assessment to assess their level of entrepreneurial burnout in conjunction with the gaps that exist in their business. The longer we let entrepreneurial burnout go, the less effective we become as entrepreneurs. Sleep deprivation is a significant risk factor for entrepreneurs. Dr. Sabrina explains what happens in our bodies when we do not get enough sleep. What Dr. Sabrina saw happening at the retreat were people who decided they were going to create a business that supports their life and determined to take their life back from their business. We are not designed to work 40 hours a week. Current research suggests that working 20-30 hours a week is optimal for productivity. Do you recognize yourself in any of these stories? Participants divulge some of the most challenging things they have endured as entrepreneurs. Participants also share what they are experiencing in their lives now that they are taking their lives back from their business, as well as what they intend to experience in the next year as they take their lives back from their business. You have an opportunity to draw a line in the sand now! 79: Navigating the Dynamics of Family Business
The majority of small businesses are family-owned. Complex dynamics come into play as family members navigate business decisions while seeking to enjoy leisure time together. Join Dr. Sabrina, Mike, and their guest, Alex Schauer, on today’s episode, as Alex shares her personal story of running a business with her family, what she has learned, and how she uses her personal experience to serve her clients. Alex Schauer works with business leaders to increase their revenue. On the day she married her husband, she also became an integral part of their family’s manufacturing company. She learned firsthand the challenges family business leaders face working with siblings and parents—while also growing a thriving business. Over the past 2 years, she has helped over one hundred businesses create a marketing strategy to increase their revenue. She especially loves working with family businesses to help them communicate their marketing message—without telling the story about how their grandfather started the company! Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Marrying into a family business, Alex and her husband spent the first year navigating married life and business life. The family business needed help with marketing, so Alex stepped into that role and found creative ways to market their company and product. Using the StoryBrand framework, their revenue increased by 417%. Other businesses saw what Alex’s business had achieved and reached out for more details. This was Alex’s introduction to working with other businesses to create a marketing strategy to help them increase their revenue. Dr. Sabrina explains psychological dynamics at play in family business and ways to successfully communicate as a family working together. Family members are not always a good fit for the business. Balance your client’s needs with your family’s needs. Communication within a family business needs to involve going to each other when there is a problem, because Mom and Dad won’t always be available in day-to-day operations. Personality types and how they affect family dynamics. Alex addresses what business owners may be missing in marketing and branding. Dr. Sabrina shares the importance of consistency in business, and relates one of her favorite YouTube videos from Simon Sinek, “Do You Love Your Wife?”. The point of the video is that there is not a point in time where your wife fell in love with you, but it was because of an accumulation of the small things you did that showed thoughtfulness. It’s the repetition of these things over a period of time that leads to the realization that you love your spouse. This is key and pertains to marketing and leadership, as Dr. Sabrina details. Alex wraps up the conversation by expressing how it is a privilege to be able to work with family members because we don’t have forever. Be each other’s biggest cheerleaders to help them become the people they need to be in this world. Links and Resources: Are You Ready to Take Your Life Back from Your Business? 78: Veggies First: Doing Good Things on a Daily Basis
Welcome to this episode of Profit by Design, a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group! Today’s subject is a rather juicy one: personal diet and how it can translate into our business life. As someone who has long-struggled with eating healthy and setting time aside for exercise, Mike shares how he has come to understand that a healthy lifestyle is more of a mindset than anything, and how fit people have at least one quality in common: resilience. What he has discovered is that even fit people fall off the health wagon on occasion, but they shake it off and get right back on without using the slip as an excuse to stay in an unhealthy mentality. Join Dr. Sabrina and Mike as they share their personal experiences, and Dr. Sabrina lends professional insight into the correlation between personal and business. Our habits make or break us. Dr. Sabrina teaches how “all or none” thinking sabotages us, as well as how putting Veggies First is critical to our own health and the health of our business. It’s all about consistency. Strive for consistency over perfection. Prepare for a few of your own ‘A-ha!’ moments as you listen in! Show Highlights: Mike draws parallels to how conflict with leading a healthy lifestyle can be similar to how conflict shows up in our business life. Dr. Sabrina illustrates how building good habits apply to both our personal life as well as our business life. We cannot ignore issues that come up in our business. They must be addressed and it doesn’t have to be “all or none”. We can continue our progress forward while working on a solution. 77: The Iconist: The Art and Science of Standing Out with Jamie Mustard
Do you ever feel as though your marketing messages are lost in a sea of digital overwhelm for your clients and customers? If you aren’t being heard, your message dies. This has significant implications for the health of your business. Learn how to harness the primordial laws of human perception to stand out as Dr. Sabrina interviews Jamie Mustard, author of The Iconist. Jamie teaches the science of what causes anything to stand out in the modern world. Through his work, Jamie has observed the primal laws of BLOCKS™, which explain why anything stands out and endures in the mind or fails to. In his book, The Iconist: The Art and Science of Standing Out, through pop stories and comprehensive research, he shows how BLOCKS™ solve the problem of us all being made invisible as we compete for less and less available attention in a messaging and media over-saturated world. He teaches how BLOCKS™ allow anyone in any field to stand out at will based on the natural primordial laws of human perception. As host of a popular RadioActive talk show on KXL101.1 FM in Portland, OR, Jamie interviewed hundreds of designers, innovators, artists, and agents for social change who are having an impact all over the world. An avid consumer of popular culture, Jamie is a graduate of the London School of Economics. He is obsessed with the economics of attention and has consulted for Intel, Cisco, and Symantec. He breaks all this down into why we entrepreneurs need to have a simple way to get our message across in terms of marketing and branding, as well as why this is important for our teams and our overall quality of life as entrepreneurs. Prepare for an eye-opening and fascinating conversation! The Profit by Design Podcast is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: In 1950, a person would be exposed to approximately 250 advertising messages in their day-to-day life. By 1970, the number of advertising messages in a day increased to around 2,000. The last time this was studied was in the late 1990s, and 5,000 - 7,000 advertising messages a day is what a person was exposed to. This was all before the internet hit full stride and before social media. Today, the number of advertising messages we are exposed to on a daily basis is estimated to be 10,000 - 15,000. A person can’t process even 1,000 of these messages, so what this means is that anybody trying to communicate is just one of tens of thousands. Jamie’s book, The Iconist, offers a solution to this very real problem. “Continuous partial attention”, a term coined by Linda Stone, who did some research for Microsoft and Apple, means that we’re being bombarded by so much information that we’re only partially paying attention. As a business owner and entrepreneur, this is a huge thing when you’re trying to get your business noticed. To be iconic is to be the first choice. Anything busy in a world overloaded with content, no matter how good it is, instantly gets discarded. People have to have an idea of who you are and what you’re offering them before they have a chance to think in their lizard-brain. Jamie discusses a chapter in his book called, “Road Signs” and how warning labels work. The book teaches you how to turn some aspect of what you do into something that has the same power as a STOP sign so you get that instant fixation. As long as there’s something behind it that’s genuine and real, people will engage further and remember you. “What is the best thing about myself that intersects with what my customer most cares about?” The answer to that question is what you present in a bold way on your website. Then, they can learn about all of your other strong points that you have to...

76: Are You Maximizing Your Profit Potential?
Dr. Sabrina invites a valued member of the Tap the Potential team to join her on today’s podcast. As a Tap the Potential strategist, specializing in Profit First and Pumpkin Planning, Stacey Seguin supports Tap the Potential’s efforts in identifying ways for clients to save money, MAKE more money and free up their time. Listen in to this thoughtful conversation! It’s a peek inside the internal discussions of the Tap the Potential Strategist team. This conversation offers a fly on the wall glimpse into how our strategists accomplish this with our clients. Show Highlights: Being a business owner and entrepreneur is a lifestyle that can easily lead to burnout. Stacey relates her own compelling story of entrepreneurial burnout. The Tap the Potential team has compassion for what business owners are going through because they’ve all lived that life. Fortunately, there can be great things waiting on the other side of that burnout. A powerful, simple question: What has to change in order to make this possible? Getting sleep and regular downtime is imperative to reducing stress. A comparative advantage (vs. competitive advantage) creates opportunities for an increase in profit. Discover why your industry standard may be your own self-imposed glass ceiling. Tap the Potential focuses on ways to better their clients’ businesses. Stacey and Dr. Sabrina field a question on a business owner’s desire to open a second location. How to know when you are maximizing the profit potential in your business. When we decide to sell our business, we need to be able to show that the business can support a C-suite executive (or several!) and pay appropriate compensation. If we can’t, it’s not sellable.
