#180 Managing the Media in General Practice with Emma Wilkinson
Welcome back to The Business of Healthcare Podcast episode 180 where this week I am talking to Emma Wilkinson who is a Freelance Health Journalist, Editor and Teacher. We had a great discussion regarding Emma’s journey to becoming a journalist, the impact of negative press and her journalistic values. We originally connected through Twitter after Emma had written a post which I thought raised a really balanced argument about what is going on with reporting in General Practice so I sent her a message and now she is a guest on my podcast. There is lots of detail to be taken from this weeks episode and it’s great to have a conversation with Emma discussing what is going on in the field of healthcare. #179 Comparison & Fear of Missing Out
This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I discuss Comparison & Fear of Missing Out. It's something even the most confident of people can worry about and I have to remember that even with the best planning in the world, sometimes you then have to take a step back. We need to prioritise, think about the pressure to contribute and become better at saying no, it's not a bad thing. It's difficult trying to balance all the plates sometimes, but take a step back, breathe and look at the bigger picture. #176 Working Towards A Common Agenda with Alison Reid
Welcome back to The Business of Healthcare Podcast where this week I am talking to Alison Reid who is the CEO at Community Dental Services. What I really liked about this interview is that I don't share the interview questions with the guest in advance and Alison was just in my opinion, so clear in articulating the values, her culture compass, the focus for the next 18 months, her leadership style and I just thought I aspire to be able to communicate like that. There are excellent practical tips in this episode too which I am so grateful to be able to share with you all. "I think that's probably the one thing that shocked me most working much more directly with the dental provider was that I'd often heard the team refer to extractions and it's only when you actually go to a general anaesthetic session where a three year old is coming in to have all of their baby teeth removed, because they have become too decayed to be retained that you realise we've still got a serious problem in this country with understanding how to protect our teeth for the whole of our lives". #173 Are you prioritising your team?
This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I wanted to discuss the importance of making time to meet with your team even when you feel like there is no time. A few of the questions that I discuss 👇 What is the importance of getting more time to talk to get to know each other? What do you prioritise? When we come together as a team, I have some quick ways to kickstart the meeting, you can ask what is working well, what are we finding challenging at the moment? and how have we overcome these challenges? You could ask your team to share an example of how a colleague has supported them recently too. It really is huge making the commitment to prioritise your team and your business. #167 Finding the factors that support your success
#167 Finding the factors that support your success In this solo episode, I am going to be talking about finding the factors that support your success. So for those of you that are new to listening or regular listeners, I would class myself as a very practical and very logical person and the advice that people share on the podcast is also very practical and very logical. A few guests talk about mindset, but it's not a broad theme that we revisit. However, it is really, really, important. Sometimes we can all read the same book and execute the same tactics, but if we don't have the mindset and the mindset habits that lay the foundation for what we do, we will never be as successful as we potentially could be. I wanted to have a discussion around recruitment, and I believe that whether you find it easy to recruit, or you are finding recruitment challenging at the moment, there will be some insights and practical advice that you can take away. In my own company THC Primary Care over the past six years, it hasn't been too difficult to recruit, but it's not been easy. We've advertised a couple of positions recently, and I'm really pleased to say we filled them, but I did my research around the recruitment market. I'm also reached out to a few people and they were so helpful and gave me great advice and I reflected on what has worked in the past. #163 Why Consistency Is The Key To Your Success
163 Why Consistency Is The Key To Your Success In this weeks episode I wanted to talk to you about the importance and the benefits of being consistent, and to raise the question with you around what areas of your business, work or services you could look at to create some more consistent habits and systems for people to follow? I think consistency is really important because it builds trust. People know what to expect, whether that is around the deliverable of a service or your behaviour and how you show up. What happens when people are inconsistent is if you are their manager or in a management position, you then have to go back and check it. You know it wastes time and if you're not brave enough to raise that inconsistency with the person we end up compounding the problem. #161 How to get out of your own way
161 How to get out of your own way We all turn to trusted colleagues or friends for advice, but sometimes we want real advice, not just to be told how brilliant we are. When you find those colleagues it’s their advice that will push you to being a better leader and help you go in the right direction. Today I’m talking about how you don’t have to do everything by yourself, asking for and getting help can make you a stronger leader. Asking for advice can steer you in the right direction of people or of tools and resources. I also share how it’s important to understand what your organisation, business or team requires of you now. The leader you needed to be five years ago will be different to the leader you need to be right here and now. I talk about asking ourselves what is needed for us to be the leader we want to be - now. This week on The Business of Healthcare: The importance of real advice from friends and colleagues. Why you don’t have to do everything by yourself. Other people can help you see the things you can’t. How advice can steer you in the right direction. The importance of using the expertise around you. Why you should ask yourself what the business requires of you. The importance of being the leader you need to be now. #159 Why you should revisit your plans
#159 Why you should revisit your plans Making goals for your work and home life can help give you direction of where you want to go. I’ve always made 12 month goals, but recently I’ve been able to plan further ahead and see the vision of my business for the next 3 years. Today I’m sharing why it’s important to make goals, but also why it’s important to remind yourself of your goals as you go, and to go back and review what you have achieved. I talk about how sometimes when you put the hard work in, you won’t see the fruits of your labour until a few months time, but it will be worth it. I share how it’s important to find the right pace to keep momentum and maintain it. And finally I talk about the importance of a 3 year vivid visions to help you understand where you want your business to go in the next 3 years in order to achieve it. “We’ve always planned for a 12 month cycle and it has worked for us – now it’s – what do the next 3 years look like? #157 Do not say No because you are scared
157 Do not say no because you are scared Welcome back to the business of healthcare podcast. I hope you guys are doing well. In this episode, I wanted to do a little bit of a re-introduction as we have new listeners, which is absolutely fab, and I also wanted to say thank you to our regular listeners, we love that you come back each week and spend your time listening to our Podcast. We launched in September, 2019 and at the time of recording, we have recorded well over 160 episodes and the show continues to grow. On Tuesdays on the Business of Healthcare Podcast, it is usually a solo episode where I'm just sharing what's going on behind the scenes, in my own health consultancy and we've also had a period of time where I've been listening back to some of my favourite episodes and then drawing out a short clip and then re sharing that and providing my commentary on either side. We did that because we've got such an archive of content. I think it's really important to revisit what we've already heard and what we already know, because we're not always consistently practicing it. It's not always about producing new content, sometimes it's about revisiting the discussions that's already been. On Thursdays, that is where I interview a healthcare leader and they share what goes on behind the scenes of their business and their leadership journey to date. The point and purpose of the show is to provide an informal space for you to hear from healthcare stars that you may not be aware of, and also to introduce you to just everyday leaders and their stories. In this weeks episode I discuss why not to say no because you are scared, I wanted to give you a real life example of how I let my imposter syndrome get in the way. I’m sure this has happened to many of us out there! This week on The Business of Healthcare: How I let my imposter syndrome get in the way Discussing your concerns with trusted friends/colleagues Sharing experiences Work with me I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Cedi Frederick. BH147 – Stop trying to do Everything Yourself Welcome back to The Business of Healthcare Podcast with me Tara Humphrey, today I and going to be discussing how and why we need to stop trying to do everything ourselves.
