#257 Assume Positive Intent with Vincent Sai

#257 Assume Positive Intent with Vincent Sai

In this episode, Tara talks to Vincent Sai, CEO of Modality, a GP super partnership. For practices which are not part of a super partnership, there can sometimes be the perception that the partnership is all about money. Following discussions with Vincent (and other Modality colleagues) we now know that, whilst the finances are an important factor, Primary Care professionals choose their vocation because it matters. They have decided to serve their communities, not to become millionaires or billionaires. The Modality group comprises of 135 partners and Vincent was keen to emphasise that they are a partnership and not a dictatorship. No one size fits all and their company's motivation for growth is neither predatory, nor aggressive; they are driven simply by a desire to work at scale, through word of mouth. We also covered: The topic of work-life balance, which is a question usually reserved for women. Vincent has 4 children and is married. Vincent’s strengths and weakness. The role of automation and bots within Modality. The future of Primary Care, and the partnership model. Vincent’s key piece of advice (applicable to anyone, in any industry). And if you are unsure about what a super GP partnership is... A super partnership is formed when several practices merge to form one entity, comprising of several operating practices spread out across an area. This can be done by merging all practices together in their entirety, leaving the organisation operating as one large traditional partnership or LLP. To learn more about the Modality Group, please visit: https://www.modalitypartnership.nhs.uk. #255 How to build legitimacy and enhance your creditability

#255 How to build legitimacy and enhance your creditability

This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I am discussing how to build legitimacy and enhance your creditability. Having a boundary spanning role and building legitimacy go hand in hand.  It can feel like you are constantly trying to build legitimacy and when you join a new organisation – you have to start from scratch and you have to show who you are and share your values.  Other people can build your legitimacy by word of mouth testimonial / referral and this is really important, but you still have to live up to this expectation.  Do this by trying to get to know people, make it personal and make it not all about you but showcase your experience.  Points that are discussed  Offer your help with no expectation  Quietly putting out fires in the background that other people don't know that is there.  See the light at the end of the tunnel  It’s hard but so rewarding  Reflect on those little successes You need to understand the context you work within – please take a listen to my episode 171 Understanding the context you work within by clicking here to explore this further  The most practical piece of advice I can offer is, be visible do what you say you are going to do and make the time to genuinely get to know people and be yourself.      Book mentioned in this episode  Systems Convening    Work with me    I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #250 Bonus Episode - Being the Bearer of Bad News

In this episode, I share my perspective on what it feels like to deliver bad news. People in leadership positions go through this all the time, but their perspective is often not documented and it is just as hard to give bad news as it is to receive it. Join me as I share my planning and thought process on how to go about it. I share the questions I ask myself as I approach it. I talk about how to do it whether it’s a formal conversation or chat over coffee, how I prepare and gather evidence and I talk about how to move on from it in a positive and constructive way. This week on The Business of Healthcare: My planning and thought process when giving bad news. How to raise the issue. What you can do to be prepared ahead of the conversation. How to look at your part in the problem. How to move forward once you’ve given the news. Looking at what you want to happen next. I am delighted to welcome Dr Murray Ellender to the Business of Healthcare podcast this week. As someone who has worked at the top of his organisation for 9 years, whilst juggling the continuing demands of his 18-year GP career, I was keen to quiz Murray on the following: All about eConsult and how the platform works; both for patients and GP practices The NHS healthtech landscape and where the opportunities and the frustrations lie The eConsult financial model Leadership and management approach What’s on the horizon for eConsult going forwards How to juggle a multitude of roles and demands – and enjoy it! #247 Personalised Care Planning in Practice

#247 Personalised Care Planning in Practice

We have an emotional one for you this week where I share my experience of creating a care plan for my youngest who has type 1 diabetes.   It's funny because, on one hand, I say I am absolutely fine, and then when I talk about it, I find it incredibly tough and end up crying, and I’m not really a crier.  Maybe it's the pent-up stress of it all because it's relentless.   I’m sharing my experience because I straddle both worlds. I am a health care professional, and I am a mum and a carer to my daughter with a long-term condition. I know all services are overwhelming, so I do not want to bother anyone. I also know there are online resources there, but I also want to talk to some face to face or at least a phone call with someone who kind of knows me. BUT…..  we do have a tremendous amount of support. I just need to ask for it!   In this podcast, I share:   Personalised Care Planning, the highs and lows Multidisciplinary Team Approach Our lived experience of Type 1 Diabetes The transition from Primary to Secondary School  It can be a lot to process, and it's ok to feel emotional   Work with me    I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #246 Disrupting your thinking to enable change with Dawn Jarvis

As regular listeners will know, I am always keen to promote great leaders on the Business of Healthcare podcast, and offer a platform for others, including myself, to learn from their skills, knowledge, and experiences, particularly when it comes to those leaders who are open and willing to effect disruptive change. Leaders don’t come any more fearless, passionate, or purposeful than this week’s guest Dawn Jarvis, Managing Director of People and OD Partners, a consultancy focused who are committed to supporting the public sector to deliver better value with better leadership. Having worked previously at senior level in many areas of the NHS and the UK public sector more broadly, Dawn is now based in Australia and spends her time coaching and mentoring c-level executives (and their teams), as well as offering services in mediation and facilitation, transformation, strategy and improving team dynamics. Dawn and I discussed: Making the leap into consultancy and growing an internationally renowned business from the grass roots up Comparing notes on the Australian and UK healthcare systems Bridging the gap between what organisations think they want versus what they actually need Dawn’s approach to facilitation How to effect, often difficult, organisational change and transformation Development of The Stellar Model What Dawn most enjoys about her work - and why we believe loving what you do is key to maintaining demand for your services (and realising success) Dawn’s preparations for her PhD and why she thrives on consistently challenging herself   Mentions in this episode: Dawn Jarvis and Munu Wuthuga Dardakiin: Leading Corporate Clans uses the STELLAR MODEL® and the stories of the oldest people in the world, the first people of Australia, to describe what high performance in teams feels like. #245 What I get up to in my CEO week

#245 What I get up to in my CEO week

Someone once said that, as a business leader, you are a Managing Director when you’re actively involved with the day to day running of your business and a CEO when you are able to take a more hands-off approach. So, on the back of the success of my recent Diary of an MD recording, I thought I’d follow up with some commentary on what a typical CEO week looks like for me. In this episode, I discuss: The value of clearing the diary and dedicating time to work through your own professional goals and development, as well as that of your business Learning to put the brakes on when something isn’t going well – and truly accepting that it’s fine to let things go Why saying no to meetings is okay Why pausing on projects is also okay How taking stock, re-evaluating, seeking the perspectives of other people (and working through any lessons learned) will enhance your growth as an individual, and as an organisation When a CEO week can allow your teams the opportunity to step up and grow   Mentions in this episode: BoH episode #230 - Diary of a Managing Director BoH episode #236 – Knowing when to let things go with Jacob Haddad of Accurx The Hewitt Review Blog - What does this mean for primary care networks Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #244 Using Your Gob For Good with Peter McCleave

Back in February 2022 I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Peter McCleave, founder of 10,000 Donors, a campaign to raise public awareness and promote sign up to the stem cell register. The more registered donors there are, the higher the likelihood is of a life-saving stem cell match being found for someone like Pete, who desperately needs it.    Having absolutely smashed the 10,000 target (the benchmark has now been set at 100,000!) I wanted to catch up with Pete, to find out how he’s been doing and to get the lowdown on Gob For Good. This is Pete’s newest initiative building on all the great work of 10,000 Donors to date and focused specifically on boosting the numbers of black and ethnic minority stem cell donors, to ensure there is equitable access to stem cell technology and in finding a possible match.      Pete and discussed:   ·         What’s been happening since we last spoke in 2022 ·         Publicity and promotion, including celebrity endorsements, NHS ConfedExpo, and zombies (!) ·         Living with blood cancer and how Pete has been feeling and coping, and also celebrating success ·         Newcastle University Centre for Cancer’s research, and establishment of a CAR T-cell therapy programme – why donations are so urgently needed So, once again, please take a small amount of time out of your day to listen to this episode, SHARE this podcast and check out the 10,000 Donors and Gob For Good websites, to help raise awareness and support Pete in his mission.    Connecting with Peter McCleave: Gob For Good 10,000 Donors website   Twitter  YouTube     Mentions in Podcast  Get the lowdown on Peter’s journey to date and that of 10,000 Donors in his previous Business of Healthcare podcast episode here We Delete Blood Cancer (DKMS) website African Caribbean Leukaemia trust (ACLT) website Newcastle University Centre for Cancer   Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #243 Everyone's voice matters with Jessica Smith

#243 Everyone's voice matters with Jessica Smith

It's been a big few weeks in terms of new policy and material and the importance of great comms can never be underestimated. With this in mind, I was delighted when Jessica Smith, Co-Founder of SomX agreed to join me on the Business of Healthcare podcast to talk all things PR, marketing and communications. As a truly innovative agency dedicated to elevating their clients in the healthtech and biotech industries, SomX are a leading provider of unique and impactful brand experiences and delivery of carefully tailored and creative communications strategy; from startups, to enterprises, to established, market leading organisations. #242 Making the most of every opportunity with Laura Tomlin

#242 Making the most of every opportunity with Laura Tomlin

This week's Business of Healthcare podcast episode is a leadership and management masterclass, delivered by Director of Ardens Manager, Laura Tomlin.   Ardens provide an end-to-end solution to primary care organisations which consists of two products: Ardens Clinical, a clinical decision support tool delivered to over 86% of GP Practices, and Ardens Manager, which provides dashboards for contracts such as QOF and the Network Contract DES to over 50% of GP Practices and Primary Care Networks. Ardens Manager is also due to launch their new Capacity and Access dashboard focused on improving and monitoring patient experience, access and appointment activity. Laura started at Ardens on a work experience placement and quickly progressed to executive level; all whilst overseeing the development of Ardens Manager from inception. Laura is truly an inspiration for aspiring young female leaders and entrepreneurs.  I wanted to understand more about how Laura has managed and coped with rapid career progression, what her day to day looks like and what structures (and support systems) she has in place to enable her to continue to smash her goals.  Here's what we discussed:  Practical leadership and management advice for those on a similar journey (or seeking to get to where Laura is now)  Laura's framework for managing feature requests and adapting the Ardens Manager product  Dealing with client feedback  What happens if / when things don't go as well as planned  Ardens Board meeting structure and how the wider teams feed in to their senior leads  Assessing the qualities of senior leadership team hires  What Laura has learnt from having professional coaching  Winding down after a typically busy day    Getting in touch:  Ardens main website   Ardens Manager website Laura's email  Laura's LinkedIn profile    I would recommend saving this one as it is definitely an episode that I will revisit again and again!    Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #241 Starting from a place of passion with Maddie Julian - Digibete

DigiBete is an NHS-approved, patient-centred, video platform and app which was set up to support and empower children, young people and families living with diabetes, in particular focusing on provision of resources and raising awareness of type 1 diabetes (which is typically less widely understood). From my own personal experience of having a daughter who received a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes five years ago, I can say that DigiBete has been a lifeline for her in having access to better understanding of her condition and allowing her to connect and grow with her peers within the DigiBete community. So you can imagine my delight in welcoming DigiBete CEO Maddie Julian to The Business of Healthcare podcast this week. Maddie and I share many similarities; not only as business leaders, but in our previous personal experiences of feeling unaware, overwhelmed and under-resourced in the management of our children's healthcare. I was keen to not only provide an opportunity to promote DigiBete but to also find out more about Maddie's own journey from teacher to nationally-approved entrepreneur! We cover: Identification of a gap in the market and starting from scratch Maintaining a clear mission and vision at all times Scaling the business The importance of mentorship and networking What drives Maddie and stops her from returning to her teaching career  The opportunities at play within the newly-created Integrated Neighbourhood Teams Why the four Ts are absolutely key in recognising the symptoms of diabetes; Tired, Toilet, Thirst and Thinner To find out more (and to tap into all of their amazing and freely-available resources), follow this link to the DigiBete website. If you'd like to get in touch with Maddie directly, you can do so here.   Work with me     I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #240 Leadership Accountability and Influence with Shilpa Shah

I am delighted to welcome back North East London Local Pharmacy Community CEO, pharmacist and Business of Healthcare original podcast guest, Shilpa Shah! Shilpa and I first met when we were co-collaborators as part of the Kent and Medway Integrated Medicines Optimisation Board and I was able to witness first hand Shilpa's incredible eye for detail, her ability to influence, and, as a self-confessed 'completer-finisher', her strength in clearly communicating on vision and delivering the required outcomes. It was great to catch up and we were fortunate to have enough time to cover all of the following, and more... Understanding your own leadership style and the importance of always being yourself Utlising hard and soft skills to ensure you can lead in an integrated and inclusive way Community Pharmacy by definition, and the business of pharmacy now, and in the future Managing tensions and bridging the gap between community pharmacy and general practice Overcoming boundaries and establishment of collaborative working, particularly in an increasingly at-scale world Holding ourselves, and others, to account Why patient focus should always be at the heart of everything we do as healthcare leaders   Mentions in this episode: Shilpa's first Business of Healthcare episode where we talked all things Community Pharmacy  Simon Sinek's Golden Circle of Influence   Work with me     I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #238 The importance of checking and challenging each other with Monique Carayol

#238 The importance of checking and challenging each other with Monique Carayol

For regular listeners of The Business of Healthcare podcast, Monique Carayol needs no introduction. She is my friend, ally, sounding board, informal coach; my champion; my go-to person when I need support or advice and an absolute inspiration. As well as being a key influence on me professionally (and personally), Monique is an experienced leadership coach, consultant, ex-NHS director and now MD of Your New Avenue. She’s an award-winning strategist and change agent and started her NHS career as a PA, navigating her way to a high profile board executive director of strategy and transformation role. In 2022, Monique co-founded Bravery in the Boardroom; a movement which focuses on increasing diversity in senior leadership, to ensure that boardrooms are more representative of the communities and staff they serve.  The movement has hosted a series of roundtable discussions and Q&As to help grow and sustain diverse talent at executive level across the NHS and will be launching a podcast and platform in Spring 2023. In this podcast, Monique and I cover the following key topics: The development of our own relationship as fellow female business leaders and entrepreneurs The importance of good communication and drawing on advice from those who know you best Making the move to a life beyond PAYE and the traditional 9 to 5 Growing your network and your business - and learning when you are most effective as a leader (and when you’re not!) Drawing on personal strengths to realise success; “Be Yourself, Back Yourself and Make It Happen” Driving change, tackling inequality and discrimination, challenging ourselves (and others) via the Bravery in the Boardroom webinar series and development of the soon to be launched Bravery in the Boardroom podcast If you’ve also been inspired by Monique and would like to get in touch, her key contact points are here: LinkedIn Twitter You can find out more about Bravery in the Boardroom, and access all of the resources available, via any of your favourite channels: YouTube LinkedIn Twitter Instagram   Work with me     I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #237 What firing fast and hiring slow looks like

#237 What firing fast and hiring slow looks like

In this week’s podcast, I work through the often-thorny topic of recruitment and onboarding, and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, outline my approach when a hire is just not working out and facing down the challenge of letting staff go.   You’ll hear all about:  How promotion of strong content and a creative approach to recruitment can pay off for both recruiters and applicants  Why going with your gut instinct is key (hint: don’t ignore those red flags!)  Why I believe oversharing on information and expectation levels, right from the very beginning, is key to matching the needs of the business with your hire (because the former should always come first)   How to fire effectively and manage an exit in the best way possible  Why hiring slow and firing fast is a mantra I am now firmly subscribed to.  I also offer some simple tips on:  Making sure you stand out to potential employees in an incredibly competitive market  Putting together a polished, supportive, and professional onboarding process  Considering how accessible you need to be as a recruiter, and once your hire is in post  Embedding performance management from day one, giving your new joiner the best possible opportunity to flourish in their role  Work with me                I’m Tara Humphrey and I am the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #236 Knowing when to let things go with Jacob Haddad Accurx

#236 Knowing when to let things go with Jacob Haddad Accurx

I’m incredibly excited to be joined this week by Accurx CEO and Co-Founder Jacob Haddad! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Accurx (where have you been?!) they are a health tech company who specialise in delivery of communications software, primarily (to date) across the general practice landscape. Put simply; if you’ve had a text from your own GP, it’s likely to have been powered by the Accurx solution.  As Jacob is co-founder of one of the healthcare industry’s fastest growing tech company, it will come as no surprise to our regular listeners that I was keen to quiz him on all things leadership, as well as find out more about the Accurx journey more broadly (and a key shift in their product focus and delivery along the way).  So, listen now to find out more about:  Jacob’s leadership style  His role, responsibilities, and ambitions now (versus when he first started out)  What a typical week in the life of a health tech CEO looks like and what Jacob enjoys doing most  Recognising opportunities and how to make the most of the lucky breaks  Reflecting on mistakes and misjudgements and how they can still positively shape progress  Accurx company culture, structure, and evolution  Why maintaining a strong user focus has been fundamental in the Accurx success story  ….and why post-it notes matter when it comes to marketing!  If you’d like to connect with Jacob, and / or find out more, he is contactable via Twitter or LinkedIn    Work with me          I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #235 War Stories & Lucky Breaks with Gus Kennedy

#235 War Stories & Lucky Breaks with Gus Kennedy

I always work hard to dig a little deeper and deliver raw and honest podcast material, from my own perspective and that of others, and this week’s episode truly does not disappoint.   I had the total pleasure of interviewing Gus Kennedy; Managing Director of Hero Health, soon to be new Dad, cricket lover and passionate about all things health tech. Inspired by his GP Mum’s continued frustrations about the need for better tech in Primary Care, Gus founded Hero Health in 2017; building and delivering a software solution to streamline the patient booking process, and which is aimed primarily at improving patient experience when booking an appointment with their local practice.  By Gus’s own admission, realising success in the Primary Care tech space is more than challenging and with this in mind, he and I discussed:  The Hero product itself; the funding mechanisms used to bring the solution to life, the product journey, the system processes and capabilities, their learning curve, and the Hero vision  How Hero can add value, particularly when it comes to cross-organisational aspects of scheduling  Why it’s tough to deliver tech that supports both clinicians and patients, to ensure equal priorities are met  The challenges of having and maintaining exposure to both digitally savvy PCNs, and those PCNs who are further behind in their awareness of available tech (and in some cases, experiences of hostility when making an approach)   The flaws of a traditional procurement process for both PCNs and tech providers and a lack of funding when it comes to research and development  Gus’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs who are hoping to penetrate the healthcare space    To find out more about Hero Health; the work they do, and the solution they offer, check out:  Hero's website  If you’d like to connect with Gus, you can do so here.    Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy.
