185: How TGIN Founder and Breast Cancer Survivor Chris-Tia Donaldson Built A Natural Hair Empire
Today in the guest chair we have Chris-Tia Donaldson, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Thank God It’s Natural (tgin), a manufacturer of natural hair and skin care products. Prior to starting tgin, Chris-Tia, a two-time Harvard graduate, worked at a top law firm in Chicago. It was there she realized that she wasn’t receiving the support she needed to advance in her career. She wasn’t willing to play the game anymore, so she decided to get out and create her own game. Like many of us, Chris-Tia struggled with her hair while navigating the corporate world. There weren’t a lot of products for kinky, curly, and wavy hair, so she set out to create a product that made her feel confident about her curls. Tgin is currently sold at Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Sally’s Beauty, Walgreens, and now Ulta. Chris-Tia is so transparent in this episode, especially when it comes to the money required to scale and maintain a business. I’m excited for you to hear! 184: How Real Housewives of Atlanta Star Tanya Sam Pivoted from Nursing to Tech Investor
Today in the Side Hustle Pro guest chair we have Tanya Sam. Tanya is a tech-savvy investor who has made it her mission to empower the next generation of minority entrepreneurs. You also know her from TV. She appears on one of my favorite guilty-pleasure shows, The Real Housewives of Atlanta! She is currently Director of Partnerships at TechSquare Labs, Co-leads the Ascend 2020 Atlanta program that supports minority and female founders, and Co-founded BuiltxWomen, a business accelerator for female entrepreneurs. It may come as a surprise that Tanya didn’t always have the desire to pursue entrepreneurship in technology. She actually studied to be a nurse and had a 10-year career in the industry. She started helping her fiancé with his business on her days off and eventually decided to start her own business. With her background as a side hustler and as an entrepreneur, she has mentored over 60 companies with women and minority founders and helped invest in over 50 companies that have generated a total of over $100 million in revenue. Making the shift from healthcare to tech wasn’t easy. In this episode, Tanya dives deep into how she conquered imposter syndrome during this huge pivot in her career. With $100 in cash, her own kitchen, and the simple notion that people should follow their hearts, Lisa started building the collection that would become a beauty revolution. Today’s episode is a REWIND episode with Kim Lewis, the Founder of CurlMix. Kim and her husband Tim are two entrepreneurs I really admire. They are teammates in life, love, and business and their hard work has really paid off. Since this episode originally aired, they’ve grown exponentially, appeared on Shark Tank, turned down a $400,000 offer from the Sharks, and have turned CurlMix into a company with a $12 million dollar valuation. In this episode, you’ll hear them in the early days, before they zeroed in on MAKING products and were still selling do it yourself kits. 175: REWIND: Meet Janice Bryant Howroyd: The first African American Woman To Run A $1-Billion Business
Today’s episode is a REWIND episode with Janice Bryant Howroyd, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The ACT-1 Group, the largest privately held, woman-owned workforce solutions company founded in the U.S. I love this episode because Janice exudes confidence, energy, and just makes you want to walk into a room and take up space. As Auntie Janice (as I now refer to her in my head) likes to say, “knowledge married to experience breeds confidence.” When you have the experience and knowledge you must own that confidence. I listened to this episode twice as I was riding to the Today Show for my appearance in August 2018, and it really did give me confidence. I often re-listen to this episode whenever I’m nervous about rising to a new level in my business. I’m excited for you to hear Janice share how she became the first African American woman to operate a company that generates more than $1 billion in annual revenue. 173: How Podcasting Helped Me Find My Voice and My Purpose
I’m in the guest chair this week talking about how podcasting helped me figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Growing up, people often told me I was a good writer and I was fascinated by how people got jobs on TV, so when I learned about the profession of broadcast journalism, I thought the combo of writing and TV was the perfect fit. I pursued a Communications degree in undergrad and had a number of internships for major companies, but I graduated not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. The quest to determine how best to combine my interests and skills would continue for most of my life. In the summer of 2015 when I first learned about podcasts things started to take shape. I started contemplating launching my own, and in June 2016 I did just that! I could have never imagined I would be here with Side Hustle Pro a little over three years later. In this episode, I explain how podcasting has allowed me to see how I can use my voice and my experiences to impact others for the better. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify. 171: How this CEO Opened a Successful Bed & Breakfast on the Side (Lisa Brown Alexander of Wellspring Manor & Spa)
Today in the guest chair, we have Lisa Brown Alexander, Founder, and CEO of Nonprofit HR, and owner of the Wellspring Manor & Spa. I’ve interviewed a lot of side hustlers, but it’s not often that I interview a side hustler who is not an employee at their full-time job, but the CEO! Lisa was driven to serve the often-overlooked human resources needs for the social impact sector, and that is what first led her to found Nonprofit HR, now a 50-plus employee organization and the leading talent management firm in the country that works exclusively with the nonprofit sector. It took her about 15 years to build a solid team at Nonprofit HR, that would allow her to take a step back and focus on other initiatives. One initiative was opening the Wellspring Manor & Spa with her husband. It is an oasis of peace, quiet, and renewal created for guests seeking a relaxing, wellness-infused experience. Neither she nor her husband had a background in hospitality, but they purchased a property and launched within a year. In today’s episode, you will find out what led her to create the Wellspring Manor and Spa, even though she already had a booming career AND how she juggles being the boss at Nonprofit HR and at Wellspring Manor and Spa. 170: How Black Women Can Build Legacy Wealth (w/ Dr. Pamela Jolly)
Today in the guest chair we are exploring a topic that is near and dear to my heart: legacy wealth building in the African-American community. And there is no better person to break down this topic than today’s guest, Dr. Pamela Jolly. Dr. Jolly is a graduate of Hampton University (B.S.), The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania (MBA), Boston University School of Theology ((Th.M.), and the Graduate Theological Foundation (Ed.D). She started her career in banking and eventually saw a need to leverage her corporate experiences to assist minority business enterprises to grow. So, in 2004, she launched Torch Enterprises Inc., a firm committed to developing minority enterprises capable of arriving at legacy wealth both individually and corporately for their communities. For over a decade, she has been committed to developing data-driven strategies that lead to wealth as a legacy in the African American Community. Dr. Jolly uses her extensive background in financial services, strategy, community development, and theology, to help entrepreneurs and organizations succeed. 169: How Karleen Roy Created A Boutique Creative Agency for Celebrity Clients
Today in the guest chair, we have Karleen Roy, a woman who is as extraordinary as the events she creates. She is the Founder of The Vanity Group, a boutique creative agency specializing in bespoke events and luxury services. After graduating from Howard University, she moved to New York to take an unpaid internship at Island Def Jam. Her hard work spoke for itself and she was eventually hired as a senior executive assistant at Bad Boy Entertainment. Her boss, Sean “Diddy” Combs trusted her to coordinate the efforts of his multi-million dollar business entities, external partnerships and talent relationships, and so much more. The confidence, expertise and international connections Karleen developed over the course of her career inspired her to strike out on her own and launch The Vanity Group. Karleen now specializes in producing magical moments and it shows. The Vanity Group quickly became the firm of choice for a variety of corporate clients and A-list celebrities, from Justin Bieber and Kobe Bryant to Cardi B and DJ Khaled. 167: How Rochelle Porter Launched Her Apparel and Lifestyle Brand While Working Full-Time
Today in the guest chair, we have Rochelle Porter, also known as the “Print Queen.” She is a designer who has never met a blank surface she didn’t want to draw on. But, she nearly abandoned the idea of being a designer when she learned of the unethical labors practice in the fast fashion industry. After learning this, she pursued a career in a variety of industries including investment banking and communications. At her lowest moment, she found an eviction notice on the door. It was at that moment she knew something had to change, so she made the move back to Atlanta. Slowly but surely, clues that she should look into fashion again started coming into her life and she took them as a sign to get moving. She did her research and launched her lifestyle brand that specializes in responsibly made fashion and home decor all while holding down steady consulting gigs. Sassy Jones has both a brick-and-mortar store located in Richmond, Virginia and an online store and thousands of customers all over the world tune in weekly every Wednesday night to shop during their “Sparkle Parties.” I’ve been fascinated by how Charis grew her boutique into a 7-figure business, so I had to have her in the guest chair. 165: How PhD, Gettin’ Grown Podcast Host, and Coach of #TeamTypingFast Dr. Tykeia Robinson Juggles it All (Side Hustle Spotlight)
This week, I chatted with Dr. Tykeia Robinson (also known as Keia). You may know her as co-host of the Gettin’ Grown Podcast, but she is also a PhD in Higher Education and multi-passionate side hustler with over 10 years of experience in higher education. She is also Head Coach of #TeamTypingFast, an online community of practice for anybody with work to do. I started getting to know Keia last year after attending the Gettin’ Grown live podcast show. Fun fact: she and co-host Jade are one of the BIGGEST inspirations for me doing my own live show. One of the things I admire most about Keia is her commitment to supporting, encouraging, and uplifting Black women. In addition to Gettin’ Grown and #TeamTypingFast, Keia’s full-time job involves doing research that informs curriculum, policy, and practice, and she develops training for school faculty leaders. 164: How The Founder of The Village Market Is Bringing National Exposure To Black-Owned Businesses (w/ Dr. Key Hallmon)
Today in the guest chair we have Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon (also known as Dr. Key), Founder, and CEO of The Village Market. I was blessed to cross paths with Dr. Hallmon at Summit 21; shout out to past Side Hustle Pro guest Jewel Burks Solomon for introducing us! Dr. Key started her career in education, but she wanted more freedom and flexibility. She wanted to be able to take her students outside. Soon got the idea for what was then called The Village Cafe, an economical vehicle that empowers the Black community through cooperative economics. From that seed, The Village Market has grown into an economic vehicle for #blackownedbusiness like no other. Prior to launching The Village Market, Dr. Hallmon had no experience at all planning events. She had never even booked a venue for an event, much less create her own event with hundreds of vendors, but she had a vision and she wasn’t scared to make it come to life. The Village Market is now not only a market, but also offers summits, trainings, and workshops for small Black-owned businesses. 163: From Side Hustler to CEO: Meet Sonia Lewis, Founder of The First African American & Woman-Owned Student Loan Repayment Company
Today in the guest chair we have Sonia Lewis, the CEO of the Student Loan Doctor, LLC. Her business has been recognized as the first African American and woman-owned student loan repayment company in the country. You might be surprised to hear that before starting the Student Loan Doctor, Sonia didn’t have personal budgeting discipline, she was living paycheck-to-paycheck, and grappling with her own student loan debt. Even with a background and passion for higher education, Sonia was frustrated with the process of how to get information about her student loans and knew she had to do something. She worked on her personal finances and eventually started working with clients to help them manage their student loan debt. Through trials, testing, and gathering feedback, Sonia now runs a six-figure business and employs a team of full time and contractors. I am interrupting the pre-scheduled program for August, which was the Side Hustle Series, to bring you a quick entrepreneur diaries update to share my experience on the TODAY Show!! In this episode, I share how this opportunity came to be, the behind-the-scenes of what it’s like to be on the Today Show, and the lessons I learned from all of it. 159: How to NOT Let Fear Cripple You When You’re Starting Your Side Hustle (Side Hustle Series Pt 1)
This episode kicks off The Side Hustle Summer Series! This August, I’m doing a series all about side hustling and breaking down: How to not let fear cripple you when you’re starting your side hustle How to build the foundation of your business even when it’s still a side hustle Everything I learned about balancing my side hustle with my 9 to 5How to market your side hustle for FREE when you’re just getting started How to finance your side hustle before it’s making Money (AND how to start monetizing) In this kickoff episode, I get open and vulnerable about my journey from side hustle to a profitable business and talk about the disparaging thoughts I used to tell myself. I was so afraid of people thinking I was a failure because I didn’t secure a job offer after earning my Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Michigan. I eventually learned that fear was holding me back, instead of helping me grow. I hope that sharing my thoughts and how I reframed them helps you change your thinking and kickstart your side hustle. Determined to build a business with women, like the women in her family, she ensures that all of Loza Tam’s products are crafted by women entrepreneurs, so they can support their families and continue to plant the same seeds that were planted in her as a young adult. 150: After a Brain Disorder Forced Her to Retire Early, Her Greatest Business Idea was Formed (Zakia Blaine of FBF Fitness)
Today in the guest chair we have Zakia Blain, the Founder of FCKbeingFAT (FBF Fitness). With no background in fitness, but plenty of background in every fad diet and weight loss trick around, Zakia simply wanted to inspire others, while helping them lose weight the right way. Through the creation of her international FBF Weight loss Challenge and FBF Fitness apparel, she has managed to do just that. While on the journey to expand FBF Fitness, Zakia discovered that her audience was interested in shapewear. So rather than promote another company’s brand, she decided to create her own and, with that, FBF Fitness evolved into FBF Body. The highly sought after shapewear has taken on a cult following of its own, largely in part due to Zakia’s open and honest method of sharing herself actually wearing it and looking amazing while doing so. In today’s episode, we will learn how she got started, how she works through having a brain disorder to grow her business, and the hard lessons she’s learned along the way about hiring and more. 148: Meet the Co-Founder of Africa's 1st Brand of Foldable Flats (Taffi Ayodele of Thando’s)
Today in the guest chair, we have Mrs. Taffi Ayodele the co-founder of Thando’s, a Lagos and NY based fashion company. Thando’s shoes are foldable ballerina flats, giving women a compact and comfortable shoe option that they can easily take with them on the go. Thando's is the brainchild of Taffi and her husband J.G. They met while pursuing their MBAs at the NYU Stern School of Business. Their love for each other, love for Africa and love for art, inspired the couple to create an innovative footwear line that facilitates a modern woman’s busy lifestyle while supporting African artists. Thando’s provides a platform for creative talent on the African continent by crowd-sourcing designs from African men and women who would otherwise have limited opportunities to design for a global audience. How amazing is that? That said, it was a lot of work to bring the brand to life. As Taffi shares in this episode, it wasn’t easy picking up and moving to a continent that she’d never lived on, plus learn to navigate the business in a completely different culture and navigate the highs and lows of that. But Taffi and JG were determined and they have created a remarkable product and are making their footprint across the globe (pun intended). 144: The Founder of Unsun Cosmetics is Making Mineral Sunscreen For Every Shade of Brown
Today in the guest chair, we have Katonya Breaux, the founder and President of Unsun Cosmetics, Inc., a Los Angeles-based skin care company specializing in natural sun protection and beauty products for all skin shades and tones. Katonya herself has worn sunscreen diligently since her twenties. In this episode, she shares why she initially became so diligent with her sunscreen, and how as she matured, she became more health conscious. She realized that even someone with her complexion could get skin cancer. As a result, the idea of sunscreen was no longer just about vanity for her. Protecting her skin meant protecting her life. On today’s episode, she talks about the tedious process of creating a product that met her own personal high standards and is a natural SPF 30 sunscreen that doesn’t leave the white “residue” that us women with lots of melanin often experience with other SPF brands. As Katonya says, “Everyone should be able to look their best while protecting themselves from the harmful effects of the sun.” Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher Links mentioned in this episode Unsun Cosmetics Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Announcements If you’re looking for a community of supportive side hustlers who are all working to take our businesses to the next level, join us here: http://sidehustlepro.co/facebook Social Media Info Unsun Cosmetics - @unsuncosmetics Side Hustle Pro – @sidehustlepro #SideHustlePro Hosted on Acast.
