240: How Alexia “Chef Lex” Grant Went From Corporate Cooking To Carmelo Anthony’s Chef
For Alexia Grant aka “Chef Lex” aka “The Bubble Chef,” cooking was always a family affair, or how she puts it, “a collaborative effort.” And that motivation has taken her very far. She has cooked for the likes of Carmelo and LaLa Anthony, Malcolm Jenkins, Meek Mill, Angela Simmons and Lauryn Hill, and worked with brands like Lululemon and Verizon. Growing up with a garden outside of her home, and a loving family who made sure she had a good breakfast in the morning, food was a big thing for her. Although Lex wasn’t sure of what she wanted to do post-high school, it was her grandfather who was her motivation to pursue a career in cooking. Before he passed, he had a real sit-down moment with her about next life steps, which encouraged her to eventually apply to culinary school. At 19, Lex got her first high paying catering job that catapulted her into the side hustle of catering, which ultimately led her to full-time entrepreneurship. Not to mention, after that catering job, she started telling everyone that she was a “chef” and no one could tell her otherwise. From contracting her services to now running her own lifestyle management firm, and having her own pop-up restaurant, Comfort Kitchen, Chef Lex is a force to be reckoned with. And as my Jamaican sista, I must say, her grind is impeccable. 238: How a “No” Pushed Marvina Robinson Into Creating Her Company, B. Stuyvesant Champagne
Marvina Robinson is the founder and CEO of her own boutique brand champagne company, B. Stuyvesant Champagne that was launched in February 2020. Her journey was anything but “ordinary.” She puts it this way: “There was no direct correlation.” With a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Master’s degree in Statistics, and the career path of working in finance on Wall Street for over 20 years, the entrepreneur bug hit her, big time. Prior to Stuyvesant (as it’s affectionately called), Marvina had her own indoor cycling studio, which she later converted into a café. After the landlord of the building the café was hosted in wouldn’t allow her to sell beer or wine, she took his “no” as a lead to make her vision a reality, and open up a champagne bar. So she took the next lead, and ventured to France to make connections in the champagne and wine world. While sitting down eating crepes in France at 5 a.m., she met someone who would help her make the introductions she needed to succeed, and the outcome of that is what you see today. Although Marvina didn’t know what she was looking for, at first, and her business plan was in her brain, notebook and laptop, she’s proud that she built her business incrementally, and her “true business” is now falling into place. The insane grind included red eye flights between Manhattan and France for almost a year. For Marvina, it was all worth it. 237: How Temidayo Adedokun Is Bringing African Culture, Even to the Tiniest of Us, With Ade + Ayo
You’d probably think that launching a new business in the middle of a pandemic wouldn’t be the most “received” idea, but for Temidayo Adedokun, she accepted the challenge. In 2020, Temidayo launched Ade + Ayo, a collection of beautifully crafted pieces that make the African aesthetic practical for even the littlest among us. Her pieces keep things modern and affordable for parents, too. Interestingly enough for Temidayo, she’s no stranger to the entrepreneur world as her parents paved their own way, although they encouraged her to take a more “traditional” path. And for her, that was law. While attending Yale for her studies, during her second semester, she became dissatisfied with the path she’d chosen. After Yale, the future entrepreneur decided to pursue corporate law to pay off debt (so relatable!), but ended up hating it and leaving that firm after nine months because she felt like she sold her life to the firm. Upon trying to figure things out and working at a boutique law firm, Temidayo became pregnant with her first baby. She immediately became hooked on watching YouTube videos and finding ways she could bring Nigerian and African culture into her son’s life. After searching on Etsy and other places, she couldn't find what she was looking for, which was African prints and colors on soft fabrics, that she’d feel comfortable putting on a baby, but also felt modern. Enter Ade + Ayo. Here’s what you’ll learn about Temidayo and her business from this episode: How the plan to work at the firm while working on Ade + Ayo on the side, until it got enough traction didn’t quite happen How she learned effective e-commerce while simultaneously becoming a mom How she positioned herself for years to be in the position she’s in today Listen to this episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud This episode is brought to you by: Skillshare Explore your creativity at Skillshare.com/hustle and get a free trial of Premium Membership GustoAs a Side Hustle Pro listener, you’ll get three months free when you roll your first payroll. You’ve been equipped for this. You’re ready! In three tips, I’m sharing how to take action and get things done, and put your side hustle out in the open because like I’ve said before...2021 is the year that we’re talking our side hustle seriously. You’ve already gotten the motivation you need to stop procrastinating and just go for it. We’ve even talked about pushing past the fear and doubts that might come from ourselves and others. So, this week, I want to tell you my 3-step process for taking action, making moves, and progressing on your side hustle. It’s a tried and true formula that I’ve been using for the past five years. In this episode, I’m sharing what those three things are. I’m giving you real-world examples that I’m implementing right now, and that you can start working on too! 233: How to Overcome Doubt and Move Forward With Your Side Hustle
Life happens, right? So here we are with Week 2 of the Side Hustle Pro Bootcamp! I’m sharing my thought process and tips on how to push past the doubt and move forward with your side hustle idea. After Week 1 of the Side Hustle Pro Bootcamp, a lot of people reached out to me to share the doubts and fears that have been holding them back. I get it. Starting a new hustle is 90% mental in the beginning. You’ve got to work up the mental courage, because staying in the “indecision zone” is NOT beneficial to where you want to be. Plus, you’re withholding your greatness from the world. Why not you? You’re just as capable, talented, and dedicated as anyone else. Your idea and side hustle are worthy of your attention and focus. In this episode I’m sharing real practices I use to break out of analysis paralysis and get down to business. 232- Just Do It! Don’t Procrastinate, Start Your Side Hustle This Year
For the next four weeks, you’ll have a chance to be a part of the Side Hustle Pro Bootcamp. Don’t worry, there are no pushups, workout plan, or anything of the sort, but what you will get a grasp of is how to break things down into super small achievable steps to actually achieve your side hustle dreams. This week’s episode is all about how to START. No more procrastination. No more playing around. In 2021, we’re going to commit and do this! Besides, the hardest part of the battle is actually starting your side hustle, but after that, it gets easier. And to be honest, you’re probably stalling because of the drive to be perfect. Stalling and overthinking can create a hamster wheel effect that’s very hard to get out of, even when you know it’s counterproductive and not necessary. Instead of focusing on the wrong things, let’s focus on the right things. I’m taking you through the journey of: saying “no” to your own stall tactics and saying “later” to your own excuses, all while giving you three tips to actually start your side hustle. 231: How to Decide What Your Side Hustle Should Be in 2021
The phrase “side hustle” has become such a buzz word these days, but I’ve learned that “side hustle” means different things to different people. I, personally, define it as a passion project you’d do even if you don’t make money from it. That’s how I got here with Side Hustle Pro. In this week’s episode, we look into how to figure out what your side hustle should be, right in time for 2021! For me, it took a lot of figuring out and stumbling, but I got it together and was able to cultivate it into what you see today. If I can do it, so can you, and I’m walking you through how to do it. And it starts with these three questions: What am I good at? What do I enjoy doing in my spare time? What would I do even if I wasn’t getting paid for it? I even touch on unlearning internalized messages we’ve believed about ourselves, and doing away with boxes we’ve been placed in, in order to succeed. Your 2021 side hustle is waiting for you to start, so go get it! Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 230: How Black Women Can Build Legacy Wealth
In this week’s episode, we talk about building and leaving lasting generational wealth in the African-American community. Dr. Pamela Jolly shares how our human, cultural, intellectual, social, and spiritual capital all play a part in the fulfilled life we should all strive for when it comes to wealth. She also explains how her various educational experiences and degrees (MBA, Ed.D, Th.M, and more) allowed her to assist minority business enterprises to grow, and redefine the way they saw money. But, her journey wasn’t always this stable. Her journey with learning about money started when her dad withdrew all financial support from her in college (á la Whitley Gilbert). It forced her to understand what money really is, and set her on the path to learning all about wealth. In this episode, you’ll hear: ⦿ Why you need to have a good relationship with time to have a good relationship with money, ⦿ How we can all begin to build and chart our path to wealth, and ⦿ The importance of understanding history as it relates to wealth Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 229: How to Actually Make Money Podcasting
Whether you’re thinking about starting a podcast or already have one, one of the biggest questions that you might have is: “Will I even make money doing this?” And the short answer is: “yes!” After a year of earning consistent revenue with my podcast, I was able to quit my job to focus on Side Hustle Pro full-time, all in the name of monetization. I didn’t start out with the mindset of making money off my podcast, but I quickly began to test and see that it was possible. Trust me, I secured a $4,000 multi-month sponsorship contract on my first try. In this week’s episode, I help you set realistic expectations when it comes to podcast monetization. I also breakdown how, exactly, to make money podcasting, and how and when I started earning revenue. There are tons of ways to do it, and we’ll focus on the big three: Creating valuable content for future clients Developing products listeners love and need, and All things sponsorships Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 226: How The Founder Of Grace Eleyae Went From Selling Products On Etsy To Selling One Of Oprah's Favorite Things
Today in the guest chair we have Grace Eleyae, the Founder of Grace Eleyae Inc. Grace Eleyae Inc. began with their now trademark product, the Original Slap, which stands for (Satin-Lined Cap)®. The Slap is a stylish cap that retains moisture (satin-lining), stays on your head at night (with its signature elastic band) and is fashionable enough to wear outside. It all started in 2014 when Grace took a trip to Kenya that changed her life. During a bumpy 8-hour car ride, all the hair on the back of her head broke off - the result of her chemically straightened hair and constant friction against the headrest. And the rest would be history. Later that year, Grace started working on a solution to her completely damaged, broken and dry chemically straightened hair, and the first prototype of the Slap was created. In this episode, Grace shares: How a bumpy car ride and hair breakage led her to develop a prototype for her ideal cap What happened after she created that prototype, including the reaction from her family How and when she decided to start selling her products on Etsy What made her decide to fully launch Grace Eleyae What happened when she initially reached out to get beauty bloggers to review the Slap, and so much more One thing that just happened, Grace Eleyae’s Foldover Satin Lined Beanie just made Oprah’s Favorite Things List for 2020! Let’s find out all about the brand that Oprah and more are giving rave reviews. Caroline Owusu-Ansah is the Founder and Smooth Operating Officer at LUV SCRUB, which is a company that focuses on smooth skin by the way of exfoliation. 224: How The Founder Of BOOMBOX Boxing Club Is Navigating Owning A Fitness Business During Covid
It’s not often that you hear about two co-founders meeting on Tinder. But that’s actually the business origin story of this week’s Side Hustle Pro guest, Angela Jennings of BOOMBOX Boxing Club. BOOMBOX is a boxing-inspired, hip-hop-fueled fitness studio. A finance professional at a global accounting firm by day, Angela always knew she wanted to tap into her interest in food or fitness. After being introduced to boxing three years ago by Tinder match and co-founder, Reggie Smith, Angela became passionate about the sport's potential to be a fun and powerful workout to people of all fitness levels and backgrounds. The pair launched their first studio in Washington, DC in 2019 and it's now host to members who sweat through themed boxing workouts or private training with coaches. In this episode, I really love what Angela had to share about: Deciding on a location when each co-founder lives in a different city Building buzz leading up to opening day Navigating the fitness industry during covid and how they are working to adapt How she’s doing this all while side hustling during a pandemic and so much more! 223: This Lingerie Brand Founded By A Side Hustler Is Redefining Beauty (Vera Moore of Love, Vera)
Vera Moore always had an interest in creating something of her own. Like many of us, she didn’t know what that would look like, but she knew that she wanted to take ownership of her future. After dabbling in other hustles, from a swimwear line to a tax business, Vera was drawn to creating her own lingerie line. She saw the lack of representation of Black women and women of all sizes from the brands on the market, and knew there was a great opportunity for something better. So she created her own inclusive lingerie line: Love, Vera. All while side hustling. In this episode, I really love what Vera had to share about: Her experience taking a sourcing trip to look for products Creating the brand identity for Love, Vera Storing inventory in her parents basement and fulfilling orders herself until 1AM in the morning! 219: Meet Jerri Evans, The Turning Natural Juice Bar Founder Transforming Lives in the Black Community (REWIND)
Side Hustle Pro alum Jerri Evans founded six Turning Natural Juice Bar storefronts in eight years and has employed over 87 people in her community in that time. Growing up in SE Washington, D.C. she watched her mom and others struggle to find healthy options, while carry-outs and corner stores were readily available. Now she is leaving an indelible impact in SE and beyond. Jerri first sat in the guest chair in 2017, and I have been endlessly impressed and inspired by her ever since. I love that she makes it a point to transform areas that historically do not have access to fresh produce. She aims to eradicate food deserts (areas that do not have access to such healthy options). Now with catchy names like Swizz Beets, Green Latifah, and Mi’Kale Jackson, Jerri has initiated creative ways to invite customers to try out cold-pressed juices they’ve never had. Listen to this rewind episode to hear how Jerri transformed a tragic life event into an impactful business that’s ensuring better health for underserved communities and so much more. 215: How this Busy Mom Created Play Pits All-Natural Deodorant for Kids (REWIND)
This week we have a rewind episode with @PlayPits founder Chantel Powell. As a busy working mom and wife, Chantel found herself shuttling her son Kameron between summer basketball camp and football practice. She quickly noticed that he was starting to smell like a grown man because he was sweating buckets under his armpits, and that’s when her innovative mindset kicked in. Chantel decided to develop an all-natural deodorant for her son. And so Play Pits the brand was born. Play Pits is a 100% all-natural deodorant. It’s free of aluminum, parabens, synthetic fragrances and other harsh chemicals. While it can be used on the most gentle skin types, it also packs a strong punch against odors. Although it started out with a focus on kids, it has an adult line as well, and I love the Queen deodorant! With recent features by @Beyonce and the grand opening of an official Play Pits warehouse, Play Pits is growing and thriving. She is the founder of Hairbrella, an innovative rain hat combining fashion and function to protect women's hair from the rain. Not only is she an entrepreneur, but an attorney, inventor, and speaker. Tracey’s original plan was to “get law school out of the way,” then get a job, and she did just that. While working in intellectual property as a lawyer, the entrepreneurial bug started tapping on her shoulder. It reminded her of the promise she made to herself prior to beginning law school. Tracey vowed to not spend more than five years in a legal career without pursuing the business ideas she had for her life: that included her first entrepreneurial endeavor, Eboticon. Although, along with some colleagues, she’d been working on Eboticon, an emoji app to represent Black culture on nights and weekends. While still working full time as a lawyer, Tracey managed to meet her deadline, pace herself, save up a year’s worth of income, and complete the first test version of Hairbrella. Since I last spoke with Lisa, she now offers products such as an esthetician-grade, automatic microneedling tool, an oil serum, and a laser for hyperpigmentation. Things have been booming! You know the notion of focusing on what you have first, so you can get that where it needs to be before you add new products? Well for Lisa, she went against the grain of that and is carving out a new path for her company. 211: My Biggest Lessons From 4 Million Podcast Downloads
Four years, and four million podcast downloads later, I’m continuing to share with you the lessons I have learned along this journey. I never thought I’d leave my job to do podcasting full-time, but I’ve grown a lot, personally and professionally, and am dedicated to helping you grow as well. Of course I had dreams of success, but when I started, I just wanted to gain inspiration from my guests, and figure out how to use the talents and skills that I had. I didn’t know where my path would lead, but I tested things out and they didn’t always work. There was definitely a lot of trial and error involved, but that only lit a fire in me to succeed. I put what I learned from research, trainings, and conferences into practice immediately. I’ve identified some of the key factors that have allowed me to have a successful podcast. In this episode, I discuss: Doing away with the fear of being pigeon-holed How to own your lane in the podcasting space How to make a long-term game plan Setting realistic expectations, and more Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 210: How I Did it: Turning A Podcast Into A Full-Time Career
Let me let you in on a little secret, I first started side hustling to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. It was not to turn my side hustle into a full time job. But, I also want to assure you, there’s nothing wrong with the latter, either. In today’s episode, I take it all the way back! We’re talking childhood with pit stops at my first internship, ever, with HBO, the days of wanting to be a broadcast journalist in college, the dreaded post-grad life, finding my way to business school, and eventually creating what you now know as Side Hustle Pro. It’s been quite a journey! I delve a bit deeper than I have in the past, of how I went from a side hustler to making my podcast into a full-time business. I wanted to go into as much detail as possible so I could help and inspire someone else. Let’s remember, not all stories are linear, and that’s okay. In the midst of my story, I also highlight Black women who have helped me at pivotal moments along the way. It’s because of these relationships and sisterhood that I am the woman I am today. 209: 7 Tried and True Tips for Side Hustling When You Don’t Have a Lot of Time
Lately I’ve been reminiscing on the days when I was a certified side hustler. When I was working full time and working on Side Hustle Pro on nights and weekends, I lived a completely different life from the one I live now as a full-time entrepreneur (plus a full-time entrepreneur with a baby). Being a new mom has reminded me of the side hustle mindset and all the principles that led me to be in a position of making the most out of the time that I have. The key to the side hustle life is learning how to get a lot done with not a lot of time. I did it before (and am beginning to get back into doing it again) and you can too! In this episode, I’m taking you through my seven tried and true tips that made me a side hustle queen. Take a listen to this episode, so you can master the art of the side hustle, too. 208: How I’m Transitioning Into Motherhood & Easing Back Into Entrepreneur Life
I’m coming to you live with another solo episode, and the topic of discussion: transitioning into motherhood and getting back into the entrepreneurship life. I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look into how I’m flowing in this new uncharted territory for my life and my career. I went from being an entrepreneur with no kids to a momtrepreneur with new expectations, some of which I've had to shift my gears about with regard to my new lifestyle. Because my old life was all I knew, I was subconsciously basing my post-maternity leave expectations on my old life, which didn’t leave room for the ebbs and flows of my new normal with baby and business. And in the midst of it all, there were a few things I didn’t anticipate. Take a listen to this episode to find out how I had to re-frame my personal expectations for myself, re-learn how to set deadlines, and guard my priorities; adopt a new life and work style, and what I’m learning from the lives of other momtrepreneurs. 207: Entrepreneur Diaries: I Had A Baby During the COVID-19 Pandemic!
Guys, I’m back! And if you’re asking yourself, ‘Back? Where did she go?’ then this is the episode for you to listen to. I’m fresh off maternity leave. My husband and I had our first child, a beautiful baby boy back in April, and despite all that’s going on, I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for how things turned out. When we found out we were pregnant, we could have never imagined that we would be having a baby during a pandemic. The only Corona I knew about was the beer. But we did it and we made it through with God’s grace. I was fortunate to be able to select and be seen by all Black women doctors for my prenatal care. My baby was even delivered by a Black woman (Nigerian!) doctor, so it was just #BlackGirlMagic throughout my entire experience. In today’s episode, I’m sharing my: ✔︎ What it felt like having a baby shower one week and going into quarantine lockdown the next week ✔︎ My experiences, cravings, and symptoms during every trimester ✔︎ The ways Coronavirus impacted my pregnancy and postpartum experience ✔︎ How I prepared to take maternity leave as an entrepreneur So what was it like having a baby during the COVID-19 pandemic? Take a listen. And share with all of your corona moms so they know they’ll be OK! Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 206: From “Accidental Artist” to Being Worn by Lupita Nyong’o: This is Melissa Mitchell, Abeille Creations Founder
Melissa Mitchell is changing the way we view art. She’s an “accidental” artist with a love for vibrant colors, unique shapes, and bold dark lines. In 2014 when the infamous snow storm hit Atlanta, Melissa took to old arts and crafts and began to create. From there, she went on social media to showcase what she was doing, and to her surprise, people expressed their interest in her pieces of art. That birthed Abeille Creations. From then, Melissa has created over 500 original art pieces, and has made her art come to life in the form of headwraps, home decor, textiles and more! She describes her experience as a “classic case of following God’s voice and never looking back,” which is so inspiring as she’s a self-taught artist. Her head wraps have graced Lupita Nyong'o in Vogue Magazine, and her work was also showcased in ESSENCE Magazine’s ‘My City, My Way.’ Melissa’s story is one that teaches us to not chase after money, but after influence. 205: From Obama Secret Service to Her Own Firm: How Holli Draines Transitioned to Entrepreneurship
An entrepreneur knows what it is to have a heart of a servant. Holli Draines had a desire to protect the vulnerable, which led to her career in law enforcement with 13 years as a secret service agent. For her, entrepreneurship came as a “blessing in disguise,” one she didn’t know she needed. In 2014, Holli lost her mother and sister, which led to a shift, not only in her personal life, but her professional life as well. This unfortunate event led her to step down from her role as an agent and become a full-time guardian to her beloved sister’s son, which she felt was her calling. Although she had left her position, people were still reaching out to her for advice and wisdom. With an impressive resume and reputable relationships, Holli was able to organically launch her own security consulting firm: Elite Strategy Global. Her services include personal security, data privacy, cybersecurity, investigation vetting, and more. Get to know more about Holli and how she fell into entrepreneurship in this episode! 204: From Her Garage to Target Shelves: How CEO Monique Rodriguez Built Mielle Organics From the Ground Up
“There’s so much more to being a boss than what’s on Instagram,” and Mielle Organics CEO Monique Rodriguez knows that all too well. Monique founded the company in 2014 after her healthy, hair care regimen for her tailbone-length hair became somewhat of a craze among her social media followers. From living out her mother’s dream of being a nurse to pushing her own aspirations to the side, Monique decided that there had to be more than living paycheck-to-paycheck. After making it to the top of her payscale in nursing with no room for growth, she knew that the entrepreneurial spirit that began in her at the age of seven had to make its debut. Combining her love for hair, science, health, and taking time to sit still and ask God for direction, Monique received a vision to create a hair product. Little by little, she began to see what’s set in motion, now, come into play. The boss lady was already talking about hair care, hair health and her own mane journey on social media, which led to creating hair mixtures, to receiving a confirmation through DM that would propel her life purpose. Listen to this amazing story, and see how her popular natural hair care line came to be, just six short years ago. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 203: How Uncharted Power Founder Jessica O. Matthews Is Bringing Energy Solutions to Underserved Populations
Jessica O. Matthews has covered every part of the side hustle sphere. She is the Founder & CEO of Uncharted Power, an award-winning, full-service power and data infrastructure company. 201: I QUIT my Job! (REWIND)
Some of you might not know that I was an MBA intern for a summer at Google when I was working towards my business degree at the University of Michigan. And usually, the summer before your second year in business school is when most people receive job offers from their temporary employer to come back after graduation and work full-time. But, plot twist, I didn’t receive an offer. That rejection, eventually, led me on the path to side hustling. I side hustled for over a year and a half until I was able to quit my full-time job, and pursue Side Hustle Pro full time. In this episode, I get honest about how I went from rejection to running my own six-figure business. Let’s rewind the tape! 195: How this Jewelry Designer Side Hustled for Over 10 Years Before Becoming An Entrepreneur (Lorraine West Jewelry)
Today in the Side Hustle Pro guest chair we welcome Lorraine West, the Founder of Lorraine West Jewelry. Lorraine developed an affinity for creating and donning unique jewelry at a young age and says she’s been an artist since she was in the 1st grade. Her mother's love for ornate pieces was the inspiration for her to delve into jewelry design while studying Illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology. After teaching herself how to manipulate various metals into beautiful original jewelry pieces, and with the increasing demand from family and friends to create custom designs, Lorraine West Jewelry was conceived. Understanding that she needed a steady income to support herself as she grew her business, she worked for 4 years as a full-time employee then another 6 years freelancing as an illustrator, as an assistant fashion and prop stylist on video shoots and through other part time gigs besides selling her own work on the side. She became a full-time entrepreneur in 2010. Lorraine met Erykah Badu, early in her career, who attended the same poetry event as her. Lorraine’s work spoke for itself and she was commissioned to make pieces for Erykah Badu, Andre 3000, Common, among many other artists. As a full-time entrepreneur, Lorraine started bringing in consistent income by selling her jewelry at the Brooklyn Flea from 2010-2014, launched her brand e-commerce website in 2015, launched the custom fine jewelry division in 2011 which grew the business exponentially since. In episode 195 of Side Hustle Pro, Lorraine shares: What led her to start selling her jewelry How she came to design custom pieces for artists like Erykah Badu, Common, and more How she side hustled before she could work on her jewelry business full-time Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher & sidehustlepro.co/lorrainewestjewelry This episode is brought to you by: Causebox Go to causebox.com/hustlepro and use the code HUSTLEPRO to get your first box for 30% off Blinkist Go to blinkist.com/hustlepro to try it FREE for 7 days AND save 25% off your new subscription. 194: Meet the Founder of Harlem’s Sugar Hill Creamery (w/ Petrushka Bazin Larsen)
Today in the Side Hustle Pro guest chair, we welcome Petrushka Bazin Larsen, the Co-Founder of Sugar Hill Creamery in Harlem, NY. Sugar Hill Creamery is Harlem's only family-owned neighborhood ice cream shop. Petrushka’s Co-Founder is her husband, Nicholas, and prior to opening the shop, she worked as Vice President for Programs & Education at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Program Director at the Laundromat Project. Even with her successful career, she had dreams of being an entrepreneur that started when she was in the 3rd grade and those dreams remained with her as she got older. The opportunity for entrepreneurship eventually presented itself when her husband unexpectedly lost his job in the culinary industry. They began thinking about how to develop a business based on foods they love, and it was an experience at a pop-up ice cream shop while on a trip in Washington, DC, that sparked the idea to open an ice shop in Harlem. Petrushka and her husband went all in and found a location, secured a loan, got permits, and opened Sugar Hill Creamery in only 10 months! 191: How Pinch of Help Founder Brittani Allen Built Her Professional Home Organization Business
Today in the guest chair we welcome Brittani Allen, a Professional Home Organizer, and CEO and Founder of Pinch of Help-Home Organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. I came across Brittani’s business on Instagram and was instantly hooked! She is passionate about creating environments her clients love living in, with her expert ability to match functional organization with aesthetically pleasing solutions. The entrepreneur bug hit her while she was studying biomedical science in graduate school and substituting teaching. It was an overheard conversation between high school students that sparked the idea for her first business, Strategic Academic Planning. She eventually pivoted to blogging but was still feeling stuck until she read the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. Would you believe that Brittani used to struggle with keeping her house clean and organized? She used the processes and tips from the book to declutter her home, and friends started to take notice. As she continued to help friends and family, she realized she could turn her side hustle into a profitable full-time business.
