Ep. 2157 Luigi Di Majo Norante of Di Majo Norante | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2157 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 165 of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Luigi Di Majo Norante of Di Majo Norante winery in the Molise region of southern Italy.
More about today’s guest:
Luigi Di Majo Norante is the Sales Manager for Di Majo Norante Wines. After completing his studies in Canada and Belgium, he honed his expertise in winemaking through valuable experience at the Famiglia Cotarella Estate. Passionate about wine culture, Luigi is committed to making wine more approachable for younger generations, bridging tradition with modern tastes. His goal is to inspire a deeper appreciation for wine, encouraging new consumers to explore its rich heritage while promoting responsible and enjoyable consumption.
Di Majo Norante is a pioneering winery located on the scenic coast of Molise, a region often described as Italy’s best-kept secret. While Molise may be one of the country’s lesser-known areas, Di Majo Norante has put it on the map for wine lovers across the world. Founded with a commitment to preserving the region’s rich viticultural heritage, the estate has been producing high-quality wines for over five generations, making it the first winery in Molise and one of the first in southern Italy to focus on qualitative wine production.
One of the winery’s key guiding principles is sustainability, not only in the vineyards but in every stage of production. Since the early 1970s, Di Majo Norante has committed itself to organic farming practices, long before it became a widespread trend. Their methods respect the natural balance of the ecosystem, using no synthetic chemicals or pesticides, and nurturing the land for future generations.
The winery's portfolio includes a wide range of wines, from elegant reds to fresh whites and sparkling varieties, each one made with precision and care. Their flagship wines, such as the rich and robust Sassius and the elegant Don Luigi Riserva, have garnered international recognition and awards, showcasing Molise’s potential as a world-class wine-producing region.

Ep. 2156 Jessica Dupuy interviews Vincent Morrow | TexSom 2024
Welcome to Episode 2156, in which Jessica Dupuy interviews Vincent Morrow live from TEXSOM 2024! Vincent is a Master Sommelier, educator and consultant wine director at PRESS Restaurant, Napa Valley.
Join us as Texas-based wine journalist Jessica Dupuy interviews top writers, journalists, sommeliers, and wine professionals at this renowned event. In this special series, Jessica will delve into the experiences and insights of key attendees, exploring career paths, challenges, and the latest trends in the wine industry.
More about today’s guest:
Vincent Morrow has earned a long list of accolades. In 2022 alone, he was named the Michelin Guide California’s Sommelier of the Year, VinePair’s Next Wave Sommelier of the Year, and the Iconoclast Dinner Experience Wine Honoree. Vincent has been shepherding the largest collection of Napa Valley wines in the world as Wine Director at PRESS Restaurant, helping the wine program earn its first Wine Spectator Grand Award in 2022. The recognition is noteworthy as PRESS is only one of two restaurants in the world to receive this distinction for a regionally focused wine list.
A soccer scholarship prompted the Phoenix native’s move to California to study at Sonoma State University. Though it wasn’t the proximity to Wine Country that drew him there, he eventually chose wine business strategies and marketing as the concentration for his degree. Vincent has demonstrated his incomparable drive as a star soccer player, avid surfer, and Muay Thai practitioner – as well as his devotion to wine study. A Master Sommelier before the age of 31, he studied for the exam while working as a sommelier at two Michelin-starred San Francisco restaurants concurrently – one-starred Gary Danko and three-starred Benu. His résumé also includes time at ONE65 in San Francisco and Chef Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry in Yountville.
Vincent’s earlier achievements include being named 2016 USA Champion in the TopSOMM Young Sommelier Competition. He entered the 2017 Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Jeunes Sommeliers Compétition, winning the USA Championship and placing 3rd overall in the world. His long-term goal, though, is to expand the diversity of the wine industry, increase access to wine education and mentorship, and to help elevate underrepresented wine professionals. As Chairperson of the Diversity Committee of the Court of Master Sommeliers, he has been a member of a leadership team that has inspired industry change both internally in the organization and externally in the wine & hospitality industries.

Ep. 2153 Michela Aru | Everybody Needs A Bit Of Scienza
Welcome to Episode 2153 of the Italian Wine Podcast and Everybody Needs a Bit of Scienza, where Professo Scienza takes questions from the international wine community and answers them in his own inimitable way! These shows are generally in the Italian language.
Today’s question about ‘localised’ food and wine pairing comes from Michela Aru.
Today’s question:
When talking about how to pair wine and food, we often refer to how it makes sense to be guided by "locality", pairing local wines with local foods. Cultural aspects play an important role, but could you explain the importance of agronomic and geographical aspects?
More about Professor Scienza:
Professor Atillio Scienza is the one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” instead of “Vermentino.” He is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!

Guests Bio - Alicia Lini
Alicia Lini represents the fourth generation of the Lini family, producers of some of Italy’s most acclaimed and highly rated sparkling wines. Since 1910, when they first established their winery in Correggio township (Reggio Emilia province, in the region of Emilia-Romagna), they have never followed the trends or fashions that have driven Lambrusco production in this century and the last. They make their Lambrusco — including their classic method Lambrusco, produced using traditional hand-riddling — the same way they always have: The traditional “dry” style of Lambrusco, with a focus on freshness, brilliant fruit flavors, and food-friendliness. They ascribe their success to their vision of what Lambrusco is and should be.

Ep. 2150 Matteo Ascheri of Cantine Ascheri | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2150 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 164 of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Matteo Ascheri of Cantine Ascheri, a winery and hospitality complex in Piemonte, in northwest Italy.
More about today’s winery:
The Ascheri winery was originally established in La Morra at the dawn of the 19th century. It was there, where today there still exists a place called "Ascheri", that the first vines were planted and the first wines produced. In those years, the most important town for the production of Barolo, the best known wine of this area, was Bra, due to its good connections with Turin. Because of this, in 1880 the cellars were moved from La Morra to Bra, where they are still located today. They are the only remaining cellars which can boast this beautiful and ancient heritage. To the La Morra vineyards were added the vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Bra, with the philosophy that only the maximum respect for their management can create great wines. In the winery, the aim is to obtain a wine which is the expression of the vineyard it comes from, of the grapes it is made from, and, above all, of the ideas of the winemaker. Alongside the winery is the Osteria Murivecchi and the hotel Albergo Cantine Ascheri.

Ep. 2138 What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 2138, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. Today’s episode is entitled “What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market” and is led by Mirella Menglide.
Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and is pleased to present this series of market-focus sessions, recorded in Verona in November 2023.
wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide.
About the session:
While the US was a booming market for wines during the pandemic years and Italian wines reached a peak in 2022, overall wine consumption slowed for the second year in a row. Mirella Menglide will discuss how imported wines, faced with a barrage of federal and state government regulations, must find a way to appeal to a new, younger generation of consumers who seem to be increasingly less interested in drinking wine.
About the host:
Mirella Menglide holds a master’s degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from the University of Bucharest. Fluent in 5 languages, she translated a novel into Italian for the University for Foreigners in Perugia and has contributed to various publications. She also attended a course on International Business Administration at the University of Gothenburg. After working in public relations at a Swedish company, she joined the New York office of the Italian Trade Commission as part of the food & wine sector. At present, she is the Senior Trade Analyst of the sector, in charge of advising Italian companies on US legislation, helping organize promotional and educational activities such as seminars and guided tastings, and participating in trade shows alongside wine and food professionals and press representatives from both Italy and the US. Mirella has been instrumental in ensuring and maintaining the relationships between American and Italian food and wine companies, which aims to result in a broader knowledge, appreciation and, ultimately, presence of Italian products in the US. When not helping Italian companies find a counterpart in the US, Mirella enjoys reading and writing, art, music, traveling, cooking and, of course, drinking wine.

Ep. 2137 Wim Sas interviews Giovanni Fiorentino | Clubhouse Ambassadors’ Corner
Welcome to Episode 2137 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Wim Sas interviews Giovanni Fiorentino, of the Fiorentino winery in the small rural village of Paternopoli, in the center of the Taurasi area, in Irpinia.
Today’s learning objectives:
I hope this interview can set a different view on Aglianico and Taurasi. I’m always surprised how ‘unknown’ these wines are beside the well known producers like Mastroberardino, Feudo di San Gregorio or Terredora. You know, once you have a well-aged Taurasi in your glass, you know exactly what I’m talking about!
Co-Moderator - Wim Sas
Wim Sas, the founder of Wijnkennis in Lille, Belgium, is a renowned wine expert with over 30 years of experience. He recently earned the prestigious title of Italian Wine Ambassador from the Vinitaly International Academy in Verona, a recognition achieved by only a few worldwide. His deep knowledge of Italian wines, including varieties, production methods, terroir, and history, sets him apart in the wine industry. Besides being an importer, he is dedicated to wine writing, wine education, teaching courses for aspiring sommeliers and wine enthusiasts. Guest Bio - Giovanni Fiorentino
Giovanni Fiorentino was born fifty-seven years ago in Paternopoli, a small rural town in the heart of Irpinia, Campania region. He graduated in law and worked as a consultant for the public administration. His parents were farmers and his mother Margherita, in particular, always made wine at home, while his father was forced to emigrate to the United States. Giovanni always used to help his mother in the production of ‘Aglianico’ and ‘Coda di Volpe’ wines, which was sold in demijohns. In 2012, Giovanni quit his job and built a new bio-architectural winery next to the house where he was born. He continued to cultivate the family vineyards, about 5 hectares - 4 hectares of Aglianico and 1 hectare of Coda di Volpe. He bottled for the first time in 2016: now, he produces about 20 thousands bottles each year. His goal is to make wines that tell the story of his family and his land: a gentle and elegant wine that respects the vintages and roots, the terroir without neglecting good drinkability.

Ep. 2133 Sicilia DOC with Antonio Rallo | On The Road With Stevie Kim
Welcome to Episode 2133 of On The Road Edition. Today Stevie Kim is in Sicily to talk about Sicilia DOC with Antonio Rallo, president of the Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia.
More about today’s guest:
The controlled designation of origin for Sicilian wines was established on 22nd November 2011 by a decree issued by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. On 12th June 2012, the same wine growers, winemakers and bottling companies that supported recognition of the DOC, established the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia with the aim of promoting the production of Sicilian wine and its area of production.
The consortium boasts about 3,000 wine growers amongst its members and, thanks to this high level of representation, it has been attributed erga omnes status by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. The consortium’s role therefore lies in the protection, promotion, development, provision of consumer information and general supervision of all matters related to Sicilia DOC wines.

Guest Bio - Sebastian Van de Sype
With a master’s degree in aerospace engineering and a +10 year career in business and F1 engineering, Sebastian is not the typical winemaker that was born into it. It was a conscious choice to embark full-time on this project, together with his spouse, Mary, who is a midwife.
The winery started in late 2020, acquiring an organic vineyard in Emilia in the hills around Modena, in Castelvetro, and also making the first vintage. Since then, the winery evolved and recently they inaugurated their own production site.
Before starting the winery, Sebastian had been working in the region for two F1 teams and fell in love with the region and its gastronomic opportunities. The Lambrusco wine style was inspiring, especially in terms of growing potential. The spark that ignited the project most probably can be found in his childhood, growing up in a culinary oriented family with the creed “taste thoroughly and choose quality over quantity!”. The continuous search for beauty and quality was in fact an important cornerstone of his education, whether it was in music, sports, study or any other occupation.

Se doveste scegliere la zona per un nuovo vigneto, quale analisi del terreno svolgerebbe e come sceglierebbe i vitigni più appropriati? In particolare rimanendo in ambito regionale con uve locali.

Ep. 2123 Chefs and Wine with Gurvinder Bhatia and Gino Colangelo | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 2123, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. Today’s episode is entitled “Chefs and Wine: A complicated relationship” and features Gurvinder Bhatia and Gino Colangelo.
This session explores the importance of a chef’s relationship with wine, through the eyes of professionals in the restaurant sector as well as consumers. Is it necessary for a great chef to also be well educated in wine? Should chefs and sommeliers work together to create menus, or is the food the chef’s primary focus and the wine should be left to the somms and the consumers? Based upon the results of a survey conducted earlier this year, we reveal the opinions of a wide variety of wine professionals, discussing everything from how do diners choose a restaurant and is the wine list important to that choice, all the way to how extensive and diverse restaurant wine lists should be.
About the hosts:
Gino Colangelo is the founder and president of Colangelo & Partners, the leading wine-focused PR & communications agency in the US with domestic clients as well as clients from around the globe. Gino’s particular interest and focus is Italian wine. He and his team work with both private companies (Arnaldo Caprai, Frescobaldi, Ornellaia, Pasqua and many others) and consortia and other trade groups (Chianti Classico, Langhe Prosecco DOC, Sicilia DOC, Slow Wine and many more). His agency has created award-winning campaigns and helps companies, big and small, navigate the complex US market.
Gurvinder Bhatia is the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Quench Magazine - North America’s longest-running and Canada’s most widely distributed wine and food publication. Although he has written for Quench for over two decades and been on the editorial team for the past 15 years, Gurvinder purchased the magazine in 2021 and is committed to the magazine’s evolution to be a much truer representation of our society. Gurvinder is also the wine columnist for Global Television Edmonton, an international wine judge and the president of Vinomania Consulting.

Ep. 2120 Roberta Testa of Tenuta degli Angeli | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2120 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 160 of Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Roberta Testa of Tenuta degli Angeli, a winery founded in 1984 in the locality of S.Stefano degli Angeli in Carobbio degli Angeli in the province of Bergamo in the northern Italian region of Lombardy.
The winery was awarded Best Sparkling Wine for Vsq Brut Metodo Classico Degli Angeli 2018 at 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024.
More about today’s guest:
The Tenuta degli Angeli agricultural company was founded in 1984 in the locality of S.Stefano degli Angeli in Carobbio degli Angeli: a "favor" vineyard as Pierangelo Testa, creator of this small and wonderful oasis, had defined it. The 350 meters of altitude, the soil composed of calcareous marl and clay, an ideal microclimate for wine production and careful care are the filters from which constant wines full of territoriality emerge, the pride of the Testa family, who, harvest after harvest, they renew the challenge that lies silent in this small strip of land. Added to this is that unmistakable feminine touch and attention to detail that Mrs. Manuela and her daughters have been able to instill in every corner of the company.
Today on the elite hill there is a "bonbonniere" vineyard: small in size and full of promises, kept harvest after harvest. The plants, chosen according to the characteristics of the soil, climate and microclimate; the appropriate breeding methodology and the suffrage of the Grand Designer who only signs the best, have made Pierangelo's dream come true, changing the hobby into a convinced passion. Passed on with equal fervor to the kind, dynamic wife Mrs. Manuela, to her daughters Laura, Roberta and Maria and Francesco, the only son.
