Ep. 2064 Nino Falcone, Montalbera | On The Road With Stevie Kim
Welcome to Episode 2064 of On The Road Special Edition. Stevie Kim takes a deep dive into the wine region of Piemonte. Today, she interviews Nino Falcone of Montalbera winery
Discover the history of the ancient estate where the winery is located, the development of this extraordinary family winery, and the winemaking techniques involved in producing its famous wines
More about today’s guest:
In the mid-1980s, the Morando family began expanding their property by purchasing land in adjacent territories and planting it with new grapevines, prevalently Ruchè; they continue to grow their landholdings. Today, a continuous stretch of vineyard-covered land encircles the winery. The vineyards are planted entirely on hillsides, giving the vines different expositions and soil, from clay to limestone.
Rigor and planning. Interpretation and terroir. These are the basis for Montalbera’s productive philosophy. They are ideals that put the fruit of the wine at the center of everything, and in doing so exalt the uniqueness of the vineyards. Each wine is interpreted in different ways, from stainless steel to wood, from overripe to withering, in order to best develop the multifaceted personality of each variety.

Ep. 2063 Yvonne Zohar part 1 of 2 | Everybody Needs A Bit Of Scienza
Welcome to Episode 2063, where Prof. Scienza takes questions from the wine community and answers them in his inimitable way! These shows are generally in the Italian language. Today’s question comes from Yvonne Zohar part 1 of 2
Today’s questions:
Question 1 - I often go to Crete (we are developing a hospitality project there) where I talk with winemakers and archaeologists. As you know Cretans/ Minoans were the seafarers of the ancient world, trading pottery and wine for materials they needed, such as metals. In Greece they date the contacts between Italy much earlier than your research shows. How do you explain the difference?
Question 2 - On the north of Greece, in the Pangeon mountains, an unidentified red variety was discovered. After years of research and DNA testing, it turned out to be an old Greek variety, non-identical to any greek or foreign grape. Did something similar occur in Italy, are there any unidentified grapes in Italy?
If you want to learn more about the Professor:
The one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” in place of “Vermentino.” Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!

Great friends/teachers have helped him in his path of prfessional growth, from Attilio Sceinza to Donato Lanati, from Vittorio Fiore to Nicola Tucci.
He approached in organic agriculture since 2011 when it was not so popular in northern Italy. A very important step has been in 2013, when the first georgian amphora (Kvèvri) arrived in the winery and Vittorio started to apply long skin macerations to albana mosts (at the beginning almost as a joke, and now also as a real business). The maceration of the indigenous white variety of the Romagna region is now his great passion. Vittorio loves white wines.
Vittorio’ss keywords are curiosity, hard work and the example of parents, all seasoned by the joy of those who work not only for the gain and a healthy self-irony typical of the people of Romagna

Ep. 2052 Why you should clone your marketing manager | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 2052, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into- Why you should clone your marketing manager. Five actions to reorganize the department in the company with Michele Bertuzzo
Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023.
wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide.
About the session:
Posting on social, maintaining press relations, organizing visits, updating the website, coordinating graphics. Caught up in a thousand commitments, the marketing manager often forgets the most important thing: having a strategic brand vision.
In the last 15 years, communication - in general, not just wine communication - has experienced an explosion in the number of channels. Different social media have appeared (in the beginning it was Facebook…), blogs, portals, and platforms have proliferated. Youtubers and influencers have flourished. Guides, sommelier associations, competitions, and fairs have divided and multiplied.
But the old media have not died out. On the contrary, they have been enhanced. Today, a journalist receives many more press releases and invitations to events than he did just five years ago. This whole rush has produced one result: there is no more time to think. There is no longer the energy to inject creativity into the work and differentiate one’s communication from that of competitors. To overcome the impasse, we have to go back to the fundamentals and start over: understand our brand positioning, define competitors, identify and know our audience. Only a good strategic foundation allows creativity to fly high and implement original, attractive, memorable, but always consistent actions. Even with small budgets.
This session will examine how the marketing manager of a winery (large, medium, or small) can structure an original and effective strategy through five simple moves. Without resorting to cloning.

Ep. 2044 Gerardo Vernazzaro, Cantine Astroni | On The Road With Stevie Kim
Welcome to Episode 2044 of On The Road Special Edition. Stevie Kim takes a deep dive into the wine region of Campi Flegrei. Today, she interviews Gerardo Vernazzaro of Cantine Astroni
More about today’s winery:
The ASTRONI WINERY was born in Phlegrean Fields.
The winery is located on the outer slopes of the Astroni crater between Naples and Pozzuoli. Once the private hunting grounds for the Bourbons, today it is a State Nature Reserve managed by WWF Italy.
In this corner of a unique land kissed by the sea, inspired by the volcanic fire, and embraced by myths, the ASTRONI WINERY is committed to safeguard, enhance and promote the great enoic heritage handed down by our ancestors. Thanks to a visceral relationship with the land and the support of key enological innovations, the winery produces wines that are able to recount the territory from which they originate in every glass. The focus is mainly on pre phylloxera native vines (ungrafted): Campi Flegrei dop Falanghina and Piedirosso.
Today Astroni Winery’s commitment is increasingly directed towards disseminating and promoting the work, tradition and culture of the territory and man. Over the last several years, the winery has also launched a project to promote the area through art, communication and education.

Ep. 2042 When being collective leads to uniqueness | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 2042, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into- When being collective leads to uniqueness: Branding Territory and Terroir Branding with Nathalie Spielmann, Robert Camuto
Terroir branding - distinct from country-of-origin effects and place branding - explains how and why some regions are better known than others. Indeed, when local firms can develop global brands while being engaged in responsible actions to protect their valuable resources, the value of their territorial brand soars. Champagne is an excellent example.
This session will discuss how to identify key facets that make terroir brands unique, how they can work collectively using cooperative postures, the role of moral engagement, and the hazards that prevent value creation. In the ever-globalized marketplace, distinctiveness is a key performance indicator and efficient terroir branding is a critical strategic approach helping regions and wine brands gain notoriety and rise above the competitive clutter.

Ep. 2039 Salvatore Avallone, Villa Matilde | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2039 of the Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he is interviewing Salvatore Avallone of Villa Matilde
More about today’s winery:
In the 1960s, Francesco Paolo Avallone, a lawyer with a personal passion for ancient wines, read about 'Falernum' wine by ancient Roman politician Plinius and the ancient Roman poets Vergilius and Marziale. Intrigued by the Horace's poems, he decided to revive the legendary wine that disappeared at the beginning of the last century. Believing in the potential of this land, he started viticulture to revive the high quality wines of 2000 years ago and founded Villa Matilde, then "Villa Matilde Avallone".
The characteristics of ancient Falerno wines: rich, powerful and fiery. The most famous wine in classical literature came back to life in the 1970s in the vineyards of Villa Matilde, which stretches across the hills on the slopes of Mount Roccamonfina.
Today, the winery has been taken over by Francesco Paolo's son Salvatore and daughter Maria-Ida: a new chapter in which Villa Matilde, born from the land of Falerno, tells the identity of Campania, a rich land called "Campania Felix" in ancient Rome.

But it was in Almaty that this passion transformed into a profession. Unable to continue working as a doctor legally in Kazakhstan, he took a job as a waiter, like many others, to earn a living. Driven by a desire for further development, he met his future wine mentor, Artem Lebedev, who ignited his love for Italy and its wines. His trained mind, memory, and perseverance allowed him to achieve remarkable results in a short time. In just four months, he became a Vinitaly Maestro, and now he is preparing for the next stage—becoming an ambassador.

Alessandro 2020 met his wife Loredana, in 2022 they decided to invest in a territory they love so much ETNA. A small vineyard planted in 1960 on the North side of volcano Etna at about 680 meters above sea level.
The little village is Rovittello, a suburb of Castiglione di Sicilia, exactly in Contrada Dafara Galluzzo.
The area is unique for the volcanic soil, rich in minerals, such as potassium, iron, and magnesium. The historic vineyard comprises Nerello Mascalese grapes, grown as a sapling on chestnut poles. There we can find other white grape varieties, such as Minella and Carricante, or red grapes such as Minella nera, this is because in ancient times were planted more cultivar.
The first vintage was 2022 with 1600 bottles of Etna Rosato f grapes and 700 bottles of Etna Rosso.

Ep. 2022 Annette Mueller Fattoria La Vialla | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2022 of the Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he is interviewing Annette Mueller of Fattoria La Vialla di Gianni, Antonio e Bandino Lo Franco
The winery is awarded the Best Winery Wine Without Walls Best Organic Sparkling Wine 2024 Trophy for Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico Docg Extra Brut Millesimato Vino Biologico Cuvée n° 2 2016, and Best Biodynamic Sweet Wine 2024 Trophy for Vin Santo Del Chianti Doc Occhio Di Pernice Riserva Vino Biologico 2015 in Wine Without Walls, a section of 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024
More about today’s winery:
„Metti bòn, cava bòn!“ ( Put good in, get good out)
Since 1978, the Lo Franco family has lived by this motto at Fattoria La Vialla, their organic-biodynamic farm in Tuscany... and this commitment has been rewarded!
For the family-run, independent and almost self-sufficient farm, the early years were difficult; it was often ignored or “snubbed” by tasting panels, but now, more than 46 years later, the Lo Franco Family has been named “Wine Family of the Year” at the Meininger
Award 2023 – Excellence in Wine & Spirit.
In addition, in 2023, Fattoria La Vialla was named “Best Organic Winery - International” for the 9th time at the Mundus Vini Biofach, “Winery of the Year” for the 5th time at Wine Without Walls - Vinitaly , and “Best Producer Organic - Italy” for the 12th time at the Berlin Wine Trophy.
That all this is no coincidence is also shown by the numerous other accolades received in recent years, thanks to the untiring commitment of La Vialla’s over 150 employees who work in the vineyards, olive groves, fields,kitchen-workshop, bakery, dairy and hospitality structure.
Fattoria La Vialla is a totally eco-sustainable, “climate positive” farm and wine estate.
In 2020 the Fattoria was promoted from “Carbon Neutral” to “Climate Positive” by Nature Office.
In 2022 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), together with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) chose Fattoria La Vialla as one of the
#GenerationRestoration actors for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The Programme aims to create a global movement to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems, in which sustainable and regenerative agriculture
plays a key role.
On November 23rd 2023 Fattoria La Vialla won the German Sustainability Award 2024 as an outstanding model of sustainability in agriculture. The award is conferred annually by
the Foundation of the same name and the German government.
