Money is tight, and running an Etsy business does require coinage as they said back in the 80s.  With that being said there are things you can do to run your business lean so you can squeeze out as much profit as possible. Here are the top tips I cover in this week's podcast: Keep inventory low.  Handmade sellers should have little or no inventory until they know what sells. Vintage sellers need more inventory but make sure you're buying what is selling.  Use eBay for comps. Do not buy postage at the post office or UPS.  Use etsy or third-party shippers such as pirate ship. Buy packaging in bulk online, not locally.  Amazon or supplyhut.com are good places to start.  Use a thermal printer.  It's a bigger cost up front but there will be tons of savings long term. Do everything yourself, and outsource later.  If you outsource from the onset you’ll always have to rely on someone else. Don’t run ads… right away. Use your smartphone and not a fancy camera. Making money online, specifically on Etsy may seem easy or at least that’s how it’s often presented.  Just like how it may be presented as easy to own a mansion, Ferrari, or spend every day on the beach collecting passive income… I’ve been around the Etsy game for a long time.  I've been selling since 2014 to be exact.  I’ve been around the commerce game even longer, since 2000… So I’ve learned a few things along the way.. or at least I’d like to think so. That’s what I want to talk about today so I can help you with this deceivingly complicated decision. How do you determine what to sell?  Do you have a strategy to help you find and create products for your niche that will be successful? Today I want to throw you a lifeline and give you the 3 step process I use to find products to sell in my niche that will have the BEST chances of success.  Step 1:  There are 3 types of products you should be focusing on.  They are new (to your shop), seasonal/holiday, or similar.  Decide what type of product you want to sell or at least have a few keywords in mind or subject matter in mind.  Preferably have at least 3 ideas.  Step 2:  Do product/keyword research.  Use the Etsy search bar or Alura.  Alura will give you valuable sold stats and more information than the search bar.   Step 3:  Pick the idea that is performing the best according to sales/search volume.  Create the product and get it listed.  Doing these steps will give you the BEST chance that your new product will sell.

I'm back with some more Etsy news for ya!  Here's what's covered in this week's episode: Etsy CEO Josh Silverman announced new fall tv ad campaigns expected to start in November.  Etsy is redesigning the seller handbook with a new homepage coming in the next few weeks.  Their goal is to make it easier to find information and make it more concise.   Etsy also launched a virtual holiday selling event called Etsyup where they talk about trends, marketing, and search.  You can view this video and the announcement from CEO Josh Silverman on www.etsyup.com  Alura, my favorite Etsy tool, just launched a brand new email sender tool!  It's a fantastic out of the box solution for those leary or unfamiliar with email marketing.  Get your free trial here

Like any e-commerce platform, Etsy restricts what you can and cannot sell.  It's important to know what these restrictions are so you don't get your listings taken down or even worse your shop suspended/closed.   Some of what is restricted may be obvious such as trademarked items or guns.  But I really wanted to do this episode to talk about the things that are less obvious.  These are the items that you have to be careful of accidentally selling.  And unfortunately, the excuse of not knowing won't help your case if your shop gets closed because you're selling a restricted item.   Black Friday is coming... Welcome to an all-new episode of Etsy Seller News! Here's what's covered in this episode:    USPS holiday price increases Oct 5th through the week after Christmas and then back up in the middle of January.  The cost depends on weight and distance. Also, they're getting rid of 15K jobs but they'll still be able to handle shipping with no delays…   Etsy updates feed:   Etsy released a statement last week explaining the importance and how the updates feed works for buyers so sellers can take advantage.    The “Etsy Updates feed” notifies shoppers of updates to sellers with whom they’ve interacted (through either favoriting one of their items or by following their shop).   Etsy wrote: “While the Updates feed isn’t a new feature, we’ve spent the last year making improvements to make it easier for buyers to get notified about your shop and encourage them to revisit your items and make a purchase. In fact, we’ve seen that the Updates feature can help bring buyers back to shop from you again!”   In order to appear in the feed, sellers can do one of several things: * Run a sale * Send a coupon * Add new items * Restock items   Visitors to Etsy can view their Updates feed by clicking on the bell icon in the navigation bar – if there are new notifications, it will display a number next to the icon to draw attention to it   Bad buyers?  eBay is implementing a predictive approach to help find and eliminate bad buyers. eBay will also use third-party vendors to identify shoppers who are engaging in bad buying behavior on platforms outside of eBay. Bednowitz described three types of “bad buyer” behavior: 1) The buyer files a false SNAD claim (the buyer files a not-as-described claim when in fact it’s a remorse return). 2) The buyer returns a used or damaged item. 3) The buyer returns an empty box or a different item.   Will Etsy do something similar down the road?  I hope so...   Killin’ It: This shop has 145k sales, which equates to  2.85 million in sales! https://www.etsy.com/shop/EcoEngrave
