260 Your Salon Team Can Win GOLD Too!
Every four years, the Olympics and the Paralympics come along. And even if you’re not someone who is usually that fussed by athletics, swimming, gymnastics, etc., you just can’t help but be exposed to it, whether it’s on Social media, the news or on TV, it’s everywhere! And if you’re like most people, you can’t help but be impressed with what those incredible athletes are capable of. But what we see is the ‘end results’ after years of commitment and dedication. So what's that got to do with hairdressing? On the surface, it has nothing to do with hairdressing. But I can’t help thinking about the parallels that there are about ‘being the best’ at whatever it is that you do.In today’s episode, I talk about how being good at anything in life requires you to make finer distinctions about whatever it is that you want to master. It requires training, it requires huge levels of commitment and determination, and it requires sacrifice in other areas of your life in order to achieve the goal whatever it is. 258 Take Control of Your Salon Finances Now!
We all have a money story. An event or series of events in our young lives that shape how we see money, how we value money and how either we learn to master money, or it masters you. Inevitably your ‘money story’ will largely be influenced by your parents and your exposure to their habits and thoughts around money. But as a business owner the money story you have from your upbringing and the thoughts and habits you have developed may not serve you well in business. In business, you need to learn to master money, or it will master you. That doesn’t mean that you have to become an accountant or bookkeeper. But it does mean that you need to learn to manage the money that flows through your business so that you can build a profitable business and create the lifestyle that you want for yourself and your family. In today's episode we discuss: ● Why not everyone should be self-employed.● What your accountant’s job is.● Why financial management is your responsibility. 242 Is a Salon Partnership a Good Idea?
Recently I was asked by a young hairdresser whether or not I thought he should go into partnership with a friend and open a salon together. Partnerships are one of the many subjects we cover in the online management course that is currently open for enrolment, but I think it’s a great question and will make a good podcast topic as well. Unfortunately, partnerships in small businesses don’t have a high success rate. In today's episode, I will cover some of the key elements that need to be put in place to give a partnership the best possible chance of success. In this Episode:[00:01:13] Introducing the topic of partnerships in the salon business and the importance of setting them up correctly.[00:01:56] Addressing the Reality of Partnership Endings[00:04:20] The importance of partners discussing potential challenges preemptively.[00:05:57] A list of the twelve potential challenges partnerships may face.[00:12:43] Advice for fostering successful partnerships, including open communication and mutual respect. 240 What are the 3 Biggest Challenges that Many Salon Owners Face? with Antony Whitaker
As a salon owner you will have many responsibilities, but they can all be summarised by saying that; “You are the person that is ultimately responsible for the success of your business".And that takes more than just being good at doing hair, having a great location, and a column of your own clients… Obviously, those things are important, and they will help you get ‘out of the gate’ so to speak, but in reality - they are just the beginning. In my experience, the 3 biggest challenges, that most salon owners face will be: 1. The business is dependent on them doing the majority of the work.2. There will be a degree of chaos, or a lack of organisation.3. ‘The culture’ that is developing within the business. For full show notes, links and resources mentioned visit: https://growmysalonbusiness.com/podcast/240/ Thanks so much for joining me this week. 228 Celebrating Angus Mitchell: Life, Love, and Legacy in the Hair Industry
2024 started off on a very sad note for the hairdressing world with the passing of Angus Mitchell. Angus was the son of the late Paul Mitchell, who was the co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems. As someone who had the privilege of having a close working relationship with the company, I was fortunate enough to ‘on occasion’ have spent a little time with Angus, and he was always full of life, love, and genuine kindness. This week's podcast is a re-release of episode 46, which I originally recorded in 2020. I’m re-releasing it as a tribute and thank you to Mr Angus Mitchell. He will long be missed and loved by many. In this episode, we discuss ● Why Hawaii is the spiritual home for John Paul Mitchell Systems.● The early days of the Paul Mitchell company● The importance of philanthropy and environmental issues. 227 Profit: Understanding it and Making More of it in the Salon Industry.
In today’s episode, we’re going to focus on one of the most misunderstood concepts among salon industry professionals: the ‘P’ word (i.e. PROFIT). Reliable data in the salon industry is often hard to come by. But, what is usually agreed on is that when it comes to profit margins, the average salon has a net profit margin of somewhere between 0-8%. The good news is that with a little bit of education and thoughtful strategising, that is something we can change! So, if you’re unsure what exactly gross, net, and operating profit are, why you need to make a profit, or how to make your business more profitable, you’ve come to the right place! 222 The Changing World of Online Hairdressing Education with Johnny Othona
The last few years have seen a change in how hairdressers and salon owners access and present education. Over the past few months, I’ve interviewed several industry educators who have embraced the online space and today I’m going to be speaking with another; Johnny Othona, the co-founder of Ena, Allilon, and Allilon Plus. In today’s podcast, we will discuss: - The philosophies that underpin everything Johnny does as an educator - The concept of suitability and whether you can “teach feeling” - How online education is evolving… And lots more! The Sassoon brand will be celebrating its 70th birthday next year, and it is as relevant as ever before. The result is House of Sassoon, a concept that combines different salon models, hair education, ambassador programs, and more under one roof in arguably the coolest part of London. On this week’s episode, I speak with Sassoon CEO Debbie Webster about the launch of House of Sassoon and how it has breathed new life into the business.
