Education
Mark Taylor
Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future. While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced. Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you. ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’

072: The PE Umbrella with Ryan Ellis

072: The PE Umbrella with Ryan Ellis

Todays guest is Ryan Ellis from The PE Umbrella Podcast Ryan is a primary school teacher and provides P.E teacher training in the UK. His experience also includes football coaching in the USA and he is the founder of The PE Umbrella Podcast. The 4 Umbrellas make up the backbone of what The PE Umbrella represents and stands for. The Blue Umbrella – Physical Domain The Green Umbrella – Cognitive (thinking) Domain The Red Umbrella – Social Domain The Purple Umbrella – Affective (emotional) Domain “…It was in one of my early interviews with Bob Knipe that we hit on the topic of WHY I chose the name ‘The PE Umbrella’ for my podcast. My response was simply that PE covers so many aspects of life and skills, it was an Umbrella term for many things. Bob went one better than me. He suggested that he had imagined the term as a metaphor. An Umbrella that children, and later adults would carry with them through their lives, containing skills and knowledge that protect them from the world around them and situations they may find themselves in, as a real umbrella shelters an individual from the rain. Later, while mulling over this concept, I took it one step further, and instead of an umbrella that simply protects them, it is one they always add skills to, and can choose when to use these skills to tackle the world around them head on! And so the 4 umbrellas was born. Each Umbrella representing one of the four domains of learning. I see Physical Education as being at the forefront of the education & development of all children. The Physical has never been/nor should ever be in my eyes the sole focus of a great Physical Education program. Lessons can and should use purposeful questioning that enables the children to reflect on WHAT they are doing, WHY they are doing it and HOW they will know they have achieved it. Almost every activity has the potential to explore all 4 of these Umbrellas, and the resources at the PE Umbrella explain just how the same activity can lend itself to learning in any of the four domains, whether you choose to focus solely on one or touch upon a number of them, well, thats entirely up to you. After-all, YOU are the teacher and YOU know your students the best!” Contact Details www.peumbrella.com <a...

070: Viking History with Noah Tetzner

070: Viking History with Noah Tetzner

Viking history is a passion for my guest Noah Tetzner. His podcast is called The History of Vikings and he interviews some of the worlds leading academics on the subject. We talk about: How he got into podcasting at just 17 years of age. New ways of learning in the digital age through mediums like podcasts & YouTube. His experiences of being inspired by teachers passionate about history. How to focus on your passions while studying all subjects in the curriculum. Homeschooling Noah describes his show: The Vikings were a truly legendary people. For nearly 300 years they ruled the waves of the Northern Seas and raided peaceful monasteries and towns along the coasts of England, Ireland, Scotland and France. As raiders the Vikings had an infamous and beastly reputation. Pillaging, burning, and killing whatever lay in their path. They would stop at nothing to appease their desire for wealth and glory. But apart from being excellent at raiding, the Vikings established a trading network that stretched from Finland to Newfoundland, successfully besieged the greatest, most heavily defended city in the world, discovered North America, and revolutionized the way that we build ships. Not to mention the vibrant myths and sagas they told that are still capable of inspiring us today. The history of Vikings is a rich one, and I hope you’ll join me in rediscovering it! www.The HistoryOfVikings.com The History of Vikings – YouTube

068: How to support children’s learning with Your Parenting Mojo

Jen Lumanlan is the creator and host of the podcast Your Parenting Mojo. When she became a new parent she started searching for information on the best ways to raise a child. This research led to a Master’s degree in Psychology followed by another in Education. Her passion for learning and a desire to share her findings with others led to the launch of Your Parenting Mojo and two courses. One focused on whether to homeschool your child and the other on how to support your child if you choose public school. 1. Research, analysis, and insights to help you decide whether homeschooling is right for you. 2. Want to support your child’s learning in school? Do you want to improve your child’s social, emotional, and academic capabilities to enable school success and a life-long love of learning? Find out more at yourparentingmojo.com Myself and Peter Cansell were interviewed as part of Jen’s research and creation of ‘Want to support your child’s learning in school?’ We had a wonderful conversation about our experience as both parents and educators. This is available to those who enrol in the course. Here is some information from Jen’s website Are you worried about your child starting school? Or has he/she started school and things aren’t going as well as you’d like? This course is for you if: Your child can’t sit still for more than five minutes in a row and you worry that will make him seem disruptive; You’ve taught your child how to count but have no idea where to start teaching anything else related to math; You have a personal goal of developing a lifelong love of learning in your child; You’ve heard that participating in your child’s learning is a key factor in children’s academic success, but you aren’t sure which are the most effective ways of participating; You’d like to move beyond the pretty Pinterest boards and printable worksheets you see online to create extracurricular activities that extend your child’s interests, expand the ways in which they learn and express their learning, and are really fun! I give you the tools and guidance you need to smooth the transition to school and set your child up for success – all in a way that is driven by the child’s interests and provides reassurance – not stress! – for parents. I hope this helps all of those looking for research based insights from someone who really wants to help you. 066: Re-humanising primary education with Dr. Tony Eaude

066: Re-humanising primary education with Dr. Tony Eaude

On 19th April 2018 Dr. Tony Eaude gave the Christian Schiller lecture for the National Association for Primary Education at the University of Greenwich. Guest speakers at the annual lectures use the work of Christian Schiller as inspiration for their insights and thoughts about education. Dr. Tony Eaude was a primary class teacher for thirteen years and headteacher of a multicultural first school in Oxford for nine. He then studied for a doctorate and has worked since 2003 as independent research consultant. He has written widely in areas such as spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, values, pedagogy and expertise in relation to young children and their teachers. Details of Dr. Tony Eaude’s work can be seen on www.edperspectives.org.uk and the the text of the 2018 Christian Schiller lecture can be found on http://www.edperspectives.org.uk/page.cfm?pageid=edp-home A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF CHRISTIAN SCHILLER from the NAPE website CHRISTIAN SCHILLER CBE, MC, MA Christian Schiller was born on the 20th September 1895. He went to a prep school and then to Gresham’s School where he was head boy. Military service in the First World War followed and he was wounded in action. After the war he read mathematics at Cambridge and then studied with Percy Nunn at the London Day Training College before beginning his teaching career. In 1924 he was appointed HMI and then followed a long period of work with the schools in Liverpool where his contact with poor children and their families was a deeply formative experience. He became District Inspector and later filled this role in Worcestershire. In 1946 he became Staff Inspector for Primary Education and his influence, often in partnership with his friend Robin Tanner, HMI and etcher, was strongly felt as elementary schools developed into primary schools with a distinctive child centred approach which drew on children’s innate creativity and which recognised the powerful learning which comes from direct experience. On his retirement in 1955 he began a new career as he created a one year course at the University of London Institute of Education for teachers and heads seconded from their schools. Each course was kept small, no more than 12 people who spent their year visiting schools and in discussion led by Schiller who often remained largely silent until he revealed his vision and optimism about the future in a brief summing up. There were no examinations or required coursework yet, as this writer will testify, everyone worked extremely hard. The course was hugely influential and most of his former students have gone on to hold senior leadership positions in education. Christian Schiller died on the 11th February 1976. The following year the first memorial lecture was presented in London and the annual lectures, now organised by the National Association for Primary Education, continue to the present day. We are pleased to be able to celebrate the work of this great man who contributed so much to the principles and practice of primary

064: How to create a school with less testing, less planning & verbal feedback

Flora Barton is Headteacher at Crowmarsh Gifford CE Primary School. We discuss how they are supporting their pupils to become independent learners, while creating a working environment for the teaching team to thrive, inspire and be creative. Less testing changes the focus of how teachers teach and as you will hear the results are remarkable. They are doing this by: Purple learning for the pupils Increasing educational visit More learning outside of the classroom No formal observations Verbal feedback 2 days a week staff should leave school at 4.15 with nothing in their hands Focus on wellbeing Less Planning No non-statutory testing Growth mindset Being part of the community Broad curriculum “Learning and leadership are central to the ethos of our school, where both adults and children not only always give their very best but go above and beyond what is expected. We work hard to ensure that the curriculum is exciting and stimulating, where children can utilise all of their talents and inquire about the wider world around them. 052: Live classical music in schools with Apollo Music Projects

052: Live classical music in schools with Apollo Music Projects

Apollo Music Projects brings live classical music to children who might not otherwise experience it. Over 13 years, more than 8,600 children have experienced the magic of live performance from classroom to concert hall, culminating in the thrilling spectacle of a full orchestra in concert. I talk to David Chernaik about how this project was brought to life 13 years ago and how it has positively affected 8600 children. The 3 main ways are: Interactive Self Confidence Performance Apollo Music Projects provides a unique opportunity for children to work closely with professional musicians, using the language of music to develop listening skills, communication and teamwork. Our programmes enable students to discover for themselves how to listen to and enjoy classical music, using their own imagination and experiences to enter a new world of sound, stories and feelings. The programme introduces children to the instruments of the orchestra, the musicians who play them and the music they play, providing the opportunity to hear live music and the tools to understand what they are hearing. The programme takes the form of a residency in each school. Over two terms, the musicians gradually introduce the different members of the orchestra, starting with small groups including a string quartet, brass ensemble and woodwind quartet. At the halfway point of the programme there is a series of chamber orchestra workshops, each attended by three or four schools. This is a chance for the children to engage in music on a larger scale, to meet musicians up close and to learn about the ways in which the different instruments of the orchestra interact and join together to make music. 051: Why 18,000 schools are using ‘Out of the Ark Music’

051: Why 18,000 schools are using ‘Out of the Ark Music’

Out of the Ark Music was born out of a passionate belief that children deserve the very best. Good songs leave a lasting impression and contain huge potential to make a difference to our lives. The importance of music and the arts cannot be emphasised enough and, though often overlooked, they are a vital part of our children’s education. Our goal is… To enhance and expand children’s enjoyment of music and the world around them by producing songs that are thought provoking, relevant and most of all great fun to sing. To produce top quality materials to give today’s children music which excites them and to which they can readily relate. To teach about music using traditional methods i.e. by providing strong melodies, interesting song structures and clever rhymes and combining these with modern musical arrangements. To preserve the best of our musical and literary heritage whilst embracing modern styles and instrumentation. To write good positive songs that re-enforce self-worth and significance and that are appropriate to children’s experience. To convey truth and teach about Christian values and faith. To make all our resources completely teacher-friendly and to support our customers through excellent customer service. I interview Antony Copus – Head of Education Development about their history and new projects being developed. For full details please visit www.EducationOnFire.com History In 1989 Mark and Helen Johnson were asked to write a short nativity musical by the headteacher of the primary school where Helen was teaching. ‘Off To Bethlehem’ was a huge success and within months Mark and Helen were given the opportunity of leaving their jobs to explore and develop their gift in writing music. It was with a deep breath and a big step of faith that Mark and Helen went on to set up their own publishing and production company as a vehicle for distributing their songs to primary schools. What began with only a tiny desk under the stairs, has grown over 25 years to become a thriving business, which now supplies over 18,000 primary schools and prep schools (not to mention nurseries, churches, theatre groups, etc!) across the UK and countless others around the world. With publishing offices and a warehouse in Middlesex, a recording studio in Sussex and with an associate office in Australia, ‘Out Of The Ark’ is reaching out to the corners of the earth with good, positive songs, that everyone will enjoy. http://www.outoftheark.co.uk https://twitter.com/singoutoftheark https://www.facebook.com/outofthearkmusic https://www.youtube.com/outoftheark

042: How music was embedded at Hartwell Primary School with Jayne Clancy

042: How music was embedded at Hartwell Primary School with Jayne Clancy

Jayne Clancy was Headteacher of Hartwell Primary School for 13 years. I spoke to her at the end of the summer term 2017 in her final weeks before retiring. I wanted to interview Jayne because living locally I know what a fabulously musical school Hartwell is. I didn’t realise at the time Jayne was retiring, so this is a really fitting look back at how music in the school has played such a big part in creating a rich environment for the pupils. I wanted to share how it is possible for you to put music at the heart of your school to aid the whole curriculum, not diminish it. We discuss how the support of the staff and vision of the governors is so important in sustaining music which sounds like a fantastic platform from which the new Head Mrs Jamie Pardon can take the mantle. Hartwell Primary is also one of the cluster schools that will be involved with my new music project with Andy Williams from EWS. 039 : My education expert Peter Cansell shares his thoughts in the Season 3 Finale

My resident education expert Peter Cansell joins me in the season 3 finale ‘What do children think about their schooling?’ We talk about the themes and ideas that have come from the children and some of the insights of their parents. Peter has been in education professionally for 35 years, teaching in middle schools in Oxford, doing advisory work, teaching higher education and as a Primary Headteacher at Harwell Primary School. He retired from that post in September 2014, but has continued as Chair of OPHTA (Oxfordshire Primary Headteachers’ Association), was elected to become Chair of the National Network of Chairs of Headteachers’ Groups in June 2014 and was delighted to have become a NAPE council member this year, serving on the editorial board for Primary First. In January of 2015 he co-founded the Oxford School of Thought, an independent education think tank. He is a trustee and chairs the management committee of another charity, Full Circle, which is well regarded for its ground breaking intergenerational work. We cover educational ideas from the industrial revolution, classroom layouts, school day structures and the general attitudes of children in the education system of today. During this season I have spoken to children from around the world including the UK, USA and Hawaii It is always great to have an education expert on hand to keep me grounded! These are the 10 questions we asked: 1. If you could design your own classroom what would it look like? Eg Large open plan loft style, small rooms, sit in rows or groups? Anything goes be creative! 2. How would you create your day and spend your time? Eg How much time inside/outside, how much studying, exercise, time on your own/with others, playing, games, projects. Anything goes be creative! 3. How do you assess your progress? What do you do everyday to move forward towards your goals and dreams? 4. How often do you discuss and think about – what you eat, exercise, breathing, sleeping, mindfulness, gratitude, volunteering? 5. How often do you discuss and think about life? Babies being born or people dying. 6. How often do you discuss money, budgets, savings, financial planning? 7. Do you work with a mentor? Do you know what a mentor is? 8. How often do you lead a team of people? 9. Do you like working on real projects that are relevant to you? Eg Fundraising, events for the local community, school productions, concerts, sports events? 10. Of the things you enjoy most – do they happen in school time or are they after school clubs? 038 : How understanding homeschooling can help you in your classroom with Dr. Maelisa Hall

038 : How understanding homeschooling can help you in your classroom with Dr. Maelisa Hall

Dr. Maelisa Hall shares her experiences of traditional education and homeschooling. We discuss how the personalised learning available at home can be used to positive effect in the classroom. Having met Maelisa at Podcast Movement in California during August, we chatted about our respective podcasts. I thought Maelisa’s understanding of both school and homeschool would make an interesting conversation in my season 3 ‘What do children think about their schooling?’ I have been talking to children currently in school, but talking to an adult with a mixture of schooling experiences gave a different perspective. On the podcast we talk about the positives of both options, how flexibility became very important for their family and how the understanding of personalised learning can benefit children. Community plays a big part in our learning, so does our family. Discussing these issues brings up some very interesting ideas that you can implement in your own school or classroom. Maelisa has a new podcast launching in October 2017 called My Biz Bestie about how having a biz bestie and support system can increase your profits! 026 : At 9 years old Arnav Sharma won the Tech4Good People’s Award 2016.

• Finalist, BT Young Pioneers Award 2016 • Winner, Tech4Good People’s Award 2016 • Winner, Tech4Good Winner of Winners Award 2016 Aged just nine years old, Arnav Sharma studied the cause, diagnosis and effect of asthma and came up with a solution; the AsthmaPi kit. Using a Raspberry Pi hooked up to a range of sensors it helps anyone living with asthma and is particularly useful to anyone not sure about the diagnosis of asthma. Using email and SMS text message alerts, patients receive prompts to take medication and reminders for review visits, and the accompanying booklet makes it easy to understand asthma. Arnav started with two Raspberry Pis and added a Sense Hat, MQ-135 Gas Sensor, Sharp Optical Dust Sensor and an Arduino Uno – which he programmed using Python and C++. https://www.tech4goodawards.com/finalist/arnav-sharma/ https://www.educationonfire.com http://khanacademy.org http://raspberrypi.org

024 : ICT with Mr.P – Pt 2

Part 2 of my interview with Lee Parkinson – how we can use technology to raise standards in schools. Lee Parkinson has been a Primary Teacher for 8 years where he has built a wealth of ideas for how technology can be embedded right across the curriculum. He has successfully deployed a class set of iPads across a whole primary school and worked alongside children from EYFS through to Year 6 looking at how iPads can enhance teaching and learning throughout the curriculum. Mr Parkinson always puts learning first and looks for creative and innovative ways in which technology, such as the iPad, can be used effectively to impact on writing & reading as well as developing key numeracy skills. He has built a reputation as one of the leading advocates for camouflage teaching, tricking children into learning by using engaging methods to motivate reluctant writers and inspire boys to write. After a recent Ofsted inspection, his use of iPads within a Literacy observation was deemed “Outstanding with a phenomenal use of technology and an Outstanding outcome to the lesson.” Alongside his expertise with iPads, Mr Parkinson also provides training for how using web based tools including blogging can impact on learning and motivate children to improve writing and reading. He also has a wealth of ideas to transform your classroom into the 21st Century from a real teacher with practical ideas that work. Links of things we talked about: http://mrparkinsonict.com http://mrparkinsonict.blogspot.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/IctWithMrP/ https://twitter.com/ICT_MrP https://twitter.com/richardgerver https://twitter.com/DrChips_ https://web.seesaw.me https://bookcreator.com https://spark.adobe.com https://explaineverything.com http://get-puppet.co
