Mark Taylor
Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future.
While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced.
Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you.
‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’
370: Online mentoring program for tweens from I believe in Me
Katie, Becky, and Allie are three moms who know what it's like to raise a family, with a total of 17 children between them, they are in the trenches of motherhood. But along with being a mom, with their education and professional backgrounds in business, health, and beauty, these 3 women came together to create a company called I Believe in Me- which is an online mentoring program for tweens. For over 30 years, these women have worked in their communities, online and at special events to help girls strengthen their confidence and realize their potential. And now, with statistics of sadness and the harms of social media, they are more determined than ever to help parents and girls face the challenges today. "I Believe in Me," promotes self-motivation and resilience through tools and daily habits to foster growth. Becky, Katie and Allie are working to strengthen the hearts and minds of young girls.Websitewww.bloomfully.com/ibelieveinmeSocial Media InformationInstagram: @ibelieveinmegirlsFacebook: ibelieveinmeResources MentionedMiracle Morning Show Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)www.nape.org.uk/rosemary-evans-award-2023For support with podcasting & video please visit www.educationonfire.com/media Watch the Education on Fire Live Show every Tuesday www.educationonfire.com/youtube

369: ONVU Learning with Matthew Tiplin
ONVU Learning is a 360-degree video lesson capture system that helps teachers reflect, collaborate and analyse their entire teaching and learning process. It creates a community space where teachers can share best practice and learn easily with their coaches and peers. When Matt was an Ofsted inspector, he decided that something drastic needed to change in the way we both judged and developed teachers.Teacher CPD was always something that was ‘done to’ teachers and not ‘done by’ them. And lesson observations were disruptive, costly and ineffective. He set about creating a more supportive, teacher-led CPD programme as a senior leader in a multi-academy trust and has brought that passion and experience to his role at ONVU Learning.Matt is a founding fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, has a master’s degree in Education and a National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership. He is also passionate about music and literature and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.Websitewww.onvulearning.comSocial Media Information@ONVULearning - TwitterOnvu Learning - Facebookwww.linkedin.com/company/onvulearning/Resources MentionedThe Infinite Monkey CageShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)Watch Mark Taylor interview Al Kingsley – ‘Creating Digital Strategies for Schools’ from the Primary Education Summit – ‘Visions for the Future’ – 2023Get access to all 20 videos from the the summit at www.nape.org.uk/summitFor support with podcasting & video please visit www.educationonfire.com/media Watch the Education on Fire Live Show every Tuesday www.educationonfire.com/youtube

368: More Than A Score with Alison Ali
Children are More Than A ScoreMore Than A Score is here to change the way children are assessed and schools are judged.Primary school children in England are let down by a system that cares more about measurement than education. It’s damaging, and they deserve better. We want pupils to enjoy an exciting learning experience and then move on to secondary school with a love of learning. We don’t want them spending months cramming for government tests. We believe schools should be judged on the overall quality of education they provide, not the results of a narrow set of standardised tests. Our campaign supports school leaders and teachers who want to stimulate young minds and expand their knowledge and creative problem-solving skills, rather than having to “teach to the test”.It’s time to fundamentally change the high-stakes, high-pressure assessment system in primary schools and make good mental health the basis for good learning. But the evidence against the current system is growing. Parents, teachers and heads are united in calling for change. In 2022, only 3% of heads wanted SATs to go ahead. 89% of parents say they would support an alternative. And 1 in 10 year 6 pupils didn’t sleep well in the run-up to the tests.SATs and other government tests don’t help learning and cause unnecessary stress and pressure.Let’s speak out for children.Alison Ali Director/Owner Can Can CampaignsAlison began her career in journalism, moving into international consumer publishing. Her experience runs from human rights and global finance reporting, to launching premium multilanguage magazines and digital platforms for household brand names. 356: Voice 21 - oracy education charity with Amy Gaunt
Voice 21 is the UK’s oracy education charity. They work with schools to transform the learning and life chances of young people through talk. They campaign for oracy to have a higher status in the education system.Oracy skills are vital to success in school and in life. And yet, for many children, especially those growing up in poverty, opportunities to develop these vital skills are missed. Only a minority of schools have consistent, coherent or adequately resourced provision to develop these skills in their students.Voice 21's sustained approach weaves oracy into a school’s DNA, ensuring current and future students have access to a high-quality oracy education. This means that students in Voice 21 Oracy Schools, including those who would otherwise miss out, develop the oracy skills they need for success in school and in life. Amy Gaunt is Director of Learning and Impact at Voice 21. Amy joined the charity's founding leadership team in 2016 and has supported its growth from one London school to a network of nearly 1000 schools across the UK. She has developed Voice 21's approach to oracy education, teacher development and school improvement and has led the development of their impact function. She is co-author of Transform Teaching and Learning through Talk: the Oracy Imperative and Voice 21's Oracy Benchmarks. Hoquiam School District is using Remio's VR platform to drive social emotional learning among its students and reshape social connections impacted during the pandemic, and the positive impact is undeniable as students are eager to play and learn with each other in VR.Hoquiam School District manages 1600 students across high school, middle school and elementary school in Washington state. Over the past year, the district has undergone major curriculum outreach to students with VR learning programs by working with Remio's VR platform and VEDX Solutions offering 'class packs' that also provide training and 30 Quest 2 headsets so that educators can operate whole classrooms in VR at once.Remio provides an all-in-one solution for remote learning environments and team collaboration in the metaverse. The platform enables students and teachers to onboard into VR in a fun, safe space where they can create their avatar, play, socialize and gain confidence engaging with their peers in a VR environment before moving into the school’s curriculum.Chris Nitti, Digital Age Coordinator for Hoquiam School District, started the program and immediately over 100 students applied to join a small test group of 20 who participated this past summer in a Remio-based VR event. Nitti says he specifically looked for diversity, bringing in students across special education, students who are homeless, students who are transgender, football players, band geeks, the whole spectrum. The group played virtual paintball together for about 20 minutes, showing great communication, teamwork, collaboration, and engagement. One of the students said, "I don't even know any of you before we put these headsets on, but now I feel like we're real friends and I just want to get back into the world with you." Nitti says that these social experiences in the VR environment 'levels the playing field' and produces equitable and inclusive experiences for students, so that constructs like appearance, class or cliques don't matter in helping...

333: Creating art to be and stay human with Michaell Magrutsche
Michaell Magrutsche is an Austrian/Californian multidisciplinary artist, awareness and creativity educator, speaker, and author. Michaell’s dyslexia and dysgraphia forced him to develop an awareness of seeing the world purely from a human perspective. Creating art completed his awareness of what it is to be human-relevant vs system-relevant.Michaell’s talent is recognizing awareness to seed a new consciousness that allows us to unveil the untapped superpowers of human’s limitlessness, art/creativity, healthy discourse and adaptability to make all humans fit within our human tapestry.Because Michaell has been a sick child also dyslexic and has dysgraphia (hand eye coordination) he could only navigate in very few systems. Michaell was forced to find his salvation in art. Interacting and creating art outside of systems helped him feel humane and got him through life. Michaell is completely self-taught. Art allowed him to experience life with other humans and 5 books later, Michaell produced with Robert Evans and became a City Arts Commissioner etc. etc.Michaell discovered that creating art is humans greatest inherent superpower, followed by healthy dialogue and our adaptability. These superpowers are applicable to everything from Creativity, Leadership, Business, Education, Relationships and what else humans focus on.Today, Michaell keeps unveiling the limitations of all man-made systems like technology, science, economy and generalized knowledge to change systems to be more human adaptable instead of humans keep forcing themselves to be system adaptive.Michaell’s mission is to show us something very different.Website & Social Media www.michaellm.comShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)Primary Education Summit – ‘Visions for the Future’ – March 2023Book NOW at www.nape.org.uk/summitMentioned in this episode:NAPE Al Kingsley Summit PromoWatch Mark Taylor interview Al Kingsley about 'Creating Digital Strategies for Schools' as part of the Primary Education Summit 2023 - Visions for the Future - presented by National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)

332: What is self-efficacy and why should we be paying attention to it in Primary Schools?
RS Assessment conducted a study among 21,000 key stage 2 pupils in English schools recently. The study was funded by the Nuffield Foundation and aims to better understand the longer-term impacts of the Covid lockdowns on this cohort of kids’ attainment, wellbeing and attitudes to learning. What is self-efficacy and why should we be paying attention to it in Primary Schools? We talk a lot about self-esteem in our children, but what is the connection between self-efficacy and their achievements? Our research shows that the majority of Key Stage 2 pupils report feeling some vulnerability in self-efficacy, with large (greater than 7 Percentage Point, or 14%) drops since the pandemic. Professor Clare Wood and Katie Blainey, Director of Assessment at Hodder Education talk about the role of self-efficacy in improving pupil outcomes and how we can we restore our children’s sense of their ability to achieve – both in the classroom and at home.Websitewww.risingstars-uk.com/rs-assessment/whitepaperswww.schoolsweek.co.uk/whats-up-with-year-3-and-what-can-we-do-about-it/Watch the live recording of this podcast at www.youtube.com/@educationonfire5530/streamsShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)Primary Education Summit – ‘Visions for the Future’ – March 2023Book NOW at www.nape.org.uk/summitMentioned in this episode:NAPE Al Kingsley Summit PromoWatch Mark Taylor interview Al Kingsley about 'Creating Digital Strategies for Schools' as part of the Primary Education Summit 2023 - Visions for the Future - presented by National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)

321: Global Girl Project with Julia Lynch
Julia Lynch founded Global Girl Project in 2014, after over twenty years working as a Community Social Worker and Therapist. During this time Julia traveled extensively, including time spent in Tanzania and Jamaica providing community and health services to local at-risk communities. This work ignited her passion for supporting marginalized girls, and GGP was born. As a woman of colour who grew up in a small, white town Julia learned from an early age how imperative it is to see yourself represented in positions of power and leadership. Since that time, Julia has worked tirelessly to not only be a role model for her global girls, but to train them on how to be role models and leaders to others within their communities. As the Founding Director, Julia works in partnership with NGOs and schools globally to implement and run leadership programs and initiatives for girls throughout the developing world. Julia not only works directly with our scholars online, but also runs the day-to-day operations of GGP from the United Kingdom. Through GGP programming the impact in each local partner country has been evident. From an increase in self-confidence, leadership skills and self-perceived power and autonomy from the girls, to a shift in perception of gender roles and capabilities from local community members, the impact that is being created is truly global in scope.Websitewww.globalgirlproject.orgSocial Media Informationwww.facebook.com/globalgirlprojectwww.linkedin.com/company/global-girl-project/Instagram: globalgirlprojectTwitter: @GlobalGirlProjShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)Primary Education Summit – ‘Visions for the Future’ – March 2023Book NOW at www.nape.org.uk/summitMentioned in this episode:NAPE Al Kingsley Summit PromoWatch Mark Taylor interview Al Kingsley about 'Creating Digital Strategies for Schools' as part of the Primary Education Summit 2023 - Visions for the Future - presented by National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)
