Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future.
While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced.
Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you.
‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’

Understanding who we are and how we see the world around us is very important. Therefore surrounding ourselves with people who can be a positive influence is very important and yet we must realise that schools are part of a system that - like it or hate it - can be less than positive for many children who have to be part of it.Navigating this and being true to ourselves is the key to the future of a thriving planet.‘Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire’.Join us around the campfire and help guide Education on Fire to positively affect the way children feel about life, learning and their future.

We continue our Primary Music on Fire specials with the opportunity to learn about one of our members Chris Livingstone. We discuss the courses Chris has developed for Get 2 Learn Music and explain how you can sign up for our upcoming webinar where you can get a look inside his rhythm courses. Primary Music on Fire members will receive a discount on any purchases from the webinar.Chris Livingstone has been teaching music for over 20 years. In 2008 he began teaching whole class music in UK schools as part of the first access music program (aka wider opps). As he travelled to many schools delivering music he noticed that the regular class teachers who assisted him in delivering music would realise that they could deliver the fundamentals of music themselves even without specialist instrumental knowledge providing they had great visual resources lesson plans and the right support. This led him to develop courses to help all teachers to deliver the fundamentals of music regardless of their teaching background or specialism.Sign up here to receive a FREE Primary Music on Fire rhythm game download and get on the email waiting list for the webinar.https://www.educationonfire.com/primary-music/Websitehttps://gtlm-school-of-music.teachable.com www.get2learnmusic.com/freeSocial MediaFacebook - get2learnmusicShow Sponsor The National Association for Primary Education speaks for young children and all who live and work with them. 112: Happy Teachers and Conscious Schools
Season 7 ‘Wellbeing’ continues on the Education on Fire Podcast.
Helen Pengelly – Happy Teachers & Conscious Schools
Happy Teachers was founded by Helen Pengelly in 2015. Her mission is to enable all school leaders, teachers and pupils to shine their inner light out into the world. However too many teachers are overwhelmed, stressed and burned out. They are struggling with ever increasing workloads and trying to balance their work and home life. 82% of teachers say their school does not do enough to help them with their wellbeing (according to a TES survey in 2017). As a result more teachers are leaving the profession for good or are going off sick with stress-related illnesses. The financial cost for schools is huge when they have to pay for supply cover and extortionate recruitment fees.
When Helen was in primary school she was top of the class. She went to a grammar school where she was also in the top sets. So why for much of her adult life was she a massive underachiever?
She dropped out of university at 19, struggled to secure a well-paid job, was in an abusive marriage and lost her house.
In her fifties the penny dropped. Trauma. She had an unusual illness as a child for which she was shamed and bullied. She was afraid to speak out and to follow her heart so she became a people pleaser.
In her early career she worked as a bookkeeper and started to train as an accountant. In the 1990s she lived abroad and worked as an EFL teacher. She went back to university in her 30s and qualified as a maths teacher in 2002.
Helen was one of the 40% of teachers who leave in the first 5 years. The reasons were complex – being a single mum to 3 young boys, illness, lack of fulfillment, being bullied, being stuck in a classroom that only looked out on a brick wall to name but a few.
After she left she ran a business selling gluten free food for 5 years then returned to teaching in 2010. This time her experience was very different. Why? In the meantime she had learned to meditate. She had realised that no one else was responsible for her happiness and whatever had happened in the past did not define her future.
She wondered why she had never been taught this in her teacher training and in 2010 set an intention to help teachers with their personal growth and development. She qualified as a leadership coach in 2014 and was a pioneer in the school wellbeing movement. Now she helps headteachers and teachers gain balance in their lives and take back their power.
Her long term vision is to work with more headteachers to create a network of conscious schools and end the cycle of shame.
Do you have a wellbeing policy or don’t you even know where to start? Are you getting into a panic about staff wellbeing and making more work which defeats the object? You can’t think your way out of this dilemma the solution is easier than you think.

110: Whole School Approach to LGBT+ Inclusion
Welcome to season 7 of the Education on Fire Podcast which is focusing on Wellbeing.
My guest today is Shaun Dellenty who has worked in education for twenty years as a class teacher, school leader, improving schools consultant and school governor. In 2009, faced with significant homophobic bullying in his own London Primary School he responded by devising a ground-breaking (now multi-award) winning compassion based training approach to LGBT+ inclusion in learning communities ‘Inclusion For All.’ This programme continues to be delivered around the the U.K. and overseas.
In 2016 he was honoured by the U.K. Prime Minister for services to education and LGBT+ communities and in 2019 his first book ‘Celebrating Difference- A Whole School Approach to LGBT+ Inclusion’ was published by Bloomsbury Education. The book was immediately recommended in UK Parliament. Shaun works nationally and internationally, training school based staff, lecturing trainee teachers and recounting his inspiring journey from bullied teenager to nationally celebrated advocate to countless young people. His work has featured in the press and on television and is recommended by the Church of England and Faith and Beliefs Forum.

108: Student Breakthrough with Sam Moinet
Welcome to season 7 of the Education on Fire Podcast which is focusing on Wellbeing.
Today I chat to Sam about how he is inspiring happiness, success and wellbeing in students across the world.
Hi, I’m Sam Moinet, founder of Student Breakthrough.
I believe there is a new type of student. A student that gains life skills that they don’t teach in the classroom. Students who are empowered with the tools, vision and beliefs to help them live their best life so they can change the world.
From teaching for over half a decade I found that there was not enough time or the right type of support to help students succeed and this led to lots of problems.
I found the solution and I started coaching students 1-1, and the results were incredible.
I give my students the missing piece of the puzzle so they can stop getting lost on the back roads and instead take the fast track to success.
We implement our signature 3B Formula of Boost, Believe and Breakthrough which has proven to improve grades, relationships and mental health.
This is for you – the parent or relative who wants to offer a revolutionary type of provision for their child.
As Frederick Douglas said “it is easier to build strong children that to repair broken men.”

As an author I have a publishing deal with Kevin Mayhew Ltd and my first book ‘Classical Uke’ was published in December 2017. In March 2019 I was the first ukulele player to ever be featured on the cover of the world famous BMG Magazine.
I am a regular columnist for several magazines including ‘Ukulele Magazine’, ‘Ukulele Bonanza’ and ‘BMG Magazine.
Several pieces from my new book ‘Classical Uke’ are featured in the VCM (Victoria College of Music) Ukulele exam syllabus. I am a proud member of The Registry of Guitar Teachers (RGT). I am an experienced vocalist, songwriter and music producer and have previously been signed to Firestation Records as a singer/songwriter. My songs have been played on Radio 1 and other local BBC stations and, as a songwriter, I have been interviewed by the BBC and featured in PRS magazine.
Ukulele School
Ukulele School is aimed at anyone teaching ukulele in primary schools. Using ‘Ukulele School’ you can teach the ukulele to meet National Curriculum requirements for Key Stages 1 and 2. Even teachers who have never played the ukulele before can deliver exciting and rewarding lessons that children will really enjoy!
Ukulele School has 12 catchy songs that children will love to play and sing, even if they are complete beginners. It has been carefully arranged by professional ukulele player and teacher Paul Mansell, to take children from playing just one chord, through to more challenging songs. Paul has drawn on his many years’ experience of teaching the ukulele to ensure that you will teach the correct techniques, along with the basics of music notation, whilst using a fun approach.

You can watch Paul give Carol Aveyard and Mark Taylor live ukulele lessons as part of the Education on Fire 4 Day Ukulele challenge.

095: My education expert discusses English and literacy
Peter Cansell talks to me about his thoughts on the English & literacy season so far.
Peter is my resident education expert. The person who provides the bigger picture and will tell me that you can’t just play music all day at school other subjects are important too!
Peter has been in education professionally for 35 years, teaching in middle schools in Oxford, doing advisory work, teaching higher education and as a Primary Headteacher at Harwell Primary School. He retired from that post in September 2014, but has continued as Chair of OPHTA (Oxfordshire Primary Headteachers’ Association), was elected to become Chair of the National Network of Chairs of Headteachers’ Groups in June 2014 and was delighted to have become a NAPE council member this year, serving on the editorial board for Primary First. In January of 2015 he co-founded the Oxford School of Thought, an independent education think tank. He is a trustee and chairs the management committee of another charity, Full Circle, which is well regarded for its ground breaking intergenerational work.

090: Enchanted Wanderers with Emmy & Taran
Two primary school teachers from Devon, Emmy and Taran, make up the Enchanted Wanderers. At their core, they just want to help children to grow; grow with self- confidence and self-belief in their own voice and ideas and to use this to empower their future learning.
Contrary to the serious tone of this statement, they to do this in a way that is fun and creative for all involved. With stories and storytelling as the root, the Enchanted Wanderers use art, circus, music and drama to produce a space that immerses children into new worlds. A space in which children can be themselves and express their ideas in ways that suit them best. A space that inspires children to create and combine, learn and grow.
Within the workshops, children learnt how to make their own pieces of magical art, conjured up circus tricks that led them through pivotal story moments and added musical accompaniment to deepen the mood and atmosphere of their stories. Throughout the day, the children got to experience new activities, solve problems, make friends, tell stories and be the leaders of their own learning. It all ended with the opportunity to share their stories, creations and/or circus skills in a child led show for the parents.
Following their first tour of workshops around Devon and Somerset, the Enchanted Wanderers had acquired a plethora of stories from children who had been inspired to write and they felt that more should be done with these stories to really show the children that what they create is valued and important.
Soon followed the next branch of Enchanted Wanderers who have created a platform for children’s stories to reach the world. Teachers, parents and children can all send stories and Emmy and Taran will re-tell them on their YouTube channel. As YouTube’s importance grows, stories need to remain relevant and accessible.
There is more to come from the Enchanted Wanderers with books, new workshops and a few extra little secrets sprouting some roots.
Schools in Australia are encouraged to contact Enchanted Wanderers throughout 2019 to book their workshop. Schools in England are encouraged to get in touch about availability in 2020. While schools all across the world should email about availability to have their children’s stories read online by these international storytellers.

089: Planet Poetry & Xientifica SOS with Daniel Phelps
NEW BOOK USES STORYTELLING AND POETRY TO SHOW CHILDREN THE BEAUTY OF SCIENCE
Xientifica SOS was written by University of Winchester Researcher Daniel Phelps, and features illustrations by Beth Gibbs, a student at Winchester School of Art. It follows five schoolchildren, each with different gifts, who are thrust into a fight for survival that tests their minds, bodies, courage and teamwork.
Aimed at 8-12 year olds, Xientifica SOS looks to inspire children to engage with science in a creative way, embedding over 50 scientific concepts, ideas and facts into the story.
Daniel Phelps said: “This is not a science book, it is a children’s adventure story which has science in it. Children learn best whenever they are interested in something and enjoying themselves. That is what Xientifica SOS aims to do – to create such a learning environment. Children might not get excited about science facts when they read them in a science text book, however, they really do love fascinating and amazing science facts about the world around them.’
The book is unusual in that it combines learning with poetry, riddles and narrative.
“This approach helps children learn, with the context of the story providing a ‘scaffold’ to support their understanding of scientific concepts,” Daniel said, “Ultimately, this helps them see why science is important, which is key.”
Xientifica SOS can be read for pleasure or used as educational aid in schools or homeschooling to encourage learners to ask questions and conversations about science.
Daniel Phelps is a Researcher at the University of Winchester. He is currently undertaking a three-year evaluation into the provision of support for young carers across Hampshire. Alongside his role at Winchester, he is also a children’s author and poet. He runs Planetpoetry.co.uk, a website hosting modern children’s poetry, and his poetry has been featured on the BBC’s CBeebies channel and is regularly published in school anthologies.
Xientifica SOS is available for purchase from Amazon in both ebook and paperback form. Find out more about the novel here: www.xientifica.com

On this weeks show Mark Taylor and Carol Aveyard talk about what is inside the Primary Music on Fire Membership Site.
Taking the fear out of teaching music, by giving you the step by step skills and ongoing support you need, to produce lifelong musical memories for you, your school and your pupils.
Are you a teacher who wants to create or develop music in your school?
Do you need support and resources? GET OUR FREE MUSIC GAMES DOWNLOAD BELOW.
Do you need CPD and a private forum of like-minded teachers to bounce ideas around with?
Do you want to know multiple ways to document what you create and how to include everyone into fun music making classes whatever their needs or abilities?
Do you need this without the cost to school of employing a specialist member of staff?
If the answer is yes and you want to create an environment for your pupils to thrive through the magic of music, you are in the right place.
For a many years now schools have been asking me for help and advice about how to support music in their primary schools. I have replied to emails and visited schools to deliver workshops and CPD, but I want to do more. As a professional musician and music educator, I know the life changing effect music can have on children’s lives. I am one such child.
Having created the Education on Fire podcast network, recorded a ‘Music and the Arts’ podcast series, and had 515,000 YouTube views of my rhythm workshops, I have decided to create something that will benefit as many schools as possible.
We are building a community of teachers who want to deliver the best music experience possible for their pupils.
Your membership will give you access to:
– Primary Music Pyramid – training on how to lay the foundations that help embed music at the heart of your school. We will support music co-ordinators, non-music-specialists and music teachers in whole class singing, rhythm and pitch.
– Learning instruments – we can show you how to take the first steps in teaching your class ocarinas, recorders, ukulele, boomwhackers, samba and more. We can also show you where to find the best resources as you flourish and become a confident music provider.
– Choirs and ensembles – how to set them up and support them to thrive with insights into all the best resources available.
– How to create a performing culture in your school with music assemblies, concerts, recitals, or festivals.
– Performing opportunities outside of school and in the local community.
– Using music with your class topic.
– Forums for teachers to share their experiences and help others gain the knowledge and support they need.

076: Headteacher view of PE
Peter Cansell is my resident education expert. He has great experience of teaching PE in primary schools, as well as being responsible for how it was integrated into his school when he was a Headteacher.
Peter has been in education professionally for 35 years, teaching in middle schools in Oxford, doing advisory work, teaching higher education and as a Primary Headteacher at Harwell Primary School. He retired from that post in September 2014, but has continued as Chair of OPHTA (Oxfordshire Primary Headteachers’ Association), was elected to become Chair of the National Network of Chairs of Headteachers’ Groups in June 2014 and was delighted to have become a NAPE council member. He serves on the editorial board for Primary First and now holds the post Information Officer. In January of 2015 he co-founded the Oxford School of Thought, an independent education think tank. He is a trustee and chairs the management committee of another charity, Full Circle, which is well regarded for its ground breaking intergenerational work.

073: The PE Specialist with Ben Landers
Ben Landers – The PE Specialist
Ben started this website ThePEspecialist.com in 2014 in an effort to provide an amazing resource for teachers. He has a passion for kids and teaching quality physical education lessons that will empower students to be the best they can be. Being a PE teacher is such a great opportunity to have a positive impact on the kids that you teach, but his hope is to also impact more students through providing resources and ideas to teachers.
The reason he started The PE Specialist is to share knowledge, inspire teachers, add value to the Phys Ed community and help solve some of the problems that teachers are struggling with in schools today.
Ben Landers is a K-12 certified Physical Education teacher and has been teaching K-5th PE since 2007. He has completed National Board Certification in PE and also has a Masters in Education from Southern Wesleyan University and a Masters in Educational Leadership from University of South Carolina. Ben also serves as a Clinical Model Teacher for the University of South Carolina, helping to mentor future Physical Education teachers as part of their graduation requirement.
