Education
Mark Taylor
Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future. While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced. Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you. ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’

Love is an action word; it's essential to demonstrate love through actions, not just words. A child's success is influenced by their parents' attitudes and the environment they create. Parents must believe in their child's potential and provide a supportive learning environment. Your attitude shapes your experiences; it's more crucial than the events themselves. Effective parenting involves teaching children essential life skills and encouraging them to be lifelong learners. Unlocking Potential: How Middle School MBA Transforms Young Minds

Unlocking Potential: How Middle School MBA Transforms Young Minds

John Foster is an author, executive, angel investor, and lifelong student of markets, John’s career failed its way through process engineering, operations, business management, M&A, and corporate strategy; finally failing big enough to exit. He now teaches kids the lowdown on business and entrepreneurship, hoping they will fail bigger and sooner.John discusses the transformative approach of Middle School MBA, a curriculum designed to teach middle school students advanced business and economic concepts. He challenges traditional educational methods, questioning why students aren't leaving high school with a solid grasp of subjects like calculus or business principles, and highlights the need for a curriculum that prepares them for real-world applications. He believes in confronting failure as a vital part of learning, encouraging students to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks. The conversation delves into the significance of fostering critical thinking and resilience in students, ultimately aiming to make learning more relevant and engaging.Takeaways: The traditional educational system often prioritizes the needs of teachers over the students. Students should be equipped to understand complex subjects like business and economics from a young age. Failure is an essential part of learning, and students should be encouraged to confront it. By using innovative teaching methods, we can make business principles accessible to middle schoolers. Empowering teachers to teach advanced concepts can lead to better student engagement and understanding. Resilience and perseverance are key traits that students need to develop for lifelong success. From Classroom to Creativity: Redefining Learning with Douglas Robbins

From Classroom to Creativity: Redefining Learning with Douglas Robbins

Douglas Robbins is a passionate writer and author, he discovered the power of words at a young age. Fuelled by a deep connection to language, he dedicated himself to writing and has authored five captivating books. Douglas also has a podcast for seekers looking to improve themselves and the world. The discussion between Mark Taylor and Douglas Robbins tackles the essential question of what education should truly encompass in the 21st century.Douglas shares his conviction that traditional education systems often fail to address the emotional and psychological needs of students, leaving them ill-prepared for adulthood. He articulates a vision of education that fosters individualism and creativity, suggesting that schools should serve as environments where children can explore their identities and passions. Through personal anecdotes, Robbins illustrates how emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in one's ability to succeed in life, stressing that a well-rounded education must include lessons on handling emotions, relationships, and personal finances. By highlighting the disconnect between educational practices and the real-world skills needed for success, Robbins challenges listeners to rethink their views on what constitutes valuable knowledge and encourages a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to teaching.Takeaways: Education should focus on emotional intelligence and personal growth, not just academic skills. Children often struggle with navigating emotions, and schools should teach emotional awareness skills. Individuality in education is crucial; each child has unique strengths and interests. The importance of connecting with one's authentic self is key to personal development. Creativity in education is essential for solving complex problems in today's world. Finding a supportive community helps individuals thrive and express their true selves. Daylighting Education with Dr. Doug Milburn

Daylighting Education with Dr. Doug Milburn

Great buildings need a connection to the outdoors, one that is only achieved through the use of glass. Uncontrolled sunlight causes glare and overheating that can make an otherwise beautiful space painful to be in. New building energy codes can block your way. So Dr. Doug Milburn of Advanced Glazings Ltd created Solera® a line of highly insulating light diffusing glass. What you should consider about Daylighting Education.Daylighting done well produces visual comfort. Glare is eliminated. Light intensity is even. Eyes never strain to reveal detail in a space.Daylighting done well doesn’t compromise the thermal efficiency of a building envelope. With the right product, daylighting can actually enhance thermal efficiency.Daylighting done well permits sunlight to penetrate deep within a space, not merely along its perimeter. Glare caused by the sharp contrast between light and dark is eliminated, creating well-lit interiors for occupants.Daylighting done well comes in the form of insulated translucent glazings that provide the highest thermal performance requirements with a very small environmental footprint.Daylighting done well should not necessitate the use of costly passive daylighting controls such as interior blinds or exterior sunshades.Dr. Doug Milburn is the founder of Advanced Glazings Ltd. He talks to me about his knowledge and passion to create the best possible environment for students to learn. The Adventures of Jelly Bean

The Adventures of Jelly Bean

Follow Jelly Bean on her exciting adventures as a fourth-grader facing challenges that resonate with children of her age. From navigating friendships and family dynamics to discovering the complexities of life, Jelly Bean’s journey is filled with valuable life lessons.Amy Meislin Pollack, a retired teacher, parent and grandparent, highlights how to raise happy children, how to talk to them about difficult topics and how to help them face challenges like bullying, low-self esteem, friendship, popularity, death, race, drugs, alcohol, feeling neglected and family issues.Ever since she was in fourth grade – back in 1960 – Amy was writing and telling stories about a character named Jelly Bean. She never stopped telling those stories, sharing them with her students over a teaching career that spanned 40+ years. She shared them with her three children when they were younger – and then with her seven grandchildren. Now her stories have been made available to everyone with the recent publishing of two coming-of-age books intended for middle-graders, The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean. The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean are the stories of a fourth-grader who faces challenges that just about all children her age can recognize. Her parents don’t approve of her favorite friend in the whole world. She has trouble getting along with the brother who is closest in age to her. The uncle she loves so much is about to marry the most awful woman she could ever imagine, and the girl who used to be her best friend has turned on her. Jelly Bean faces these and other stumbling blocks, including: the difficulties in achieving and maintaining popularity and how important having certain friends should be to her; difficulties inherent in relationships with various friends and family members; and learning how to make decisions on her own. In these first two books of my middle-grade series, Jelly Bean comes to understand that much of life is trial and error, and that the only constant in life is that it is always changing.Websitewww.amypollack.comSocial Media Informationinkedin.com/in/amy-pollack-9b111882twitter.com/AdvOfJellyBeanfacebook.com/Author.AmyMeislinPollackinstagram.com/jellybeanthebookseriesShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE) www.nape.org.ukSupport the show at www.educationonfire.com/supportHave you seen our live shows on YouTube? www.EducationOnFire.com/youtube

America in Therapy with Phyllis E. Leavitt, MA

Phyllis Leavitt has worked extensively with abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their aftermath, and some of the most important elements for healing. Her focus today is on her latest book, America in Therapy: A New Approach to Hope and Healing for a Nation in Crisis.'When I became a psychotherapist, I never imagined I would one day be entering a “political” arena. But the more I worked with widespread family dysfunction and its horrifying legacy of pain and violence, the more I realized that the greatest threat to our survival as a country and as a species is our declining mental health.I knew that what we have learned about healing family violence can and must be applied to healing America. I felt compelled to leave the confines of my office and speak to a broader audience. I wanted to share my message of urgency to get ourselves on a path of healing, and I wanted to share a message of Hope that we can restore ourselves to Safety, Peace, and Love by healing the wounds we have suffered and the wounds we have inflicted that keep a cycle of violence going. 384: A new innovation to support your college searching journey with Troove

Dave has lived and worked around the world, and is now based in Burlington Vermont with his wife and two Golden Retrievers. Their 3 “kids” have now graduated from college, but it was his experience with them on their college journeys that started his innovator’s brain cranking on what became Troove. Having worked in admissions through grad school, he was amazed by how little technology and the internet had impacted the college search and admissions process. And even more, he was dismayed to discover how often students were transferring or dropping out altogether. In early 2020, this led directly to his founding Troove, a 2-sided, AI powered platform to help students discover their passions, people, and place based on the real experiences of recent alumni and current higher education students.Dave Hurwitt is an innovator. Over the course of his career, he’s led the development and launch of new products and services – from toothpicks to wind turbines – that have generated well over $1 billion in sales. If you have a large, front loading washing machine in your house, that was Dave and his team at Whirlpool. They re-envisioned the traditional, small European washer for the US market and took front loaders from 1% of the market to over 50% today, saving billions of dollars in electricity and water consumption in the process.Websitewww.troove.meSocial Media InformationInstagram: www.instagram.com/troove.me/Facebook: www.facebook.com/www.troove.meLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/trooveme/YouTube: www.youtube.com/@trooveitShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE) https://nape.org.uk/SEND Conference Friday 26th April – Hybrid eventLondon School of Public Relations – www.lspr-education.com/podcasting-course/Delivered by Mark Taylor. The 1-day Essentials of Podcasting Certificated short course is highly practical and packed full of useful information to get you on the road to producing your own professional podcasts. Reid’s story begins at his own high school, where his life began to diverge from that of his best friend Jamie as soon as he enrolled in advanced classes across the hall. After graduation, the gap widened as Reid pursued an elite degree studying educational opportunity in America. In an attempt to close the opportunity gap between students like him and Jamie, Reid took a job as a teacher at Battery Creek High, a severely under-resourced school in South Carolina where students were flunking out of their classes not because they were incapable, but because the coursework was too easy. Reid and a team of teachers and students rallied to increase enrollment in the advanced track for those who didn’t fit the honor student mold. In one year, the program doubled to become the largest provider in the state, and performance on the college-level tests increased by 20%.Wanting to effect change on a larger scale, Reid founded Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS) to find and help students all over the country who have been overlooked, discouraged, or are otherwise missing from higher-level learning opportunities.Backed by new research and original survey data of millions of teachers and students across the country, his forthcoming book THE KID ACROSS THE HALL: The Fight for Opportunity in Our Schools (Redwood Press/Stanford University Press; September 5) vividly chronicles Reid’s triumphs, setbacks, and insights as he learned firsthand that the hard task of educational reform will take much more than the Hollywood myth of the well-intentioned teacher who saves the day.Websitewww.reid4waschools.comTHE KID ACROSS THE HALL: The Fight for Opportunity in Our SchoolsSocial Media Informationhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/reid-saarishttps://www.facebook.com/reid4waschools?mibextid=ZbWKwLShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE) https://nape.org.uk/SEND Conference Friday 26th April - Hybrid eventLondon School of Public Relations - www.lspr-education.com/podcasting-course/Delivered by Mark Taylor. 377: The London Interdisciplinary School with Prof Carl Gombrich

LIS is building a new university based on interdisciplinarity and tackling complex real-world problems. Instead of specialising in a single subject area, our students learn through a problem-based interdisciplinary approach, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc). Solutions to the world's most complex and interconnected problems won't come from a single specialism or subject. We need to bring together experts and knowledge from across the arts, sciences and humanities. In a world faced by increasingly complex challenges, it’s never been more important to find new ways of learning. We need young people who are more versatile, more entrepreneurial, and more resilient than ever before. But the current education system is siloed, and students are forced down a singular academic path, pushing them to specialise in one subject area. At LIS, we think there’s a straightforward case for an interdisciplinary curriculum: problems are interdisciplinary, so our curriculum should be too. The London Interdisciplinary School place a premium on teaching rather than research. They have brought together a diverse and outstanding group of academics, entrepreneurs, and educationalists. The LIS team includes philosophers, epidemiologists, artists, journalists, behavioural scientists, and mathematicians, as well as entrepreneurs and professionals.Websitewww.lis.ac.ukSocial Media InformationInstagram: @weare_lisTwitter/X: @weareLISTikTok: @we_are_lisResources MentionedDavid Goggins Chris WilliamsonAndrew HubermanShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)https://nape.org.uk/For support with podcasting & video please visit www.educationonfire.com/media Watch the Education on Fire Live Show every Tuesday www.educationonfire.com/youtubeMentioned in this episode:NAPE Al Kingsley Summit PromoWatch Mark Taylor interview Al Kingsley about 'Creating Digital Strategies for Schools' as part of the Primary Education Summit 2023 - Visions for the Future - presented by National Association for Primary Education (NAPE) https://www.educationonfire.com/creating-digital-strategies-for-schools/
