“Brains, Beauty, and Brawn: Pro-Aging through Muscle Management:” our interview with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon
This week’s podcast episode features an interview with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon., co-hosted by Amina Altai.
Dr. Lyon is a holistic functional family medicine practitioner who received her doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine
She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she studied vitamin and mineral metabolism, chronic disease prevention and management and the physiological effects of diet composition.
She also completed a research/clinical fellowship in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics at Washington University in St. Louis.
Her philosophy of Muscle-Centric Medicine™ is her ground-breaking concept of eliminating unwanted body fat while building muscle and allowing for continued metabolism boosts and long-term wellness.
Dr. Lyon also promotes exercise as another way to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. More than just physical activity, adults need muscle-targeting exercises to ensure long-term health and decreased risk of chronic disease.
Her patients include elite military operators such as Navy SEALS, Green Berets, Army Rangers and Canadian Assaulters, as well as everyday heroes and heroines who benefit from her whole-body, whole-person approach, including advanced nutrition interventions, metabolic and genetic testing and personalized behavioral action plans.
Amina AlTai:
“Your next level of success will not come from DOING more. It will come from being more you.” Amina is a Holistic Leadership & Mindset Coach and corporate trainer. She is the first social entrepreneur to successfully create a methodology that supports the health of a business and its people at the same time.
Her journey has been illustrious.
After starting her career in marketing at Cartier, she went on to co-found a marketing agency specifically to support emerging and growth-stage brands. After over 7 years of working on brands ranging from Samsung to Avene, MD SolarSciences and Supersmile as well as helping to launch over 30 start-ups, she went on to lead marketing efforts for Spafinder Wellness—the largest media and marketing company in the wellness space. She later took a post at Bliss as head brand integration officer—overseeing the product, spa and E-commerce businesses.
Pretty major.
Then, as you’ve heard her describe on her previous Forever FAB podcast interview, she hit a proverbial wall.
That wall, that block was perhaps a blessing in disguise, a message, and maybe even a motivating impetus to help her fulfill her higher purpose-- that of helping to heal herself and the world. It’s one of the many reasons why I connected with Amina; we both share the desire to make the world a more beautiful place.
Recommendations/The F.A.B. Five according to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon:
Have integrity;
Treat people as you wish to be treated;
Be truthful;
Build an amazing community;
Invest in your family.

New York, doing theatrical makeup for Broadway shows. From there, she went on to working on network television, providing makeup for shows on CBS, the CW, HBO, and for "The Today Show.”
She subsequently launched her own makeup studio, Laura Geller Makeup Studio, on the Upper East side of Manhattan in 1993.
Although she found stratospheric success as a makeup artist, at heart, she is a teacher. It was her devotion to making make-up work for real women, every woman, that led her to create her
own beauty brand and launch it on QVC over 20 years ago.
Laura is a board member of the CEW Foundation, the non-profit organization that created the Cancer & Careers program dedicated to empowering and educating people with cancer to
thrive in their workplace.
In 2011, she was also honored by the City of Hope in recognition of her generous support of multiple cancer-focused charities.
In 2012, Crain’s New York Business recognized Laura as one of the Top Entrepreneurs of the Year.

This week’s podcast episode features an interview with Vanessa Ford.
You may not realize the signs. One day, you feel whole, purposeful, and full of energy. The next day, you feel out of sorts. Though nothing has changed in your outside world, something inside feels off-balance. You work out religiously, but the slice of pizza you only looked at but didn’t eat seemed to have found its way onto your scale.
Your skin is drier and the grey hairs appeared overnight. You love life, yet your energy levels wax and wane.
Should you give away those fabulous clothes in your closet that no longer fit? Or do you hold onto them thinking that more exercise and a stricter diet will help you wear them again with confidence?
You love your partner, yet sometimes, you think of the unspeakable.
You’re hot and sweating at 3:00 pm, then cold and reaching for a cashmere pashmina the next.
Whatever this is… it’s temporary. Maybe it’s even normal. Maybe it doesn’t even have to be this way.
Vanessa is the co-founder of MenoLabs, a company focused on women’s issues during perimenopause/menopause. She and her friend of 20 years, Danielle Jacobs, created MenoLabs to address what they see as a glaring need in every woman’s life.
Vanessa was prompted to action when, at 44, she began her own transition into menopause. Unsatisfied with the lack of support that women experience during this stage of life, and finding the stereotypes of women in mid-life exasperating and insulting, she met the challenges of this stage of a woman’s life with creativity.
Named a top ten finalist in the Cartier Women’s Initiative, Vanessa believes that for-profits can change the world and make a difference in people’s lives with the same passion for mission used by nonprofits — and in fact, should do so if they want to be truly successful. She is, herself, successful, on a mission to make life better for others and doing it all with authenticity and flair.

The F.A.B. Five according to Vanessa Ford:
Put down your phone—with purpose.
Take daily mini-vacations—no matter where you are, even if only for 5 minutes.
Don’t over-think exercise. Just do it.
De-stress by prioritizing your favorite sensory input; relax through your senses.
Give your body what it needs.

This week’s podcast episode features an interview with Brooke Harley.
Brooke Harley is the CEO and Founder of Class Rebel. Class Rebel is “a modern education company that believes that education is a form of peaceful protest against class inequality. Modern skillsets should be available and affordable to all.” The company believes in longevity of learning; lifelong learning and development as a means to happiness; keeping pace with change; experiencing education live IRL; accessibility of skillsets; learning from being street-smart.
In her early career trajectory, Brooke worked as the Head of Business Development for Lululemon Athletica’s international operations. Prior to Lululemon, she was an M&A attorney. She then transitioned to raising capital as a venture capitalist.
Brooke founded Campfire Capital in 2014. She raised $32 million USD from 50 consumer industry founders, CEOs, and executives and she has evaluated hundreds of early-stage consumers in the consumer space. When distributing funds, Brooke noticed the disparity between entrepreneurs from elite colleges and universities and everyone else. To help close that gap, she created two courses—Fundraising 101 and Angels 101.
Investing and fundraising, like many high-powered and lucrative fields, is a male-dominated space. Brooke challenges the status quo by educating more female entrepreneurs in the venture-capital and angel investing.

It’s important to take care of something/someone other than yourself.

The F.A.B. Five according to Brooke Harley:
Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can come together.
Strong body; strong mind: exercise and keep your body fit.
The quality of your life comes down to the quality of your relationships. Invest in them.
Helping people makes us happy.
It’s important to take care of something/someone other than yourself.

Aisha Bowe is a Bahamian-American aerospace engineer, entrepreneur, and founder of a technology company. She grew up in the United States in a working-class family. At the university, she completed her undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering in 2008, then earned a master's degree in space systems engineering in 2009.
Aisha worked at the Ames Research Center, a major NASA research center in the Flight Trajectory Dynamics and Controls Branch of the Aviation Systems Division. While at NASA, she also served as liaison to the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program, mentored students, held interview workshops and led NASA site tours.
Currently, Aisha is founder and CEO of STEMBoard, a company that solves technology challenges for government and private-sector clients. She is also the creator of the LINGO coding kit which teaches hardware and software design.

This week’s podcast episode features an interview with Gloria Lu and Victoria Fu, the co-founders of Chemist Confessions. Chemist Confessions is a platform that was created to bring transparency and increased accessibility to the skincare space. With their respective degrees in chemical engineering—Victoria’s from The University of California San Diego and Gloria’s from Cornell—they both independently secured a career in the beauty industry. After deciding that neither wanted to pursue a career in traditional engineering, they both separately were granted positions as skincare chemists at L’Oreal, where, serendipitously, they met as cubicle mates. After much thought and consideration, they decided to leave L’Oreal to collaborate on what started as a modest IG account, and has now developed a robust following with over 145k followers, myself included!
