Project Audion Episode 38: I Was a Communist for an FBI
Larry Groebe is back with Project Audion's“I was a Communist for the FBI” was an exciting 1952-1953 Cold-War era radio thriller series that purported to tell the real-life story of Matt Cvetic, who posed as a member of the Communist Party while actually spying for the FBI. Whether mostly true or mostly fantastic, these half hour “radio noir” dramas really illustrate the fears which the Red Menace held for mid-century America.
Many episodes of this taut melodrama can be heard today, but a handful are lost, and Project Audion’s March show is one of them - “Citizens of Nowhere” - now rediscovered and recreated from an original script located in archives in New York City.
Our nationwide cast performs this for the first time in 70 years -- and does a spectacular job, if I do say so myself (and I do.) Here they are, looking properly tense and/or suspicious:

Project Audion Episode 37: Little Ham from Harlem
Larry Groebe is back with Project Audion's look into African American Month. Black poet Langston Hughes, who did write a few special radio programs, also tried to sell a full-fledged Black soap opera. Times being what they were, there were no takers. But his two pilot scripts got stashed away in an archive, and over Christmas I requested and received copies. And so, for the first time, we can hear his proposed show "Little Ham from Harlem" - a comedic soap opera set at a shoe shine stand. Yes, a radio soap opera - but one about Black lives in the 1940s. It's a glimpse at an alternate radio universe with people of color in leading roles - in fact, in ALL roles.

Between Americans Today
Norman Corwin (1910-2011) was the Grand Master of American Radio
Theatre, and his final effort is extraordinarily timely today. In 1941,
this program confronted an America more divided, more polarized, than at
any time since the Civil War -- and this new version, updated for the
21st Century, does the same. This brilliantly fascinating program
reminds us to remember what we have in common, where we agree, and how
we all still stand together -- so we can tone down the anger and deal
with our differences without hatred and violence.
A group of Americans from coast to coast talk about what the United
States means, and try to discover how to deal with their differences
without hatred and violence. This lively, fascinating and extremely
timely production was the last script from Norman Corwin, acclaimed as
the Grand Master of American Radio Theatre.
