Ep. 1969 Piemonte Travel Series: Chiara Boschis | On The Road With Stevie Kim
Welcome to Episode 1969 of On The Road Special Edition. Stevie Kim heads to the the Piedmont region of northern Italy where she meets Chiara Boschis of Azienda Agricola E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis
Discover the history of the ancient estate where the winery is located, the development of this extraordinary family winery, and the winemaking techniques involved in producing its famous Barolo wines.
More about the winery:
The Piras were an ancient family of winemakers, mentioned in parish registers since the 17th century, who also became winemakers between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old school of production, created his wines by assembling grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He maintained that, just as cows must graze on the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards must be chosen for wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop there: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker
carry out the pressing and production by foot without the support of any technical means. Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers since the 18th century, now in its 9th generation. After graduating, Chiara began to follow her passion for wine and her world full time, becoming one of the first female producers of Barolo at the end of the 1980s. By taking care of this "little big house" she brought a breath of renewal to the cellar and
in the production style. Since 2010, Chiara has been joined in the ownership of the company by her brother Giorgio who shares with her the great passion for working in the vineyard and in the cellar, also with thirty years of experience. The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic cultivation, for which the company has been certified since the 2014 harvest. Production is very limited (around 40,000 bottles per year), coming from directly produced grapes.

Beginning in the 8th century B.C., Greek expansion into Italy fostered the spread of winemaking innovation in the South and Sicily, bringing improvements and changes in both viticulture and winemaking. Ep. 1965 Dominic Zucchetto | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 1965 of the Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he is interviewing Dominic Zucchetto. They discuss the aperitivo culture in Italy and the UK, as well as the distillation processes for spirits like Grappa and Gin, particularly from Beniamino Maschio. As the company's export manager, Dominic also shared his insights into the drinks industry.
More about today’s guest:
Born in London but raised in Italy in a small village called Quero near Valdobbiadene, I first entered the wine & spirits world during my latter school years through harvesting in order to earn some money. This initial interest in wine making, followed by my appreciation of the finished product, convinced me to unite what I was studying at school (economics) with this new passion, and I decided that I wanted to become a sales agent, and having had the good fortune of being raised in an English speaking family, it had to be for foreign markets.
After a 5 year experience in a small winery in Valdobbiadene as the only employee where I was involved in the entire production process, therefore acquring great experience and knowledge, it was time to move on and follow my ambition of becoming a sales agent. For the following 6 years I worked in the export department for a larger company that owned not only 2 wineries but also a distillery, and that is where I also started to get passionate about the unique world of Spirits.
Last year I was contacted by the Beniamino Maschio company as they were looking for a new Export Sales Manager and I decided to accept the offer, taking into consideration the career opportunity but also the incredible portoflio that the company offers and that today I am extremely proud to represent.

More about today’s host:
Until 10 years ago, Michele worked as a Computer Engineer in Emilia Romagna, Italy. Despite dedicating his days to a different industry, a profound love for fine wine and cuisine already thrived within him. Most of his spare moments and vacations were spent traversing the Italian regions, delving into local culinary delights and traditional wines. As his passion for wine burgeoned, he enrolled in the Professional Sommelier Diploma course with the Italian Sommelier Association, initially with no intention of pursuing the final exams. However, the allure of wine steadily eclipsed his interest in computers and coding, leading him to complete the AIS Sommelier Diploma in 2013. That same year, he relocated to the UK to pursue an MSc in Wine Business Management at the Royal Agricultural University.
While concluding his Master Dissertation, he seized an opportunity at HAY WINES, a small independent British wine merchants & importers. Eight years on, he remains with the company, now holding the title of Purchasing Director. His primary duties entail crafting purchasing strategies and overseeing imports management.

Ep. 1962 Victoria Cece interviews Carlotta Allegrini | The Next Generation
Welcome to Episode 1962 in which host Victoria Cece interviews Carlotta Allegrini this week on The Next Generation. Victoria Cece chats to winemaker Carlotta Allegrini about her passion for wine and how she balances life between Veneto and Tuscany as a young mother, a brand ambassador and a doctor!
More about today’s guest
Carlotta Mastella Allegrini is Vice-President and Brand Ambassador of the Marilisa Allegrini Group. After studying sciences, she enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine in Florence, while also doing part of her coursework at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating summa cum laude in 2015.
She refers to her choice of university studies as her ‘youthful rebellion’ because, as an independent spirit, she wanted to pursue her own path. Living in Florence over the years, however, has allowed her to spend all her available free time among the vineyards of Bolgheri and Montalcino, learning something new every day and becoming more and more enthusiastic about these projects, which now occupy a special place in her heart as well as being ethical spaces to be protected with the utmost care and attention. Thanks also to her background training, her dream is to create new spaces for hospitality where wine and health, nature and man, art and holistic well-being can all come together: places where balance and peace are generated in the people who stay, live and work here.

Ep. 1957 Enotourism- a Social Media Journey to #1 with Dr. Laura Catena, Stevie Kim | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 1957, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into- Enotourism- a Social Media Journey to #1 with Dr. Laura Catena, Stevie Kim
Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023.
wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide.
About today’s session
The Catena Zapata winery was founded by an Italian immigrant to Argentina, Nicola Catena, in 1902. In many ways, the winery is a traditional family winery with a family member at the helm for four generations. However, the wine journey of current Managing Director Dr. Laura Catena has been anything but traditional. Laura started her professional career as a medical doctor in the United States and has practiced both medicine and winemaking for 25 years. She credits her father Nicolás, a Doctor in economics, with teaching her everything she knows about making wine and running a business. When Laura started working with her father, she asked him to explain what people meant by “marketing.” Her father answered: “Laurita, it is hard to prove and sustain a #1 position over time, but when you do something different, you are most likely to win. Always focus on differentiation.” Today, Laura thinks that authenticity is the key to differentiation. During her session, she will show us - through a series of social media moments - how in 2023 the family winery, Catena Zapata, made it to the #1 World’s Best Vineyard position.

Guest Bio -
Margherita Letrari is the third generation of the Letrari winery, she is 22 and is currently finishing her studies in marketing and communication in Bologna, to then enter completely into the winery.
Letrari was founded in 1976 by Leonello Letrari, Margherita’s grandfather, who was one of the major entities in the Trentino wine history. He started in the 1950s with one of the firsts bordolese red wine to then found, twenty years later, the family company together with her wife Maria Vittoria. In 1987 Lucia Letrari entered the winery as oenologist, as her father was, and is now the leader of the company.
Margherita chose to follow her mother’s path for passion; she grew up in the wine world and slowly fell in love with it, so that at 18 she decided to partially enter the winery and learn as much as she could. So much that, by now, her (and of course her mother Lucia) are the faces everyone thinks of when thinking of Letrari.

More about the winery:
The Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares (250 acres) of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The vinery produces a Barbaresco D.O.C.G., a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption.
In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles

Ep. 1944 Leonardo Bellaccini | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 1944 of the Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he is interviewing Leonardo Bellaccini. San Felice is an historic wine estate in Chianti Classico and Leonardo shares its rich story, from the Etruscans to the mezzadria, and about the importance of sustainable and regenerative viticulture to produce an outstanding range of wines that can be enjoyed in the Borgo San Felice 5-star Relais & Chateau wine resort with Michelin star restaurant.
More about today’s guest:
“San Felice encompasses three of Tuscany’s most famous estates that regularly appear in the Wine Spectator's top 100. We have an annual production of around one million bottles (1,025,000 of Chianti, 80,000 of Brunello, 40,000 of Rosso di Montalcino and 55,000 of Bolgheri), divided into16 labels, made entirely from estate-owned grapes.
Our winemaker, Leonardo Bellaccini, has pioneered many unique practices. Importantly he sees distinctive characteristics in each of San Felice’s undulating slopes and he treats each vine within the vineyard individually. Having identified five macro-areas Leonardo and his team has planted the grape varieties which thrive in the specific geography and soil.”

Ep. 1935 Stacy Buchanan | Voices With Cynthia Chaplin
Welcome to Episode 1935, in which Cynthia Chaplin interviews Stacy Buchanan in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. Stacy is the founder of Blood of Gods magazine in Washington State, an international print publication that combines wine and heavy metal music!
More about today’s guest:
Stacy Buchanan, Publisher
Part publisher, producer, and event promoter, Stacy Buchanan is a one-man hype machine, with a preacher’s passion to bridge not hearts to god, but wine to heavy metal music. His biannual cult heavy metal and wine ‘zine, Blood of Gods, launched in Spring 2020, is his testimony—his annual Merrymaking, a festival of art, music, and wine in downtown Walla Walla, Washington, the revival tent.
By any measure, he’s succeeding, with a gift for uniting people and ideas across backgrounds and industries, attracting awards, accolades, and pilgrims along the way. While in Walla Walla for the inaugural Merrymaking, Paul Grieco of famed NYC wine bar Terroir proclaimed, “This is the crowd and demographic the wine industry is jonesing for.”
Other buzz includes an induction to Wine Enthusiast’s “Future 40” and Imbibe magazine’s “Imbibe 75” lists, the latter dubbing Buchanan a person who "will inspire the way we all drink in the year to come," among notable nods from Decibel, Somm Journal, SIP, and more.

Ep. 1937 Get to know Right Bank Bordeaux | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 1937, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into Get to know Right Bank Bordeaux with Georgie Hindle DipWSET and Claire Dawson
A tasting of three wines that give an overview of Bordeaux’s Right Bank for those who want to know more about this famous region but don’t know where to start. A region as big as Bordeaux, with its renowned châteaux and myriad styles can often be a bit intimidating to newcomers and wine lovers alike. There are 65 different appellations covering 100,000 hectares with terroirs, vintage variation and estate styles all playing a part. This session aims to give the audience three options when it comes to choosing a bottle of Bordeaux based on quality and price; good (affordable), better (mid-range/medium priced), and best (money no object).
Bordeaux wine is known for its longevity, but winemakers are increasingly looking to make wines in a more accessible way when young - the choice that’s therefore available caters to all tastes and spending levels.
Young and ‘affordable’ wines often display primary fruit flavours, are crisp, juicy and fresh and are best consumed within two to three years of bottling. Mid-priced wines are often barrel aged and offer the potential for further maturation. They will present both primary and secondary fruit flavours with evidence of oak, present tannins, a smooth mid palate and long finish. Wines in this list are best consumed between 5-10 years following the vintage. The next level of wines up, are usually more intense and concentrated with powerful tannins, larger structures and long ageing abilities. They are aged longer in barrel and will continue to evolve well past 20 years of age.

Ep. 1933 Erin Kirschenmann | Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo
Welcome to Episode 1933 on Italian Wine Podcast, Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo. In today's episode, she interviews Erin Kirschenmann . Erin speaks about what makes for a compelling story for a wine publication: successes and failures, stories and challenges, and data.
More about today’s guest:
“As Managing Editor for Wine Business Monthly, the leading print publication for the wine industry, it’s my job to write and edit articles on the business of wine, manage deadlines and budgets, coach and guide freelancers, and develop sessions for our conferences. I also have the incredible job of speaking at industry symposia and judging wine competitions around the world, emceeing and moderating at conferences, and guest lecturing at local colleges.
While stringing thoughts and paragraphs together has always come naturally to me, I know that’s not the case for everyone. I believe that everyone has a story to tell and with the right questions or guidance, anyone can be a writer. My talent is in making that happen, cheering on budding writers and ensuring every piece is the best it can be.
In my spare time, you can find me on the softball field, hiking the trails of Northern California, baking far more than any one person can eat, or curling up on the couch with my dog and a new book.“

Ep. 1931 Victoria Cece interviews Margherita Sgubin | The Next Generation
Welcome to Episode 1931 in which host Victoria Cece interviews Margherita Sgubin this week on The Next Generation. They discuss the wines & cusines of Margherita’s hometown in Friuli Venezia Giulia, her aspirations following her wine studies in Burgundy, and her plans to implement her newfound knowledge in her family's winery business. Additionally, they share their perspectives on the wine world from the standpoint of their respective generations, Gen Z and Millenial.
More about today’s guest
Margherita represents the third generation of Ferruccio Sgubin Winery in Collio, Friuli-Venezia Giulia. After completing her studies in Business Management & Administration, she started to work at her family’s winery, and it was during this time that she discovered her passion for wines. In fact, it was not written that she would have ended up there as she has always considered to keep different options open.
It was by taking part to different wine fairs and events, meeting with wine people, the sharing of experiences and opinions that triggered her curiosity and made her wanted to learn more. Therefore, a few months later she moved to France and started her MSc program in Wine Management in Burgundy. Spending one year of her life there was a priceless experience not only in terms of the knowledge gained, but also because of the opportunities of meeting other people from the industry such as producers, professionals, and other wine lovers. Learning about different point of views, perspectives, and approaches to wine was like putting all pieces together, and contributed to build her idea of wine and helped her to take awareness of the challenges related to the sector.
Even if the ultimate goal is that of returning home to work in her family’s winery, she is currently exploring opportunities to gain experience elsewhere, particularly in the fields of marketing and communication. She indeed envisions herself taking charge of conveying an authentic image of their company, making sure it reflects the values and philosophy behind it effectively.

Ep. 1921 Victoria Cece interviews Michela Adriano | The Next Generation
Welcome to Episode 1921 in which host Victoria Cece interviews Michela Adriano this week on The Next Generation. They discuss Michela’s upbringing and her experiences working in her family's winery (Marco e Vittorio Adriano) in Piemonte, as well as the valuable lessons she has learned along the way.
More about today’s guest
Michela Adriano was born in 1995 in Alba, the capital of Langhe, and grew up in the middle of these charming hills. Raised within the Adriano family, she absorbed a profound passion for winemaking and absorbed the values associated with the wines crafted by the family. Michela represents the third generation of this family heritage. Her grandparents initiated this adventure by selling grapes, while her father, Vittorio, and uncle, Marco, ventured into making their first bottle of wine in 1994. Michela joined the family winery in 2014, marking her dedication to continuing the family tradition. Her mission now is to honor the sacrifices her family made to establish this vineyard, craft exceptional wines, and cherish the rich history and hard work that have shaped this enchanting and magical wine region.

Victoria Cece is a food and beverage storyteller whose curiosity is somewhere deep in a bowl of pasta or a bottle of wine.
