His greatest passions. After graduation, he immediately started to work at Vietti and discover the wine world. Those were challenging years because there were not so many people working at the Winery. This meant going to the vineyards, following vinification, tastings, winery registers and documents, investments, purchases, sales and rental contracts. He has worked side by side with Mario Cordero and Luca Currado and consolidated his responsibilities and skills. In 2016 the Krause family purchased the Winery but things did not change much. The philosophy has always been to keep focusing on tradition and on high quality wines.  This job requires experience, because every vintage is different. You learn every year and make mistakes Technical skills without experience are useless.  What binds him to this great Winery is something that goes beyond a simple professional reason. It is something that today stimulates him to continue to do well and grow treasuring everything that he has learned and absorbed in these 22 years. Welcome to episode 2013 of the Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he is interviewing Angelo Silvestro of Pietradolce. They talk about the territory, cuisine, and vines of Castiglione di Sicilia, highlighting the wines of Pietradolce. More about today’s winery: Pietradolce was founded in 2005 in Solicchiata, a small village a few kilometers from Castiglione di Sicilia, on the Northern slope of Mount Etna. The family Faro has been always committed in preserving and showing the beauty of the teritory, so the love for it, as well as the respect for the ecosystem and the traditions represent the core of Pietradolce's philosophy. The estate owns 30 hectares of small plots located within Rampante, Zottorinoto, Santo Spirito e Feudo di Mezzo contradas, in a range between 700 and 950 mt. above sea level. The soils are rather stony, with light sandy loam rich, able to produce unique and elegant wines. Pietradolce cultivates just indigenous varieties, the main characters of Etna's history: Nerello Mascalese and Carricante. The vines are coltivated through the traditional bush vine system “Alberello Etneo”. From the small prephilloxera single-plots Pietardolce obtains its prime wines. Theese wines arte vinified in concrete tanks before the ageing in 700 litres french oak. The grand crus Barbagalli and Sant'andrea rapresent the highest and purest expression of the volcano. The new winery is the result of a project in which art and artisanship create a contemporary style environment, strongly linked to the territory. Volcanic rock, iron, wood, and vineyard soil are the materials used for the interiors of the wine cellar, barrel room, and tasting room. Inside there are some pieces of art, works by local artisans and Italian artists such as Alfio Bonanno, exponent of the Land Art and Giorgio Vigna, capable of shaping materials as glass, and steel. These works enrich the dialougue with the teritory. They were wood carpenters. In 1972 they bought 25 ha that over the years became the reference in the production of Verdicchio di Matelica. Today Mauro and Tito Bisci, Giuseppe's sons, own the company. The estate is farmed organic since 2015 (certified since 2019), with 18ha under Verdicchio and 2ha under Sangiovese and Merlot. It produces around 140 thousand bottles (120K are from Verdicchio). It is located in mid-hill at 320 to 370 meters above sea level, slightly sloping and in prevalence exposed to the south-west. Aroldo Bellelli, the oenologist and nowadays part of the company, is a key figure in the company. He started as a young agronomist in 1992 and took over winemaking in 2006. Gabriele Brugnoni, export manager, since 2016 when the company, after a long collaboration with the De Grazia group, decided to have a more direct control of all their markets and distribution. Wine had an important symbolic and cultural value for the Greeks, and was at the heart of Dionysian mysticism. During this masterclass, Professor Attilio Scienza will explore these topics and their legacy. In the vineyards she learned the life cycle of the vines, in the cellar she tasted small sips of wine to understand the differences between the varieties. She then realised she was really interested in this world when, on attending university, she discovered organic agriculture and with its methods a new authentic way to be in close contact with her vines, thus turning cultivation into a bond of reciprocal respect.  Despite her commitment and passion, the first impact was hard: the first organic harvest went lost, but this did not discourage her. Marina continued on her way with determination, pursuing her ideas and her choice over the years.  So we come to the present day: Punset is now considered one of the pioneers of organic growing in Piedmont and a point of reference for the village of Neive and its area, thanks to more than 30 years of experience and to excellent results.  In addition to her commitment in  the vineyards, at the end of the ‘80s Marina went to the States to gain experience in the marketing field, which was key to her becoming manager of her own winery, thus leading it to become one of the top producers of the area.  Connect Website www.punset.com _______________________________ Let's keep in touch! In this episode Marc chats to Peter and Henri Greig about the history and development of Pipers Farm, their 52-acre family farm in Devon, discussing their commitment to biodiversity and ethical farming practices, the unique landscape of the Devon hills, and the direct relationships they have forged with their customers and neighbouring farmers. Pipers Farm was established in 1989, and has since been a destination for meat that is produced sustainably and in harmony with nature. Today the company employs around 50 people from the local area who work across the Butchery, Fulfilment Centre and at Pipers Farm HQ, all based in Devon. The company works directly with 50 small-scale, family farms who produce grass fed beef, lamb, and mutton, properly free range chicken, pigs, ducks and Christmas poultry, and wild venison and game during the season. Alongside the meat, they work with small scale fisherman catching sustainable seafood out of Brixham harbour, overseen by Mitch Tonks at Rockfish, and they sell an ever-growing range of ethical and sustainable dairy, artisan cheese, bread, pulses, small batch jams and chutneys. Their mission remains the same: to produce food that their customers can trust completely while providing a future for small-scale, family farms working in harmony with nature. By focusing on each individual farm and the opportunities their land presents, they are able to support these businesses in diversifying their operations and provide a guaranteed and simple route to market. Welcome to Episode 1981 in which host McKenna Cassidy interviews Lorenzo Fornaini this week on The Next Generation.  During the interview, the young winemaker Lorenzo talks about his experience working along with Andrea Franchetti in both his wineries Tenuta di Trinoro in Val d’Orcia, where they make Bordeaux blend style wines being the soil reminiscent of that of Saint Emilion, and Passopisciaro on Etna, where the wines are the true expression of the different “contrade". According to Lorenzo, Etna is so popular because it meets the contemporary taste, just like the Cabernet Franc from Tenuta di Trinoro: the modern consumer looks for freshness and drinkability. More about today’s guest I was born on 1995 in the province of Pisa; Ponsacco is the name of the town. On my path in the world of wine, I studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Pisa. I experienced a few vintages in the Pisan hills area, Palaia-Terricciola, near my home. In 2017, I faced my first harvest at Tenuta di Trinoro, in Tuscany. It was supposed to be just an experience to then decide whether to continue my studies or leave Italy, but at the end of the 2017 harvest, Andrea Franchetti asked me if I would like to start something together and stay at Trinoro. The decision was already made. Gradually, I grew with his visions and my approach. After Trinoro, I started going down to Etna and discovering that fantastic world as well, and now I really enjoy working with both wineries. I can tell you that I am very happy to still be working here today and helping to continue what Andrea Franchetti created. I owe all my rapid growth to this man, who was a visionary and managed to make a significant impact on the wine world in just a few years. He began coming to the Barolo for harvests in 2007, working for 2-3 months with a different winemaker each vintage to learn the subtleties of each producer’s methods. In 2011, he moved to the area permanently, first working in the cellar of Luciano Sandrone and then at the Bartolo Mascarello and Cavallotto wineries. 2012 saw his first production of an experimental quantity of wine from a 1000 square meter vineyard on the Pernanno hill in Castiglione Falletto. In 2015 his vineyard holdings expanded enough to incorporate as an Azienda Agricola and commercial production of Barolo began with 2800 bottles made in that first 2015 vintage year. In 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo was added to the production. Currently the winery farms nearly 5 hectares of land and produces Barolo, Langhe Nebbiolo and a small amount of Chinato. Max production for the small M8 cantina is 12,000 bottles Barolo and 12,000 bottles Langhe Nebbiolo each vintage.
