Episode # 219 Superbad with Sophie Davies and Barbara Mendes-Jorge from It's an S Pod Thing & Over/underrated music podcast
Barbara (Over/underated: a music podcast with Babs and Fran) and Sophie (It’s An S Pod Thing!) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Babs choice Superbad. Superbad is a 2007 coming of age comedy starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as school friends Seth, Evan and Fogel (McLovin), directed by Greg Mottola and produced by Judd Apatow. Determined to lose their virginity before going to college Seth and Evan get invited to Jules party and promise to buy the booze with Fogel’s fake McLovin ID. Of course nothing goes to plan and McLovin is kidnapped by two police officers (Bill Haded and Seth Rogen) while Seth and Evan end up at a bizarre house party in a quest to secure the booze that will impress the girls enough for them to sleep together. It’s difficult to view Superbad’s main narrative of getting girls drunk enough to sleep with Seth and Evan and the endless stream of homophobic jokes as being harmless and of it’s time - it’s questionable how funny it was is 2007. That said Jonah Hill is still brilliant and there are some painfully accurate moments of teenage male friendship to just about redeem it. [supsystic-tables id=230] In light of being viewed in 2020 scores for Superbad from Flixwatcher and guests were pretty even and everyone was in agreement - averaging a three for recommendability to score 3.25 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Superbad? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode 218 Shrek 2 with Zachary Fortais-Gomm and Elizabeth Campbell from Realms of Peril and Glory
Liz Campbell and Zach Fortais-Gomm from Realms of Peril and Glory (actual play podcast launching 18 August) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Zach’s choice Shrek 2.
Shrek 2 sees the return of Mike Myers Shrek, his newlywed Fiona (Cameron Diaz), Donkey (Eddie Murphy) plus new additions of Puss in Boots (Antonia Banderas) and Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders).
Shrek, Fiona and Donkey head to the kingdom of Far Far Away to attend a ball thrown by Fiona’s parents to celebrate their wedding. Shocked to see their daughter and son-in-law as ogres they predictably end up all falling out. Elsewhere the Fairy Godmother is displeased her son Prince Charming did not marry Fiona as agreed by her father and sets out a plan for revenge.
Shrek, like its predecessor, parodies other films based on fairy tales, features references to American popular culture and features an endless soundtrack of popular songs and cover versions.
[supsystic-tables id=229]
Feelings for Shrek ranged from very high - Zach and Liz - to less engaged - Helen. Flixwatcher and guests were in agreement though on engagement though and Shrek 2 scores 3.40 overall.

Episode # 217 Deep Impact with Jake Cunningham and Michael Leader from Ghibliotheque
Jake Cunningham and Michael Leder (Ghibliotheque - A Podcast About Studio Ghibli and Ghibliotheque: The Unofficial Guide to the Movies of Studio Ghibli) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Jake’s choice Deep Impact.
Deep Impact is a 1997 science-fiction disaster movie starring Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood and Morgan Freeman. Teenage amateur astronomer Leo Beiderman (Wood) spots an unidentified light in the sky and sends it to Dr. Marcus Wolf who recognises it as a comet on a direct path to earth. On his way to sound the alarm his car crashes. One year later, journalist Jenny Lerner (Leoni) accidentally uncovers ELE (Extinction Level Event) not Ellie as she first thinks. Tom Beck (Freeman), the President of the United States announces the news to the world that the comet is on course to impact the Earth in roughly one year and could cause humanity's extinction.
[supsystic-tables id=228]
Is Deep Impact the last greatest blockbuster of the 20th century? Cruelly barged out of the Box Office by the louder, brasher Armageddon, Deep Impact has possibly aged much better and hits more on an emotional level. It scores highly across recommendability, loses some points on the small screen to score an exact 4 overall.
What do you guys think? Have you seen Deep Impact? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 216 Tremors with Tiberius Hardy and Cam Smith from SpyHards Podcast
Tremors is the 1990s (not 80s!) monster horror comedy starring Kevin Bacon as Valentine and Fred Ward as Earl, two handymen working in Perfection, Nevada. Fed up with dead end jobs decide to leave but on their way out of town discover a local resident Edgar, dead at the top of electric pylon - apparently scared to dead. They later discover the remains local Shepherd Fred and find themselves joining forces with the remaining residents in a battle against giant deadly land worms. [supsystic-tables id=227] Tremors excels in not taking itself too serious and the general census is the level of gross and gore falls on the right side of good bad, not bad. This was a first time watch for Scott and he was not disappointed - giving it a straight five for recommendability. Scores for Tremors were high across all Flixwatcher categories to score 3.88 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Tremors? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 215 Fury with Jay Ludgrove and Tony Gordon from GLProductions
GLProUK’s Tony Gordon (How To Write A Tune, Bones Knows) and Jay Ludgrove (The Jaily Show) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Tony’s choice Fury. Fury is a 2014 war drama written and directed by David Ayer it stars Brad Pitt as Don "War Daddy" Collier, Shia LaBoeuf as Boyd "Bible" Swan, Logan Lerman as Norman "Machine" Ellison, Michael Peña as Trini "Gordo" Garcia and Jon Bernthal as Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis. Set in 1945, the Western Allied invasion of Germany meets fanatical Schutzstaffel resistance - War Daddy and his crew are leading the defence in their tank, affectionately named ‘Fury’. While the storyline is fictional, Fury and War Daddy are authentic - American tank commander Staff Sergeant Lafayette G. "War Daddy" Pool’s experience influenced Pitt’s War Daddy and was filmed in the UK due to the availability of functional Sherman tanks to be borrowed. Heavy on machismo and violence Fury doesn’t shy away from the realities of war and the Second World War specifically (dead horses being eaten). [supsystic-tables id=226] Fury opens with Brad Pitt stabbing a German in the eye - if that is your thing then you’ll probably enjoy Fury - if it’s not then maybe give this one a miss. The scores for Fury reflect this and it scores a very respectable 3.98 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Fury? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 214 No Country for Old Men with Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from Best Bits Pod
Will Collins (screenwriter for Wolfwalkers) and Kevin Lehane (screenwriter for Grabbers) from The Best Bits podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Will’s choice No Country for Old Men. No Country for Old Men is the multi award-winning (Best Picture, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars) 2007 neo-Western crime thriller from Joel and Ethan Coen. Based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy it stars Tommy Lee Jones as a local sheriff Ed Tom Bell, Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss - a Vietnam vet who stumbles across a large amount of money from a drug deal on bad and a terrifying Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh - a psychopath hitman hired to track down the missing drug deal money. [supsystic-tables id=225] No Country for Old Men is violent, detached, bleak but also absurdly funny in places and widely considered the Coen’s greatest achievement in cinema. Less easy to recommend to people than say Fargo, Flixwatcher and guests score No Country for Old Man highly on recommendability with (caveats) but low on the small score to give an overall score of 3.96. What do you guys think? Have you seen No Country for Old Men? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 213 Close Encounters of the Third Kind with Paul Breen and Ben Mercer from Have You Scene This Podcast
Paul and Ben from Have You Scene This? Podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Paul’s choice Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Close Encounters of the Third Kind - The Directors Cut is the 1977 Steven Spielberg sci fi classic starring Richard Dreyfus as Roy Neary, the everyman who after a close encounter with an alien spaceship becomes obsessed with the Devils Tower, has a breakdown that cause his wife to to leave him and sets out on a quest to join the aliens. For a film about aliens, actual aliens are mainly absent for the majority of the film and the main focus is on Neary and the French scientist Claude Lacombe, played by French New Wave auteur François Truffaut, as he chases mysterious encounters across the world. Close Encounters features many key Spielberg themes, Light as mystery, ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, John Williams theme, fractured family, absent fathers and some classic child peril. Despite its record breaking box office returns on its release and critical acclaim it hasn’t ingrained itself in cinematic history in the same way say Jaws, E.T or Jurassic Park have. [supsystic-tables id=224] This is reflected on the Flixwatcher scores, even with some top marks from Paul and a decent recommendability, Close Encounters of the Third Kind only scores 3.23 overall What do you guys think? Episode # 212 Wild Child with Caris Rianne and Neha from Not Having It All podcast
Caris and Neha from Not Having It All podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Caris’ choice Wild Child. Wild Child is a 2008 teen comedy romance film starring Emma Roberts as the Wild Child Poppy, a spoilt LA brat who is sent to an English boarding school to straighten her out and teach her valuable life lessons. Natasha Richardson also makes her last film appearance as the headmistress Mrs Kingsley and Alex Pettyfer plays the love interest. Wild Child is a mix of a typical fish out of water film, Poppy struggles with British food, locations and finds an enemy within seconds of arriving and a story of friendship with bonding over secondhand clothes shopping. Not only is Wild Child a crime against the chip butty it neither works as a comedy or a romance particularly well. There are some surprising plot turns - involving a completely unexpected act of arson. [supsystic-tables id=223] Despite Caris’ enthusiasm for Wild Child, Flixwatcher and Neha were unconvinced and scores were low across all the categories, apart from small screen score to give an overall score of 2.40. What do you guys think? Have you seen Wild Child? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 211 Army of the Dead with Petros Patsilivas and Ariane Anantaputri from The Breadcrumbs Collective
Ariane Anantaputri (A Drip Town Lemory Mane: The Podcast) and Petros Patsilivas (Caged In: Coppola Connections) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Ariane’s choice Army of the Dead. Army of the Dead is the 2021 Zack Snyder zombie heist action horror film. Based on a story he created and a sort of possible sequel to his remake of 2004’s Dawn of the Dead. This time the city of Las Vegas is infected by a new breed of the undead after a collision with an army convey carrying a zombie picked up from Area 51. In an attempt to control the zone, a wall of container blocks is built and a countdown to a nuclear explosion is set. A team of mercenaries is put together by a nefarious casino owner to drop into Las Vegas and recover $200 million from his casino before it is nuked. It quickly becomes apparent that money may not be the motivation for this mission. Army of the Dead’s runtime is two hours and 28 minutes - the plot of Army of the Dead runs closer to about an hour and 30 mins max. Somewhere in it is a fairly entertaining heist countdown with zombies and a zombie tiger but it is bogged down with subplots around alpha zombies, unnecessary father/daughter reconciliation and some vague commentary of refugees. [supsystic-tables id=222] Unsurprising that Army of the Dead receives mixed reviews for recommendability and even less surprising is its low scoring on repeat viewing and small screen score. Army of the Dead scores 2.54 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Army of the Dead? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 210 Enola Holmes with Claer Barrett and Patrick Mills from Financial Times
Claer Barrett (FT Money Clinic podcast) and Patrick Mills (Pages of Hackney bookshop) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Claer’s choice Enola Holmes. Enola Holmes is a 2020 young adult mystery adventure film, based on the novels of the same name, about the teenage sister of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Enola Holmes, delightfully played by Millie Bobby Brown, is left literally alone when her mother Eudoria Holmes (Helena Bonham Carter) mysteriously disappears on the day of her sixteenth birthday. Her brothers, Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin) arrive and decide to send Enola to finishing school, determined to discover what has happened to her mother, she escapes dressed as a boy and heads to London. Enola Holmes is perfect family home viewing, not especially taxing on the brain and just about justifies its two hours runtime. Originally planned for a full cinema release but due to the pandemic it instead went to Netflix and was it’s biggest first day opening Netflix title of 2020 - expect sequels. [supsystic-tables id=221] Enola Holmes scores generously across most of the Flixwatcher categories, let down a little by low repeat viewing (saving it for the sequels!) and scores a respectable 3.88 overall. Daryl Bär (Sudden Double Deep podcast, Is Paul Dano Ok?) and Matt Brothers from (Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast and also Is Paul Dano Ok?) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Daryl’s choice Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Falling Down is a 1993 drama/action film from director Joel Schumacher starring Michael Douglas, in probably a career best as William "D-Fens" Foster. An angry, unemployed, volatile man on a mission to “go home” as he makes a journey across LA leaving a trail of violence while cop-on-his-last-day-on-the-job Martin Prendergast (Robert Duvall) is trying to stop him. Released in 1993 it was misunderstood - read racist as D-FENs targets are African-American, Latino and Korean but watched through 2021 eyes has a lot to say about the MAGA white angry male Trump supporter - blaming problems on immigrants and refuses to see himself as the problem. Scores [supsystic-tables id=216] Falling Down scores highly across all Flixwatcher scoring categories - a fair few years might have passed since Flixwatcher and guests watched this at a far too young age (why were we allowed to watch these films as children?!!?) to give Falling Down an overall score of 4.41. Highly recommended. Enjoyed this episode? Check out episodes 4 - The Talented Mr Ripley and 12 - Jet Li’s The One for more Jay and Tony film chat!

Episode # 204 Only The Animals with Patrick Mills from Pages of Hackney bookshop and Claer Barrett from FT Money Clinic podcast
Patrick Mills (Pages of Hackney bookshop) and Claer Barrett (FT Money Clinic podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Patrick’s choice Only the Animals. Only the Animals is a 2019 French murder mystery black comedy from director Dominik Moll. A tale of coincidence, mistaken identity and loneliness collide in the lives of our five central characters - Michel, Alice, Joesph, Marion, Armand who are all connected to Evelyne. The story jumps around from the heat and intensity of the Ivory Coast to the snowy and desolate remote French mountains and slowly reveals the chain of events that lead to the disappearance of Evelyne from different perspectives. As the story evolves the absurdity of mistaken identity and pure coincidence is both ridiculous and completely believable. Powered by engaging performances, particularly from veteran French character actor Denis Ménochet and some dark comic moments the near two hour run time zips along nicely. Scores [supsystic-tables id=215] The non-linear narrative storytelling technique hardly feels fresh now but Only the Animals does it well enough to keep the viewer guessing and despite the subtitles is engaging. Only the Animals does well across all Flixwatcher categories, apart from repeat viewing, to score a respectable 4.01 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Only the Animals? Episode #203 Center Stage with Helen O’Hara from Empire Podcast and magazine and Helen Zaltzman from The Allusionist, Answer Me This! and Veronica Mars Investigations.
Helen Zaltzman (The Allusionist, Answer Me This! and Veronica Mars Investigations) and Helen O’Hara (Empire Podcast and magazine) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Helen Z’s choice Center Stage. Center Stage 2000 teen drama about a group of young dancers from different backgrounds that join a prestigious (fictional) ballet school in New York City. Directed by Nicholas (Madness of King George) Hytner and stars a mix of actors and dancers. Out of the main characters who are dancers, four are professional ballet dancers (Amanda Schull (her debut) Ethan Stiefel, Sascha Radetsky, and Julie Kent), one is a professional figure skater (Ilia Kulik), one had ballet training (Zoe Saldana in her debut also), and two were actors with no ballet training (Susan May Pratt and Shakiem Evans). Body doubles were used for many of the major dance sequences. Peter Gallagher also stars as the company director and choreographer. Center Stage is essentially a high school drama set in a ballet school. Nothing is ambiguous and if you missed anything then it is all summarised - through dance - in the dance finale. The brutal side of ballet - no pizza and bad feet, Mandy Moore and bland boyfriends feature heavily - if that’s your thing then you’ll love it.
Scores [supsystic-tables id=214] If it’s not then you’ll probably not enjoy it - this caveat was heavily reflected in the scores with an average of three for recommendability which ends up giving an overall score of 3.34. What do you guys think? Have you seen Center Stage? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #202 Booksmart with Robbie Collin and Ben Bailey Smith from wittertainment
Ben Bailey Smith (aka Doc Brown, Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review) and Robbie Collin (The Independent and also Kermode and Mayo's Film Review) and return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Ben’s choice Booksmart. Booksmart is the 2019 coming-of-age teen buddy comedy and directorial debut of actress Olivia Wilde. It stars Beanie Feldstein as Molly and Kaitlyn Dever as Amy, two best friends and high school seniors, both high achievers they realise the night before graduation they should have partied more. Determined to spend their last night of school partying and being wild. It would be derivate to say Booksmart is the female Superbad, Molly and Amy’s friendship feels much deeper and there is less emphasis on the gross-out comedy. Its strengths lie in its editing - fast and hard - and the chemistry between its two leads and it’s always great to see Lisa Kudrow in anything. That said, Booksmart often feels like several movies at once - partly due to it having four writers - and the amount of characters mean that the majority of the supporting cast feels underdeveloped and many of the subplots could have been cut.
Scores [supsystic-tables id=212] Booksmart isn’t for everyone but it has plenty of appeal to a teen audience and anyone who was born after 1995. Scoring generously across all the categories gives Booksmart an overall score of 3.98. What do you guys think? Have you seen Booksmart? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #201 The Dawn Wall with Will Roe from Stories of Our Times Podcast and Ben Williams from Rokkwood Audio
Will Roe from The Times & Sunday Times - Who Killed CJ Davis? and Ben Williams from Rokkwood Audio return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Will’s choice The Dawn Wall. The Dawn Wall is a 2017 documentary about free climber Tommy Caldwell who, along with Kevin Jorgeson completed the first free climb of El Capitan in 2015. This was a 19 day climb and is considered one of the hardest climbs in history. The documentary is fairly standard in that we start with young Tommy in the Colorado Rockies learning to climb, then in a bizarre turn of events in 2000, Tommy and his then girlfriend Beth Rodden were captured in Kyrgyzstan by rebels. After returning from the traumatic kidnapping Tommy loses a finger in an accident and his marriage breaks down - it’s then he decides to take on El Capitan. Scores [supsystic-tables id=212]
The Dawn Wall is a story of commitment and determination - plus a lesson in pooping on a cliff face. Not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights! Recommendability for The Dawn Wall is pretty high, lower scores for repeat viewing and small screen (the documentary curse strikes again!) give an overall score of 3.60. What do you guys think? Ep #200 The Karate Kid with Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from Best Bits Pod
Kevin Lehane (screenwriter for Grabbers) and Will Collins (screenwriter for Wolfwalkers) from The Best Bits podcast join Flixwatcher to review Kevin’s choice The Karate Kid for episode 200! The Karate Kid is a 1984 martial arts cult classic written by Robert Mark (Taken/Transporter) Kamen and directed by John G. (Rocky) Avildsen. 16-year-old Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and his kind hearted single mum Lucille move from New Jersey to LA and while Daniel makes friends with Ali (Elizabeth Shue) by doing so he creates an enemy in her ex-boyfriend Johnny. Johnny just happens to be a student of the Cobra Kai dojo and to take on the bullies Danny learns karate with the help of the eccentric Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). Is The Karate Kid more like Rocky or more like Dirty Dancing? Does it have an appropriate amount of karate for a film called The Karate Kid or is there too much romance? Who will give the lowest recommendability score - film chooser Kevin or first time watcher Helen? So many questions you’ll have to listen to find the answers. Scores [supsystic-tables id=209] The scores for The Karate Kid were completely unpredictable, scoring quite low overall for engagement (owing to its close to two hour run time) but more generously for small screen score givens an overall score of a very respectable 4.02. Ep #199 Zodiac with Fil and Jonathan from The Pod Charles Cinecast – the official podcast of The Prince Charles Cinema.
Jonathan and Fil from the The Pod Charles Cinecast - the official podcast of The Prince Charles Cinema return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jonathan’s choice Zodiac. Zodiac is the 2007 David Fincher drama based on the real-life Zodiac Killer that not only killed but also terrorised the San Francisco police and the Chronicle. James Vanderbilt’s fantastic screenplay is based on the 1986 non-fiction book of the same name by Robert Graysmith. It stars stars Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch, Chloë Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall and Dermot Mulroney. Ruffalo plays Inspector Dave (real-life Bullitt/Dirty Harry) Toschi as the main police investigator with Edwards’ Insp. Bill Armstrong and Gyllenhaal plays Graysmith, political cartoonist turned investigator and Downey Jr plays Paul Avery, crime reporter at the Chronicle. Spoiler, the Zodic Killer was never caught, Fincher’s Zodiac is meticulously faithful to the real-life murders and attacks but less of you usual whodunnit and more an exploration of obsession (Graysmith is a mix of Boy Scout and detective on the side) and character, both Toschi and Avery’s lives become consumed by the Zodiac. Character and ambiguity are favoured over action scenes and machismo. Scores [supsystic-tables id=207] Despite the run time of two hours plus Zodiac still scores pretty highly across all categories and near the top of Flixwatcher and guests top Fincher films and scores a very impressive 4.49 overall. Iszi Lawrence (Terrible Lizards, The British Museum Membercast) and Simon Dunn (setisoppO podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Iszi’s choice Galaxy Quest. Galaxy Quest is a 1999 comedy homage and parody of sci-fi of the 70s and Star Trek and its fans. It stars stars Tim Allen as Commander Taggart/Jason, Sigourney Weaver as Lieutenant Tawny Madison/Gewn, Alan Rickman as Dr. Lazarus, Tony Shalhoub as Tech Sergeant Chen, Sam Rockwell as Crewman #6 and Daryl Mitchell as Lieutenant Laredo/Tommy collectively the cast of 1980s tv sci-fi show - Galaxy Guest. While at a sci-fi convention the group are visited by aliens (in human form) and believing the crew to be real enlist their help to fight of the evil alien Roth'h'ar Sarris who has destroyed their home planet. You don’t have to be a Trekkie or a sci-fi nerd to appreciate and enjoy Galaxy Guest. Underneath the parody - there are some solid laugh out loud moments - is a huge heart for fans, who without it the shows and genre wouldn’t be what it is today. Scores [supsystic-tables id=208] Galaxy Quest scores pretty highly across recommendability and small screen to score a fairly decent 3.98 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Super 8? Ep #197 Super 8 with Luke Gentry and Ben Meechan from Sona
Sound designers Ben Meechan and Luke Gentry from Sona return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Ben’s choice Super 8. Super 8 is a 2011 alien invasion film directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. It stars Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning in the main child roles and Kyle Chandler, Noah Emmerich and Ron Eldard in the main adult roles. The premise of Super 8 is that while making a low budget zombie film for a competition a group of children witness a train crash. In the aftermath a series of strange events happen in their town - dogs running away and large power outings - leading to the military being involved and eventually an alien appears. Super 8 is the ultimate 80s nostalgia movie - it steals/homages from all the best 80s films like E.T, The Goonies and Stand By Me and in turn is a blueprint for Stranger Things and this is part of its downfall in that none of Super 8 feels remotely original or exciting. There are also at least three different narratives running through it, none explored with any great care or detail, the emotional moments don’t hit the mark and an ending that is spectacularly underwhelming. Scores [supsystic-tables id=206] Coming in at nearly two hours long it is far too long and unfocused to be as enjoyable as it should be - the long run time leads to a low repeat viewing score and Super 8 manages to score 3.23 overall. Robbie Collin (The Telegraph and Kermode and Mayo's Film Review) and Ben Bailey Smith (aka Doc Brown, also Kermode and Mayo) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Robbie’s choice Uncut Gems. Uncut Gems is a 2019 Safdie (Josh and Ben) brothers breakout film starring Adam Sandler (in a career best performance) as Howard Ratner, a New York Jewish-American jeweller with a severe gambling problem. Supporting cast features Lakeith Stanfield as Demany, Howard’s business associate, Julia Fox as Howard’s girl on the side Julia, Kevin Garnett as himself and Idina Menzel as Howard’s estranged wife. Deep in debt, Howard sources a rare black opal from an Ethiopian Jewish mine which he intends to sell at auction to solve all his problems. His plan begins to fall apart when Kevin Garnett becomes obsessed with the stone and the repercussions lead to increasingly stressful (and also funny/surreal) encounters in the lesser seen on scene New York. Scores [supsystic-tables id=205] Not for the faint hearted - Uncut Gems may or may not cause you to fall off your chair and comes with a very high recommendability and engagement score to score a very respectable 4.33 overall. Ep #195 The Wolf of Wall Street with Fil and Jonathan from The Pod Charles Cinecast - the official podcast of The Prince Charles Cinema.
Fil and Jonathan from The Pod Charles Cinecast - the official podcast of The Prince Charles Cinema join Flixwatcher remotely to review Fil’s choice The Wolf of Wall Street. The Wolf of Wall Street is the 2013 Martin Scorsese-directed film based on the 2007 memoir of the same name from stockbroker Jordan Belfont. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfont, Jonah Hill as his business partner and friend, Donnie Azoff, Margot Robbie as his wife, Naomi Lapaglia, Matthew McConaughey as Mark Hanna (in a quite bizarre cameo), and Kyle Chandler as FBI agent Patrick Denham who eventually hunts him down. Not quite a rags to riches tale, more of a moderately successful to an insanely rich tale with very little redemption or morality but plenty of tits, ass, cocaine, and Quaaludes. Feelings for The Wolf of Wall Street were mixed Kobi and Fil were totally along for the three-hour thrill ride of excess and depravity, for Helen and Jonathan it was more like three hours of douche bags being douche bags. Scores [supsystic-tables id=204] Scores for The Wolf of Wall Street were mixed, the three hours plus runtime led to a low repeat viewing score but some high engagement scores and recommend ability give it an overall score of 3.71. Ep #194 The Prestige with Helen O’Hara from Empire Podcast and magazine and Helen Zaltzman from The Allusionist, Answer Me This! and Veronica Mars Investigations.
Helen O’Hara (Empire Podcast and magazine) and Helen Zaltzman (The Allusionist, Answer Me This! and Veronica Mars Investigations) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Helen O’H’s choice The Prestige. The Prestige is the 2006 mystery thriller starring Christian Bale as Alfred Borden and Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) as rival magicians in London at the end of the 19th century. Based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Priest is also stars Michael Caine as Cutter, Rebecca Hall as Borden’s wife Sarah, Scarlett Johansson as Angier’s stage assistant Olivia and David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. After a water tank trick ends in tragedy for Angier their rivalry and oneupmanship increases, Borden loses two fingers during a bullet catch and retaliates by injuring an audience member's fingers and killing a bird during Angier’s show. The arrival of the transported man trick leads Angier to Tesla who creates a machine capable of real magic. The Prestige is largely considered Nolan’s best film by fans, in the opening scene Cutter, explains the three parts to a magic trick: The Pledge, The Turn, and The Prestige - essentially the framework for all Nolan’s films but it’s The Prestige where he manages to pull it off without having to over-explain the concepts or melt the brain with time travel. Scores [supsystic-tables id=203] Despite Helen Z not being a Nolan fan, the scores from the other Helens and Kobi, and usually for a Nolan film a high small screen score still awards The Prestige with an overall score of 4.06 overall. There was a lot of love for it from Twitter claiming it to be Nolan’s best. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Prestige? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Brothers Sam and Ben Townsend from Universally Speaking podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Sam’s choice Donnie Brasco. Donnie Brasco is a 1997 true crime drama based on the book Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia by Joseph D. Pistone, and Richard Woodley and directed by Mike Newell. It stars Johnny Depp as Joseph D. Pistone, an undercover FBI agent, and Al Pacino as Lefty (“Horsecock”) Ruggiero the Mafia hitman he befriends to infiltrate the Bonanno crime family in the 1970s. According to Pistone, this film adaptation is 85% true to life, which bits though he never revealed. Donnie Brasco was received pretty well on release, however, given the legacy of Goodfellas and The Sopranos it feels pretty pedestrian and unremarkable watched in 2020. It certainly doesn’t sell the glamorous Mafia lifestyle as Goodfellas does. Scores [supsystic-tables id=202] First-time watcher Kobi wasn’t entirely convinced and it is reflected in the scoring and not even dropping the f-bomb 185 times can make Donnie Brasco score higher than 3.55 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Donnie Brasco? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #192 Bugsy Malone with Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish from the award-winning 90s TV programme The Adam and Joe Show.
Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish (from the award-winning 90s TV programme The Adam and Joe Show) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Adam's choice, Bugsy Malone. Bugsy Malone is a 1976 gangster musical comedy film. The directorial debut of Alan Parker stars child actors playing adult roles with Scott Baio (Bugsy Malone), John Cassisi (Fat Sam), and Jodie Foster (Tallulah) in the lead roles. Except these prohibition-era gangsters use splurge guns instead of bullets and cars are powered by pedals. It’s no surprise Bugsy Malone ended up as an extremely popular school production - even Adam and Joe made their own version at school - so don’t go into Bugsy Malone expecting an acting tour de force, that said Jodie Foster is easily the star of the show. Scores [supsystic-tables id=201] Bugsy Malone is best viewed as a child, possibly at school, sometime between 1976 and 1990 (probably!), not as an adult in 2020 or if you are Adam’s children. The recommend ability for Bugsy Malone was a mixed score and entirely dependant on your nostalgia levels. Fives across the board from Kobi and Joe help Bugsy Malone to score a very respectable 4.32 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Bugsy Malone? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #191 Ghost with Jim Daly and Giles Paley-Phillips from Blank Podcast.
Jim Daly and Giles Paley-Phillips from Blank Podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jim’s choice Ghost. Ghost is a 1990 romantic thriller starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg (Oscar-winning Best Actress in this role), Tony Goldwyn, and Rick Aviles. Couple Sam (Swayze) and Molly (Moore) are renovating their Manhattan apartment when tragedy strikes with Sam being mugged and shot - as he is lying dying in the street his ghost leaves his body. Trapped between the afterlife and reality Sam turns detective with the help of psychic Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg) to track down his killer and discovers the fatal attack was not an accident. Ghost received very mixed reviews when released - an unusual mix of genres - romantic drama and dark thriller with some comedic moments from Jerry (Airplane!) Zucker was just a bit confusing. However, it was a HUGE box office success, helped by the now-infamous “Unchained Melody” pottery scene it was the highest-grossing film of 1990. Ghost has aged surprisingly well, Swayze and Moore have great chemistry and Goldberg is brilliant. The CGI is a bit ropey but it is just about forgivable. Scores [supsystic-tables id=200] Ghost scored very highly for recommendability from Jim (for his first watch), Helen, and Kobi with a straight five, less high from Giles. Ghost did very well across the other Flixwatcher categories to score a very respectable 4.31 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Ghost? What did you think? Ep #190 Parenthood with Simon Dunn from setisoppO podcast and Iszi Lawrence from Terrible Lizards, The British Museum Membercast.
Simon Dunn (setisoppO podcast) and Iszi Lawrence (Terrible Lizards, The British Museum Member cast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Simon’s choice Parenthood. Parenthood is a 1989 Ron Howard comedy ensemble film starring Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Rick Moranis, Martha Plimpton, Keanu Reeves, Dianne Wiest, Jason Robards, Tom Hulce, and Joaquin Phoenix (in one of his earliest roles as Leaf). Martin plays Gill who is having a family crisis as his eldest son is having emotional problems and his wife Karen (Steenburgen) is expecting their fourth child. His older divorced sister Helen (Wiest) is having her own family problems with her children. Her younger son Garry (Phoenix) is withdrawn and secretive and her older daughter Julie (Plimpton) is dating Tod, presumed no good but turns out to be a dude while dealing with loneliness and lack of sex life. Their younger sister Susan is married to Nathan (Moranis) and is neglected as he is more interested in spending time with his precocious daughter. If that wasn’t enough life drama their younger brother Larry (Hulce) returns with gambling problems and his secret biracial son. Parenthood mixes some feel-good moments with some surprisingly bleak visions of parenthood. No film about parenthood would be with sentimentality and it just about gets away with it because it's actually genuinely funny. Iszi hated it, whereas Simon, Kobi, and Helen all enjoyed it - both as a nostalgia watch and as a good Steve Martin film. We did all agree that it should have ended on the ‘life is rollercoaster’ metaphor rather than the maternity ward end. Scores [supsystic-tables id=199] Despite Iszi not enjoying anything about it Parenthood still manages to score a very respectable 3.95 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Parenthood? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #189 Step Brothers with Kamil Dymek and Al Horner from Script Apart podcast.
Kamil Dymek and Al Horner from Script Apart podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Kamil’s choice Step Brothers.
Step Brothers is a 2008 Adam McKay, Judd Apatow, Will Ferrel comedy starring Ferrel and John C. Reilly as middle-aged man-babies who still live at home and suddenly have to live together when their respective single parents become romantically involved. The supporting cast of Mary Steenburgen, Richard Jenkins, and Adam Scott really deserve much better than this.
Step Brother's gross-out humor peaks with Brennan (Ferrel) rubs his balls on Dale’s (Reilly) drum kit. If that isn’t your thing then there is also a scene where the grown men are forced by children to lick dog shit. With a run time of 98 minutes, it is 98 minutes too long. This is a film that was clearly more fun to make than it is to watch. Even though it was made in 2008 the humor feels more dated than it should.
Scores
[supsystic-tables id=198]
Definitely, a dude film that may still appeal to the 10-year-old boy demographic but offers very little for anyone else. Unsurprisingly Helen scores Step Brothers a generous 1 on recommendability, it receives more love from Kamil, Al, and Kobi - enough love to give it a score of 3.12 overall.

Ep #188 Blindspotting with Amy and Harry from Mum and Mummer Podcast.
Amy and Harry from Mum and Mummer Podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Amy’s choice Blindspotting. Blindspotting is a 2018 comedy-drama starring Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal as childhood best friends Colin and Miles. Colin is on the last three days of his probation, trying to stay on the straight and narrow. After hanging out with his pal Miles he witnesses a police shooting of a black civilian and doesn’t report it, he starts to experience hallucinations and nightmares as a result of his guilt. Miles, short-tempered and loud is growing increasingly frustrated by the gentrification of Oakland and starts using violence to express his anger. Blindspotting gives breath and depth to the odd couple/buddy film by exploring racial bias and social inequality. The performances are outstanding, Diggs’ Colin is both the everyman trying to get by and political poetry powerful. While Casal brings a vulnerability to the brash and privileged Miles. Blindspotting manages to be both uncomfortable and familiar - moving between bromance bants and social commentary. Scores [supsystic-tables id=197] Blindspotting scores highly on recommendability and will a run time of 95 it also scores highly on engagement - definitely worth a watch - 4.04 overall score. Ep #187 Unfriended with Ben Travis from Empire Magazine and James King from Radio 2.
Ben Travis (Empire Magazine) and James King (Radio 2) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Ben’s choice Unfriended.
Unfriended is a 2014 video-meeting footage supernatural horror film (yes that is a genre!) told entirely through a screencast of a MacBook. High school student Laura Barns commits suicide following the abuse she receives after being filmed drunk and passing out at a party in a clip that went viral. One year on, Laura’s former best friend Blaire and her friends - Mitch, Jess, Ken, and Adam are chatting online when a mysterious user called "billie227" enters the chat and things begin to get weird and creepy.
Unfriended is unlikely to become a cult film classic - despite being released in 2014 the use of Skype ages the film more than its years - and it will probably be eclipsed by the Zoom focussed Host that came out in 2020. Unfriended is ambitious in its attempt to bring together teen bullying revenge and supernatural horror together - over Skype.
Where Unfriended falls down is when it doesn’t quite follow through with its setup - the ending is a bit weak and the ghost spirit capable of anything feels a bit meh and some of the deaths are questionable. The issue of cyberbullying however remains topical and explores the multiple platforms where bullying and abuse can take place.
Scores

Ep # 186 The Peanut Butter Falcon with Ben Williams from Rokkwood Audio and Will Roe from The Times & Sunday Times Stories of Our Times podcast.
Ben Williams from Rokkwood Audio and Will Roe from The Times & Sunday Times Stories of Our Time podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Ben’s choice The Peanut Butter Falcon. The Peanut Butter Falcon is a 2019 coming of age/odd-couple road movie starring Shia LaBeouf as Tyler (angry, on the run, misunderstood) and Zack Gottsagen as Zak an escapee from a care facility with Downs Syndrome, trying to follow his dreams) and Dakota Johnson as Eleanor as the care facility worker sent to being Zak home. Thrown into the paths of the unlikely friendship is John Hawkes Duncan who is chasing Tyler for money owned and revenge and Thomas Haden Church as Zak’s hero the wrestler The Salt Water Redneck. The Peanut Butter Falcon was the sleeper hit of 2019, it is impossible not to be caught with its Twainesque charm and laidback pace, helped by genuine chemistry between its two leads. The casting of Zack Gottsagen is a welcome move towards inclusivity in mainstream film and you’d be dead inside to not be moved by his optimism and humor. Scores [supsystic-tables id=193] Helped with having a runtime of 98 minutes, The Peanut Butter Falcon scores very highly on recommendability from everyone and pretty high on the small screen too to score 4.46 overall. Ep #185 A Quiet Place with Luke Gentry and Ben Meechan from Sona
Sound designers Luke Gentry and Ben Meechan from Sona (https://www.sona.co.uk/) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Luke’s choice A Quiet Place. A Quiet Place is the directorial debut from John (Jim from The Office) Krasinski, starring Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe as the Abbott family. Set in the not too distant future, humans and animals have been nearly wiped out by sightless, stabbing, ruthless aliens with hypersensitive hearing where the smallest noises incur a deadly attack. Following a devastating tragedy, the Family is trying to survive and rebuild relationships. A Quiet Place manages to blend post-apocalyptic science fiction and horror while sensitively exploring father and daughter relationships and grief. The inclusion of American Sign Language (ASL) as a form of communication and casting Simmonds who is deaf was a welcome move to inclusivity. Scores [supsystic-tables id=192] A Quiet Place scores highly on recommendability and engagement but low on small screen. The collective cinema experience simply could not be replaced at home - support your local cinema to keep films being made for cinema. The overall score for A Quiet Place is 3.70, we hope the sequel will come to the big screen soon. What do you guys think? Have you seen A Quiet Place? What did you think? Ep #184 Kiki's Delivery Service with Rachael and Faye from Her Dark Materials Podcast.
Rachael and Faye from Her Dark Materials return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Rachael’s choice Kikis’ Delivery Service. Kiki’s Delivery Service is a 1989 Studio Ghibli animated film, written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It tells the story of a young witch, Kiki, who moves to a new town to find herself and master her witchery. With her cat Jiji, she starts helping out at a bakery, using her flying skills to deliver special packages. Beware of watching Kiki’s Delivery Service on Netflix - the original subtitled version is much better than the sub-par subbed Disney version. The original version has some wonderful Japanese pop from Yumi Matsutoya and the voicing of Jiji affects the tone and actions so much that it changes the character completely. Kiki’s Delivery Service is rare for an animated children film in that the primary goal isn’t to meet a prince or boy and be married - it’s all about her finding herself and honing her skills so she can become the best version of herself. Tombo is merely an annoyance - not the ideal. The majority of the supporting characters are all strong females too. Ultimately Kiki has a talking cat and who wouldn’t want one of them? Scores [supsystic-tables id=191] Kiki’s Delivery Service scores well on recommendability - less highly on the repeat viewing due to the sheer number of Studio Ghibli films out there to watch. A slightly lower engagement score means Kiki’s Delivery Service scores 3.72 overall. The first Studio Ghibli for Flixwatcher, we hope we’ll review some more! What do you guys think? Ep #183 Clueless with Esther Lisk-Carew and Jass Thethi from Well Spoken Tokens Podcast.
Esther Lisk-Carew and Jass Thethi from Well Spoken Tokens return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Esther’s choice Clueless.
Clueless is the 1995 teen comedy from Amy Heckerling loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma. Set in Beverly Hills Cher (Alicia Silverstone) with her best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash) are the popular girls at High School who give newcomer Tai (Britanny Murphy) a makeover and play matchmaker to her teachers to get perfect grades. It also stars Paul Rudd in his breakout role as Cher’s stepbrother Josh.
From its grunge lite soundtrack (Radiohead, No Doubt) Calvin Klein references, and Cher’s entire wardrobe there is no escaping the 90s - and that isn’t a bad thing! Clueless reinvented the teen genre and led the way for films like 10 Things I Hate About You and to some extend Legally Blonde. The makeover trope in Clueless may begin superficial but at its heart is that actually being a good person is more important and it's okay to just be yourself.
Scores
[supsystic-tables id=190]
Despite being 25 years old Clueless doesn’t feel dated or an old film, Clueless is funny, has lots of heart and it’s only one hour and 37 minutes long. Generous scores all round for recommendability and small screen score give Clueless a very respectable overall score of 4.42.

Ep #182 Children of Men with Paul and Wayne from The Countdown: Movie and TV Reviews podcast.
Paul and Wayne from The Countdown: Movie and TV Reviews podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Paul’s choice Children of Men. Children of Men is the 2006 Alfonso Cuarón adaptation of the novel of the same name starring Clive Owen, Clare-Hope Ashitey, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Pam Ferris, and Charlie Hunnam. Set in 2027 after two decades of infertility society is on the brink of collapse. The UK has become a police state and the Army rounds up asylum seekers and imprisons or executes them. A former activist turned civil servant Theo (Owen) is contacted by his ex-wife Julian (Moore) to arrange transit papers for a young refugee Kee (Ashitey). After they are ambushed early into their journey Theo discovers that Kee is pregnant and he must help her reach the Human Project ship. Children of Men is pretty dark and apart from drinking Carling the dystopian depiction of London is pretty spot on - given it is peak 2020 it doesn’t feel that fictional. Owen carries the film as the everyman trying his best to get Kee to safety - he drinks, he smokes, he loses his shoes. The real star is Cuarón direction which features two extraordinary long one-shot sequences. Scores [supsystic-tables id=189] What do you guys think? Have you seen Children of Men? What did you think? Ep #181 Watchmen with Brothers Ben and Sam Townsend from Universally Speaking podcast.
Brothers Ben and Sam Townsend from Universally Speaking podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Ben’s choice, Watchmen. The Watchmen in question is the 2009 Zack Snyder film based on the DC Comics of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. It stars Malin Åkerman (Silk Spectre II), Billy Crudup (Doctor Manhattan), Matthew Goode (Ozymandias), Carla Gugino (Silk Spectre), Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian), and Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl II). Bringing Watchmen to the screen was never going to be an easy task, it was claimed to be unfilmable and took over ten years, and various directors to finally bring it to the big screen. The Snyder cut was never going to please everyone if it pleased anyone at all. Told through Bob Dylan’s The Times They Are a-Changin the opening credits rattle through the forming of the costumed Minutemen of the 1940s through to the arrival of the Watchmen and their involvement in the Vietnam War and their apparent downfall after vigilantism is made illegal in the late 70s. The main story begins in 1985 when The Comedian is murdered bringing the retired Watchmen back together to figure out who is on a mission to kill the remaining (anti) heroes. Scores [supsystic-tables id=188] Lacking in subtlety and emotion Synder’s Watchman does pack a huge visceral punch. It’s loud, glossy, violent, and impossible to look away it is also a bit scrappy and favors style over substance. With a runtime of two hours and 40 odd minutes, you do have to commit but as a stand-alone film, for the most part, Watchmen does work. The recommendability for Watchmen from Flixwatcher and guests is mixed and it scores low on the small screen to give an overall score of 3.55. What do you guys think? Have you seen Watchmen? Minnie Driver, Alison Janney, and Isabella Rossellini co-star as their love interests. Pascal tells Secondo that Louis Prima will dine at their restaurant and this will save the business so he and Primo put their differences aside to cook and prepare the perfect feast for the ‘Big Night’ Big Night largely flew under the radar when it was released in 1996 but has since grown a loyal following, however, the opinion of Flixwatcher and guests was divided. Thea and Kobi were prepared to overlook the dodgy Italian accents and unbelievable love interests, Helen and Matt were less convinced. Matt did not like it at all, saying Big Night is trite, with unbelievable characters with an over lit and badly choreographed climatic party night scene. Don’t hold back Matt! Scores [supsystic-tables id=187] The scores for Big Night from Thea and Kobi were generous, from Matt less so (with a big fat zero for recommendability, repeat viewing, and engagement) but despite this Big Night still manages to score 3.16 overall. Ep #179 Out Of Sight with Wayne and Paul from The Countdown Podcast.
Wayne and Paul from the Countdown podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Wayne’s choice Out of Sight. Out of Sight is the 1998 Steven Soderbergh comedy crime adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name starring George Clooney as sexy bank robber Jack Foley and Jennifer Lopez as sexy U.S Marshal Karen Sisco. Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Dennis Farina, Nancy Allen, Steve Zahn, Catherine Keener, and Albert Brooks co-star with cameos from Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson. During a prison break out Sisco ends up in the car boot (trunk for you Americans) with Foley. Unable to resist the charms of Clooney, Sisco follows him through his next caper under the guise of arresting him for his crimes while also spending a romantic evening with him. Out of Sight is a sexy cat and mouse film, despite being a (non-violent) bank robber it's hard not to fall for Foley/Clooney and enjoy the colorful supporting character's interactions. Is this the sexiest movie ever made? Quite possibly, Clooney and Lopez have genuine chemistry and while this isn’t a rom-com it’s an extremely enjoyable two hours and three minutes. Scores [supsystic-tables id=186] Fun and flighty with a great ensemble cast Out of Sight scores very highly on the recommend ability, less highly on the repeat viewing (due to the two hours run length) but it manages to score a very respectable 4.23 overall. Ep # 178 The Truman Show with Al Horner and Kamil Dymek from Script Apart podcast.
Al Horner and Kamil Dymek from Script Apart podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Al’s choice The Truman Show.
The Truman Show is the 1998 comedy-drama that also falls into the science fiction and touches on deep psychological traumas. Pre-dating reality TV, The Truman Show stars Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) as the unsuspecting star in his own TV show that follows him 24-7. The supporting characters are his wife, Meryl (Laura Linney), his best friend Marlon (Noah Emmerich), and his true love Sylvia (Natascha McElhone), Ed Harris exists as Christof the creator of The Truman Show on the outside controlling Truman’s narrative.
We join Truman as he is experiencing a sort of mid-life crisis, unusual events happen that cause him to begin to question his reality - spotlights fall from the sky, single streams of rainfall on him and his estranged/presumed dead father reappears. He becomes increasingly more suspicious and reconnects with Sylvia and manages to escape from his home and cameras which leads to a dramatic showdown with Christof at sea.

It is fair to say The Truman Show is a modern classic, watching it leaves you with more questions (existence, reality, artificiality, destiny, free will, God) than answers. It is genuinely thought-provoking and despite the high-concept incredibly warm and full of heart. The Truman Show deservedly scores high across all Flixwatcher categories to score a very high 4.50 overall.

Ep # 177 Hereditary with Brian from New Zealand and Dan LeFebvre from Based on a True Story.
Brian from New Zealand and Dan LeFebvre from Based on a True Story podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Brian’s choice Hereditary. Hereditary is Ari Aster’s horror tragedy directorial debut starring Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro. After the death of her secretive and creepy mother, miniatures artist Annie (Collette) attends an open support group and tells the group about her mother's overbearing relationship with her equally creepy daughter Charlie (Shapiro). Her son Peter (Wolff) is reluctant to take his creepy sister to a party but gives in to his mother's pressure and while at the party Charlie suffers an allergic reaction. When driving at speed to take Charlie to the hospital in a freak turn of events Peter is responsible for decapitating Charlie. The death of Charlie sends Annie further into grief and leads her to Joan who sets up a seance to communicate with Charlie. Through further investigation of her mother's belongings and history, Annie reveals a history of spells, the occult, and a plan to bring the spirit King Paimon to life with three headless sacrifices. Scores [supsystic-tables id=184] Not for the fainthearted, Hereditary is part an exploration through family grief and part supernatural thriller with some inventive decapitations and jump scares. Ambitious and richly detailed, Hereditary definitely rewards on the rewatch, if you can get through the first watch. The scores for Hereditary on recommendability are mixed and more favorable from Brian and Helen generally to give an overall score of 3.37. What do you guys think? Have you seen Hereditary? Ep # 176 Burn After Reading with Harry and Amy from Mum and Mummer Podcast.
Harry and Amy from Mum and Mummer Podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Harry’s choice Burn After Reading. Burn After Reading is the 2008 sex farce caper from the Coen Brothers starring John Malkovich, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, and Tilda Swinton. McDormand and Pitt are dimwitted gym employees who stumble across a memoir from disgraced Malkovich. Mistaking it for top-secret documents they end up in a blackmail plot that goes wrong and at the same time, Clooney and Swinton are having an affair. Coming straight after the critical success of No Country for Old Men the reaction to this Coen effort was mixed, to say the least. It might be Harry’s favorite Coen caper, but it’s possibly Helen’s least favorite Coen film. On the positive, though it is only 96 minutes long. Scores [supsystic-tables id=183] Despite Helen’s low scores Burn After Reading still manages to score a very respectable 4.16 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Burn After Reading? Ep # 175 The Big Lebowski with Giles Paley-Phillips and Jim Daly from Blank Podcast
Giles Paley-Phillips and Jim Daly from Blank Podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Giles’ choice The Big Lebowski. The Big Lebowski is the 1998 comedy from the Coen Brothers starring Jeff Bridges as The Dude (Jeff Lebowski), John Goodman as unhinged Vietnam Vet Walter, Steve Buscemi as their bowling pal Donny who end up embroiled in a case of stolen rugs and mistaken identity with another Jeff Lebowski, his trophy wife Bunny (Tara Reid), his daughter Maude (an outstanding Julianne Moore) and three German nihilists (including Peter Stormare, Aimme Mann, and Flea) - narrated by Sam Elliot. The plot, loosely, is centered around a fake kidnapping of Bunny where The Dude ends up being the go-between for Jeff Lebowski and the German nihilists. A series of events leads to the ransom money being lost, some bowling, loads of weed and White Russians, a severed toe, nude painting, a marmot, and an erection doodle. Completely bonkers yet enduring, mainly in part to Bridges Dude, a man, who despite repeated beatings and having his rug pissed on still remains a Dude throughout. The Big Lebowski is also a love letter to bowling - gorgeous cinematography and sounds of falling pins. Scores [supsystic-tables id=182] The Big Lebowski unsurprisingly scores very highly across all Flixwatcher categories (full five marks across all from Giles) and scores a very respectable 4.67 overall. The Dude abides. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Big Lebowski What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep # 174 Twilight with James King from Radio 2 and Ben Travis from Empire Magazine.
James King from Radio 2 and Ben Travis from Empire Magazine join Flixwatcher remotely to review James’s choice Twilight. Twilight (2008) is the first film in the Twilight Saga series based on the romantic fantasy novels of the same name starring Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart, directed by Catherine Hardwick. Twilight focuses on the romantic relationship between Bella Swan (Stewart) and the mysterious Edward Cullen (Pattison) who as well as being incredibly handsome with great hair also a 104-year-old vampire. This first installment also sets the scene for the following films and introduces the history and rivalry between vampires and werewolves. When it was released in 2008 it was, to quote James King “The must-see movie of the year”, it also launched Pattison and Stewart into superstardom. Slated on its release by critics - many of them middle-aged men - not teenage girls who for many of them the story of a teenage girl falling in love with a sexy vampire was just the film they wanted to see. With a run time of over two hours, it’s probably a bit too long but it is enjoyable - particularly the ferocious animal attraction between Bella and Edward. Scores [supsystic-tables id=181] Twilight scores highly on recommendability - definitely feels like now is a good time to revisit it and holds its own in the teen movie genre. Twilight loses some points with engagement and scores 3.68 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Twilight? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep # 173 BlacKKKlansman with Esther Lisk-Carew and Jass Thethi from Well Spoken Tokens
Esther Lisk-Carew and Jass Thethi from Well Spoken Tokens join Flixwatcher remotely to review Jass’s choice BlacKkKlansman.
BlacKkKlansman is a 2018 Oscar-Winning (Best Adapted Screenplay) Spike Lee joint starring John David Washington and Adam Driver.
BlacKkKlansman is based on the 2014 memoir by Ron Stallworth. Set in 1970s Colorado Springs it tells the story of the first African-American detective in the police department who manages to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan chapter with the help of Flip (Driver) Zimmerman.
Even though BlacKkKlansman is set in the 1970s a lot of the themes running through it are still very prevalent in today’s America. Lee using artistic license adds dry humour and moments of light relief whilst tackling the unpleasant and disturbing KKK.
Scores
[supsystic-tables id=180]
Up there with Do The Right Thing, BlacKkKlansman is contemporary and Lee at his best. Unsurprisingly BlacKkKlansman scores very highly across all the categories - particularly in the recommendability category to score a very respectable 4.58 overall.

Ep #172 Being John Malkovich with Matt Houlihan and Thea Gilien from The Podcast Review Show.
Matt Houlihan and Thea Gilien from The Podcast Review Show join Flixwatcher remotely to review Matt’s choice Being John Malkovich.
Being John Malkovich is a 1999 surreal comedy-drama from the weird and wonderful mind of Charlie Kaufman and visionary director Spike Jonze - both making their debuts with this. John Cusack, Catherine Keener, Cameron Diaz star alongside John Malkovich playing himself in a career-best performance.
Cusack plays Craig Schwartz, an unemployed puppeteer and fair to say control freak sex pest, who discovers a portal into John Malkovich’s head behind a filing cabinet in a room of the 7 1/2 floor of LesterCorp. Diaz plays his injured animal obsessed dowdy wife Lottie. Schwartz falls instantly in love with Keener’s Maxine, a sexy, hardheaded, and manipulative bitch who ends up in a sex farce love triangle with Malkovich but only when he is being controlled by Lottie or Schwartz.

It is fair to say Being John Malkovich is not your average rom-com, if there was one word to describe it surreal would be it. Its best not to try and think too much about the logistics of the portal into John Malkovich’s head and enjoy the weird and wonderful journey instead. If you’ve always wanted to see John Malkovich’s face on the body of a woman this is the film for you! Despite being pretty bonkers Being John Malkovich scores highly across all categories to score a very respectable 4.20 overall.
