Episode # 269 See No Evil, Hear No Evil with Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast
Kevin Lehane and Will Collins from The Best Bits Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Kevin’s choice See No Evil, Hear No Evil.
See No Evil, Hear No Evil is a 1989 Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder comedy directed by Arthur (Love Story) Hiller. Pryor plays Wallace "Wally" Karew, a blind man and Wilder plays David "Dave" Lyons, a deaf man who end up on the run from the police after “witnessing” a murder. Kevin Spacey also stars in one of his earlier roles.
It received a mixed response on its release - mostly negative reviews but was a relative box office success and would be Pryor and Wilder’s last financially successful film together.
While See No Evil, Hear No Evil might offer a nostalgia watch for anyone who watched it as a child in the 1980s it will probably offer little - and quite possibly offend anyone watching with 2022 eyes.
Scores for See No Evil, Hear No Evil were mixed from Flixwatcher and guests (there may have also been some tactical scoring going on!) but it still manages an overall rating of 3.55.

Episode # 268 Ponyo with Danni Haughan and DaveSmith from Wardour Studios
Danni Haughan and David Smith from Small Wardour join Flixwatcher remotely to review Danni’s choice Ponyo.
Ponyo is a 2008 Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Miyazaki’s eighth film for Ghibli). In this film a magical fish called Ponyo escapes from her overprotective father Fujimoto and meets five-year-old Sōsuke. After tasting human blood she gains the ability to change into human form and eats ham. Believing her to have been kidnapped Fujimoto imprisons her. With the help of her fish sisters Ponyo escapes and inadvertently spills magic into the ocean that causes a huge tsunami to flood the town.
Ponyo, as you’d expect from a Studio Ghibli film, is a mixture of everyday life and the utterly bonkers - all captured in stunning animated detail. We recommend you watch it with Japanese audio and subtitles first and second time with the English dub with Liam Neeson!
Ponyo scored highly across all Flixwatcher categories to give an impressive overall rating of 4.11. Currently placing it second in the Flixwatcher rankings of Studio Ghibli films reviewed so far!

Episode # 267 The Father with Hana Walker Brown and Jen Offord
Hana Walker Brown (Broccoli Productions, author A Delicate Game) and Jen Offord (Standard Issue Podcast, author The Year of the Robin) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Hana's choice The Father.
The Father is a 2020 drama directed by Florian Zeller and is based on the stage play of the same name. It stars Anthony Hopkins, in an Oscar-winning performance, as the father, Anthony, Olivia Coleman as his daughter Anne, Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell, and Olivia Williams Co star.
Anthony is in his 80s and has dementia, his daughter Anne is frustrated as he has rejected several carers and it is putting a strain on her relationship with her partner. Through their interactions we move between Anthony's flat and Anne's flat. We meet Laura, a carer, who bears a likeness to his other daughter Lucy or is she his memory of Lucy? There are two different men in the flat, sometimes Paul and sometimes James.
The Father is a powerful and disorientating experience of how it feels to slowly lose your memory to dementia. Characters and rooms shift and change and the viewer questions what is real and what is imagined.
The Father is a difficult watch but it is also an incredible film with stellar performances. Unsurprisingly the scores for recommendability were very high. Slightly lower scores for repeat viewing give The Father an overall rating of 3.96.

Episode # 266 His House with Ian Harries and Graham Jones from The Podcast Nobody Asked For
Graham Jones and Ian Harries from The Podcast Nobody Asked For return to Flixwatcher to review Graham’s choice His House.
His House is a 2020 horror film written and directed by Remi Weeks and starring Wunmi Mosaku, Sope Dirisu and Matt Smith.
Bol (Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku) are refugees fleeing from war-torn South Sudan. After surviving the dangerous journey across the English Channel in an overcrowded boat they are granted asylum in England. They find themselves assigned a grotty house on a nondescript housing estate with a sympathetic but firm case worker (Matt Smith) keeping a close eye on them. As Bol and Rial struggle to fit in with their new environment they are visited by a “night-witch” or apeth that torments them at night.
While His House was a hit for Flixwatcher and guests its tough subject made it hard to easily recommend. However, with a tight run time of 93 minutes and excellent performances from both Dirisu and Mosaku His House still scores a respectable 3.98 overall.

Episode # 265 The Edge of Seventeen with Bárbara Mendes-Jorge and Fran from Over/underrated music podcast
Fran and Babs from Over/underrated: a music podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Frans choice The Edge of Seventeen.
The Edge of Seventeen is a 2016 coming-of-age comedy-drama starring Hailee Steinfeld as 17 year-old Nadine who is dealing with recently losing her beloved father, falling out with her best friend, boys and other teenage dramas. Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig is also stars Woody Harrelson as her school teacher, Haley Lu Richardson as Nadine’s (ex) best friend Krista and Kyra Sedgwick as Nadine’s mum.
Despite its slightly gloomy synopsis The Edge of Seventeen swings more towards the comedy elements as Nadine navigates being a teenager in a world that doesn’t understand her while realising the world is not actually as against her as she thinks.
Anchored by a strong performance by Steinfeld, The Edge of Seventeen is an above average teen film. However, Edge of Seventeen the song sadly does not feature on the soundtrack. Strong recommendability but slightly repeat viewing scores gives The Edge of Seventeen an overall score of 3.75.

Episode # 263 The Gray Man with Helen and Bill from When One Thing Leads To Another
Helen and Bill from When One Thing Leads to Another podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Helen’s choice The Gray Man.
The Gray Man is a 2022 action thriller directed by Anthony and Joe (Avengers: Endgame) Russo based on the novel of the same name by Mark Greaney.
It stars Ryan Gosling as Six, an assassin in the CIA's Sierra program, Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen, a sociopathic ex-CIA agent, Billy Bob Thornton as Fitzroy, a senior CIA official and Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick and Regé-Jean Page co star.
After a hit goes wrong in Bangkok Six finds himself on the run with some classified info from Hanson and his gang of take no prisoners extraction teams. There is a ridiculous extended action scene involving a tram and lots of fighting.
With a production budget of $200 million, it is among the most expensive films made by Netflix. It has a limited cinema release and received lukewarm reviews.
The recommendability scores for The Gray Man were mixed, with Helen and Bill scoring highly and Helen and Kobi a bit lower to give an overall rating of 3.60.

Episode # 262 Labyrinth with Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast
Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Will’s choice Labyrinth.
Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy directed by Jim (The Muppets) Henson and written by Terry (Monty Python) Jones. It stars David Bowie (who also wrote the songs) as Jareth the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly, in her breakout role, as Sarah.
After wishing that the goblins come and take away her baby brother Toby, Sarah has to tackle the labyrinth in 13 hours to rescue him or he will turn into a goblin. Along the way she encounters its unusual inhabitants - friends Hoggle, Ludo, Sir Didymus and foes The Firey’s and the Bog of Eternal Stench.
Hard to believe but Labyrinth was a box office flop and opened to mixed reviews, over the years, due it part to Bowie’s legacy, it has firmly become a cult classic and frequently sells out cinema screenings.
Labyrinth scores very highly across all Flixwatcher categories, only dropping a few points on small screen to score a very respectable 4.65 overall.

Episode # 261 Midsommar with Ian Harries and Graham Jones from The Podcast Nobody Asked For
Midsommar is the 2019 second feature film from writer and director Ari Aster. Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor
William Jackson Harper and Will Poulter as a group a friends invited to visit Sweden to experience an exclusive midsummer festival. After a family tragedy, the tensions in the relationship between Dani and her boyfriend Christian are out in the open. Despite her obvious fragile mental state she agrees to come along and it is not long before strange things start happening and the lines between reality and hallucinations become blurred.
Midsommar is an extremely vivid and imaginative folk horror than manages to move between the disturbing and the amusing with ease. Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Florence Pugh helps the two hour and 27 minute run time feel light.
The Podcast Nobody Asked For has to date recommended Midsommar 146 times - therefore it was not a surprise that their scores for recommendabilty were the full five. Slightly lower scores for small screen - this is film best viewed with an audience on a big screen - gives an overall rating of 4.15.

Karen Gabay (TV producer, award-winning film maker, exhibition curator and radio presenter) and Lissi Simpson (development assistant, script writer and director) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Karen’s choice The Black Godfather.
The Black Godfather is a 2019 documentary about Clarence Avant, known as “the godfather of black music”, directed Reginald Hudlin and distributed by Netflix.
Clarence is a man who knows everyone and yet no one outside of the industry knows him. He helped launch the career of Bill Withers, promoted Michael Jackson’s Bad tour and gave Sean (Puff Daddy) Combs a safe passage out of LA the weekend Biggie Smalls was killed.
It has no shortage of celebrities chipping in on their memories of Clarence with Bill Clinton,Bill Withers, Jam and Lewis, Quincy Jones, Barack Obama, David Geffen, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Snoop Dogg, Kamala Harris, Jamie Foxx, Jim Brown and Lionel Richie all appearing. Heavy on guest appearances but light on digging deeper into the man himself despite the close to two hours run time.

Episode # 259 Jack Reacher with Chris Johnston and Liam H Dempsey from Easy Riders Raging Podcast & Spocklight podcast
Liam H Dempsey (Spocklight podcast) and Chris Johnston (Easy Riders Raging Podcast, The Spielberg pod) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Liam’s choice Jack Reacher.
Jack Reacher is the 2012 action thriller based on Lee Child’s novel One Shot starring Tom Cruise as Reacher and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Jai Courtney, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog also star.
A former US Army sniper James Barr is accused of killing five seemingly random people in broad daylight. Evidence would indicate a clear cut case but under interrogation Barr writes "Get Jack Reacher" and it becomes apparent all is not what it would seem.
Highlights of Jack Reacher are undoubtedly Werner Herzog’s Zek, who manages to steal every scene he is in and has the best lines “I chewed these fingers off before the frostbite could turn to gangrene.” The action is fairly solid but doesn’t quite hit the same as the Cruise - McQuarrie Mission Impossibles.
Scores for Jack Reacher were firmly in the threes, not great but not bad, regardless of whether Cruise was too short to play Reacher and it scores a very solid 3.25 overall.

Episode # 258 The Mask with Kelechi Ehenulo and Steven Geekface from So Geeked About Movies and Confessions From A Geek Mind
Steven Geekface (So Geeked About Movies) and Kelechi Ehenulo (Confessions From A Geek Mind, Film Stories, VultureHound Magazine) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Steven’s choice The Mask.
The Mask is a 1994 comedy starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz in her debut role. Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, a hapless bank clerk who lives a very average and unremarkable life. Until he finds a magical mask which transforms him into a rubbery green-faced cartoonish alter ego. Acting as a sort of superhero, he begins to use his new found powers for fighting crime and general silliness.
The Mask was one of three films starring Carrey that came out in 1994 (Ace Ventura and Dumber and Dumber) and was the most successful commercially and critically. It also launched the career of Diaz. It’s mixture of wacky visuals and quotable lines made it a huge hit for cinema kids of the 1990s too.
Scores for The Mask from Steven, Kelechi and Kobi were strong on recommendability, less high from Helen though (not sad Jim Carrey enough). When combined with lower scores in the other other categories gave an overall rating of 3.52. S-ssss-ssss-sssss-smokin!

Episode # 257 Point Break with Dave and Rich from Unequal Sequel
Rich and Dave from Unequal Sequel return to Flixwatcher to review Rich’s choice Point Break.
Point Break is 1991 action film directed by Kathryn Bigelow starring Keanu Reeves as FBI Agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as surfer and bank robber Bodhi. In supporting roles are Gary Busey as jaded FBI agent Angelo Pappas and Lori Petty as Tyler the love interest.
Rookie agent Utah is brought in to investigate with Pappas a series of bank robberies by the ‘Ex-Presidents’ - named because of the rubber masks they wear. After some sleuthing they deduce that the gang are surfers and Utah is tasked with infiltrating the local surfers by going “undercover”. It soon transpires that Utah’s new friend Bodhi and his friends are prime suspects and Utah is conflicted in his feelings towards the surfer.
Point Break is undeniably one of the quintessential films of the 1990s. It positioned Bigelow as a mainstream director and is the ultimate bromance action film. Unsurprisingly Point Break scores highly on the Flixwatcher categories - especially recommendability and it scores a very impressive 4.45 overall.

Episode # 256 Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with Leila Latif and Hanna Ines Flint from The First Film Club
Film writers Hanna Flint (Fade to Black podcast, The First Film Club) and Leila Latif (Little White Lies, Curzon, Total Film) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Hannah’s choice Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a 2000 wuxia (the adventures of martial artists in ancient China) film. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Chow Yun-fat as Li Mu Bai, Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien and Zhang Ziyi as Jen Yu. Li Mu Bai, a warrior, asks Yu Shu Lien, the woman he loves, to pass on his sword, Green Destiny, to Sir Te. However, when the sword is stolen, Li embarks on a mission to find it.
It broke records for its box office gross for a foreign-language film and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film. The highest ever for a non-English language film, until it was equaled by Roma in 2018. The film gave a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films and led the way for films such as House of Flying Daggers and Hero having success with Western audiences.
Unsurprisingly Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon scores highly from Flixwatcher and guests - with a very, very strong recommendability rating. Slightly lower scores for small screen give an overall rating of 4.39

Episode # 255 Never Rarely Sometimes Always with Em and Clare from wratedpod and VerbalDiorama
Clare (W-Rated podcast) and Em (Verbal Diorama podcast) and return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Em’s choice Never Rarely Sometimes Always.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always is a 2020 American drama written and directed by Eliza Hittman. It stars Sidney Flanigan (in her debut) as 17-year-own Autumn who takes a trip from her hometown of Pennsylvania with her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder) to a New York City Planned Parenthood to carry out a legal abortion.
One of the best films of 2020, it feels even more important now as the Wade vs Roe reversal threatens to remove the legal rights for women to access safe abortions across America.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always is an intimate and powerful female led film about resilience, friendship and choice, without blame and judgment for the central characters choices.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always scores high on recommendability but as it is a film that is a difficult watch the lower repeat viewing scores gives an overall rating of 4.11

Episode # 254 Baby Driver with Karen Gabay and Lissi Simpson
Lissi Simpson (development assistant, scriptwriter and director) and Karen Gabay (TV producer, award-winning film-maker, exhibition curator and radio presenter) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Lissi’s choice Baby Driver.
Baby Driver is a 2017 Edgar Wright action drama starring Ansel Elgort as Baby, a getaway driver with tinnitus, Lily James as his love interest Deborah, Jon Hamm and Eiza González as love bird bank robbers Buddy and Darling and Kevin Spacey as Doc, the kingpin of the organised crime syndicate. Jon Bernthal and Jamie Foxx also appear as colourful criminals. Baby is forced to use his driver skills to be the getaway driver to pay back a car he stole from Doc, despite clearing his debt he is forced to do one last job - that obviously goes wrong!
Baby Driver was a longtime passion project for Wright and it clearly shows in the visuals and audio. Sadly, given the association now with disgraced Spacey and Elgort is it less the exciting and exhilarating watch that it was back in 2017 and this is reflected in the recommendability scores. Low scores for small screen due to the soundtrack as much as the action gives a solid overall rating of 4.12.

Episode # 253 The Naked Gun with Tatton Spiller and Diane Daniels Simple Politics
Tatton Spiller and Diane Daniels from Simple Politics (Instagram, Podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Tatton’s choice The Naked Gun.
The Naked Gun is the 1988 police spoof comedy from David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams starring Leslie Nielsen as Det. Sgt. Frank Drebin, Priscilla Presley as Jane and O. J. Simpson as Det. Fred Nordberg. In this outing of the Police Squad! franchise Det. Frank Drebin is in charge of security for a visit of Queen Elizabeth II to LA while at the same time investigating a drug bust gone (hilariously) wrong.
The Naked Gun manages to cram in a multitude of slapstick comedy and visual and verbal puns into its lean 85 minute runtime. Gags which have been burned into the memory of Flixwatcher and guests - who doesn’t recall “it’s Enrico Pallazzo!” or “ice beaver”??!!
Could you make The Naked Gun now? Maybe not! The opening scene probably not but the majority of the humour is very childish rather than malicious. The Naked Gun scores highly across all Flixwatcher categories to score a very respectable 4.21 overall.

Episode 252 # The Harder They Fall with Katie Smith-Wong and Kelechi Ehenulo
Kelechi Ehenulo (Confessions From A Geek Mind, Film Stories, VultureHound Magazine) and Katie Smith-Wong (Movie Marker, Film Stories, New Scientist) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Kelechi’s choice The Harder They Fall.
The Harder They Fall is a 2021 Western debut film written and directed by Jeymes Samuel. Loosely based on real cowboys and outlaws of the 19th-century American West. Rare for Westerns it features a principal cast of black actors which includes Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Delroy Lindo and Lakeith Stanfield.
The film opens with an 11-year-old Nat Love witnessing the murder of his parents at the dinner table by Rufus (Idris Elba) Buck and being marked by Buck with a cross carved on his forehead. Fast forward twenty years and Nat (Jonathan Majors) learns of Buck being released from prison and gets the gang together to seek revenge.
The Harder They Fall is a dazzling debut that is as violent as it is energetic and scores very highly on recommendability from guests and Flixwatcher. Slightly slower scores for small screen give an overall rating of 4.37.

Episode # 251 Beats with Bárbara Mendes-Jorge and Fran from Over/underrated music podcast
Babs and Fran from Over/underrated: a music podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Babs’ choice Beats.
Beats is a 2019 American coming of age hip hop drama (not to be confused with the other 2019 called film Beats) that tells the fictional story of a musical prodigy in Chicago experiencing PSTD from a violent incident, who ends up being mentored by a disgraced music producer.
Starring Khalil Everage as August Monroe, the teenage beats enthusiast, Anthony Anderson as Romelo Reese, the ex music producer now school security guard and supporting cast Uzo Aduba as Carla Monroe, Augusts mother and Paul Walter Hauser as Terren, the owner of the record label trying to sign August.
Fran’s expectations were for Boyz in the Hood meets Dr Dre but unfortunately Beats doesn’t reach those heights of greatness, Lacking in big musical moments and despite some nice editing work its hard to get emotionally invested in watching some button pressing and 808 beat creations.
Recommendability scores for Beats were average and its two hour runtime works against it for repeat viewing and engagement to give it an overall rating of 2.59.

Episode # 250 Les Miserables with Josh Pappenheim and Sam Clements from 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest
Sam Clements (90 Minutes or Less Film Fest podcast) and Josh Pappenheim (Truly Happily Madison Podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Sam’s choice Les Misérables.
Les Misérables is a 2012 adaptation of the 1985 West End English translation of the 1980 French musical, which is adapted from the 1862 French novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Directed by Tom (The Kings Speech) Hooper it features a star-studded cast that includes Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fantine (which earned her an Oscar), Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius Pontmercy and Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen as the Thénardiers.
Les Mis is a sung-through musical and Hooper made the interesting decision to have the actors sing live, as opposed to synching to a backing track. This may explain to some extent some of the bizarre facial expressions, and extreme emotions and really tests the singing ability of the cast.
On its release, Les Mis was a mega-hit - taking over £8 million in its opening UK weekend and it went on to win multiple nominations and wins at Golden Globes, BAFTAs and the Academy Awards.
With a run time of two hours and 37 minutes, it is a LOT of singing and a LOT of clumsy and cringe-inducing camera zoom in your face. Flixwatcher and guests found it hard to recommend beyond being a fan of musicals and Les Mis scores only 2.88 overall (lower than Cats!).

Episode # 249 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with Meg Fozzard and Fran Turauskis from On the Outside podcast
Meg Fozzard (writer and disability rights campaigner) and Fran Turauskis (On the Outside podcast, Pod Bible Digital Editor) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Meg’s choice Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (OUATIH).
OUATIH is the 10th film by director and writer Quentin Tarantino. Set in a semi-reality of 1969 Hollywood it stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton, a (fictional) TV actor struggling to break into cinema, Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth Rick’s (fictional) stunt double, Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate who meets an alternative fate and a supporting cast of Emile Hirsch, Timothy Olyphant, Dakota Fanning, Damian Lewis, Al Pacino and Kurt Russell.
There isn’t so much as a plot to OUATIH, it is more of a series of vignettes that are connected by chance and coincidence rather than agency or narrative. Dalton and Booth are composites of real Hollywood characters and through a series of chance events end up intervening in the Manson Family and prevent the death of Sharon Tate - set up over two hours and 40 minutes,
On its release, it received mixed opinions - praised for being an incredibly detailed and authentic love letter to Hollywood and the acting partnership of DiCaprio and Pitt but criticised for its gratuitous violence against women, the portrayal of Bruce Lee and its long runtime.
Flixwatcher and guests also had a mixed response which was reflected heavily in the recommendability scores giving OUATIH an overall rating of 2.88. Making it the lowest-ranked Tarantino film on Flixwatcher.

Episode # 248 The Mitchells vs the Machines with Chris Johnston and Liam H Dempsey from Easy Riders Raging Podcast & Spocklight podcast
Chris Johnston (Easy Riders Raging Podcast) and Liam H Dempsey (Spocklight podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Chris’ choice The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a 2021 animated family comedy produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie). It was scheduled for a cinema release but due to Covid restrictions was released on Netflix in April 2021.
The Mitchells are outdoors loving, tech hating dad Rick and peacemaker and baking enthusiast mum Linda. They live in a small town in Michigan with their children Katie (aspiring filmmaker) and Aaron (dinosaur fanatic) and their pug dog Monchi. On the evening before Katie leaves for college to start her dream course in filmmaking she falls out with dad Rick. To try and save their relationship he cancels her flight to instead drive her there in a last chance attempt at a family bonding adventure. At the same time, a highly intelligent AI PAL launches an attack against the human race and orders an army of robots to capture humans. It is left to the Mitchells to stop them and save humanity.
Benefiting from fast-paced and frenetic storytelling with pop culture memes and viral videos this was a huge lockdown hit for adults and children last year. Sadly, despite the enthusiasm for The Mitchells vs. the Machines from Flixwatcher and guests, it did not win Best Animated film at the Oscars but it did however score a very respectable 3.84 overall.

Episode # 247 The Tinder Swindler with Kelechi Ehenulo and Steven Geekface from So Geeked About Movies and Confessions From A Geek Mind
Kelechi Ehenulo (Confessions From A Geek Mind, Film Stories, VultureHound Magazine) and Steven Geekface (So Geeked About Movies) join Flixwatcher remotely to review The Tindler Swinder.
The Tinder Swindler is a 2022 Netflix true-crime documentary that tells the story of the Israeli conman Simon Leviev who used the dating app Tinder to emotionally manipulate a number of women into funding his lavish lifestyle.
Between 2017 and 2019 he allegedly conned an estimated $10 million from victims across Europe. He presented himself as the son of Russian-Israeli diamond mogul Lev Leviev - by photoshopping himself into family photos. Using Tinder he would meet women in hotels and show them private jets (which were funded by other women) and once he had established a relationship begin asking them for money to protect him from his “enemies”.
Some of the moments in The Tinder Swindler are genuinely draw-dropping - the reveal that one of his victims took out close to $250,000 in loans is equally shocking as it is devastating. It has to be seen to be believed and this was reflected in strong scores for recommendability but lower scores for repeat viewing gives an overall rating of 3.49.

Episode # 246 Tick Tick Boom with Ben Challoner and Joe Kiely from (Third Window Films Podcast, The Wire Stripped, Shitegeist podcast)
Joe Kiely (The Wire Stripped, Shitegeist podcast) and Ben Challoner (Third Window Films Podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Joe's choice tick, tick... BOOM!
Tick Tick Boom is a 2021 musical theatre biographical film starring Andrew Garfield as Jonathan Larson. Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and written by Steven (Dear Evan Hansen) Levenson it is based on the stage production of the same name written by Larson about his struggle trying to make a name in the world of performing arts.
It captures the period of Larson's life where he spent being a peak asshole and before he wrote the hit musical Rent, which he never saw the success of because he tragically died on the day of the preview.
Released on Netflix in November 2021 it received a mixed reaction from Flixwatcher and guests and generally. Although it is pretty much agreed that Garfield's performance is a standout and deserves all the nominations for his singing and musicality.
This is reflected in the scores with recommenability hovering around the threes but low numbers for repeat viewing and engagement (a runtime of two hours feels stretched) gives an overall rating of 3.17.

Episode # 245 Highlander with Dave and Rich from Unequal Sequel
Dave and Rich from Unequal Sequel podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Dave’s choice Highlander.Dave and Rich from Unequal Sequel podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Dave’s choice Highlander.
Highlander is a 1986 British fantasy action film directed by Russell (The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star) Mulcahy starring Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, Sean Connery as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez (no really) and Clancy Brown as the Kurgan.
The three central characters are all immortal (except if you are decapitated) time travelling warriors. MacLeod is born in 16th century Scottish Highlands and after he survives an apparently fatal wound is expelled from his village where Ramírez visits him to explain the ways of the immortals. In present-day New York MacLeod is living as an antique dealer and the Kurgan is hot in pursuit to kill him as “there can be only one!”
Despite performing badly at cinemas Highlander gained a passionate audience when it was released on VHS and helped by a particularly great soundtrack by Queen. So passionate that it spawned four (mostly terrible) sequels and a remake is rumoured to be made.
Recommendability doesn’t necessarily mean good and Highlander gets a decent score in this category and small screen. Less highly for repeat viewing and engagement gives an overall rating of 3.42.

Episode # 244 Easy A with Leila Latif and Hanna Ines Flint from The First Film Club
Film writers Leila Latif (Little White Lies, Curzon, Total Film) and Hanna Flint (Fade to Black podcast, The First Film Club) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Leila’s choice Easy A.
Easy A is a 2010 teen comedy loosely inspired by The Scarlet Letter starring Emma Stone, Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Thomas Haden Church, Amanda Bynes, Penn Badgley, Lisa Kudrow, and Malcolm McDowell.
Stone plays Olive, a high school student who makes up an elaborate lie about losing her virginity to avoid spending a weekend with her best (but toxic) friend (Amanda Bynes) and her family. Devout Christian and prude Marianne overhears their conversation and soon the whole school knows of Olive’s (fake) sexual encounter. Rather than own up to her lie, Olive sinks deeper into slutdom by dressing provocatively and entering into transactions with unpopular guys to give them fake sexual encounters.
Featuring probably the coolest teen comedy parents (Clarkson and Tucci) and a charming performance from Stone, Easy A scores very highly on recommendability and with a runtime of 92 minutes, repeat viewing as well. This warming tonic of a film scores a very respectable overall rating of 4.30.

Episode # 243 Howl's Moving Castle
Em (Verbal Diorama podcast) and Clare (W-Rated podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Clare’s choice Howls Moving Castle.
Howl's Moving Castle is a 2004 Japanese Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. Howls Moving Castle blends fantasy, multiple kingdoms, wizardry, romance and strong anti-war messages.
A young woman called Sophie is a victim of a spell cast on her by the Witch of the Waste, who transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. To try and break the curse she follows a turnip head scarecrow to Howls Castle and jumps onboard as a cleaning lady. While onboard she befriends Howls apprentice Markl and a fire demon named Calcifer, who makes a deal with her to help her break the spell.
To sub or the dub? The English dub of Howls Moving Castle stars Jean Simmons, Emily Mortimer, Lauren Bacall, Christian Bale (on top form), Josh Hutcherson and Billy Crystal (particularly brilliant as Calcifer) and is recommended.
Howls Moving Castle has stunning animation and weird and wonderful characters so it is no surprise that it scores very highly for recommendability, even slightly lower scores for small screen still give it a very respectable overall rating of 4.31.

Episode # 241 About A Boy with Rich Nelson and Catrin Lowe from Don‘t You Want Me? podcast
Rich Nelson and Catrin Lowe from Don‘t You Want Me? podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Rich’s choice About A Boy.
About A Boy is a 2002 comedy-drama starring Hugh Grant, Toni Collette and Nicholas Hoult, directed by Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz it is based on the Nick Hornby novel of the same name.
Grant stars as Will, a man child living without responsibilities, commitments or having to work living off royalties from a song his father wrote. He meets Marcus (Hoult) on the day his mother Fiona (Collette) attempts suicide. The two strike up an unlikely friendship and teach each other life lessons.
Knowing and winking at the audience (references to everyone's favourite film mum Collette being in The Sixth Sense) with an excellent Badly Drawn Boy film soundtrack About A Boy manages the delicate balance of comedy and seriousness to leave you all warm and fuzzy inside.
Scores for recommendability were solid if not sensational and a high small screen score gives About A Boy a decent overall rating of 3.82.

Episode # 240 Cats with Josh Pappenheim and Sam Clements from 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest
Josh Pappenheim (Truly Happily Madison Podcast) and Sam Clements (90 Minutes or Less Film Fest podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Josh’s choice Cats. Considered one of the worst films of all time and was only released in 2019, Cats is a “live-action” film based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical of the same name. It inexplicably stars Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, Francesca Hayward and unfortunately James Corden as cats - sort of human size, some with breasts, some without and alternating between walking like a cat but also then like a human. Some cats wear clothes, often shoes, fur coats and even fur that zips off. All the cats have human hands and Judi Dench’s Old Deuteronomy has a wedding ring! There isn’t much in the way of plot - unless you know what a Jellicle cat is and the digital fur technology is more demonic than innovative. Will they ever release the bumhole cut? This sung-through musical is best described as deranged nonsense and astonishingly scores extremely high on recommendability. Some sense prevailed for the remaining scores but Cats still managed to score a very respectable 3.63 overall. [supsystic-tables id=252]

Episode # 239 Apollo 13 with Francesca Turauskis and Meg Rozfozz from On The Outside Pod
Fran Turauskis (On the Outside podcast, Pod Bible digital editor) and Meg Fozzard (writer and disability rights campaigner) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Fran’s choice Apollo 13. Apollo 13 is a 1995 docudrama film directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Ed Harris and Gary Sinise. Based on Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13, a book by astronaut Jim Lovell and journalist Jeffrey Kluger, it tells the true story of the failed Apollo 13 lunar landing mission. Apollo 13 was a huge success on its release making over $355 million worldwide and was nominated for nine Oscars (winning for Best Film Editing and Best Sound) but did it win over Meg who doesn’t like films set in space and space jargon? Recommendability scores were high for Apollo 13, even from Meg but lower for repeat viewing due to the docudrama/real-life story and small screen giving an overall rating of 3.46. Episode # 238 Twister with Arlie Adlington and Kate Leaver from Whos A Good Dog
Arlie Adlington (award-winning audio producer) and Kate Leaver (Who’s A Good Dog podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Arlie’s choice Twister. Twister is a 1996 disaster film directed by Jan de Bont with a screenplay by Michael (ER, Jurassic Park) Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. It stars Bill Paxton as Bill, a retired storm chaser-turned weatherman and Helen Hunt as Jo, a meteorologist obsessed with chasing tornadoes and trying to deploy a tornado research device - they also happen to be ex husband and wife. Along with a supporting cast of twister perverts including Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jeremy Davies and Jake Busey they are in a race against tornados to successfully test Dorothy and her magic balls. Twister has a surprisingly low body count (high flying cow count) for a disaster film (the dog does not die) and also quite a low action rate apart from a couple of decent scenes - just about enough to sustain for its near two hour runtime. Twister is quite an usual film - flying cows - and it is also a very 90s film with plenty of unintentional hilarious moments and dodgy CGI. Scores for recommendability for Twister were pretty decent, less high for repeat viewing, mainly because of the long runtime but it still manages to score a respectable 3.39 overall. Episode # 237 My Neighbor Totoro with Carrie Morrison and Jessica Regan from The Best Pick movie podcast
Carrie Morrison (Lights, Carrie, Action podcast) and Jessica Regan (Best Pick podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Carrie’s choice My Neighbor Totoro. My Neighbor Totoro is the 1988 iconic Studio Ghibli animation. Written and directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki it tells the story of sisters Satsuki and Mei who move to a rural setting while their mother is unwell and in hospital. One day, Mei follows two spirits into the forest and finds a sleeping "Totoro" - a sort of chinchilla type animal - and falls asleep on its belly. Satsuki at first doesn’t believe Mei that the Totoro exists but later when they are waiting for the bus in the rain Totoro appears. With a run time of under 90 minutes My Neighbor Totoro is light on narrative but heavy on fantasy and animism - the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. It is impossible not to be drawn into the fantasy and charm of Totoro and this was heavily reflected in the scores. The recommendability scores for My Neighbor Totoro were very high but a little lower for engagement giving an overall rating of 4.04. [supsystic-tables id=249]

Three homeless people Gin - a middle-aged alcoholic, Hana - a transgender woman and Miyuki - teenage runaway discover an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve and end up on a wild adventure when they try to reunite baby and mother. Son himself calls Tokyo Godfathers “a twisted sentimental story” despite the Christmas setting and Three Wise Men elements that is where the warming festive spirit ends as the story progresses there is murder, beatings, suicide and the reality of being homeless. This might sound depressing but there is also humour and hope. [supsystic-tables id=248] Recommendations for Tokyo Godfathers were very high - even from Helen! Katie Smith-Wong (Movie Marker, Film Stories, New Scientist) and Kelechi Ehenulo (Confessions From A Geek Mind, Film Stories, VultureHound Magazine) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Katie’s choice The Power of the Dog. The Power of the Dog is a 2021 release from acclaimed director Jane Campion based on Thomas Savage's 1967 novel. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil an alpha male cowboy/repressed homosexual, Jesse Plemons as his brother George, Kirsten Dunst as Rose, George’s new wife and Kodi Smit-McPhee as her effeminate and quiet son Peter. Phil’s perfect set up is throw into disarray when his brother George marries widower Rose who moves into their family home with her son Peter and threatens tightly controlled world. He retaliates by bullying and intimating Rose and starts an unpredictable relationship with Peter. The Power of the Dog was a highlight at London Film Festival 2021 and its arrival on Netflix comes with high expectations. Despite the Western setting The Power of the Dog is more a film about gender identity and psychological power with a third act reveal that comes out of nowhere than cowboys and horses. [supsystic-tables id=247] Flixwatcher scores for The Power of the Dog for recommendability and engagement were very high but lower scores for small screen viewing gives a very respectable overall rating of 4.16. Episode # 234 School of Rock with Sophie Davies and Barbara Mendes-Jorge from It’s an S Pod Thing & Over/underrated music podcast
Sophie (It’s An S Pod Thing!) and Barbara (Over/underated: a music podcast with Babs and Fran) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Sophie’s choice School of Rock. School of Rock is a 2003 comedy directed by Richard Linklater and starring Jack Black as Dewey Finn, a failing rock musician who pretends to be his best friend Ned filling in as a substitute teacher and consequently uses his pupils to enter a Battle of the Bands competition. It also co-stars Joan Cusack as the uptight Principal ”Roz" Mullins, Sarah Silverman as Ned’s nagging girlfriend and Mike White (who wrote the film) as Ned Schneebly, Dewy’s best friend and the real Mr Schneebly. Not a musical but there is a stage musical adaptation it was the highest-grossing music-themed comedy of all time until 2015. If High Fidelity was Black’s breakout film, School of Rock put him firmly into the mainstream and it is very much his film and still his most known and loved character. [supsystic-tables id=246] School of Rock scored very highly for recommendability and repeat viewing from Sophie and Babs but slightly lower scores for engagement gives an overall rating of a very respectable 4.08. Episode # 233 Mean Girls with Zachary Fortais-Gomm and Elizabeth Campbell from Realms of Peril and Glory
Zach Fortais-Gomm and Liz Campbell from Realms of Peril and Glory (actual play podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Liz’s choice Mean Girls. Mean Girls is a 2004 teen comedy written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark (Freaky Friday) Waters. It stars Lindsay Lohan as newcomer Cady, a superb Rachel McAdams as Regina George the rich popular leader of The Plastics, Lacey Chabert as Gretchen Wieners and Amanda Seyfried, in her breakout role as Karen Smith, the sweet but dumb member of The Plastics. Cady arrives at High School having been homeschooled previously in “Africa” and befriends two outsiders Janis and Damien who convince her to befriend Regina and The Plastics to take revenge. Even if you haven’t seen Mean Girls you will have seen the numerous GIFs and memes (93 and counting) it has spawned - ever worn pink on a Wednesday?!? It has quite possibly become the defining teen film in popular culture. Despite some aspects having aged like (according to Zach) milk - the casual racism and sexual relationships - questionable whether underage grooming by male teachers was funny even in 2004 but Mean Girls is top tier teen film. [supsystic-tables id=245] Recommedability scores for Mean Girls were high - with fives from Liz, Zach and Helen and strong scoring across the remaining categories gives a very high overall rating of 4.28. Episode # 232 Dirty Dancing with Rich Nelson and Catrin Lowe from Don’t You Want Me Podcast
Catrin Lowe and Rich Nelson from Don‘t You Want Me? podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Catrin’s choice Dirty Dancing. Dirty Dancing is a 1987 romantic drama written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino and stars Patrick Swayze as dance instructor Johnny Castle and Jennifer Grey as Baby. Set in the summer of 1963, Baby and her family are on vacation at Kellerman’s - an American version of Butlins - in the Catskills. After Baby intervenes to help Johnny’s dance partner Penny with an abortion she steps in to dance with Johnny and goes on a journey of self-discovery. Marketed as a ‘chick flick’ - dancing, pink font, the mega-hit ‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life' by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, peak Patrick Swayze - Dirty Dancing has much more depth and nuances than a lot of people give it credit for. For a mainstream film to include botched abortions as a major plot point in the 1980s was a brave move. [supsystic-tables id=244] Scores for recommendability for 14 Peaks were high from guests and Flixwatcher. As with documentaries the repeat viewing score was much slower giving a very respectable overall score of 4.10. 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible premieres on Netflix UK on Monday 29 November. Episode # 230 Notting Hill with Arlie Adlington and Kate Leaver from Whos A Good Dog podcast
Kate Leaver (Who’s A Good Dog podcast) and award-winning audio producer Arlie Adlington join Flixwatcher remotely to review Kate’s choice Notting Hill. Notting Hill is a 1999 romantic comedy from writer Richard Curtis, starring Hugh Grant as bumbling Englishman Will and Julia Roberts as Hollywood actress Anna Scott who enters his life after a meet-cute involving orange juice. Is Notting Hill the best rom-com? Debatable for Kate and Arlie yes, for Helen definitely not. Views were mixed, trite and overly sentimental and controversial for its ethnic cleansing of an area of London famous for its Caribbean carnival event or is the character of Anna Scott actually really funny and Notting Hill a quirky take on the regular guy dating a celebrity? [supsystic-tables id=242] The scores were equally as divisive with Kate and Arlie giving straight fives for recommendability and Kobi and Helen much lower. Its two hours plus runtime was also a turnoff and resulted in low repeat viewing score to give Notting Hill an overall rating of 3.89. What do you guys think? Have you seen Notting Hill? Episode # 229 American Graffiti with Jake Cunningham and Michael Leader from Ghibliotheque
Michael Leder and Jake Cunningham (Ghibliotheque - A Podcast About Studio Ghibli and Ghibliotheque: The Unofficial Guide to the Movies of Studio Ghibli) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Michael’s choice American Graffiti. In a galaxy far, far away in 1973 George Lucas directed American Graffiti. Set in 1962 it tells the story of a group of teenagers on their last night in their hometown (based on Lucas’ own hometown of Modesto) before they go to college. Notable cast members include Richard Dreyfuss as Curt Henderson, Ron Howard as Steve Bolander, Charles Martin Smith as Terry "The Toad" Fields, Cindy Williams as Laurie Henderson and the debut of Harrison Ford as Bob Falfa. American Graffiti couldn’t be more different to what would later be probably the biggest cinema franchise ever, there are no effects, no other worlds, just a group of kids cruising around in Ford Thunderbirds, hanging around at drive-ins, trying to get lucky and unaware of what the arrival of the 1970s and the Vietnam War will bring. [supsystic-tables id=241] American Graffiti had a mixed response from Flixwatcher and guests, Kobi and Helen were less enamoured than Michael and Jake and the recommedability scores were reflected in this difference of opinion. Strong scores from Michael and Jake across the remaining categories help to give an overall score of 3.45. What do you guys think? Have you seen American Graffiti? What did you think? Episode # 228 The Untouchables with Tiberius Hardy and Cam Smith from SpyHards Podcast
Cam the Provocateur and Agent Scott from SpyHards podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Cam’s choice The Untouchables. The Untouchables is the 1987 Brian De Palma’s Prohibition-era gangster film, loosely based on the activities of Al Capone and ‘The Untouchables’ - an enforcement group led by Eliot Ness who helped bring down Capone. It stars Robert De Niro as Al Capone, Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, Andy García as George Stone, Charles Martin Smith as Oscar Wallace and Sean Connery (in an Oscar-winning role) as Jim Malone. Pretty violent for its day - it opens with a child being blown up and there is the notorious baseball bat scene it also plays fast and loose with the real historical moments from the 1930s. But this is De Palma and The Untouchables makes up for historical inaccuracy with spectacular set pieces, for example, Battleship Potemkin homage of the Odessa Steps sequence. The Untouchables is also notable for Connery’s “Irish” accent, voted by Empire Magazine as the worst accent on film, however, Connery steals every scene he is in and the accent is just about forgivable. [supsystic-tables id=240] First-time watcher Scott was dubious going in but gave it a full five (a six if he could!) for recommendability - same as Cam, Helen and Kobi giving it full marks for that category. The Untouchables scores highly across all Flixwatcher categories to score an impressive 4.20 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Untouchables? What did you think? Episode # 227 Oxygene with Paul Breen and Ben Mercer from Have You Scene This Podcast
Ben and Paul from Have You Scene This? Podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Ben’s choice Oxygène. Oxygène (Oxygen) is. 2021 French science fiction thriller released by Netflix starring Mélanie Laurent and directed by Alexandre (Crawl) Aja. Laurent plays a woman who wakes up in a airtight cryogenic medical unit. She discovers she is trapped and experiencing a medical emergency and has no memory of how she got there or who she is. Assisted by M.I.L.O (Medical Interface Liaison Officer voiced by Mathieu Amalric) she must work out who and where she is before the oxygen runs out. Oxygène is a fairly decent entry in the single person (Locke, Buried, Moon) genre and “significantly better than expected” mostly due to the performance by Laurent who holds her own and commands your attention for its lean one hour and 40 min runtime. [supsystic-tables id=239] Oxygène was rated solidly on recommendability and engagement from guests and Flixwatcher but less highly on repeat viewing to score a very respectable 3.63 overall. Episode # 226 8 Mile with Petros Patsilivas and Ariane Anantaputri from The Breadcrumbs Collective
Petros Patsilivas (Caged In: Coppola Connections) and Ariane Anantaputri (A Drip Town Lemory Mane: The Podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Petros’ choice 8 Mile. 8 Mile is a 2002 vaguely auto biographical drama starring Eminem as B-Rabbit, a white rapper struggling to launch his rap career with support from Kim Basinger as his trailer trash mom, Brittany Murphy as his love interest and Mekhi Phifer as his pal Future (loosely based on Eminem’s real-life close friend and rapper Proof). Set in 1995, B-Rabbit hates his blue-collar job and wants to be a rapper but freezes on stage and is humilated. To build his confidence his best friend Future pushes him to enter a revenge rap battle where he succeeds. Lacking in a real character arc, 8 Mile is a standard underdog story and that is elevated by a central performance from Eminem. [supsystic-tables id=238] Eminem picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Lose Yourself - even though it only features briefly in the end credits - the music and rap battles still stand up in 8 Mile (even if a majority of the language is pretty homophobic). Recommendability from guests and Flixwatcher were mixed and scores for repeat viewing were low. Let down by its longer than necessary runtime of one hour and 50 minutes 8 Mile scores 3.45 overall. Episode # 225 Kill Bill vol 1 with Carrie Morrison and Jessica Regan The Best Pick movie podcast
Jessica Reagan (Best Pick podcast) and Carrie Morrison (Lights, Carrie, Action podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Jess’s choice Kill Bill Vol 1. Kill Bill Vol 1 is the first part of Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman’s homage to martial arts, samurai, blaxploitation, spaghetti western, grind house films revenge epic. Thurman stars as ‘The Bride’, beaten, shot and left for dead on her wedding day by Bill (David Carradine) and the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, and Vivica A. Fox) after she tries to leave and start a new life. Released in 2003, prior to the #MeToo movement and before the stories of the abuse and car crash Thurman experienced during the filming, Kill Bill represents peak Tarantino. With nods to his own back catalogue (Mia Wallace’s ’square’ and Clarence Worley’s sunglasses) as well as the usual suspects (Game of Death’s jumpsuit and motorbike and Lady Snowblood) Kill Bill is a non stop violent and often funny femme fronted revenge epic. [supsystic-tables id=237] Thurman completely owns the role - it is such a powerful, physical and iconic role and nothing can take that away from her. Kill Bill Vol 1 scores fairly highly for recommendability and as with all Tarantino’s films a high repeat viewing is recommended. It is let down however by a much lower small screen score to give Kill Bill Vol 1 an overall score of 3.96. What do you guys think? Have you seen Kill Bill vol 1? What did you think? Stardust is a 2007 fantasy action romance directed by Matthew Vaughn and co-written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman. It also boasts an ensemble cast featuring Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais, Jason Flemyng, Rupert Everett, Peter O'Toole, Michelle Pfeiffer, Henry Cavill, Mark Strong and Robert De Niro, with narration by Ian McKellen. A star (Danes) falls from the sky and becomes the quest for Tristan (Cox) to bring back for his beloved Victoria (Miller) so he can marry her and three ancient witches - led by Lamia (Pfeiffer) who need to eat the heart of the star to regain their powers and youth. [supsystic-tables id=236] Stardust scored highly from Matt, Daryl and Kobi for recommendability but less highly from Helen. A lower engagement score from everyone gives Stardust an overall score of 3.58. What do you guys think? Have you seen Stardust? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 223 The Half of it with Caris Rianne and Neha Jay from Not Having It All Podcast
Neha and Caria from Not Having It All podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Neha’s choice The Half of It. The Half of It is a 2020 Netflix American coming-of-age comedy drama written and directed by Alice Wu. It stars Leah Lewis as Ellie Chu a shy Chinese-American, Daniel Diemer as jock Paul Munsky who gets Ellie to write his love letters to Alexxis Lemire’s Aster Flores. Set in the small town of Squahamish, Ellie lives with her widowed father, the station master at the local station. She reluctantly agrees to write romantic letters on behalf of Paul - a modern Cyrano de Bergerac - and finds herself falling for Aster in the process. The Half of It has a lot of heart, it’s impossible not to fall in love with Ellie, watching her slowly fall in love with Aster and form a genuinely touching friendship with Paul. It also resolutely does not follow the conventional paths of teen comedy dramas, which is refreshing for the teen genre. [supsystic-tables id=235] The scores for The Half of It was very high for recommendability and engagement, only losing points for repeat viewing to give a very respectable overall score of 3.78 What do you guys think? Episode # 222 Adaptation with Emma Kathryn and Paul Costello from Yearbook Committee podcast
Paul Costello and Emma Kathryn from The Yearbook Committee podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Paul’s choice Adaptation. Adaptation is the 2002 Charlie Kaufman comedy-drama directed by Spike Jonze and starring Nicolas Cage as Kaufman and his fictional twin brother Donald. It also stars Meryl Streep as real life author Susan Orlean and an Oscar winning Chris Cooper as John Laroche. Adaptation fuses fiction - Donald, the relationship between Orlean and Laroche - with real life - Kaufman’s writers block and The Orchid Thief - the end result is a mind bending mash of genres. Adaptation is equally funny and heartbreaking at the same time and often unexpectedly. Cage delivers a career best and received an Oscar nomination as both the doubting and obsessive Charlie and the happy go lucky and dorky Donald. [supsystic-tables id=234] However, Adaptation is weird and not for everyone and that is the caveat for recommendability scores. A score lower repeat viewing but higher for engagement gives Adaptation and overall score of 3.97. What do you guys think? Have you seen Adaptation? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 221 Demolition Man with Simon Williams and David Trumble from You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat film quiz
Simon Williams (You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat film quiz) and David Trumble (artist/cartoonist/illustrator) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Simon’s choice Demolition Man. Demolition Man is 1993 sci-fi action comedy film starring Sylvester Stallone as John Spartan (The Demolition Man), Wesley Snipes as Simon Phoenix and Sandra Bullock as Lieutenant Lenina Huxley. In the year 2032, Spartan and Phoenix are cryogenically frozen after the events in 1996 where hostages were killed and in this future crime has been eradicated in the newly formed San Angeles (a merger of Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara). After Phoenix is thawed during a parole hearing and escapes, Spartan is thawed to chase him down and in doing so leaves a trail of demolition. Primarily an action film, Demolition Man is also very funny and quite ridiculous, the myth of the purpose of the three seashells lives on today and holds up as a satire still today. [supsystic-tables id=233] Demolition Man was a popular rewatch for Flixwatcher and guests and it scored highly on recommendability but less high on engagement to score a very respectable 4.05 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Demolition Man? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Episode # 220 Da 5 Bloods with Ashanti Omkar and Akin Aworan from The Swinging Palm Tree Podcast
Akin Aworan (The Swinging Palm Tree Podcast) and Ashanti Omkar (film critic and journalist) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Akin’s choice Da 5 Bloods. Da 5 Bloods is the Netflix 2020 Spike Lee joint. Paul (Delroy Lindo - unbelievably snubbed by the Academy), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), Melvin (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) and their squad leader Norman (Chadwick Boseman in one of his final roles) are the “Bloods”. A close knit squad of US Army black soldiers during the Vietnam war who after securing the site of a C.I.A plane and it’s cargo of gold, decide to bury it for themselves and in the process Norman is killed by gunfire. Present day a landslide has made the buried treasure reachable and the remaining Bloods plus David’s son Paul head back into the jungle to Repatriate the body of Norman and retrieve their gold. Da 5 Bloods is a mixed bag, the ensemble cast is incredible - Delroy was robbed - but no effect was made to de age the actors for the flashbacks, the contribution by black US soldiers in the Vietnam war is finally recognised but there are scenes that wouldn’t be out of place in Tropic Thunder than take it from satire to farce. With a run time of over two hours and 30 minutes it’s also longer than it needs to be. [supsystic-tables id=231] Flixwatcher and guests scored Da 5 Bloods quite highly on recommendability, less highly on repeat viewing (mostly due to the excessive runtime) and engagement (also due to the excessive runtime) to give an overall score of 3.56. What do you guys think? Have you seen Da 5 Bloods? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
