I have never seen this movie (can you believe it?) so Charles suggested it for July 4th this year! I loved this movie for so many reasons but basically the willingness of these townspeople to ignore warnings of a Great White shark that has killed multiple people at this very beach is alarming. We get into so many details we loved about the story including: the evil Mayor of the town, Hooper being super stylish, and an interesting FMK of our main characters.off-topic rants but not really include many stories and stats about sharks, megalodons, and why the sea shouldn't be trifled with---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! 174: Behind the Music Videos | Volume 1
The time has come. I finally recorded an episode on my own. A first time here on the show. It was hard deciding although I did do an internet poll and 'top music videos of the 90s' won. This took me a while to get in the mood to do but I selected these videos not really as random but as a good representation of all these varying types of narratives that I loved in videos during my teenage years. I did some behind the scenes research and cruised some message boards to dig deeper. I basically talk about what these meant to me at a time when the art of the music video meant so much.Watch the music videos: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBOB4Hahu9llH-Gw2dGTjWMiiGt0_I4T1&si=M0-mgRBOJCaV85HY on Spotify : https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5dZ1Pt0xNpCY82KoJUzXIn?si=a38090cbad2e40bb--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Swim along with us as we try to make sense of this literal insane story, the weird acting, and the questionable fashion choices. Like, why does Madison look like she works in a bank? We get off track then find our way back in the lane to talk the ins and outs of the oddly high body count, the weird teen obsession film genre of the 90s/00s, and why this totally should have had a sequel. You, Me and 5 Bucks 013: A chat w/ Black Girl Film Club
And we're back with another interview episode! I did promise I would do more of these this year and what a better way to start than to chat to Ashley and Britney of Black Girl Film Club Podcast! As per usual we were all over the place when it comes to the topics we covered. The way we analyze films these days is always so interesting to me. We touch on how the discovery and reviewing of films has changed in the age of social media. We get into what new films we're looking forward to, our reality tv watching habits, why people are just waking up to Mark-Paul Gosselaar, going through actor eras (binging filmographies), politics of awards season, and I mean we talked about it ALL! ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! 173: I'm not going back. | Born Into Exile (1997)
Some considerable time has passed since we last explored the 'movie of the week' genre on the podcast. Luckily, if we ever run out of 90s films to talk about, there are literally thousands to pull from. This is one that has really stuck with me since I was a teenager. I remember taping this from tv and cutting the commercials out so I could watch it back uninterrupted. Out of all of the films, this particular one I watched ALL the time. I got Charles on this episode who knew nothing about it to watch it for the episode. While you think it may be a more lighthearted tale of a girl who leaves home, that is most definitely not the whole story. It gets pretty dark when this teenager is coping with how to survive on the streets with her 19 year old (eek) boyfriend/partner in crime. We talk the ins and outs of the story and just how much happens to them along the way, the holes in the story, and why we wish there was a more detailed ending to this tale. 172: If you wanna smoke, you can smoke in the trunk. | Excess Baggage (1997)
What a way to welcome the New Year. Excess Baggage is a film from 1997 that almost takes you there but then falls short overall. The casting honestly saved this whole project but it really puts into perspective the importance of a tight story and seamless collaboration. This film was riddled with re-writes and re-shoots which is typically not a good sign, however watching for the charm and nostalgia factor really made up for it. Me and Mikey spent this episode pointing out the story holes, the drama on set during filming, and I drool over Benicia Del Toro. Well, we're here. Yes I had to talk about Saltburn, the recent release by Emerald Fennell. I can't remember a time where I've seen a film twice in the theater within a week. There was just something that grabbed me from the first trailer viewing that I knew I had to see this on the big screen. Because I haven't shut up about it over the past three weeks I had to enlist both Charles and Mikey that I saw it with on two different occasions for this special episode. 169: So much for the first coma. | Reversal of Fortune (1990)
In keeping with our 'domestic drama' theme we wandered into by accident, we're talking Reversal of Fortune from 1990. Based on the true story and legal case of Claus von Bülow told through the eyes of his lawyer Alan Dershowitz. This was Charles' pick and from my glance of this trailer I thought I was in for an erotic thriller of epic proportions but turns out it was a legal drama of all legal dramas. Although, anything with Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close is immediately intriguing. At this point I would watch them both read the phone book in a poorly lit room. We get into some of our favorite fashion looks (there were MANY), the magic of Christine Baranski, more reasons to love Jeremy Irons, and a mini Oscars rage moment that Glenn Close wasn't nominated. We also have cemented this as a Christmas movie. 🎄Off-topic rants include: Michael Crichton's Micro, law school practices, how the public should vote for future movies to put into production--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! It popped into my head and I was sure that Jai would be up to do an episode on it. Much to my surprise this was her first time watching and this was probably my second or third watch. This film is an incredible true story of a 13 year old girl Christiane F. taking place in mid 70s West Berlin. I was so focused on the performances and depictions of drug abuse and the desperation of youth at that time. In contrast the acting feels so raw and real as if you're watching a documentary. We found a copy on YouTube and it's one of those films you have to see to believe. Some points we mentioned are the facts of the real Christiane F., a 2016 Gucci campaign "inspired" by this story, and the musical factor of having this story set to David Bowie songs.---GIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE to the main Fashion Grunge Podcast feed on (mostly) 90s films!Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Jai @jai_stylefactoryFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletter Instagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

166: Midnight margaritas! | Practical Magic (1998)
What a cute little movie! A great way to end off this October season and a perfect vibe for this Halloween! This is my first time watching this one and although I feel like I've seen it through film stills on Tumblr already. Nothing could have prepared me for how I want to LIVE inside of this movie. In the house, garden, and especially with the coolest Aunts in the galaxy. Me and Mikey covered this one and even though he's seen it multiple times, it's still every bit as exciting. Our only gripes were that the story seemed a bit weird in the middle. While we were hoping for more of a Thelma and Louise type vibe it went a bit more Exorcist. We cover the amazing fashion and incredible resume of the costume designer, Judianna Makovsky and obsess over another successful 90s soundtrack. Luckily Jules had never heard of this one and we get her first time watch thoughts. I have to say that Misery has been on my list to watch and review for a minute. This really is the perfect film for the October season. Well it's October season and we're here to bring the thrills and chills. Charles picked this one and by about 20 mins in I was terrified. The concept of any type of abduction is terrifying, alien or not. While this was released in '93, its based on a true story that happened in the 70s. Another classic example in the 90s of studio interference that ruined what could have been a standout film. With a great cast and a disappointing story trajectory, we were left wanting wayyy more at the end of this. Me and Jai only watched for Queen Winona. Granted, she tried to carry this film but ultimately the script was lacking and she dine have much help in terms of a strong actor in the lead role. Here we are. Another classic film of the 90s that I am just watching for the first time. I'm not as familiar with the Coen Brother's work so this is a newer genre for me. Fashion Chat: Peter Do at Helmut Lang, the Tabi swiper, changes at Supreme, the future of i-D
It's been a while since me and Jai recorded a proper fashion chat episode. We talk on the phone all the time about what's going on in fashion and there were some things before our FW collection review that I wanted to touch on. We start out talking our underwhelming feelings on the new Helmut Lang collection, Tremaine Emory leaving Supreme, my recent print magazine purchases, Karlie Kloss possibly buying i-D , the Tabi swiper, new TikTok creator discoveries, and some other random bitsThings we mentioned:Hannah E on TikTokThe Tabi Swiper Story on TikTok --- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! If you're looking for a seedy, movie of the week type film that almost takes you there but not quite...look to Devil in the Flesh from 1998. I had seen some of the stills one night on Tumblr, and I enlisted Mikey to chat about our first time thoughts. Well, in this film we didn't get a Final Analysis but boy did we get a whiplash of a story. Based on the movie poster I thought I was getting this racy erotic thriller and while we kinda did, we ended up getting baited and switched in a good way. Me and Charles had a good first time watch with some surprising results. The fashion, the film noir structure, and the nod to Hitchcock we definitely noticed. She focuses on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, My So Called Life, Dawson's Creek, The OC, Freaks and Geeks, Glee, and Friday Night Lights. We basically just a have a super fun chat about some of our favorite nostalgic moments of late 90s television. My So Called Life, Dawson's Creek, and Freaks and Geeks were the shows we focused on as the others I haven't seen. 158: Do you ever get the feeling you're being watched? | Stealing Beauty (1996)
Imagine a wanderlust summer in a sun drenched villa on the hill in Tuscany. That's where this film takes us in a perfect summer film. This being Liv Tyler's first starring role is insane because she floats through this whole film like the beautiful dream that she is. Me and Jai took a walk down memory lane with our own similar stories of unforgettable summers away from home. We didn't find out a lot in terms of behind the scenes, but we do touch on the questionable history of the directors previous works. Including some aspects of this story which could have done without the male gaze. As always we get into the fashion and music which are top notch. This has sleeper soundtrack you may not be expecting with Portishead, Hole, Liz Phair, Nina Simone, etc... Ok, so for this one I took a chance and found a film that both me and Mikey haven't seen before. I vividly remember seeing tv spots during the 1997 MTV VMAs. The casting immediately was my draw, that and being directed by Oliver Stone. Well, suffice to say that we were underwhelmed with this script in particular. The beautiful cinematography by Robert Richardson was particularly striking despite the lacking story. What are you even doing with your life if you aren't jumping out of a plane or off the side of a building at 60 being a literal spy? Since it's Mission: Impossible season it was only right to review the one that started it all, the 1996 chapter. As children of the 80s both me and Jai are super familiar with Tom Cruise as an entity and every year he seems to ratchet up our collective blood pressure with each installment in the franchise. We both remember seeing this film back in the day and it was such a fun ride. Well, it's time to dust off the old movie vault for this one. I put up a poll on IG to see if anyone has heard or even seen this film and it was a mystery to most. Now, this film I first saw ages ago at Mikey's house and seeing it again all these years later just brought me such delight. This quirky indie rom com stars Sean Hayes before he was known as Jack from Will and Grace. He's a Polaroid (ahh!) photographer who falls in love with a cute coffee barista boy (how 90s) who is a perfect facsimile of Brad Pitt in the Meet Joe Black era. It's all but almost disappeared from the internet so I hope that this will revive your memories if you have seen it or encourage you to track it down if this is a new find. You can actually feel the heat in this film. It instantly transports you into this neighborhood all taking place during the Son of Sam murders in 1970s New York City. Immediately there were similarities to the DC sniper case that we both lived through that we touched on. Spike Lee's film perfectly captured the paranoia and utter fear that gripped the whole city, but within this specific community. 149: Are we on 'Cops' again? | Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
in the 90s you could always count on a dark comedy. It's the best decade for these out of control stories with the most offensive humor. While society has changed light years it seems in about 20 years, there are still these 'time capsule' films that are so wild you can't even believe they were made. I questioned this very point when I watched Drop Dead Gorgeous about the literal explosive dark world of a local beauty pageant in Minnesota. This was my first time watching and Charles hit this one again right on the head. In order to fill a schedule with over 270 episodes the amount of storylines that 90210 produced is just out there. Since we aren't devoting the entire show to recapping the show me and Charles decided to pick some of our standouts and it has to do with the vices and party drugs that crept into the show. At first we take a lighthearted fun approach to underground rave culture with (shock!) bad girl Emily Valentine. In Season 2's U4EA (1991) episode we get into the fashion that's amazing, Emily's vibe and how much Brenda hates her, and how Brandon is actually cool to be around for once. Now, it takes a different and darker turn in Season 6's Snowbound (1996) we get a front row seat to the development of 'Cocaine Kelly' and her relationship with "artist" Colin. There are so many iconic moments that we get into about the show as a whole and just how Luke Perry is so amazing and will forever be the glue of the show. 147: Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a kid? | Tommy Boy (1995)
When we talk about formative movies of my childhood, Tommy Boy is top 3. I wore my VHS tape out and finally we're getting to talk about it here on the pod. I enlisted Jules, my 90s comedy buddy to review this one. And HOLY SCHNIKES! The both of us had a literal Baja blast talking this iconic comedy buddy road trip film starring legends Chris Farley and David Spade. We could basically quote the entire thing and we spend the first half of the episode talking about the state of comedy past and present, classic SNL casts, and the literal genius and melancholy of the subject matter.Off-topic rants include: Anna Nicole doc, the new Barbie movie, and comedy films when we were teens--- Get OVER 80 BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show for $5 a month!
