193: They look up to us, they need us, babe. | Another Day in Paradise (1998)
I've been wanting to check this one off the list for a while. With Larry Clark being one of my favorite directors, this was an early one in his filmography. Now, this was a weird one for me. There were certain aspects that I was expecting that didn't really make sense for me. In this episode I worked out the bias I was going into the film with, and explain the concept of a 'that guy' in movies and tv. Off-topic rants include: Twin Peaks and David Lynch, my very lonnggg current watch queue, The Big Hit, and movies of 1998---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! He told me we just had to cover this for the pod and I'm so glad he did. If I didn't already have a crush on Bruce from 'The Fifth Element' , I now am obsessed with John McLean. This film was an 80s corporate office porn dream along with the amazing fashion! 192: You are the most egocentric corpse I've ever met. | An American Werewolf in Paris (1997)
This is one of those 90s movies that really shouldn't have been made. Lucky for you that it was so bad that we still ended up having plenty to say about it. Mikey had the unfortunate experience of seeing this in the theater, but in 1997 we were really spoiled for choice at the cinema each week. It wouldn't be a true exploration of 90s movies if we didn't talk about the duds from time to time. While I wasn't a fan of this hack job of a script that wasted some talented actors, we at least got a good soundtrack. If you watched that BUSH music video for "Mouth" you basically saw the movie. We talk about how Julie Delpy only did the film to pay for her rent, the awkward performance of Tom Everett Scott, and how Julie Bowen had the best part in the entire film. Also, we read some funny Letterboxd reviews. Off-topic rants include: Angelina Jolie & Billy Bob Thornton, Gladiator, Tom Cruise movies---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! A Real Housewives Kick Back w/ Stephen of Creek Talk Podcast
As I've mentioned before on the show, I'm reality tv obsessed. I'm fully versed in the Bravo world and it was such a joy to talk to another Bravo fan! Enter in Stephen from Creek Talk Podcast. We talked in the past about our love of the different cities so it was time that we do an episode on the current seasons! 191: The morgue? She'll be FURIOUS! | Death Becomes Her (1992)
If you can believe it, this is my first watch of this cult classic. I somehow managed to never see it until now and I'm obsessed. Of course Mikey is along to talk one of his comfort films and his immense history with this gem. It works for the October season and this also reminds me of The Substance, I've recently seen. Other points are this amazing wardrobe and the magic of Meryl, Goldie, and hottie Bruce Willis. 190: Now, was I supposed to turn into the skid? | Hideaway (1995)
It's movies like this that make me love the 90s. The ability to make multi genre horror thrillers with a domestic medical drama and demon afterlife subplot is unmatched. I was searching for something to review in October and this has been on my list forever, mostly for the stacked cast. I went in knowing nothing and this was nothing short of a wild ride. I mean Jeff Goldblum as the dad and Alicia Silverstone as the bratty daughter should be reason alone for you to see this. Within the first half of the movie we have demon possession, chunky sweaters, a car accident, and a Pearl Jam reference. Again we have the Pacific Northwest as a backdrop cause (duh, its the 90s) and a very weird and unexplainable Jeremy Sisto.Off-topic rants include: Buffy parallels and Alicia Silverstone being THAT girl in the 90s---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Dark Side of the 90s: Grunge and the Seattle Sound [Patreon Unlocked] 🔓
Yes, this is our last foray into the 'Dark Side of the 90s' Vice series. In keeping with the total and complete theme of FG itself, we just had to talk more about the birth of the Seattle sound and Sub-Pop records. This episode focuses more on the independent label scene and just how corporations really tried to ruin everything. At least there is a silver lining in the fact that Sub-Pop is still kicking as a label and has become a cultural touchstone to the city of Seattle. This episode talks to Bruce Pavitt (Sub-Pop co-founder), Charles Peterson (photographer), and others to get a more complete picture. I have such a vivid memory of watching this in the theater, basically because I was obsessed with the two actors, Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt.Even though it's not a holiday movie like at all, I enlisted Mikey to take a walk down the seedy roads of early 00s forensic true crime-ish films. 189: Hey, ladies, wanna see my spirit stick? | Bring It On (2000)
I'm ashamed to say that this is my first watch of Bring it On. The upside to this is that I loved it and I'm pissed I didn't see it the first go round. I remember everyone talking about it when I was in high school but because I didn't have cheerleaders at any of my schools, the concept of a cheer movie wasn't my bag. This prompted me to create yet another list on Letterboxd categorizing movies I wish I'd seen earlier. Me and Mikey are chatting this comedy classic and take another opportunity to talk about why Kirsten Dunst's filmography CAN'T be beat. The range! 188: Women are lonely in the 90s. It's our new phase. | Gas Food Lodging (1992)
I love reviewing films that have been on my list for ages but haven't watched yet. This was such a great film that I took me way too long watch. Over the past few years this has become a theme, so much that I made (and will add to) another list on Letterboxd about films I was obsessed with on a late viewing. This has now joined the ranks of that list. Gas Food Lodging, directed by Allison Anders is a great drama and coming of age film set in the Southwest. The performances by Fairuza Balk and Ione Skye need to be studied and talked about more. I get into the INCREDIBLE fashion that stemmed from the late 80s, why J. Mascis is great at composing a movie score, and how I loved the end of this story.Off-topic rants include: fashion and music categorization and why you can think of me as the clerk behind the video rental counter ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! It was the thing you could only dream about, to revisit one of your teen idols crushes from back in the day. Since Josh Hartnett wandered into the mainstream (yes he has been working) last year with a part in Oppenheimer and this year in Trap, I had to get Samantha of @lovefool.99 back on the pod to talk one of our favorite actors. What a doozy of a movie to get back to our regularly scheduled programming here on the pod. For this episode we are talking the plot hole ridden and badly acted film from 2000, The In Crowd. Starring Katie Holmes who we all loved from Dawson's Creek, and with Patricia Clarkson playing her mother it immediately caught my attention. With a shoe string budget the story and incredible acting takes such a simple story of family dynamics over a holiday weekend and it spins into such a great story and film to watch this season. Villa Download: Love Island USA Season 6 Eps 15-16
As you have learned from my last interview episode, I'm a big Love Island fan. Even if only a small group of people listen, it will all be worth it for me to get my thoughts out on this show I've been watching for the past 5 years. This is the first of my recaps of this current season (6) of the USA version of this night soap/ dating show. At the start I get into my history with how I started watching the show, my favorite moments of the UK series, and how I currently feel about what's (not) going on in the UK villa right now. On eps 15-16 I get into the aftermath of that Rob and Leah bust up, Liv being necessary to the story, and why I need Miguel and Rob to face off in this villa. 184: No, we could never be sisters. | All Over Me (1997)
It's time to dust off the gritty 90s VHS archives for an honest and gut wrenching film about growing up in NYC, discovering your queer identity, and the complexities of female relationships. Jules is along for this episode where we talk 'All Over Me' from 1997. I first rented this in high school and it has been on my list to watch again. This film grew on us as we compared to other films of the time that feel more like a documentary and a visual portrait. The soundtrack was completely up our alley with bands like Babes in Toyland, Helium, and Patti Smith. The fashion was so realistic and inspires today, we read some Letterboxd reviews, and discuss other intense female friendships on film that we enjoy.Watch the film on Youtube: https://youtu.be/OmfqcIlvd5w?si=xo1q0X8uFDy5agx8---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! 🏝️ I'VE GOT A TEXT! Yes, yes I know it's time to admit that I'm fully into Love Island. I know it's not the typical stuff I cover here on the podcast, but it's a huge part of my brain. So, for this very thing I had to get in contact with Kendrick Tucker of I Ken Not Podcast to talk about it. Being a fan from afar I already knew that we would be able to jump right in.We get into a bit of our Bravo thoughts first, how the new UK season is shaping up and whether or not Joey Essex is a producer plant, the current USA season firing on all cylinders, and give our hot takes and thoughts on some of the classic UK seasons of Love Island. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! We're here and back with one of the best films of the 90s, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar It's Pride month and it was beyond time for us to review it here and who better than Mikey to talk about the long lasting legacy this film has had over the past 30 years. There are so many things that have changed and moved forward but there is still more to be done. We talk a lot about the incredible characters and arcs throughout, how this is one of Mikey's foundational films, the FASHION and BODY, the endless cameos, and how quotable this entire script is. While I know The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert isn't the same film but since they were released within a year of each other we compare and contrast, and explain why they should be seen as a 'double feature'.Off-topic rants include: why we need a costume museum, why we need a spin off series of Noxeema and Clara, LOTR/The Hobbit movie seriesMentioned: Trixie Mattel on Reacts To Wong Foo To Wong Foo Stage Production Trailer---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! You, Me and 5 Bucks 017: A fashion chat w/ Hunter Shires of @highendhomo
I live for an opportunity to talk about fashion and connect with new people. I've followed Hunter @highendhomo on Twitter and been obsessed with his takes on pop culture and fashion so I knew that it would be great to see things from his perspective. Getting another view from someone who is a bit more plugged in than I am makes for such a great back and forth convo. We get into the "cancel culture" aftermath of certain designers, how consumption has changed, the industry when it comes to personal style, celebrities, and our own entry by way of either music or muses. There is talk of current magazines, the revolving door of creative directors, and of course we had to touch on the recent hot topics and whiplash of all the names we've heard thrown around for the next head of Chanel.off-topic rants: current movie and tv faves and the new guard in music ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge]Man, I love a Hitchcock film. There are few directors that give me chills in the best way and he is one of them. As a master of suspense, tension building, and incredible casting there is nothing better in a classic murder mystery story. These are just some of the brilliant aspects of his filmmaking that we still study today. My first watch was when I was super young thanks to my mom. This is one of those stories that has become a comfort film to me now in my adulthood. Adapted from a play, Dial M for Murder mainly takes place inside the apartment of Tony and Margot Wendice and as the story unfolds it's exciting from moment to moment. Me and Charles love the classics, including Ray Milland (woof) and the etherial and later royal Grace Kelly. We talk the behind the scenes. drama and other casting options, how the fashion came together, and questioned how this whole thing could have been solved by having a keychain on your latch key.Off-topic rants include: Oscars rage segment, the Back to the Future series, scandalous old Hollywood movie themes, and we have a grasshopper interruption about 33 mins in--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! 182: You can't rub Ben-Gay on a heartache. | Calendar Girl (1993)
Since Charles has been waiting 30 years to see this film I had fairly reasonable expectations. Thankfully this film you can find on YouTube, but that's about the only place you'll see it. You would think in 1993 a film starring Jason Priestley of 90210 fame involving a road trip to Hollywood would be a smash. Welp, that didn't happen. Most of the time we had no idea what was going on, but we examined this one with today's lens and yikes. We get into why Jerry O'Connell plays the same role over and over, the 60s clothes, and the weirdness of Hollywood 'stalking' Marilyn Monroe in media.Off-topic rants include: Big Brother and The Challenge, Alessandro Nivola, Glen Powell's time to shine, and movies we wanted to walk out of. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Another guest in the house for a trip back to the 90s with our patron saint of the 'TV Movie' , Tori Spelling in Death of a Cheerleader (1994). This was a more complicated story than we originally thought. We didn't end up loving the movie version and how they essentially manipulated us in the end, but the acting performances were pretty stellar. This includes another batch of hilarious Letterboxd reviews. We get into why we were shocked that the story devolved the way it did, the pretty realistic but impressive fashion, and some interesting cameos. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! It's time for another interview series! I've been a student of Meghan's through her insightful TikTok, and I knew that I had to talk to her about being in the epicenter of what became known as 'grunge' in Seattle in the late 80s/90s. We had a time and covered so much ground. Some of the points we chat about include: indie record culture, the death of paper concert tickets, working the famous Nirvana in-store show, and moving to Palm Springs, CA and opening a vintage store.
