Mark Williams-Cook and Erin Sparks have a deep conversation about the current transition happening for SEOs – moving from keyword search volume to intent volume. They opine on zero-volume keywords, PAAs, and Knowledge Graph optimization. He shares his experiences doing SEO for nearly 20 years and delves into some of his recent experiments around PAAs, content scraping, and AI-written content. Brands are admitting publicly to using AI to write their content – How do you think Google responded? Erin and Mordy take a deep dive down the rabbit hole of Search Engine Land and explore ChatGPT, AI content creation and how the indentation of a link in the SERP may impact your organic traffic. The duo asks the tough questions like, “Is ChatGPT coming for your job?” This week’s Barry Blast confirms the completed rollout of Google’s Helpful Content and Link Spam updates, that linking to multiple products in a review may give the page a SERP boost, and Google admits it is challenging to write an SEO case study. 562 | How Google Has Learned with Voice Search w/ Cindy Crum

We’re talking voice search, the Internet of Things, and Google’s Multitask Unified Model with Cindy Krum on this episode of the EDGE. Her breadth of knowledge on these topics and ability to predict the future is nearly endless. So much so, in fact, some might call her the Nostradamus of SEO.  Erin and Cindy dissect the difference between and the importance of Google’s transition from using a keyword-based understanding of the web to an entity understanding. This has major implications for voice and mobile queries, not just SERPs. Lastly, we ask the hard-hitting questions here on the EDGE like, “Can a dog eat an avocado?” and “How long can blue cheese stay in the fridge?” Google knows. 555 | Why Do We See Google as a Person?

555 | Why Do We See Google as a Person?

Norm Vogele, the Onsite Content Strategist for Page One Power, opines on philosophical concepts with Erin Sparks about the inherent dangers of personifying Google. It’s understandable why it happens, but it can lead to false assumptions that get in the way of creating good content, the purpose of which is to help real people find the information they seek. When the sole purpose of content creation and SEO is to satisfy Google, then the crucial starting point of empathy for a human audience with real needs is subverted and long-term success may remain elusive. Google isn’t a person, nor a deity where SEOs serve as priestly intermediaries between it and clients trying to appease a jealous god. The antidote is a better mix of what is ethical and pragmatic. Why do we anthropomorphize Google? As marketers, we have even more of a challenge to steer away from ascribing humanistic traits to the search engine. Marketers can easily fall into being seen as the “bishops” of Google, revealing the will of the almighty “G” by our clients if we’re not careful. The challenge is the continual rewards of ranking and traffic. Writing to win in favor of Google doesn’t always mesh with writing to solve the problem the searcher may have. Writing content that meets the need of the searcher must be the principle we hold. Norm encourages SEOs, and people in general, to stop anthropomorphizing brands and look deeper.  Let’s see how many analogies and metaphors we can fit in… on the EDGE!  Key Segments: [00:07:38] Why do we personify Google? Cindy Krum jumps into the news with Erin to tackle the slew of news this week! A little late, but still really important! Erin blames his kids… Covering articles from Barry Schwartz, Mike Blumenthal, Roger Montti and Fili Wiese, we also jumped into a Twitter thread that revealed something very interesting! Is there going to be a larger focus on structured data from Google to the degree of triggering manual penalties? As Cindy says. “The news this week kind of reinforces the idea that you are in Google's results wherever you are at their leisure and at their discretion. And what they give, they can easily take away.” Check your schema, all - it could be an issue. 534 | Images and Local Search w/Mike Blumenthal

Mike Blumenthal’s second segment on the EDGE takes us into the realm of the value of image optimization for Local Search. It’s a huge conversion factor for businesses that can be easy wins. Check out the incredible tool, AirCam.ai - a service that gives a breakdown of all of the images your business needs for local visibility. Mike gives us his take on the most recent Google updates and how they may affect local visibility. 532 | Local Search Volatility and Google Accountability

532 | Local Search Volatility and Google Accountability

Mike Blumenthal, “Professor Maps” of the Local SEO community, catches up with the EDGE after some time to lay out the volatility he’s seen in local search. Mike’s been focused on the Google Business Profile forums and has seen some pretty striking and concerning developments. Witnessing around 200 review take-downs and close to 2,000 business profile suspensions per month, Mike’s a bit concerned to say the least. Where is Google’s accountability and transparency in responding to these issues? There’s no mechanism to challenge the decision on the review take-downs.  The value of Local Search positioning and consumer interaction is unquestionable. But one question does present itself: who’s property is this, yours or Google’s? Ever listened to a podcast dumpster fire? You’ve got to check this one out. We led with today’s breaking news of Google’s September 2022 Core Update and didn’t rearrange the rest of our headlines. Still - good stories from Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal and Barry. We could only really use two stories out of the six…..probably should have thought that one through a little bit more.
