Ep 315 International Symposium and CCA

It’s been a busy year for Celiac Canada and one highlight has to have been Melissa Secord and Caleigh McAulay RD attending the International Symposium on Celiac Disease held in Sheffield UK earlier this fall. Both Melissa and Caleigh returned with so much information regarding ongoing and upcoming research along with best practices from other countries. Melissa shares with us some new theories for better diagnosis as well as questioning some ideas we have held as fact. Caleigh presented a poster on behalf of Celiac Canada regarding our recent State of Celiac Survey and learned so much from the many sessions and from other dietitians in attendance. Celiac Canada was well represented by Melissa and Caleigh, and I was thrilled to have an enlightening conversation with them about their experiences at the Symposium. Ep 314 November 2024 Roundup

Ep 314 November 2024 Roundup

It’s the beginning of November and that means I get to catch up with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com. Ellen and I speak about the petition being circulated by Celiac Canada regarding a tax benefit to help with the cost of the gluten free diet. This important petition must be signed by November 10th, so if you haven’t signed and it’s before November 10, please follow the link, and send it on to friends and family – there’s strength in numbers! Petition to Change the Way Celiacs Receive a GF Food Tax Credit Recently there was a very broad recall of frozen waffles and pancakes which included some gluten free products and many different brands. Please check the recall notice that Ellen has posted and open your freezer to make sure you don’t have any of the contaminated packages – this is very important. National Recall: Various Brands | Gluten-Free Waffles | Listeria Monocytogenes Cindi Little, the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet has posted a very interesting article about the wheat starch flour blends that are currently being imported from Europe. Ellen and I have a lively discussion. I’ve used the wheat starch, and you may have already eaten it in some commercial gluten free foods. What are We Going to do About Wheat Starch? Have you ever wondered about the “Gluten Friendly” claims on a restaurant menu. Selena DeVries, a Registered Dietitian gives us her take on the term, as well, Ellen and I share our opinions. Ep 312 October 2024 Roundup

Ep 312 October 2024 Roundup

I’m again speaking with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to go over some of the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month and allow me to give my opinions and insight. Sometimes we come across a company that is doing their best to meet our gluten free needs, but may not have the foundational knowledge of the gluten free diet to do so. This was the case with a storefront that sold ice cream and offered their on-site made gluten free cones. Ellen was able to speak with the owner regarding the questionable safety of the cones and now the company is better informed and able to let their celiac customers know they cannot guarantee the cones to be gluten free. Their understanding and current transparency is a plus for us. Ellen also made us aware of a manufacturing change at Prana Foods to no longer offer gluten free oats in their products. There is somewhat of a disconnect between producers and consumers in getting this important information out there. We hear an update on story Ellen and I spoke about in August 2022 when I interviewed author Ann Campanella. Recently Ann has won an award for her book Celiac Mom. You can listen to the original conversation at - https://bit.ly/Ep233CeliacMom. Ellen has discovered a new cookie/dessert jar business that is gluten free and also vegan, so dairy and egg free as well. The special news here is that the products are very decadent and can be shipped across Canada – so if you want to send a tasty gift to someone this might be a good bet! Ep 311 Coaching Through the Gluten Free Diet

On this episode I speak with Kristin Longacre about her experiences initially when her son was diagnosed with food sensitivities and later when she herself was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Living in the US, Kristin found only minimal resources to help her understand the gluten free diet. After struggling to eat gluten free Kristin decided to become a Certified Holistic Nutrition Coach specializing in helping others to master both the gluten free diet and lifestyle. Ep 310 September 2024 Roundup

It’s the beginning of September, and I’m fortunate to have my monthly discussion with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to chat about the articles and happenings she has brought to our attention over the past month. First, I have Ellen explain to me the very impactful discovery that was made at McMaster University in co-operation with other colleagues regarding the “spark” that sets off the gluten reaction. Ellen tackles the “gluten friendly” meal descriptions we’re seeing on menus and looks at what can be done to clarify this situation. We talk about bloating even on a gluten free diet, a topic Selena DeVries RD raised on Instagram. Food trucks are making their mark in our cities, but Gluten Free Food Trucks can be life-changing for those of us uncomfortable attending large public events. Ellen breaks down the gluten free food truck craze on Vancouver Island. My August has been dominated by Camp Celiac and I take some time to talk about our sponsors and how their donations made a huge difference to enhance the camp for everyone. Ep 308 August 2024 Roundup

I’m grateful that Ellen keeps such good tabs on all the celiac and gluten free news as it comes out. She is the first person I go to if I hear of something new and she’s usually already on top of it. As well she is able to vet the articles that come across her desk and give us the information we not only need, but want. This month a great deal focussed on the affordability of the gluten free diet. This is something Celiac Canada is taking very seriously and are working with the whomever will listen in an effort to stem this tide, which is clearly hitting everyone, but it appears is hitting us harder. Ep 305 Celiac Mom Kelsea

On this episode of the podcast, I’m catching up with Kelsea. We spoke previously on Episode 299. I’m a celiac mom, like Kelsea, but my daughter is now an adult, so we have different perspectives on how celiac disease is dealt with for a young child. Many things have changed, but also many things have stayed the same. Not least of which is the panic that sets in when your whole world changes with the diagnosis of a child. Kelsea walks us through how she handles some specific situations and the part that label reading plays as her son gets older. Both Kelsea and I relied heavily on the information from Celiac Canada as it was more reliable than random posts online. You can find out more at www.celiac.ca. Ep 304 June 2024 Roundup

It’s the end of May and I have another opportunity to chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to go over some of the articles and information Ellen has brought to us over the past month. Ellen published an article about a young woman who posted online about a family situation in which she felt her needs to be on a gluten free diet were not being properly considered by other members of her family. Normally, we would side with the person who has special needs, but by reading more about the circumstances, both Ellen and I found fault in the attitude of the woman eating gluten free. You can read more in the link below. We all know there are other medical conditions that those of us with celiac disease are more likely than the general population to have or suffer with. Ellen brings three such conditions that we should at the very least be aware of. Knowledge is power! I mentioned again the recent podcast I produced with Avery about her mentorship program. You can find out more at celiacchat.org. Both Ellen and I are big fans of Celiac Canada and we felt at the end of Celiac Awareness Month, it was time to suggest that listeners connect with the local Chapter that is closest to them. Ep 303 Celiac Chat with Avery

Ep 303 Celiac Chat with Avery

I often get emails from people I know within the celiac community regarding interesting people or medical professionals, who might make good guests for a podcast episode. It was during a conversation with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com when Avery’s name came up. Ellen brought her to our attention recently. When I contacted Avery to record a conversation, we had to wait until she’d finished her final exams – that was a new one for me – and I was excited to hear her story and get the perspective of a high school student on dealing with celiac disease. Avery had the idea of doing something to benefit the kids in our celiac community, but it took her years to formulate what that would look like. She has recently launched Celiac Chat which is an online mentoring platform to allow kids to speak to other kids, or adults who relate to their issues. After taking some time off to recuperate from knee surgery, I’m back speaking with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com for the beginning of May to review some of the articles she brought to our attention over the past month. If you’re interested in the Irish Tour, best make your inquiry quickly, as spots are limited – check out the link below. Ellen and I spoke about an article written by a reporter in upstate New York regarding his experience eating gluten free in local restaurants. I found he was able to thread together a story that many of us can relate to – but he was able to articulate it so much better than I can. Ellen shared with us the story of a home-based bakery on Vancouver Island with a difference. She also shares some great photos of his creations. Staying on the food theme, Ellen has provided us a link to a free recipe booklet from Corn Thins – I didn’t realize they were so versatile! Ep 301 April 2024 Roundup

Ep 301 April 2024 Roundup

It’s the beginning of April, which for me means that I get to chat with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about interesting articles and studies she has brought to our attention over the past month. I had to record with Ellen prior to end of the March as I was preparing for knee surgery. Ellen kept posting and you can keep up with her work by subscribing to her monthly newsletter through her website. Ellen and I both had copies of the recent booklet produced by Celiac Canada with the preliminary results from their recent survey. There is so much information in these numbers and the analysts have only scratched the surface. You can read these initial results or download the booklet at celiac.ca. Both Ellen and I felt my recent conversation with Linda Sills regarding retirement and long-term care for her celiac mother was concerning and something we should all be concerned about for our families and ourselves. Ellen mentioned a previous a podcast I recorded with Mike Rose about choosing safe retirement living – you can listen at - https://acanadianceliacpodcast.libsyn.com/ep-168-retirement-living-gluten-free. As well Ellen wrote an article about Mike which you can read here - https://theceliacscene.com/celiac-crusader-tackles-challenges-residential-living/ Ellen told us about a new online mentoring program for kids and teens that is being started – you can find out more here - Introducing Celiac Chat - An Online Mentorship Program for Kid & Teens  and hopefully I will speak with Avery for a podcast in the near future. Villous atrophy is a term that many of us know from our diagnosis, but Ellen was able to show me an article that listed other conditions that may cause villous atrophy – and here I was thinking it was unique to Celiac Disease. Other Conditions that May Cause Villous Atrophy  On a social media note Ellen told us of a situation at a local restaurant in Victoria that recently decided to remove a popular gluten free item from their menu. This was of course unfortunate, but the negative comments on social media that ensued were somewhat over-the-top. Ellen and I comment on the issues. I mention that I recently attended a virtual class from Cinde, the everydayglutenfreegourmet.ca. I highly recommend these classes as we can all learn to make more gluten free options. Ep 300 More from the State of Celiac

Ep 300 More from the State of Celiac

This episode is a follow up to Episode 298 when I attended an event called The State of Celiac Disease in Canada during the last week of February. Celiac Canada held the event to present the preliminary results of the recent national survey. During the event, Melissa Secord the Executive Director of Celiac Canada spoke. I had more questions for Melissa, so I invited her on to this episode of the Podcast. Now that the preliminary results of the survey were being evaluated, I wanted to know more about what the results meant to Celiac Canada, and how they were going to use what they were learning to advance their efforts on our behalf. Also, at the event in February, a woman by the name of Linda Sills took to the podium to tell her family’s story of dealing with care homes for her elderly mother. Linda gave an emotional talk, and again, there was more I wanted to know. The prospect of choosing a long-term care home for a loved one or yourself, is daunting, but unfortunately, for many of us, it’s a fact of life. I was grateful that Linda trusted me with her moving story and allowed me to dig a bit deeper into how and why. This was a powerful conversation, and one you may want to refer for others to listen to. Thanks Linda, for sharing in such a personal way. Ep 299 A Child's Diagnosis

Ep 299 A Child's Diagnosis

I recently realized that although many of the people I speak with have been involved in the celiac and gluten free community for many years, I wasn’t well acquainted with the families of the newly diagnosed. When I operated my bakery, I was often the first celiac that people met after their diagnosis – it appears doctors were sending them my way. Since closing the bakery, I’ve built on my knowledge, but I must admit, I need a new perspective on what it’s like to raise a celiac child today. Ellen Bayens (theceliacscene.com) was kind enough to introduce me to Kelsea. She is a mom of a busy 10-year-old boy and can clearly remember what life was like before, during and after the diagnosis. Our conversation centres around the diagnosis and how the entire family was affected. I hope to have Kelsea on again to explore more aspects of being a parent to a celiac child.  Hopefully, I’ll speak with her son at some point as well. Ep 298 State of Celiac I

Ep 298 State of Celiac I

During the last week of February, Celiac Canada held an event called The State of Celiac Disease in Canada, during which the preliminary results of the recent national survey were presented. I was invited to bring my podcast equipment to the event and record conversations with some of those involved. This episode was recorded at the event, so you will notice some distortion and background noise in the audio – there was lots going on. I had the pleasure of speaking with James King. James has been a guest on the podcast previously, but this conversation was all about survey results. James is an analyst who is able to make sense of the numbers. Ep 297 March 2024 Roundup

It’s time to catch up with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com for the beginning of March 2024. I have the opportunity to review some of the articles Ellen has brought to our attention over the past month and ask questions as well as interject my own thoughts. We talk about a line of granola snacks and breakfast s foods that recently had their “gluten free” designation removed because the manufacturer is no longer using gluten free oat products. As consumers we must accept this as a business decision, but the concern of both Ellen and I was the lack of awareness with consumers of this big change in ingredients. Ellen brings to our attention a couple of food recalls by Health Canada of foods containing undeclared gluten. You can sign up to receive these alerts and specify which ingredients you are concerned about on the recalls and alert page - https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en Ellen includes an interesting article about a young professional hockey player and his journey with celiac disease. Of a more concerning nature is the article about a very specific form of cancer which is more common in celiacs and is on the rise. We discuss some of the statistics and if you should be concerned yourself. Ep 296 Kinnikinnick's Story Continues

On this episode I speak with Diane Bertrand from a company called English Bay. I wasn’t familiar with English Bay, and that’s because they produce foods for other companies. They do, however maintain a gluten free food manufacturing facility and when the owners of Kinnikinnick were looking for a good time to retire, after all the difficulties of running a specialized food business during the pandemic, English Bay seemed like the perfect fit. Diane fills us in on the plans for Kinnikinnick going forward, and it’s comforting to know that not only will things ramp up to get more product into stores, but the products themselves will stay the same including the “free from” identification. Diane and the team from Kinnikinnick have lots of work to do, but it’s something they have the resources and excitement for. Ep 295 How To Get More Fibre with Cinde

Ep 295 How To Get More Fibre with Cinde

On a recent podcast I spoke with Ellen Bayens about the importance of fibre in a gluten free diet. This topic keeps coming up whenever I speak to someone who is knowledgeable about nutrition. The fact is that most people in general, are not getting close to their recommended intake of fibre. When we talk about those on a gluten free diet, it’s very evident that fibre plays a major role in overall gut health and more effort should be made to increase the fibre in our daily diet. This is where my guest comes in – Cinde, The Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet has lots of suggestions and recipes that can enhance your everyday menus to include more fibre. Cinde has set herself and the listeners three challenges to get more fibre, as well she’s given us lots of recipes and suggestions to do just that. Ep 294 February 2024 Roundup

Its the beginning of February which means I get the chance to speak with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to discuss some of the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month. This month is focussing on gut health and those confusing supplements we are seeing everywhere that suggest some of our digestive issues can be solved with a pill that will improve our gut microbiome and in turn our gut health. Ellen breaks down all of the hype and wording around the supplements as well as the studies that are often quoted by supplement providers. We also talk about the changes that have been made to the upcoming (May 2025) Gluten Free River Cruise that now starts in Amsterdam. You can find out more by contacting Dianna directly at [email protected]. I mention to Ellen some of the things that have been pleasant surprises for me while staying in Phoenix, Arizona, and we also talk about a new resource on Ellen’s re-vamped website. Ep 293 Gluten Free Cruise Update

On podcast episode 284 I invited you to find out more about a European River Cruise that was being organized by Expedia Cruises, or more specifically, Dianna McIntosh from Ottawa. There was a very tight timeline to book, which made bringing everything together very difficult. Since that time, Dianna and Expedia Cruises have pivoted to a different provider, a slightly smaller ship, but with even more spaces suitable for the group. The new dates of the cruise are now May 3rd to May 10th, 2025. There are exciting other changes as well. You can find out more by contacting Dianna directly at [email protected]. Ep 290 Mental Health and Celiac Disease with Justine Dowd

I had a very interesting conversation with Justine Dowd, PhD, a Health Coach who is also celiac. She works with individuals who are struggling with gut health issues. These issues can make someone feel less like themselves and put one in a spiral of depression and anxiety. We are all familiar with the struggles of feeling safe on a gluten free diet, and depending on what else is going on in your world, and what support systems you have, these struggles can have a negative effect on your day-to-day life. Justine Dowd is a Health Coach who keeps up to date on the latest science and studies surrounding the link between mental health and gut health and understands these very specific issues. Ep 289 Gluten Free Kitchen Tips with Robyn

Ep 289 Gluten Free Kitchen Tips with Robyn

Preparing food gluten free is not easy. For those newly diagnosed, or someone cooking or baking for them, it’s a steep learning curve. I am often asked for advice on how to set up a gluten free kitchen to make food preparation and baking easier. On this episode I speak with Robyn of Robyn’s Gluten Free Baking Courses for advice and practical tips to set up your gluten free kitchen to make baking fun and hassle free. Both Robyn and I have been baking gluten free for years, and we’ve come up with some handy tips to take some of the stress out of so many flours and the different equipment you might need. Here’s Robyn’s list of flours other information she sent me – What I keep in large jars (used most often): ·  Brown rice flour ·  White rice flour ·  Sorghum flour ·  Gluten-free Oat flour ·  Tapioca starch ·  Potato starch ·  Corn starch (though I just keep it in the large container from Costco!) ·  Almond flour: I also always have almond flour on hand, but I also buy the large bag from Costco and keep it in the fridge. Other flours I like to have. I usually keep them in smaller jars or buy them as I need them: ·  Teff flour ·  Millet flour ·  Buckwheat flour ·  Sweet rice flour (I mainly use it during the holidays) I also keep a small to medium-sized jar of xanthan gum in my baking drawer.   For those who might be overwhelmed with the number of ingredients listed here, my 6 must-have list for basic gluten-free baking are brown rice flour, white rice flour, almond flour, potato starch, tapioca starch, and cornstarch (as well as xanthan gum). These are all of the GF baking ingredients I use to make everything in my Essentials Course.  These are the jars I use for my everyday baking (what I consider to be "large jars"). If I buy even larger quantities of flour than what fits in the jars, I will keep them stored away and refill when necessary. Here’s the link to order her very trendy aprons – https://shop.glutenfreebakingcourses.com/ This is what my bread pans are like. They are normally used for a steam table in a restaurant, but they work amazingly well for bread in the oven. They are ¼, which means they are ¼ of a full steam table pan. They come in different depths, but I find the 4” one is best for gluten free bread. We’ve all heard the “you can have just a little bit, what harm could it do” or “don’t worry when you travel to Europe, wheat is different there and it won’t cause you any symptoms”. Some myths we’d like to believe, or at least not question, but it’s important to stop mis-information in it’s tracks and find out what science tells us. Ep 285 November 2023 Roundup

It’s the beginning of November and that means I get to chat with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about articles and studies she has brought to our attention over the past month. Ellen and I talk about a recent study that shows an increase in women’s reproductive issues in the celiac population compared to the general female population. We also look at a presentation from the University of Chicago about DH and I, for one learned, some new facts about DH and how it relates to celiac disease. We chat about the inconvenience of asking questions in a restaurant and if this explains why some people takes risks and chances. Ellen also brought us a very interesting webinar from Europe regarding questions to do with the new forms of biodegradable tableware that we are seeing in takeout containers and from food trucks. Ep 284 Come Cruising Totally Gluten Free

If you’ve listened to the podcast for a while, you’ll know that I enjoy cruising and I’ve had great success eating a wide variety of gluten free foods onboard. My cruises have been on the large ocean liners. This week I’m speaking to Dianna from Expedia Cruises. Dianna herself is celiac and she’s organizing this cruise for April 2025. Expedia has contracted with AMA Waterways to ensure that there will be no gluten anywhere onboard. Sounds like a bit of dream! Then we look at the cruise itself, on the Danube, beautiful. The cruise is priced to include excursions, wi-fi, drinks, pretty much everything you might want. There is urgency here as Dianna must sell the staterooms by the end of November. Expedia Cruises & AMA Waterways is a sponsor of Celiac Canada to benefit their educational and advocacy programs. Both Dianna and I will be joining the cruise! Open the link to find out more. Ep 283 Celiac Myths Pt 1

Ep 283 Celiac Myths Pt 1

Like you, I often look up resources online for information on celiac disease. Sometimes, I start to go down a rabbit hole that includes social media posts including videos (which can be more convincing than just words). After being involved with Celiac Canada for more than 25 years and relying on information from them, I’m in a pretty good position to decide whether information is correct and legitimate, or if it’s maybe wishful thinking, or just wrong. I thought it was a good time to bring many of these myths to the podcast. I enlisted Registered Dietician Cayleigh McAulay from Celiac Canada to help me go over myths that have attracted our attention. Cayleigh is often the person who answers queries or Celiac Canada, so I’m confident she’s heard it all. The myths Cayleigh and I discuss for this episode are regarding Celiac Disease – 1.       Celiac disease is an allergy. 2.       Celiac disease is rare. 3.       Celiac disease is a childhood disease. 4.       Celiac disease can be outgrown / is curable. 5.       Celiac disease is easy to recognize. 6.       If you have the celiac genes, you must have celiac disease. 7.       Celiac disease only causes digestive issues.   Cayleigh and I will be following up in the next few weeks with Myths Part 2, covering mis-information around gluten and the gluten free diet. Ep 281 Robyn Bakes Gluten Free

Ep 281 Robyn Bakes Gluten Free

I always find it interesting when I meet someone in person who I’ve (in my own mind) “met” online. For a long time now, I’ve found the Instagram feed from Robyn’s Gluten Free Baking Courses fun and full of amazing photos of her baking. I’ve been fortunate to meet Robyn at several events over the past few years. She always shows up in her 50’s housewife blue polka dot dress – easy to spot in a crowd. I suppose with my recording gear, I’m easy to spot too. I’ve recorded short chats with Robyn at these events, but have been waiting for the right time to sit down with her to find out her story, why she concentrates on gluten free baking, and how she decided to sell her baking courses. One baker to another, we could have talked on and on. If you’ve been hesitant to try your hand at gluten free baking, now might be the best time. The coupon code Robyn gave us was ccpodcast which will get you 10% off any course (just apply the code at checkout). Thanks Robyn! Ep 280 October 2023 Roundup

Ep 280 October 2023 Roundup

It’s the beginning of October and my opportunity to speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to chat about the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month. Ellen published an article about the delay in reading celiac diagnostic blood tests for children in Montreal. This was truly concerning. The family highlighted had introduced gluten back into their daughter’s diet as a gluten challenge prior to testing. When the tests were not processed and had to be disposed of to be re-done, the family was understandably angry. This situation, which is now being dealt with effected almost 3,000 blood tests for children. This gave Ellen and I lots to talk about. On a different note, there is a shift evolving to have celiac disease in adults diagnosed from blood tests which show a multiple times above normal reading. This was begun a couple of years ago for children after a study showed it could reduce the number of children having to undergo a biopsy, but recently, it’s being shown that blood tests for adults with “extreme” results, can be used in a similar way. Hopefully this will lead to more simple protocols for diagnosis in the future.   Ellen brings us a question to, and answer from, an advice columnist when asked about a friend who seems obsessively talking about her gluten issues. Are we being boring? How should we deal with friends and family who find our conversations limited and very narrow? As well, what strategies should we use when a friend or family member seems to only talk about their health issues? Lots of food for thought here. Ep 278 Celiac Caucus

Ep 278 Celiac Caucus

On this episode I speak with Melissa Secord, Executive Director of Celiac Canada. She fills me in on an amazing breakfast Celiac Canada hosted on Parliament Hill. Melissa chats with me and refers me to Roberta Kramchynsky, a volunteer with the CCA who has had experience advocating with members of Parliament. Both Roberta and Melissa explain to me that now a Celiac Caucus has been formed with members of Parliament from different parties. The Caucus will help Celiac Canada have its interests taken into account in upcoming legislation, as well as help put forward ideas that may help the celiac population. Tax reform and fortification of gluten free foods are just a couple of concerns that Celiac Canada is looking forward to bringing to the Caucus for consideration. On this episode Ellen and I speak about a few recent studies looking at the prevalence of autoimmune conditions, persistent villous atrophy, and how gluten actually triggers injury in the intestines. As well Ellen and I talk about an article aimed at physicians to help them support their celiac patients. We also discuss Meal Kits and how they might fit into your gluten free diet. Ep 275 August 2023 Roundup

It’s the beginning of August and my opportunity to speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to chat about the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month. I was happy to let Ellen step up on her soapbox to talk about how unsafe gluten free food is when it’s prepared within a gluten bakery. This seems to be happening more often lately, even though we recognize that the food certainly doesn’t meet our normal standards for gluten free. Consumers are driving this trend, so it would seem it’s something we can change. We also spoke about the value of Registered Dieticians who specialize in celiac disease. The name Selena DeVries came up as someone who understands our struggles first-hand and is there to help. Ellen mentioned a few of my recent podcasts including 5 Tips for Cruising Gluten Free, my conversation with Miski Brewing about their quinoa-based beer, and on my other podcast, my co-host Aaron’s struggles with EOE – a condition that is more common in the celiac community. Ep 274 Five Lessons for Cruising Gluten Free

This podcast episode is a solo effort. I had mentioned to Ellen Bayens earlier in the spring that I wanted to take some time to gather my thoughts on what stategies I employed while on a recent cruise that helped make my meals wonderful and safe. I’ve broken my thoughts down to five lessons and add a couple of stories on situations that happened. I ate very well on my transatlantic cruise on the Celebrity Edge in April. It takes a bit of effort and many conversations, but I was very looked after. Ep 273 July 2023 Roundup

It’s the beginning of July, so for me that means another opportunity to speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to discuss articles and topics of interest Ellen has presented to us over the past month. It’s been a busy couple of months for both Ellen and I. She welcomed a new granddaughter and my daughter got married – we’re both still on a bit of a high! Ellen and I spoke about the return of Only Oats to Canadian stores. The return will be gradual, but lots of work is being done to have the safe oats available across Canada. Ellen also told us about two brands of artificial crab that were improperly labelled omitting wheat and egg, so they appeared to be gluten free, but were not. We spoke about how gluten free consumers might approach this situation. Ellen has had a long relationship with the restaurant chain Noodlebox, but recently it has become apparent that they are no longer able to ensure meals can be made gluten free. We discuss how this happened, and how you might may still want to work with your local Noodlebox location. NEWS FROM THE CELIAC SCENE • Podcast Time! Ep 271 Only Oats is Back

Ep 271 Only Oats is Back

On this episode I speak with the new owners of Only Oats who are committed to getting the products back on store shelves across Canada. Many of us were concerned when our trusted oat brand was no longer available in our area and unfortunately, we had to wait to get the answered we needed. Only Oats is now back in the marketplace and today we hear about what happened, and how the new owners of the brand are working to come back and be there for consumers. I also speak with a registered dietitian who works with Only Oats about oats and how they fit into a gluten free diet, along with tips for adding this very nutritious food into our gluten free recipes. Here's the recipe Cara gave me – Oatmeal Flax Banana Bread Recipe developed by: Cara Stoller, B. HEc. R.D. Our household goes through a few of these loaves each week! Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray and line a standard loaf pan with parchment paper to be able to lift out easily. 3 ripe bananas 1⁄2 cup egg whites 1⁄2 cup plain Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 3⁄4 cup ground rolled oats 3⁄4 cup ground flax meal 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder Chocolate chips or walnuts if desired. Combine wet ingredients in food processor. Add in dry ingredients and combine. Add chocolate chips or walnuts if using and mix by hand. Pour into prepared loaf pan and bake for approximately 1 hour at 325 F. Check with toothpick after 50 minutes. Allow to sit in pan approximately 5 minutes once removed from oven. Lift out onto cooling rack and gently roll out of parchment paper. Allow to cool prior to cutting. Ep 270 June 2023 Roundup

Ep 270 June 2023 Roundup

It’s the beginning of June, so for me that means another opportunity to speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to discuss articles, studies and topics of interest Ellen has presented to us over the past month. This month Ellen gave us a study that looks at the pattern of healthcare visits of someone not yet diagnosed with celiac disease. This is considered to be the “diagnostic window” and past studies have been able to help with speedier diagnosis once a broad pattern has been established. This is already being done for some cancers and is currently being studied as an approach to celiac disease, parkinsons and other digestive conditions. If physicians were able to identify the need for celiac testing earlier, we could all benefit. This promoted a discussion of the uses for artificial intelligence as a tool for doctors. Ellen published an article titled “My Mother’s Long & Winding Road to Diagnosis”. This is a complicated story with many twists and turns, and it wasn’t until I reached the end of the article that I realized this was actually written by Ellen about her Mother. She showed such courage and grace during very difficult times. Ellen and I give a quick synopsis, but I encourage you to read the entire article. We then discussed how important it is to be positive about your diagnosis, which can be difficult at first, but should be a goal. On this episode I speak with Justine Dowd PhD who, along with having celiac disease herself, is a Health and Wellness Specialist and Wellness Coach. Justine and I tackle the emotional topic of infertility as it relates to celiac disease. This topic includes issues around fertility for those diagnosed, along with the uncertainty for those yet to be diagnosed. Both Justine and I have suffered miscarriages, which are not uncommon, but are emotionally difficult for an entire family. Justine tells us about the gut-brain connection and goes through some of her strategies to assist couples preparing for an upcoming pregnancy. Ep 268 May 2023 Roundup

Happy May, Celiac Awareness Month! At the beginning of each month, I speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to discuss articles, studies and topics of interest Ellen has presented to us over the past month. Of great concern to consumers in general, and gluten free consumers in particular, is the rising cost of food. In an effort to bring our unique perspective on these issues in front of lawmakers, Celiac Canada held a breakfast event on Parliament Hill recently. There are many aspects to the CCA message including the emphasis on the gluten free diet costing up to five times as much as gluten food, the unworkable tax relief that is not an effective solution as well as the lack of nutritional fortification in our gluten free processed foods. Dr. Peter Green debunks six common myths of celiac disease. I found this particularly fascinating, as science will always win out these emotionally charged discussions. Ellen also brought us an article on new guidelines for physicians to diagnose and treat their celiac patients. Selena DeVries RD shares valuable information about over-the-counter allergy medications as well as her advice on digestive enzymes. Ellen has done it again – she’s found new foods in her area. She not only found a cafeteria-style build your own pizza place, but also gluten free waffle cones. Here are links to the articles we spoke about – NEWS FROM THE CELIAC SCENE • The Struggle is Real.
