Welcome to 'Your Pet Business Content Your Way,' a podcast to empower pet business owners to set aside the 'should dos' 'must dos' and 'got tos' and do things their way.
My focus is about helping you do what feels right and enjoyable to you, rather than getting swept away in the latest trends.
This podcast is a perfect match if you've felt bent out of shape trying to accommodate someone else's idea of content creation.
Cast aside the notions of following a generic blueprint or making yourself miserable doing things that you hate!
As an experienced journalist, consultant, author, coach, and pet business owner, I've combined my knowledge to identify and share strategies that feel good, fun and that you might even enjoy!
This podcast is to inspire you to create pet business content in a way that resonates with you.
I promise not to give you quick fixes or spoon-feed you strategies. Instead, I encourage learning and developing your distinct voice in content creation.
The podcast operates in seasons, with a new episode released every Monday during the active season.
As well as the tools, strategies and mindset shifts that will help you get noticed, I’ll showcase successful pet professionals who've put their big pants on and marketed their work their own way.
It's all about carving out your own path, not following the crowd.
The aim is not to create buzz just for the sake of getting noticed, but to genuinely help people and make a difference in your unique way.
By tuning in, my hope is that you'll discover a renewed excitement about marketing your pet business authentically.
Connect with me on social media @rachelspenceruk, join my friendly and supportive Facebook community, and let's create content in a way that feels right for you.

Justine Williams of Our Family Dog on why she created Mumsnet for puppy owners
When Justine Williams left the RSPCA she decided she wanted to have a greater understanding of why people give up their pets.Having worked in the communications and campaigns department, she'd tried to make sense of the huge problem of dogs being abandoned. Before she had her children, she remembered turning to Mumsnet for help on what to expert and how to adjust her lifestyle. And as a new mum, she spent many a time in the small hours getting advice on forums.Justine realised there wasn't anything similar for puppy owners, or new dog owners. So she studied human behaviour change and decided to create Our Family Dog, a website and community supporting new pet parents.Launched just before lockdown at the end of 2019, the site has grown hugely and in this episode Justine shares her story.Key timings and topics in this episode: 0.45 - Justine’s background and Our Family Dog.1.30 - Justine’s work at the RSPCA in animal welfare.3.00 - Studying the relationship between impulse purchases and dogs being handed in to rescue centres.3.30 - Realising the similarity between parenting and having a pup.5.30 - Studying human behaviour change at the University of Derby.8.27 - How people responded to Mumsnet for dogs!11.06 - How people feel when they are struggling with their pets and why Justine thought it was key to focus on the owner as well as the dog.12.14 - How Our Family Dog works.16.18 - Why community is so important to pet parents.17.56 - The impact of lockdown on Our Family Dog and why support is needed more than ever.19.38 - The issues Justine is seeing and how she’s trying to provide the tools to support dogs post lockdown and why it’s important to step into their shoes.22.02 - Justine’s concerns about dogs and where they might end up post lockdown.24.58 - Our Family Dog’s mission to support owners as they return to normal.26.02 - Justine’s advice for owners who need support, to find a trainer who is a member of the Association for Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) accredited behaviourist and pet professionals who are in the Pet Industry Federation. How a membership community can raise the profile of your pet business
Working on your own is tough and running a business can feel lonely. So being part of a community such as a group coaching programme or membership can help as you have other people to support you. They understand what it’s like to be your own boss (like never switching off) and if they’re in the same industry, they get what you do too.And this can be really important when it comes to promoting ourselves and our businesses. Putting ourselves out there can be daunting, but when you have other people around you who understand those feelings of awkwardness and who are there to support you, it can make it a lot less painful. For the last year, I’ve been running a membership programme for pet business owners helping them ‘put themselves out there’ and get publicity. At first, it was all about traditional media, but it’s grown to cover all kinds of topics around raising the profile of your business.I'm opening it again for new members to join this week and if you'd like to learn more you can do so on this link. This episode is about how community of like minded people can help you become more visible.Key timings and topics in this episode:1.30 - How business memberships have helped me in my business and what it was like being on my own beforehand.3.19 - How the publicity for pet businesses membership came about.4.22 - What the ethos is inside the membership and how it helps when it comes to putting yourself out there.5.30 - The three elements of the membership, the live classes, the membership portal and the Facebook community.7.55 - The publicity foundations sessions and how they help you set yourself up for PR success.8.54 - Why you need to have the foundations in place if you want to build authority as an expert.10.00 - The publicity spotlight programme and how that works by helping pet businesses get featured in newspapers, magazine, TV, radio and websites.12.02 - The publicity roadmap and how they fit together.12.46 - Monthly Q and A sessions and how they work.13.05 - Why I teach the sessions live - only 15 per cent of online courses get finished.14.05 - What the programme sets out to achieve - to take people from feeling unsure about whether they could get publicity to confidently approaching journalists and having pitches accepted.15.40 - How Karen Rhodes made her investment in the membership back ten fold - she featured in GQ.16.40 - How business is passed around in the membership (not like BNI) but where people buy each other's products, or use their services, for example Rikki Sullivan as a Canine Copywriter, photographers Kerry Jordan, Nigel Ord Smith and Rowan Williams, and Kate Taylor's dog friendly directory Dotty4Paws.18.24 - How a session inspired the Twitter chat hour Petworking Hour which has connected founders Kerry Jordan and Jeni Morris with people all over the world.18.52 - How the community has raised the profile of DoggyLottery for Lisette Van Riel and K9Nation for Becky Baker and members have invested in her app. 20.34 - Results from the founder member's survey.20.40 - Why people join - 62 per cent joined because they wanted to learn about media coverage, 47 per cent said they weren't visible enough, 43 per cent didn’t feel comfortable promoting their business and 38 per cent said they joined because they wanted to know more about content.21.09 - Has it raised your profile? 42 per cent of respondents said that being in the membership had raise their profile and that this had impacted on sales. 43 per cent said it had raised their profile. Only nine per cent responded with ‘maybe’ 21.42 - Most helpful element. Live calls were top at 67 per cent. 52 per cent said support and...

Seven Dos and Don'ts when dealing with journalists
Are you thinking of approacing the media and want to make sure you get it right?I had the idea to create this episode after a huge furore over an article about puppies in the Sunday Times on February 14th 2021.It was written by sports commentator Andrew Cotter and he shared his advice on how best to treat a puppy in their first year as a seasoned dog owner. (You can read it on the links at the bottom of this episode)It prompted a lot of criticism from trainers and behaviourists who felt a professional should have been appointed to write the piece. In his defence, Andrew had highlighted that he wasn’t qualified to give advice several times, saying,But I do accept that readers and owners would see him as an authority, take in his suggestions and go on to use them. However, lashing out at a writer on social media, attacking them, telling them publicly they are wrong, is not going to achieve anything.Key timings and topics in this episode:0.50 - How to reply to a journalist the best way if you don't agree with what they are saying1.10 - Background and the Andrew Cotter column5.10 - How you can learn from other experts who are in the media7.11 - DO be yourself, if you're being interviewed by a journalist show your personality 7.31 - DO have lots of anecdotes and stories to share 8.45 - DO have stats and facts to hand with examples such as statistics from charities 9.52 - DO be passionate about your topic - be excited! 10.39 - DO have high resolution photos that tell your story and story of Dominic Hodgson 12.02 - DO keep it simple, explain everything in a relatable way without jargon13.40 - DO make sure the journalist is interested in the topic that you're covering DON'TS when speaking to journalists14.50 - DON'T be salesy - thanks Jill Foster15.45 - DON'T be afraid of sharing your own personal stories and experiences and mention of Hannah Antrobus, dog trainer, Pawsitively Pawsome who shares personal stories to be relatable 17.09 - DON'T refuse to give basic details to journalists and why 20.08 - DON'T complain to a journalist unless it's warranted 22.31 - DON'T demand to the journalist and why not to do this, and how to ask for links using Vicky Gunn in OK as an example25.11 - DON’T sound like you're reading from a script but have things prepared to say 28.39 - DON'T be precious with your knowledge, be prepared to share your expertise so you’re seen as a helpful person 31.31 - Want to stay in touch?
