Ep 190: Utilizing the FREE Nutrients From the South End of a Northbound Cow

Winter feeding costs take a lot of profit away from your ranch and often we find ourselves working for the cow. So, what are some alternatives? Dr. Bart Lardner from the University of Saskatchewan discusses what they have found in their research on Bale Grazing, Swath Grazing and Crop Residual Grazing.  While these are not new concepts and you might be saying, "that can’t work in our operation". Well, here’s a quote a heard a long time ago, “Can’t never did anything”. As we discuss these alternative grazing practices, you’re going to hear some very practical and easy to employ methods about how you can Utilize the FREE Nutrients from the South End of a Northbound Cow! #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #TankToad #BarnOwl #Zoetis #Inherit #NewGenerationFeeds #SmartLIC #balegrazing #regenerative #soilhealth #economics #winterfeeding

Ep 189: Starting With A Clean Slate w/ Allan Crockett

Starting with a Clean Slate… I’m sure at some point that has crossed your mind.  Whether it’s with your ranch business or even your personal life.  Things feel cluttered, disorganized, over whelming, or stuck in a rut… and in many cases, not all, it starts with profitability.  So today Allan Crockett returns as our guest as he walks us through what we can do to “Reset”.  A conversation that will target nearly every one of us in Ranching.  For those so busy that life has lost its luster, to those stuck in a rut or feeling as though the business has plateaued, or the ones that have so many things going on that they are not doing anything well. Plus, will discuss Company Culture and the dangers of being resistant to change. It’s not a show just for the Decision Makers or Ranch Owners, this is also for the next gen ranchers as well.  What does it take to have a Clean Slate? #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #TankToad #BarnOwl #Zoetis #Inherit #NewGenerationFeeds #SmartLIC #mentalhealth #startover #nextgen #enterprise #companyculture

Ep 188: Johne’s Disease… the “Silent Thief of Productivity”!

It's called the "Silent Thief of Productivity"... we’re talking about Johne’s Disease.  A disease that is highly contagious and fatal, because there is no cure for it.  For most of us we assume it’s a disease that you see in the dairy industry, but now, we are starting to see it showing up in the beef herd. Dr. Susanne Hickley (Neogen) is back as my guest as we discuss what causes it Johne's Disease, the four stages, what kind of testing is available, what can we do to manage against it, and why it is considered to be the “Silent Thief of Productivity”.  But a huge concern is that the first two stage of Johne’s is not visible, but they are contagious. So, once an animal reaches visible stages, how many more cattle in your herd are infected? If you’re in the cattle business, buying, selling, or leasing bulls or bred cattle… might want to listen in to today’s episode.  #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #TankToad #BarnOwl #Zoetis #Inherit #NewGenerationFeeds #SmartLIC #SilentThief #Disease

Ep 187: Added Protein To Your Cow’s Diet… Is It Worth It?

Dr. Kelley Neuhold returns as our guest as we discuss why you would consider adding crude protein to your cow’s diet… from maintaining a healthy body condition score to calving, to getting the most out of your low-cost feed sources. We'll also discuss one of the most commonly used protein sources, Urea.  Why it’s used and some of the misconceptions about Urea.  Plus, we'll also discuss other high protein options that can be used in your feed options.  And what is the cheapest thing we can get us the furthest in your nutritional plan? Ep 186: The Benefits of Zinc Supplementation Prior To or After Transportation

Adding ZINC can reduce the impacts of muscle disease in cattle.  Muscle Fatigue, which can be a precursor to animals not getting up and eating, thus leading to added stress, which leads to sickness.  Dr. Stephanie Hansen, with Iowa State University (link to press release) has been leading the latest research on benefits of added zinc into the diet of the cattle. Today will review the results of two studies they have done that focuses on added zinc supplementation both after transportation and prior to transportation.  We’ll discuss the optimal level, how you can add it, and the cost.  Zinc… number 30 on the periodical table, but maybe it should be number 1 on your list to utilize this fall. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #HallandHall #TankToad #BarnOwl #Zoetis #Inherit #purina #640 #shippingfever #transportation #zinc

Ep 184: Grazing Behavior of Efficient vs Non-Efficient Cattle on Rangeland

So, what are the behaviors that we see in Efficient Cattle and the behaviors in the Non-Efficient Cattle?  Basically, finding that cow that can do everything she’s supposed to do, but do it with less in her environment.  Dr. Jim Sprinkle, Extension Beef Specialist with the University of Idaho is my guest as we talk about their latest research that looks at the grazing behavior of cow/calf pairs on rugged rangeland pastures.  What can we glean from that data? Ep 179: Overreach or Rogue Agent? The Maude Family Story

Ep 179: Overreach or Rogue Agent? The Maude Family Story

Today it’s the story of Charles and Heather Maude, a young ranch family in Southwest South Dakota that have found themselves indicted for theft of federal property over 25 acres of National Grass Lands that had been a part of this 5th generation ranch family since 1910.  Rachel Gabel, spokesperson for the Maude family, is my guest as we unpack this story.  In 55 days from a normal and civil meeting on May 1st with a Forest Service District Ranger and a US Forest Service special agent over decades old boundary discrepancies, the Maudes, out of the blue, found themselves summoned to appear in US District Court.  They were separately indicted with a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and fined up to $250,000 each.  So, what happened here?  What are the details behind this story?  Why has there been little to no information made available by the Forest Service as to why they escalated this issue quickly without trying to find resolution? Why is it alarming to all of us in production agriculture?  Is this reflective of the US Forest Service or a rogue district office and agent in South Dakota?   Financial Contributions: Maude Family Go Fund Me Page Maude Legal Fund c/o First Interstate Bank, P.O. Ep 178: Managing For Resilience!

What are you doing on your ranch to make it more resilient to drought or extreme winter weather conditions? Dr. Paul Beck (OK State) is my guest is that questions leads our conversation. Dr. Beck will outline three areas that we can manage with our ranches to build that “resilience” in our ranching operation.  Yes, the conversation will range from cow size to stocking rates to improved grazing and stockpiling.  Would it be any coincidence that this conversation will lead to talking about profitability with your cow herd??  It's nothing fancy today, just a good conversation about how you and I can make a difference not only on our own ranchers but our industry as a whole. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #HallandHall #TankToad #drought #cowsize #stockingrates #improvedgrazing

Ep 177: Things to Consider on Using TMR Mixers from... Rookie to Expert

TMR Mixing wagons... not just for the dairies and large feeding operations and today Dr. Kelley Neuhold (Westway Feed Products) and what he is referring to are TMR Mixers.  Now TMR Mixers are not necessarily new in our industry but as more ranchers are picking them up used or new, what are some things we need to know about them.  For example, what’s the difference between a horizontal and a vertical mixer, mixing order of your feed sources and why, as well as feed strategies when using them.   You might be an outfit that uses one, one that is considering it, or an outfit that doesn’t want any more machinery… I encourage you to listen in because our conversation is for each of you. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #HallandHall #TankToad #TMR #feedingcows #backgrounding

Ep 171: Fetal Programming – The Framework Powering Your Genetic Potential

Ron Scott (Purina) is my guest as we jump into a deep discussion on Fetal Programming.  We’ll explore a study done out of NDSU on heifer calves all the way from birth to a calving cow and the correlation between the nutrition, minerals, vitamins, their mommas received and their performance as 1st time mommas and their ability to re-breed. Fetal Programming is a subject that dove tails nicely into last week’s episode and it's a factor we really need to understand in our effort as ranchers to raising cattle that are profitable for our operation… which means cattle that are maximizing their genetic potential and staying in the herd longer. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #InheriteSelect #K-line #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #purina #windandrain #rebreed #secondcalf #fetalprogramming #cowlongevity #nutrition #minerals

Ep 170: Chasing That "Elusive" Second Calf

The cost of not getting the second calf from a heifer you either bought our developed is a big hit.  Karla Wilke, (University of Nebraska) joins us today as we go through several discuss points regarding getting that "elusive" second calf. While some would say “don’t baby the girl”, there could be some flaws in that theory.  And what about the genetics we are breeding into our herd and how it should relate to our physical environment. It's a balance between too much and not enough in managing the first calf heifers after calving, because too far in either direction is a loss in profitability. Ep 169: Adaptive Grazing w Allen Williams… Cheaper Than Buying More Land

"Everything that happens out here creates compounding cascading effects, and those effects are never neutral. They're either positive or negative"... a quote from our guest Allen William (Understanding Ag and Soil Health Academy).  On this show he explains Adaptive Grazing and how it can generate positive effects on your ranch. Allen will explain what it IS, what it is NOT, and the 3 rules adaptive grazing.  The best part about it is... it's simple and practical.  At the end of the day, it’s about creating a healthier soil that can generate more net production, more profit, and be more resilient in drought.  Here’s another angle... Ep 166: Bird Flu… What If!!

It's more about the "unknown" than the "known" when it comes to Avian Influenza (Bird Flu). Dr. Fred Gingrich, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, is my guest today as we discussed the Influenza Type A H5N1 outbreak now being confirmed in Dairy Cattle.  As a beef cattle rancher I have A LOT of questions like... Are beef cows susceptible? What are the symptoms? How is it transferred? Is it fatal?  Then, what it will do to consumer confidence in any products that come from cows... oh and then what about traceability? And then… what IF it shows up in a Beef Cow?  Dr. Gingrich rates this issue at a level 8.5 to 9 on a scale of 10. For the sake of your ranch and for our cattle industry, tune in for today’s show. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #InheriteSelect #Kline #BirdFlu #H5N1 #Traceability #purina #equine #horsenutrition

Then we’ll hear about a product aimed to mitigate stress in livestock called FerAppease. Founder and developer Dr. Rodorigo Bacalho explains what it is, how it works, it purpose in a cattle operation, and of course dosage and cost. It’s not a show endorsing the products, but if I have questions about them... And as we know Country of Origin Labeling has been a controversial issue in our industry for many years.  So, what clicked… what was it in these latest changes that brought agreement amongst industry groups that have been at odds in the past on this issue?  We’ll discuss that as well as his thoughts on the WTO, the results of the Consumer Survey on beef products, and why he believes this voluntary approach to Country-of-Origin Labeling could build cooperation in the industry. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #Gelbvieh #DiamondV #InheriteSelect #USCA #NCBA #BeefCheckOff #RCalf #TruthInLabeling

Ep 154: Shifting Policy Against Agriculture... from public lands to climate initiatives

How does a case in Idaho over stock water rights on public lands have a much broader implication? That’s basically the crux of our conversation today as Gage Zobell with the law firm of Dorsey & Whitney walks us through the multiple angles of this topic starting first with water and land use of our public lands.  We’ll discuss how policy rather than legislation is now the norm when it comes to the rules and regulations we see in the country side.  And we’ll discuss how climate initiatives are shaping policy with no realization to the consequences they’ll make on the production of the food and fiber in our country. #workingranchmagazine #workingranchnation #justinmills.wyocowboy #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #Gelbvieh #DiamondV #publiclands #BLM #ForestService #climate #waterrights
