Creepy Fairy Tale Origin Stories of The Little Mermaid, Little Red Riding Hood & Hansel and Gretel
What a CreepSeason 27, Episode 5Creepy Fairy Tale Origin Stories!Forget everything you learned from animated films… several beloved fairy tales are far from the joyous Disney creatures we have all seen since childhood. This episode discusses the dark worlds behind Little Red Riding Hood, The Little Mermaid, and Hansel and Gretel. The sanitized versions of these fairy tales we share today keep only hints of these origins, but the eerie stories lurking beneath the surface remind us that fairy tales weren’t always about happy endings.Sources for this episode:Snow White WritesHow Stuff WorksBritish Youth Music TheaterAll That’s InterestingEast Rockaway GullWikipedia The Little MermaidWikipedia Little Red Riding HoodFairy Tales with JenThe ResurrectionistsThe Little Mermaid Abit Frank YouTubeCinderella Abit Frank YouTube Trigger warning: Fictional Murder, Child Abduction, Werewolves, and CannibalismBe sure to follow us on social media. Harry Powers & the Inspiration for "The Night of the Hunter"
What a CreepHarry Powers: The Inspiration for “The Night of the Hunter”Season 27, Episode 3Harry Powers, often called the "Lonely Hearts Killer," was a notorious American serial killer active in the early 1930s. Born Herman Drenth in the Netherlands in 1892, he emigrated to the United States and eventually settled in West Virginia. Powers used personal ads in newspapers to target his victims, posing as a lonely, wealthy bachelor seeking companionship. He lured women, often widows or divorcées, with promises of marriage and financial security. In 1931, Powers was arrested and charged with the murders of Asta Eicher, a widow from Illinois, her three children, and another woman named Dorothy Lemke from Massachusetts. His murders were shockingly brutal; he confined his victims in a hidden room in his garage before killing them. After murdering his victims, Powers took their money and belongings. Powers' trial received extensive media coverage due to the horrific details and his manipulative use of "lonely hearts" ads. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to death, being hanged on March 18, 1932, in Moundsville, West Virginia. His crimes have inspired books and films, solidifying his infamy as a symbol of betrayal in love and trust. Harry Powers was also a significant inspiration for the novel and subsequent film The Night of the Hunter. The novel was written by Davis Grubb in 1953 and adapted into a film in 1955. Sun City and Artists United Against Apartheid
What a CreepSeason 26, Episode 5 Sun City and Apartheid in South Africa Sun City is a luxury resort and casino complex in South Africa. During the apartheid era (1948-1990s), it became infamous for hosting international artists despite the global cultural boycott of South Africa. The South African government promoted Sun City as a major entertainment destination, but for many, it symbolized the oppression and exploitation of apartheid. Artists United Against Apartheid was a collective of musicians who came together in 1985 to raise awareness and protest apartheid, mainly targeting the Sun City resort. Steven Van Zandt, a musician and member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and record producer Arthur Baker spearheaded the group. George Washington and the Tale of Ona Judge (REPLAY)
What a Creep (Replay!) Season 20, Episode 7George Washington and the Tale of Ona JudgeGeorge Washington is the “Father of Our Country” and one of American history's most revered Founding Fathers. We heard tales of how brave he was and that he could not tell a lie. He also famously refused to create a fiefdom with the office of President, which means we are not stuck with someone in office unless they are duly elected. Like many white people of his time, he enslaved people. This is a fact, and though not unusual in his peer group--it's not a great look for a person who is enshrined all across the United States. People want to downplay his racism and evil acts. Listening to Bill Maher and Elon Musk minimize his actions made us realize we need to dive into one of the first President’s most heinous acts by talking about badass Ona Judge. An enslaved woman who escaped from the President’s home and remained free despite his relentless pursuit of her. This woman is an American hero whom everyone who truly believes in liberty and freedom needs to learn about and memorialize her contribution to history. The Killing of Dominique Dunne by John Thomas Sweeney & NON-Creep Theresa Saldana "Victims for Victims"
What a CreepSeason 25, Episode 7The Murder of Dominique Dunne by John Thomas SweeneyDominique Dunne, known for her role in the 1982 film "Poltergeist," had a bright future. Tragically, her life was cut short on October 30, 1982, when her ex-boyfriend strangled her, John Thomas Sweeney, outside her West Hollywood home. She never regained consciousness and died on November 4, 1982, at just 22 years old.The trial that followed sparked outrage. Sweeney was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, not murder, and served only three years of a six-and-a-half-year sentence. This lenient sentence highlighted severe flaws in the justice system's handling of domestic violence cases. Dominique's death brought attention to domestic abuse, prompting her family, especially her father, Dominick Dunne, to advocate for victims' rights and legal reforms. Diane Downs & Ann Rule's "Small Sacrifices"
What a CreepSeason 24, Episode 7Diane DownsDiane Downs gained infamy for the 1983 shooting of her three children, one of whom died, in Springfield, Oregon. The case became highly publicized due to the shocking nature of the crime and the subsequent investigation and trial. On May 19, 1983, Diane Downs drove her children to a rural road and shot them at close range. She then drove VERY SLOWLY to a hospital, claiming that a “bushy-haired stranger” had shot her and her children during a carjacking attempt. However, inconsistencies in her story and evidence led investigators to suspect her involvement in the crime. Anne Rule’s book Small Sacrifices was turned into a TV movie starring Farah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal that garnered huge ratings. Royal Family Public Relations Fiascos with Kristen Meinzer of the Daily Fail podcast
What a CreepRoyal Family PR FiascosSeason 24, Episode 5With the latest news of an insanely unusual news cycle that, unfortunately, includes Kate Middleton being diagnosed with cancer, we decided to speak to supreme royal expert and friend of the pod Kristen Meinzer of the Daily Fail podcast to talk about what the heck is going on with the House of Windsor. "Coyote V. Acme" Warner Bros Discovery's David Zaslav Strikes Aagain!
What a Creep“Coyote V. Acme Controversy”Season 24, Episode 4In February 1980, The New Yorker magazine published a satire called "Coyote V. Acme" written by Ian Frazier. The story was about Wile E. Coyote suing Acme, the company that supplied him with the equipment he used to try and catch the Road Runner, for all his injuries over the years. In 1987, the success of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" led to the combination of animation and live actors in this story. However, it wasn't until the 2020s that Warner Brothers hired writer Samy Burch and director Dave Green to bring the project to life. The film was completed in 2022, but now the parent company refuses to release it and instead writes it off for tax purposes. Despite considering other outlets, the $75 million price tag makes it unlikely that Warner Brothers will negotiate another deal. The film's controversy-causing release has caused a media storm. Ann Woodward Murder Mystery//Feud FX Truman Capote VS. The Swans
What a CreepSeason 23, Episode 7Ann Woodward and the Curse of the Woodward FamilyOn October 30, 1955, William “Billy” Woodward was shot in the home he shared with his wife Ann. She told the police it was a case of mistaken identity as both carried guns to bed due to a recent spate of robberies in their town of Oyster Bay, New York. Did she kill her philandering spouse, who vocalized how much he had grown to despise her? Ann’s eventual acquittal in the case was a local Long Island scandal until Truman Capote (who had only met her once and instantly disliked her) told a scandalized (and fictionalized) version in 1975’s Answered Prayers which insinuated Ann had murdered Billy and his mother’s money bought her out of any criminal indictments. (We talked about him last September!)So, which is true? And what brought a small-town girl like Angeline Lucille Crowell to the top of cafe society to a sad, lonely end? Written during her first year at Yale, one of her fan letters was from 53-year-old J.D. Salinger--one of the most famous “genius” reclusives living in New Hampshire. The two had a correspondence, which led to a relationship where she moved in with him and gradually shrunk herself away from the world. What a CreepSeason 23, Episode 3The history of ‘ugly laws’ in America (1860-1970) & NON-Creep Gypsy Rose BlanchardLaws are supposed to protect us, but from the 1860s to the 1970s, many cities nationwide had so-called “ugly laws.” The name makes it sound like the police were walking around and deciding if people were attractive enough to be in public, but ugly laws were a way to criminalize being poor or homeless and/or having disabilities and disfigurements. And played a part in the racial segregation of public facilities, immigration bans for the “unfit,” and the eugenics movement.Sources for this episode: “The Ugly Laws: Disability in Public” by Susan SchweikGrungeMedium article by Yewande AdeMother JonesPBSSFGateWikipediaBe sure to follow us on social media. The Slashing of NYC Model Marla Hanson (1986) & NON-Creepy Surgical Charities
What a CreepSeason 23, Episode 2The 1986 Attack on Model Marla Hanson On Thursday, June 5, 1986, in New York City, 24-year-old Marla Hanson was lashed across her face with razors at the behest of her landlord (Steven Roth), who was fascinated with the rising model and upset she wanted to leave his apartment building. The case made her famous across the country for her moxie and vitality. It was also yet another reminder of how violent New York was in the 1980s. The eventual trials against Roth and later the two men he hired for the mission, Steven Bowman and Darren Norman, tried to paint Marla as a man-eater who thrived on attention. Their defense attorney, Alton H. Maddox, said at the beginning of the trial: "I will tell you about a woman named Marla Hanson, who was after every man in this city, a woman who preyed on men and their relationships with women."They were all found guilty, but Marla still lives with the emotional scars of being a victim, not just of the slashing but of the sometimes brutal justice system, which made her feel as if she were the one who should have been on trial. Today, we discuss this case and its repercussions on Marla and how she fights to protect victims. The Motion Pictures Association (MPA) Film Ratings Fail & NON-Creep Brenda Lee
What a CreepSeason 23, Episode 1The Motion Pictures Association (MPA) Film Ratings SystemWe will discuss the Motion Picture Association (MPA) film ratings system, previously known as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).Why? Because although it doesn’t always seem like movie ratings matter, they do. Movie ratings decide how big of an audience a movie gets. Anyone can see a PG-13, while an NC-17 movie can’t even run ads for their film; most theaters won’t show it. We talk about the double standards when it comes to straight sex vs. queer sex, male nudity vs. female nudity, and sex and violence.Trigger warning: Foul language and sexual situationsSources for this episode:“Breaking the Code” by Nat SegaloffColliderFilm RatingsForbesGizmodoIndie WireMotion Pictures AssociationMotion Pictures AssociationRoger EbertSlash FilmVanity FairWikipedia (Motion Picture Association film rating system)WiredBe sure to follow us on social media.
