Matt Taibbi, Elon Musk, Twitter and Media Creeps
What a CreepSeason 18, Episode 4Matt TaibbiMatt Taibbi is a journalist who has been described as a “firebrand” and whose writing is reminiscent of gonzo-style writing like the late Hunter S. Thompson (worshipped by white boys since the 1960s.) In the 1990s, he helped uncover corruption in 1990s Moscow with the paper The eXile (along with a former friend and fellow Creep Mark Ames.)As a New York-based freelancer, he went from a mouthy opinion writer for the alternative weekly, the New York Press to one of the most celebrated investigative journalists for Rolling Stone winning several awards for excelling in reporting. Featured on everything from Rachel Maddow’s show on MSNBC to Bill Maher on HBO and even on Late Night with Seth Meyer. Many people on the left claimed him as one of “theirs” who speaks truth to power with bravado, and some of his best-selling books tackled the financial shenanigans of Goldman Sachs, the idiocy of Congress, the march to the war in Iraq built on shabby evidence, and how the media is dividing Americans. Nowadays, he is a popular substack creator who rakes in millions writing about anything he damn well pleases. This is any writer's dream, but he has seemed to switch from fighting power and corruption to fawning over billionaires and power-mad lunatics like Vladamir Putin. He now writes about Trump being a victim of a press that hates him for no reason and recently was part of the big Twitter reveal from past Creep--Elon Musk. So what did he uncover? Why does he feel like a victim of woke culture? We will get into it today. Also, I had an encounter with Matt Taibbi, who did some shitty journalism for a magazine I worked for and maligned me in his column for no fucking reason except he a burr up his ass about a topic he is not an expert on and tried to throw me under the bus. For 20 years, I have been hearing friends tell me how awesome and brave he is, and I have to tell them my story and remind them he is a punk-ass bully with no genuine affection for the topic he covers and wants to swing his dick around. Today I found the article in question and will read it allowed for the first time since 2004. Then I will learn about Taibbi and why he is controversial. Like the tagline for Jaws The Revenge--this time, it's personal! What a CreepSeason 18, Episode 2Diamond Annie & the 40 Thieves/ElephantsLadies Who ThievePeaky Blinders is a popular show on Netflix about a group of thieves and gangsters in 1920s London. The most notorious of these was the “Forty Thieves/FortyElephants” gang, run by tough women who master criminals. Lana Turner and the Murder of Johnny Stompanato
What a CreepSeason 17, Episode 10The Murder of Johnny Stompanato Lana Turner was one of Hollywood’s most alluring (and controversial) actors in movie history, with star turns in the original The Postman Always Rings Twice, Imitation of Life, and Peyton Place. She was blonde, sexy, and a supposed “maneater” with eight marriages and several lovers. In 1958 she dated the former war hero and current mob hooligan Johnny Stompanato who supposedly treated her terribly. Her only child, Cheryl Crane, at 14, stabbed Johnny to death after her mother tried to break off their relationship. Cheryl was acquitted of any wrongdoing (Johnny was a BAD dude) but spent years dealing with her childhood trauma and being the daughter of a movie queen. What a CreepSeason 17, Episode 6The Murder of Betty Gore by Candy MontgomeryCandy Montgomery was just another bored 70s suburban Texas housewife when she was tried for committing a crime so heinous people still have difficulty making sense of it. It will also be adapted into an HBO series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemmons next spring. What is so unusual about a murder in 1980 (which was also adapted into a 1990 TV movie starring our forever “old man crush” Brian Dennehy, A Killing in a Small Town) that captures our imagination? The Port Chicago Disaster 1944 (Creepy U.S. History)
What a CreepSeason 17, Episode 1The Port Chicago Disaster July 1944On Monday, July 17, 1944, at just after 10 pm, the Northern California town of Port Chicago had an explosion of two ships that took the lives of over 320 sailors and injured almost 400 others. For two years, the US Navy shipped munitions around the clock at the naval base that consisted of a segregated outfit (the entire military, with FDR as its Commander in Chief, was segregated.) Everything from bullets to bombs weighing thousands of pounds was brought in and shipped in 24-hour shifts with white officers in charge of black recruits with no chance of advancement. No one received proper training in handling munitions or was given safety precautions like gloves, glasses, or any gear to protect the crew. The man who ran the shifts knew there was so much demand for product and not so much worry about safety that they bet on who could produce the most in the shortest amount of time. The black officers were not only treated poorly on the base, but they also experienced segregation in the communities where they trained and worked. After the Port Chicago disaster, 50 men refused to continue working under these dangerous conditions and were tried and convicted of treason. In one way, they helped jump-start the military's civil rights movement, but they have yet to receive proper recognition for what they went through. What a CreepSeason 16, Episode 7Kim FowleyRock CreepWhen Kim Fowley died of bladder cancer on January 15, 2015, most headlines read that he was an underground rock and roll/LA legend who managed “The Runaways” in the 1970s. He was a tall, peculiar eccentric who never had the fame he craved but had a cult-like following of slavish fans who will miss him. Some outlets, like, NPR, mentioned he was a Svengali who seemed to prey on teenage girls. In reality, everything you have heard about (and will hear today) about him is true. He was a striking, creative, intelligent artist/salesman and a cruel, ugly, pathetic, sexually abusive creep who left several women in his wake. He never paid for his crimes, but he was never a financial success either. He was NEVER as famous as he wanted to be. His body & mind, which he used to dominate and hurt others, failed him throughout his life.Trigger Warnings: Sexual Assault, Verbal Abuse, & Drug UseSources:Kim Fowley WikipediaLoudwireEW.com Jackie Fox Accuses Kim Fowley of RapeHuff Post.comPitchfork.comPitchfork 2Evelyn McDonald’s Blog PopulismEvelyn McDonald Queens of Noise: The Real Story of The Runaways (2014)Cheri Curie Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway (1989/2010)Kim Fowley: Lord of Garbage (2012)VultureThe GuardianLos Angeles TimesJackie Fox Facebook PostKathy Valentine’s Facebook PostBoing BoingEdgeplay: A Film About the Runaways by former Runways bassist Victory Tischler-Blue (2004) aka “Vicky Blue.”Be sure to follow us on social media. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire NYC March 25, 1911) Creepy History Ep.
What a CreepSeason 16, Episode 5The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory FireMarch 25, 1911One of the biggest workplace disasters in New York City happened on March 25, 1911, in a factory on the Lower East Side which would be described as a “sweatshop.” Hundreds of women jammed together in one large room at sewing machines creating the fashionable “Shirtwaist” blouses that were made on the cheap to make them affordable to the masses. The fire began on the 8th floor and eventually took over several floors in the building with doors locked, no sprinkler system in place, and fire ladders that could not reach higher than the 6th floor—146 people died, most of the women and young girls. The youngest victims were two girls--14 years old.The deaths of these people led to some of the most important worker’s rights legislation in the history of the U.S. (things we are still arguing about over 100 years later.)Trigger warnings: Death by fire, death at the workplaceSources:History.comHistory.com videoTriangle Fire MemorialAFLCIOBritannicaNew York Public Library1979 TV Movie: The Triangle Factory ScandalCBS NewsSmithsonianThe 1911 Triangle Fire Cornell UniversityUS Department of LaborTriangle: The Fire That Changed America by David Von DrehleHBO: Triangle, Remembering the FirePBS American Experience Triangle FireBe sure to follow us on social media. Creepy Santa Cruz History: "Murder Capital of the World" Edmund Kemper, Herbert Mullin
What a CreepSeason 15, Episode 8Creepy Santa Cruz Santa Cruz is one of those wonderful, sleepy destinations in the mountains of Northern California. Known for its Boardwalk and being close to the Redwoods--it is both a travel destination and the home for over 270,000 in a truly diverse population. The tension between the Mexican heritage and modern “progress” is a part of the culture that really changed when the University of Santa Cruz opened there creating a youth population in the 1960s which changed the area from being seen as a tourist destination in the summer and a religious/conservative to the hippie culture. In the early 1970s, it was, for a time, known as “The Murder Capital of the World” with several mass killers and serial rapists who preyed on the population with victims as young as four and up to the elderly. Today we talk about the history of the region, the most famous crimes of the 20th century, and why you should still visit if you ever get the chance. What a Creep: Hugh Hefner (Playboy Founder & Creep) TW: SA
What a Creep: Hugh HefnerSeason 14, Episode 10Playboy Founder & CreepOn September 17, 2017, Hugh Marston Heffner died at the age of 91. He was hailed in the press (for decades) as being solely responsible for the sexual revolution of the 60s, a champion of civil rights, a First Amendment warrior, a philanthropic activist, and a hero to women who would still be stuck home with sexless lives were it not for his brand Playboy. In Murder Among Mormons, you learned about his crime spree on Tuesday, October 15, 1985, which involved two people being killed by homemade bombs he created and left for them. But what motivated this, by all accounts, a good Mormon who seemed like the perfect family man?In this episode, I will go into Mark's background as a world-class forger and liar who ran himself and others into so much debt—he felt that setting off bombs would buy him time to figure out his financial problems. Yet, Mailer’s longtime publisher Random House said they will not be associated with this work, instead, Skyhorse publishing (which worked with Woody Allen last year) decided to take on this new work. What a Creep: Canada's Residential Schools (Non-Creeps: Dan Levy & Eugene Levy)
What a Creep: Canada’s Residential Schools Season 14, Episode 1 The systematic cultural genocide of indigenous people of North America From 1831 – 1998 North America put seven generations of indigenous people (primarily children) into residential schools to take the culture of First Nation and turn it into a Christian/European society. The Catholic Church was often involved, but the Canadian Government ran some. Over 150,000 children were forcibly taken from their families and sent to overcrowded schools that cut their hair off, changed their names, made them convert to Christianity, exposed them to violence. They were forbidden from speaking in their native language, and died were not reported to authorities. (It's estimated about 25% died from everything from illness to malnutrition.) Last year in May 2021, more than 1300 unmarked graves were found at four different former residential schools, which caused the nation to finally come to terms with a national stain that has never really been rectified.
