Justin Nguyen - Ditching Fortune 500 to Launch a Podcast for College Students, Landing an Interview in Dubai, and Creating Content Despite What People Say
"The podcast solidified something that we all as students think is happening, but we don't actually believe it because everybody is really fronting. What I mean by that is, every college student, pretty much every single one that I've talked to, they still don't know what they're doing. [Our students] share that it's ok to not know what you want to do." - Justin Nguyen, BopCast I met Justin on LinkedIn and resonated with his content right away. He was talking about alternative routes and career paths, which I'm a huge fan of after being my own boss for a few years now. His podcast is a well-produced, short, and value-packed multi-interview audio show that showcases how college students defy the odds to get to where they are. It includes practical college from everyday students. Justin Nguyen is the founder of Declassified Media and creator of the Declassified College Podcast. His podcast and content have helped hundreds of thousands of students find jobs and explore paths that other students have taken. The show has grown to over 300,000 followers on social media in the last year.In this episode, we dive into why Justin Nguyen turned down a corporate position at a Fortune 500 company to be a content creator and launch a media company for college students. You'll learn how to get into LinkedIn, and how Justin leveraged his content creation experience to participate in events around the world. Erick Cloward - Host of the Stoic Coffee Break on How Stoicism can Change Your Life, 3 Million Podcast Downloads, and a Conversation about Socialism
"The biggest thing about stoicism is understanding that there are very few things you have control over in your life. The problem is we spend a lot of time trying to control things that are out of our control. I think a lot of people try to control other people, or their reputation [when] there's very few things you can control." -Erick Cloward on StoicismStoicism has enabled me to make a massive shift in my perspective, so I'm happy to bring you today's episode.Erick Cloward found stoicism later in life. He was raised in a religious family, in a religious area and found himself consistently questioning the views that he was explicitly told not to question. After reading the book, A Guide To The Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy, he opened his mind to the world of stoicism, and what it has to offer. Erick hosts the Stoic Coffee Break podcast that has now amassed over 3 million downloads. He breaks down the philosophies, writings, and teachings of ancient Stoics like Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and the like.In today's episode, you'll discover the benefits of stoicism, why stoicism is often interpreted wrong, how Erick's podcast grew to 3 million downloads, and a first-hand view of living in a socialist country. Perry Grone - Comedian, Podcast Host, IG Reel's Legend on His Start in Standup Comedy, Content Creation and More
"At some point, I have to not care. People used to get arrested for saying a curse word on stage. Then people fought to say what you should be able to say. Now it's kind of flip-flopped where the people are telling you what you can and can't say. Comics and society fought so hard to get to a point where it's like, we should be able to say what we want to make it funny. People got arrested for saying words!" - Perry Grone on comedy's reception because of the internet. Perry Grone is a standup comedian, content creator, podcast host, and hilarious dude. His peanut butter-packed, multicultural IG Reels have entertained me for the past few months and I constantly look forward to seeing them.Perry and his brother, Dakota team up to create content which includes their podcast, The Brother Show where they interview funny folks and break down random news with a witty, comedic spin. I connected with Perry through a fellow podcast guest, Luke Miller who was on the shows a couple months back. Jake Bjorseth - How to Get 8 Billion Views on an Ad Campaign, Founding a Gen Z Media Company, and Why the Modern Influencer has Changed
"What's inevitable is the decentralization of social media. Things will become platformless, and when they do, they will become influencer-powered platforms. It will be at that moment when influencers take power from the platforms themselves, that they helped create. At the end of the day, these platforms don't exist without influencers. That is the future. That will take place in the next 5-10 years." - Jake Bjorseth on BopCast Jake Bjorseth is the founder of Trndsttrs Media - an advertising company by Gen Z'ers, for brands looking to connect with the Gen Z audience and customers. Since founding Trndsttrs, they've amassed over 10 billion impressions for their clients with countless viral ad campaigns. You may recognize names like Denny's, Garmin, the North Face, and PacSun among the many brands they've worked with. Jake has been in the space for almost 5 years now starting in college. He found himself in a room with some suits being questioned about Gen Z behaviors when he realized there was an opportunity for a business. In this episode, you'll discover how Jake and his team created one of the most successful ad campaigns in history amassing over 8 billion views on TikTok. Along with that, we touch on Jake's story and how he turned an impromptu meeting into a full-blown business from bootstrapping to dropping out of college. "For you to survive in the military, in that environment. Being in this really weird place. You have no choice but to adapt really quick or you cycle out. I think a lot of business owners who are also military will be very successful." - David JusticeIn this episode, you'll discover how David went from a college student to an Army servicemember jumping out of planes, to a car salesman, business owner, real estate investor, and author within the span of a few years. Turkish Royale - Creating a Community For Artists, by Artists, Being Great at a Job You Don't Love, and Bringing Back Independent Thinking
"MadMinds was created as a platform for local artists like myself. I came up as a rapper, I was getting scammed by all these shows. I needed to create that space where people like me, and all my friend could come and perform their hearts out. We did that for 5 years straight, and 2 years of it was no job, no school, just MadMinds. I was living in the mind of a beast, I'm going to eat no matter what. People don't realize this is a dream - you can dream it lucid." - Turkish Royale on BopCast. Artists have always surprised me on this show, and most of the time it's not because of their art itself. Turkish Royale is a rapper, artist, lyricist, business owner, and event connoisseur. He's been performing hiphop for over 8 years and launched the collective, MadMinds to build a space where artists could perform together. Turk and I have a lot in common from our journies of personal growth, working in the car industry, being rappers, and sharing the mission of trying to get our music out there to the world. It's evident that his mind and his intentions are in the right place, and that's why he's been able to cultivate a fanbase and sell hundreds of tickets to his sold-out shows. Turk is the mastermind behind the MadMinds brand and vision, but it's really his selfless attitude and genuine care for other artists that have made his events so successful. In this wide-ranging episode, we dive into the current state of media, social media, and the struggle to find conversations based on understanding and rational thought. We also cover how having a job and a work environment that doesn't align with your values can be detrimental to your mental health. Luke Miller - Life as a P.A. on Drake's Music Video, Becoming a Film Maker, and How to Be Yourself No Matter What
"I'm happy, and I think that's the best thing. I don't know if I would have said that a year ago. As much as I'm almost in the same position, now I appreciate it; I know it, I'm in it, I'm here. I'm just trying to be the best me everyday." - Luke J. Miller, BopCast Today on the show we have my man Luke Miller. Luke is a filmmaker, producer, and director from South Jersey. He's the co-host of the Freelance Network Podcast and Chatting Cinema. He's been featured, worked on, created, and co-created countless short films, music videos, and media. Luke and I met through a fellow guest and great friend, Joe Gibbs. He introduced us while at Stockton University where Luke manned the controls in the podcast room, also known as the closet. Luke graciously had me on the Freelance Network Podcast, which he co-hosted until he graduated. From there we became fast friends. It's one thing to have a friend pursuing a career in video while you're pursuing a career in audio, but it's something completely different to see them grow over the course of 2 years. When we met we were still in college trying to figure it out. We haven't stopped trying to figure it out, we just happened to carve our paths much deeper since the last time we spoke. Luke works for Oak Leaf Media, a New Jersey-based production company while writing a movie on his own, and shooting freelance films and music videos. Our conversation today encompasses these topics, as well as the small role he had in putting together one of the biggest music videos of the year. This has been a BopCast with Luke J. Miller. Tyler Braddock - Founder of The Vault Music Studio on Escaping the 9-5, Achieving 5-Year Goals, and 4 Years as a Small Business Owner
"You never know, that's the scary part. [But] I didn't even last a full year of working full time before quitting. When I was doing my 9-5, I'd work 6PM to 1AM or so - my real job started after hours. I was projecting my 5 year goals, my 10 year goals. This is pretty close to what I was envisioning at the time. I look back at it 5 years and most of it is aligned with what I wrote down." - Tyler Braddock, on BopCast Tyler Braddock is the founder and owner of The Vault in Boonton, NJ. The Vault is a music studio dedicated to mixing, mastering, tracking, and recording artists of all genres. Tyler's work ethic and mindset are unstoppable, and he continues to be a mentor for me in my life and my music. On a whim, I applied for an unpaid internship at The Vault in the summer of 2019. I didn't have a job and I was paying my rent from savings, but I knew I wanted to be around producers and musicians. I drove 45 minutes each way to get to the studio each day, but it didn't matter. The experience I gained was invaluable and as Tyler did his job, he patiently responded to my countless questions about producing, mixing, and mastering music. This is the second on-location podcast for us, and I can't thank Tyler enough for letting us come to the studio to record this. Gabbi Truppi - Founding an Ice Cream Shop at 22, the State of Small Business in Flemington, NJ and the Biggest Lesson You Need to Learn
This is a special episode, being that it's our first on-location BopCast ever. We traveled to Flemington, NJ to interview Gabbi for the second time. Gabbi Truppi is an outlier. She's a young entrepreneur who is pursuing her dreams regardless of the status quo. She embodies the risk-taking, fast-moving characteristics of a young and hungry business owner. I interviewed her for the first time when she was 20 years old and had just launched her ice cream truck, Scoops on Wheels. Now at 22 years old, she founded, Humdoo Ice Cream which is the basis of our interview today. After the engine broke down on her infamous truck with countless events booked for her to appear at, she took it as a sign to grow and move forward. Already in the works was her physical location, "Humdoo Ice Cream," on Stangl Road in Flemington, NJ. In this episode, we cover what it's like to launch 2 businesses as a young, female entrepreneur, the difference between an ice cream truck and an ice cream shop, and the biggest lesson she's learned by launching this new business. We also spoke about Gabbi's philosophy around ice cream, the meaning of the word Humdoo, and more. I had a blast recording this episode in her shop and hope to do many more BopCasts on-location. Ron Solemn - 1 Million+ Plays on "Bodybags," Building the Right Team, and Staying True to Yourself as an Artist
The artist's mind will never fail to fascinate me. If you create and release music, you're setting in motion an unknown chain of events. People can guess and assume, but at the end of the day, "the fans are always smarter than you," to paraphrase John Mayer (a quote I bring up way too much). That does not mean that the artist is not smart, it means that the artist never knows exactly how the world will interpret what they let it consume. Ron Solemn, for example, released his song, "Body Bags" in 2018 and it continues to receive 10's of thousands of plays as it climbs closer to 1 million on Spotify alone. As Ron mentioned in the interview, "Body Bags" was one of a series of songs released in 2018, and he did not expect it to gain the traction that it did - something I find so interesting as I come across more examples of the market knowing what's good more often than the artist. Ron Williamson is a rapper, singer, and songwriter releasing hiphop and RnB music with a focus on mental health. He's done this under the name Ron Solemn for the past 5 years. In this podcast we cover:Ron's transition from singing to rapping and songwriting, and how friends influenced him to rap. Gaining confidence on stage by singing covers. Songwriting, going by feel and creating a full song from an idea. Marketing music, and remarketing released songs. His song, "Bodybags" and how it went viral and gained almost 1M plays. Using music to say what's on his mind. The Manifesting Musician - Country Soul Singer, Amanda Sikoral on Songwriting, Performing, Growing on TikTok and A Live Performance on BopCast
Amanda Sikoral is a musician that blends singer-songwriter, country and soul into a melodic fusion of hooks, and lyrics that you won't forget. She even performed the chorus for her newest single, "Home," at the end of the podcast. On top of her own music, she's been branded "The Manifesting Musician," for good reason. Her positive, daily TikTok mantras have garnered hundreds of thousands of views, and over 9000 followers on the platforms. She blends songwriting with short, positive affirmations and was pushed to make an entire song out of one after hundreds of people requested it. I loved our conversation about music, growing as an artist, social media, and more. One thing I've realized while doing this is that meeting in person is mattering less and less. I've had countless guests come to my house to record after only a phone call or folks like Amanda who I met on IG, and then hopped on Zoom to record. In this episode we cover:Amanda's willingness to take her music to the next level after 15 years of practice. Blending country and soul while being from New Jersey. Influences growing up, and how that shaped her sound today. Producing from scratch, and how she learned to improve. Her rise to TikTok fame as the "Manifesting Musician."How she created positive mantras that allowed her to grow on the platform, and gain thousands of fans using her sounds daily. Live performances, and how one chance encounter lead to her first one. Amanda's aspirations and the future of her music. We hope you enjoyed the show!Follow AmandaStream her single, "Home." Gi theRapper on Staying Consistent in Music through Organization, Starting a Podcast, and Discovering the Potential of Real Estate
I love all of my guests, but as an artist myself, I feel like I connect with other artists quickly and easily. The artist's schedule can be prone to disorganization, but Gino Lomanto, known by his artist name, Gi theRapper has created a consistent system for releasing music. If you've noticed, my consistency has been nonexistent in the last year as far as my music goes, and it was inspiring to hear Gi's simple and effective system for keeping his content and tracks on the schedule. The worst thing you can do as an artist is fall behind, and this was even more motivation for me to get back on track. In this episode we cover: Gino's Podcast, "Vino with Gino," the reason for starting it, and his aspirations moving forward. His interest in real estate and its specific facets that made it particularly appealing.Gi's consistency in music, and the system he put in place to stay consistent. Relationships, dating, and being upfront with yourself about your goals with people you're seeing. Why having a great producer can be the key to finding your sound. Gi's next moves in music.Gi and I got together to release, "Easy 2 Call" a quarantine single with our spin on how easy it is to simply make a phone call. He also interviewed me on his podcast, "Vino with Gino," and we had a blast talking music while sippin' a drink. Stay tuned for our video to Easy 2 Call coming soon. Founder of Strange Living Collective - Nick Gates on Relentless Positivity, Getting Married at 23, How to Plan to Achieve Any Goal, and The Difference Between Purpose and Passion
The last few episodes have been packed full of examples of how mindset and self-improvement can (and will) change your life. Personally, I have some pessimistic tendencies when things don't go my way, but in the last few years I've become much more positive. Contributing to that positivity in my life has been today's guest, Nick Gates - founder of Strange Living Collective, coach, and speaker. Nick's relentless positivity has fueled what he calls, "The Beautiful Journey:" a 3-step process of self-discovery he developed as he set out to build a life surrounded by his dreams, purpose, and passion. In today's episode we cover: Relentless positivity and if it's possible to maintain positive through anything. How his business, Strange Living Collective came to be and what he learned building it.The Beautiful Journey: Nick's personal 3-stage process to find and live a fulfilled life.Overcoming negative emotions, and how to use others to identify your flaws. The power of coaching to build the life you want and identity blindspots. The power of planning to achieve any goal, and how to start immediately. This episode was completely different than my last two with Nick, but somehow even more mind-blowing and uplifting. I had the privilege to go through a simple exercise after the show that changed my perspective on my own life goals. Co-Host of The Demigod Chronicles and Financial Analyst Christian Lopez on Podcasting as an Introvert, Molding and Changing Your Identity, and Applying Discipline to Anything
There are very few people who have an unstoppable mindset - the type of people you would trust in any situation regardless of what is going on. Christian Lopez is a financial analyst, college graduate, co-host of the Demi-God Chronicles, and self-improvement aficionado. He's one of the most well-read folks we've had on the podcast and I can't say enough about his presence and articulation. At the age of 8, Christian was separated from his mother and sister in a custody battle. He was forced to live with his father for 6 years, and in the cold winter of 2004, he began to experience life differently. Leaving Garfield, NJ to attend a catholic school in 2010, Christian's life began to open up in a positive way. He found himself striving on the football field and later attended Muhlenberg College to play football after high school. Muhlenberg showed him an entirely different side to life. More on Christians's story on his website. In this episode we cover: Overcoming introversion to become a podcast host Thinking outside of the box to create podcast content The power of mindset in your life How Christian had to change his entire identity as a football player after collegeHow comments about his veganism fueled him to become obsessed with his fitness goalsHow the self-esteem movement ruined a generation of kids What it takes to learn a second languageBudget your time effectively to remain ambitious and accomplish your goalsThis was seriously a life-changing episode for me. "The Real Johnny Bravo," Kurt Heeren on Gaining 100k on TikTok, Moving to Cali., Finding a Job You Love out of College and Personal Training
Remember the show Johnny Bravo? I think back to watching cartoons as a kid, and hearing his classic catchphrases while the self-proclaimed macho man attempted to court every lady he laid eyes on. Lucky enough for me, a long-time friend of mine is the internet-proclaimed, "Real Johnny Bravo." Kurt Heeren is a fitness trainer at F45 Training, an Accounts Receivable expert at EXOS, and most importantly: he's the Real-Life Johnny Bravo. He's garnered over 100,000 followers on TikTok in less than 6 months. After a friend filmed him at a Halloween party as Johnny Bravo, the video went viral on TikTok and Kurt began to realize that his small time in the spotlight could lead to some big things. In this episode we talk about: Leaving New Jersey to move to California How being mislead turned his Cali. move into shit-show the first hour he was therePersonal training, and what it's like taking a group fitness class vs. 1-on-1 Finding and loving a 9-5 while persuing dreams on the sideHow his Halloween costume turned into a viral sensation overnight His TikTok philosophy, and where he's taking his persona next I enjoyed sitting down with Kurt on this episode, catching up after all of these years and hearing his rise to TikTok fame. Vegan Athlete Sean Nastelon on the Science of Modern Nutrition, Holistic Health, and Extreme Discipline
Sean Nastelon is a holistic health coach who believes with conviction that he's figured out the perfect diet for the human genome. What does that mean? I have no idea. So I sat him down to talk about it. On this episode we cover these topics and more:The issue with the traditional American diet, and how we were lied to since childhood. Why and how eating meat is bad for your health. The science behind the vegan diet. The water your drinking is not what you think it is. Alkaline versus acidic foods and why knowing the difference could change your life.Inflammation and its effect on the body. How Sean practices extreme discipline, and doesn't give in to temptation. I connected with Sean on Instagram a couple of years back. I thought he was going to try to sell me a workout program, but he turned out to an extremely kind and community-oriented person. He went on to build an Instagram community of like-minded people which was the result of multiple podcast guests for myself and even a collaboration with a fellow artist 'GitheRapper,' in 2020. Sean isn't only the most jacked' vegan I've ever met, he's actually the most disciplined and physically fit person I've ever spoken with. Trett and I were talking about this episode for days after (and will continue to) and we both agreed it's one of the most powerful episodes in the history of BopCast. Comment Hacking, Untraditional Marketing, and Launching a Podcast about Mindset with Harrison Kelly
As you know, many great friendships start with a LinkedIn direct message. Harrison Kelly connected with me on LinkedIn in March 2020 and since then I've had the privilege to help him launch his podcast, "The Innovative Mindset" which has garnered more audio plays than any podcast I've been a part of. Harrison is an SEO and Content marketing consultant at Clean Media by day full-time, and also the social media director for TailHand: a new workbench for contractors. Clean Media is owned and operated by the director of SEO at Audible, AJ Mihalic who's been in marketing for over 10 years. These pursuits along with Harrison's podcast fuel his drive to learn more about people, and also allow him to use his marketing mind to take projects to the next level. We had a wide-ranging conversation today about how Google's algorithm works, how to comment on posts to get hundreds of thousands of people to view your profile, and how our generation might end overworking. I've known Tuzz for years now. We had mutual friends in high school and hit it off after celebrating the fact that everybody around us called us by some version of our last names. Tuzz's actual name is Lauren Tuozzolo and she also goes by "Lolascend" on her Twitch profile which has recently been gaining traction for her on-air personality and action-packed gameplay while streaming the game, "Apex Legends."Fast forward 4 or 5 years after we became friends, and Lauren now has a full-time job at nCino - the world's leader in cloud banking. In this episode, she details what it took to get this job, and how combining her passion for film and her love for analytics led her to the exact dream job she was looking for. On top of her freelance film projects, full-time job, Twitch Streaming, and helping me with my web development for Podcast Principles, Lauren also has a love for music which she gave us a taste of on the podcast. A Rare Live Performance on BopCast - How to Bend Genres, Handle Opinions of Your Music and Get the Room Jumpin' with Lupe Dragon
I met Lupe Dragon for the first time at a MadMinds artist open-mic. When I saw her, I assumed she was a singer. What I got wrong about her was the fact that she's also a rapper, songwriter, and most notably an incredible performer. Her energy is infectious and you can tell she is there only to pour her heart into her music; not to impress anybody in the audience or try to make you like what she creates.Lupe has been releasing music since high school and she recalls some conversations on YikYak - an app for people to speak about others anonymously - where she read conflicting opinions on her sound. Since then, she has never let the opinions of others get in the way of her songwriting and you can tell by her raw and emotion-filled lyrics. Lupe emphasizes the part her influences played on her being able to open up in her music the way she does. Thank you for tuning in, and I hope you enjoyed this one as much as I did recording it. How to Open for Big Rappers as a New Artist, a Conversation with Mod Sun and Quitting the 9-5 to Start a Production Company with AK40DEVIN
I met Devin Dwyer, known by his stage name AK40DEVIN at a MadMinds open mic event. I've mentioned the MadMinds countless times throughout this podcast, but it wasn't until our video shoot with MadMinds co-founder, fellow BopCast guest and artist, Sye for our song, "5 Fingers," where I actually got to know Devin. When I met him I saw him as a videographer and had no idea he had been rapping, writing and releasing music for over 6 years. I then went through his discography to discover songs about his childhood, his brothers, inspirations and his son who is now 3 years old. On this episode, you'll hear how Devin went from working at a pizza shop to launching his own videography business. Also, how he bought tickets to his own show to build his reputation as an artist and performer. Finally, he speaks on his music, influences and how not to get into the videography world when you have no experience. I had a great time talking with Devin and he even freestyled a bit once we turned the cameras off! Starting a DJ Company at 15, Launching a Nonprofit to Help Kids Get Scholarships and Balancing Everything While Becoming a Doctor with Ethan Liebross
Back in 2015, at age 15 Ethan Liebross had a crazy idea to start a DJ and entertainment company. He worked at the local ice rink and had been DJing there since 14, but felt he could make more money and entertain even more people if he took it on the road with his own equipment. Ethan came to me with the idea in 2016. He asked me if I could MC the events and drive us there because he didn't even have a license yet. I had been into music for a long time, but this is something I had never done before. I agreed, we started booking gigs and to our surprise we ran an actual entertainment company in high school. Sure, there were some nightmare gigs - that's just being young and unaware. We were naive, but the experience shaped us and led me into a 6 year DJing career I still pursue today. On this episode, Ethan speaks about his mindset around starting the company, how the idea formed and what he learned from it. On top of that, he tells us how he balances a non-profit, medical school, authoring books and educating students all at the same time. I have a lot of respect for him and what he's accomplished at the ripe age of 21. He's garnered media attention with his non-profit, The College Prep Project: an initiative that brings college students together to help high school students land scholarships. Ethan will continue to do big things as he and his passions grow. BopCast Has a Producer Now? Let's See What He's All About - The Producer Episode with Trett Shepherd
It's been a long time coming for BopCast. We've been interviewing folks for over 3 years and it was finally time to make it 'we' for real. Our sponsor, sodabeats.com was the first big change of the year and I'd like to introduce the second. As you may know, it takes a team to run this podcast. Our video editor Brandon has transformed the show with this ability to edit with multiple camera angles. Ryan Kelly revamped the logo, Matt Kane created the intro and now Trett Shepherd will be able to produce for us. Trett Shepherd is a salesman and musician from Kingwood, New Jersey. He ended up reaching out to me after I posted a few stories searching for somebody to help us out with the podcast. Host of Bowhunter Chronicles Adam Miller on Growing a Hunting Podcast, Conservation, Philosophy and Varying Styles of Bowhunting
Adam Miller and I met on Facebook - the place where all great relationships start in the podcast world. I had asked him about some tech he was using to switch camera angles and it led me down a road of discovery starting with his podcast, Bowhunter Chronicles. After listening to a few episodes I knew I had to have him on. Adam is a pharmacist by trade, but he and his co-host started Bowhunter Chronicles a few years ago as an outlet. They felt unrepresented in the hunting world and figured there needed to be a place to openly admit and speak about good and bad hunts as well as have the ability to talk with experts in the space. What started as a side project has now gained 10's of thousands of listeners, countless sponsors, a Patreon account and an intriguing weekly show to listen to whether you're a hunter or not. On this episode we speak about the stigma that surrounds hunting, why hunting is conservation, the thing you should never overlook when starting, and how Adam grew the podcast from the ground up. Derek Frey 2 Years Later - We Met Gary Vee, But Did We Take His Advice?
In November, 2019 Derek Frey and I met Gary Vee at Winelibrary in New Jersey. Without him, I would've never met the guy I looked up to and learned from for 6 years. Since that meeting with Gary Vee both of us have gone on to pursue business. Derek has had his company, Precision Care Detailing for over 8 years and I've been in business with Podcast Principles (my podcast production company) for over a year; mostly inspired by my conversation with Gary. On this episode, we take a look at what we've been doing since we last met. Derek talks about going from detailing cars to cranes and on that note, how to properly wash your car so you don't ruin your paint. Finally, he speaks on being involved in 2 bands: The Robbers and Sister Salvation and lets us know what the rest of the year looks in terms of playing live. Hope you enjoyed the episode as much as we did! I love these catch up episodes. We hope to have another conversation in 2 years. Q Swervo is a trader, investor, mentor, teacher and founder of Tiger Iye. We fast forward 2 years to see where he is at now. I had Q on the show two years ago after he had been trading for a short time. He was making money from it, but not enough to quit his day job. On that podcast he told me he'd be able to quit his job, move out and build a life off of investing and now he's done it. On this episode we speak about Tiger Iye and how to start investing. Q breaks down the philosophy and psychology that go into trading. He also speaks about the reality of trading and if it's actually sustainable for most people. There are many emotions that flood your body when you're buying and selling stocks and Q speaks on the important of building a community around you to support you and help you as you go. Buying and Selling Designer Shoes, Transitioning from Rap to Pop and the Impact of God and Religion with Sye Music
I met Sye in the studio at The Vault; Tyler Braddocks recording studio in Boonton, NJ. I was interning for free and barely able to pay my rent, but the artists I met there made it all worth it. Sye is a rapper and songwriter from Rivers Edge, New Jersey. He's built a fanbase over the last few years and began his career under the name Rightful Disciple before transitioning to 'Sye' in late 2019. The new name fits him well, and his versatility is apparent in his flows and even more so in his hooks. He's the type of artist that can leave you with a stank face after hearing the verse and later that day you'll still have the hook lodged in your head. Seeing the evolution of Sye and myself has been a rewarding experience. We had the opportunity to write, record and shoot a video for our song, "5 Fingers" that appeared on his first EP as 'Sye', titled "Everything in Between." I suggested a hook, Sye suggested a beat and we came together to create something special. Hope you enjoyed listening to this episode as much as we did recording it! Marijuana, Homemade Beer, Indica vs. Sativa and How My Cousin Became a Weed Grower with Kyle Markovitch
I'd like to welcome the first of my family members to appear on BopCast, my cousin Kyle Markovitch. While we may look similar, we do completely different things. Kyle works as a lead grower at a Marijuana dispensary. His primary job is one that enthusiasts dream about, but it takes some serious time and effort to get into this field and even more to make it your living. On today's episode we cover how exactly Kyle got into the field, and what he had to do along the way. This is in no way an exact roadmap of how to be a grower, but instead one persons story of starting with an idea, and making it happen. On top of that, I ask him to explain things like trichomes, and the difference between sativa and indica. I hope you enjoyed learning about this as much as I did, and huge thanks to Kyle for doing this! We had been wanting to for years, and it was great timing. Rapper & Lyricist Young Benny on his Writing Process, Influences, Family as Motivation and Handling People Who Don't Understand Your Vision
Young Benny is a friend, rapper, and lyricist. He's been recording and releasing music for over 2 years and in that time has generated a fanbase of thousands, with his most popular song, "On This" garnering over 50k views. Some people are naturals at what they do, others have to work 10x harder to make it look natural, but Benny has a presence about him. He impressed me most when I saw him for the first time at an open mic in 2019. I remember him hoping on stage, freestyling an acapella with no beat, and grabbing the whole rooms attention. We got deep on this episode. Benny spoke about his influences, and his family being the biggest motivator to achieve success. As well as, what it's like growing up not knowing his fathers true age until Benny was in his 20's. Finally, we touched on the music industry, recording, and his writing process. I hope you all enjoyed this episode of season 3. How to Apply Discipline to Anything, Being Lost at Sea with No Captain, and Making 6 Figures in College with Kadeem Leslie
Kadeem Leslie is an author, teacher, coach, investor, business owner and classically trained Cellist. His most recent work, "The Full Student" captures his experience over the last 7 years, and transforms it into a detailed, actionable guide on how to make the most out of college, in and out of class.Typically I do not accept interview requests on the show, but I had to make an exception for Kadeem. When it comes to impact, this kid is a young Daymond John, or Tony Robins. On this episode, we discuss discipline and how to apply it to anything, how his mothers wide-reaching actions impacted thousands, and why it's the motivation for him to do even more. We could have talked for another 2 hours, but I hope you enjoyed listening as much as we did recording it. Selling an Antique Slot Machine to Earn $3000, Dropping Out of College to Start a Business, and Moving to Tennessee on a Whim with Chris Miller
Chris Miller is a modern renaissance man - doing what he wants, when he wants to do it. We've infamously categorized his decisions as, 'miller moves'. After attending a vocational school during high school, his teacher gave him the 'in' to get into a state college, because his grades didn't make the cut. While in college, he skipped class to flip items on eBay and traveled home every weekend to sell antiques. After dropping out 2 years in, he worked for a contractor that taught him how not to run a company. Chris used his experience from buying, selling, contracting and carpentry to start a carpentry business - Chris Miller Contracting. After some success with the business, as well as buying and selling, he is now moving from NJ to Nashville, TN to work on interior design builds, and see where his travels takes him. We hope you enjoy listening to this wide ranging conversation as much we did recording it.Find Chris Here on Instagram Links Below:_Follow Chris - https://www.instagram.com/chrismillerdoesart/@sullybop on InstagramSearch 'BOPCAST' on any platform! Untraditional Song Structures, Bob Dylan Influences, and Growing up in Newark, NJ with Tunezzup! (Rashawn Blake)
I met Tunez at an open mic hosted by MadMinds - a community of New Jersey artists that come together to host performances, and allow anybody to showcase their talent. Tunez had that artist energy when I met him. It felt like he was on a level of his own, and we clicked immediately. We've been in the studio with the same producers, but because our styles are quite different, Tunez asked me to play guitar while he rapped and sang at a show in February 2020. It was an experience I'll never forget. On this episode, we speak about influences like Bob Dylan, and also riff on that idea of Tunez being in his own element. He tells us, "he's an average man that lives a not so average life." I believe him. Creating A Business in College, Choosing Wants from Needs, and How to Network to Build Relationships with Stefano Selorio
Stefano Selorio messaged me on Instagram 2 years ago to tell me he found my podcast, and to let me know he appreciated and enjoyed the content I was putting out. I had never received a messge like that from a stranger, so I was thrilled. Fast forward 2 years later and Stefano is somebody I talk to on a weekly, almost daily basis and over the last year we've forged a friendship around life, entrepreneurship and building a business. We often have hour long, wide ranging conversations so we thought it would be valuable to record one, and upload it as an official BopCast. Stefano is the founder and CEO of Carevocacy, helping seniors learn and use technology in the modern world. He's a soon-to-be college grad, and in this episode we cover how our businesses started in college, challenges that come with having too many passions, wants versus needs, how you can be up front with yourself about them, and finally how you can use email to target your prospective clients or co-workers. How to Get a Job Without Applying and Why Starting Your Business While Working a 9-5 Makes More Sense with Austin Belcak
Can you imagine landing your dream job without even applying online? When I started my LinkedIn journey, I was happy to connect with Austin. I was working at a marketing company, but I hated my job. I would always enjoy reading Austins posts about job search tips, and how to land your dream job, not just some position to pay the bills. Fast forward 6 months and I quit that job, pivoted to podcasting full time and interviewed Austin about his company, Cultivated Culture. He created the business to help regular folks land dream jobs - I'm not talking the 4.0 Harvard grads, I'm talking the 3.4GPA state school type of people. What he was doing stood out to me.In this interview we dive into how his college side hustles led him to start and run a successful business, and the reason he stayed at his 9-5 at Microsoft. I'm also happy to announce he since quit that job, and runs Cultivated Culture full timeFind Austin on LinkedIn here, and IG here where he posts daily tips and insight. How to Invest in Realestate with No Experience, Building a Community from Scratch, and Why 9-5's are Overrated with Travis Chappell
I originally found Travis Chappell on his own Instagram advertisement for his podcast launch company. I sent a direct message asking to interview him, he obliged and since the recording of this podcast I've connected with over 15 different people in his, "Build Your Network" Facebook group - the community he started while deciding what to do after a career in door to door sales. Travis is the first person I've met that went to all levels of school on the same campus; from kindergarten to college. He's from a Christian background and left the pre-determined path of ministry to pursue a calling to help others and generate income in the process without a 9-5. It's people like Travis that make us realize it's possible to do what you want, without having to sacrifice freedom, family, or money.Travis is an entrepreneur, investor, community builder, podcaster and more recently, founder of Guestio - a better way to find and book guests for your podcast. Gaining 40k+ fans, Building Confidence as an Artist, and a Run in With the FBI with Samad Savage
"Life is hard as shit, but man. You're either going to sit there and take the fucking punches, or fight back." - "Goodnight" by Samad Savage Samad Savage is one of those artists that just has 'it'. The it-factor that only some people have, and you can't put your finger on why. I first met him at a Mad Minds Artist Showcase event last year, and his energy was palpable on and off the stage. When I spoke to him for the first time he had no idea who I was, and he still treated me with the most respect. I reached out later in the year to do the podcast and he was immediately down. Samad is one of New Jersey's biggest artists with 40k+ fans and now, his track "Goodnight" has garnered millions of plays online along with his full length albums. They say a song is not great without an incredible performance and man, does Samad put on one hellavu' show! On my podcast we spoke about his childhood, and how it influenced his songwriting, his experiences with police, and his willingness to be open about his religion. I could not have been happier with how this episode turned out. PS: when things open up, you HAVE to see him live. Golfer Turned Rapper Aaron 'Rhaney Daze' on Discipline, Details and Self Made Artistry
Aaron Rhaney, known by his stage name Rhaney Daze has been consistently growing as an artist over the last 3 years. He's a rapper and producer from New Jersey. Originally pursuing a career in golf, Rhaney was at the top of his game when leaving high school and afterwards played at Jackson State; an HSBCU in Mississippi. According to Patch.com, "In 2009, Rhaney qualified for The U.S. Kids Teen World Championship at Pinehurst No. 8 and competed in the Garden State Challenge Cup representing the Bergen Pioneer Tour. He also finished second in the Bergen Pioneer Tour Player of the Year point standings in 2009 and 2010." But ultimately, it was not golf that fueled his desire to be known and heard - it was music. Aaron began learning music production and recording in college, and ultimately became a recognizable figure in the New Jersey hiphop scene, garnering 10's of thousands of plays off of just 10 singles. On this episode, we dive into his creative process, the attention to detail that characterizes every release, and the stigma that surrounds African Americans in a time where the country was so divided.
