The 2 Types of Motivation (and why you can't have one without the other)

Hello and welcome to Episode 127 of the People Powered Business Podcast! In today’s episode of the podcast we’re discussing the 2 key types of motivation, and why you can’t have one without the other. Many employers focus on what we call extrinsic motivators, in that they try and motivate their staff using a source external from the person. Could be a reward, an incentive, a bonus, a gift, lunch – those kinds of things. These thigs usually cost money, and when they don’t have the effect the employer was hoping for – in that the employee is not more motivated across the board, or more committed to their role, the employer becomes resentful of the motivation process. The truth is, these extrinsic motivation techniques can work effectively, but only when the employee is already intrinsically motivated in the role, and as a result engaged. Without this foundation piece of intrinsic motivation, the extrinsic tactics are a short term win at best.In todays’ episode we discuss the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, and why getting intrinsic right first is imperative to motivating your employees. If you’d like to ask questions or start a discussion about motivating your people, I have an invitation for you.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? 3 Reasons Your Employees Motivation Might Be MIA

Hello and welcome to Episode 125 of the People Powered Business Podcast! In today’s episode of the podcast, I’m unpacking 3 key reasons motivation might be missing in action with your team right now. Before doing that though, I thought it was important to look at what motivation is, how it correlates with employee engagement and how engagement impacts our business generally.I shared with you a really great distinction between motivation and engagement, which was beautifully articulated by Effectory in this article:https://www.effectory.com/knowledge/why-you-should-be-thinking-about-engagement-and-motivation/“Engagement is a sense of purpose, belonging, and commitment to an organization, whereas motivation is the willpower and drive to act on those feelings. Employee engagement serves as a foundation for your employees to do their best work, while motivation is the fuel or energy required to actually do it.”Then we dive into 3 key reasons I am witnessing employee motivation seemingly being MIA right now.If you’d like to ask questions about employee motivation, or share your experiences with motivating your team, I have an invitation for you. An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? Have we clearly communicated and articulated them to our people? and are they realistic and reasonable for the person and the role? if not, the problem lies with us, not them.Assuming we are clear on our expectations, they are reasonable, and we’ve clearly articulated them, and we are still frustrated, what’s next?If you still find yourself frustrated by an employee, it comes down to 3 main causes:There is a skills gap;Their motivation is missing in action; You’re trying to put a square peg in a round hole. And this is where the free guide comes in. The Hidden Benefits of Investing in Training and Upskilling Your People

Hello and welcome to Episode 115 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today we’re talking about the hidden benefits of investing in training, developing and upskilling your staff. For a long time there has been a misconception that learning and skill development is an employees responsibility. But times have changed, and I’m going to challenge you on that. The reality is the skills that got the employee to us, and to where they are now, are likely not the skills that we need in them in the future, so it really is our responsibility to develop their skills and provide the training they will need to be successful in our workplace in the future. For many businesses, training is seen as a cost, but when done correctly it really is an investment, not only in the individual employee, but in the business. Research shows us that a majority of Australian employees want to learn new skills, are concerned about their lack of skill development at work, and feel that their roles are outgrowing them. Yet studies also show as that as employers we aren’t doing a great job of providing training and development opportunities.Given how hard it is to acquire new skills into our business with the market the way it is, wouldn’t it make sense to invest in upskilling the great people we have?Providing training and development opportunities doesn’t just have the obvious benefits that we all understand, there are also a lot of hidden benefits, such as improved morale and motivation, the reciprocity of feeling valued, improved innovation and increase retention rates. An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? Why 46% of New Hires Fail

Hello and welcome to Episode 112 of the People Powered Business Podcast! Today we’re unpacking a staggering statistic – that is that 46% of new hires fail! That’s right – almost half of all new hires don’t make it through their first 18 months. Now that’s a shocking number at the best of times, but in an environment where businesses have resorted to ‘panic hiring’ due to the lack of applicants in the market, it becomes even more concerning that there is a higher chance you’ll find yourself in this situation. In today’s episode I share the 3 magic ingredients you need to ensure successful hiring decisions and be on the right side of the numbers. It really is this simple, and comes down to 3 key things: Creating the right role;Hiring at the right time;Finding the right person, someone that has the skills, motivation and is a great fit.Without all 3 it’s pot luck at best – so they are really important ingredients to consider. Also mentioned in today’s episode were some previous episodes of the podcast. The first was creating your organisational structure by doing the Clean Slate Exercise, you can check out more on that here: https://media.whooshkaa.com/show/11485/episode/714868.mp3The second was the importance of Position Descriptions. 3 Ways to Create the Clarity Your People Crave

Hello and welcome to Episode 111 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today we’re chatting about something that I was quite surprised I hadn’t already covered here on the podcast – clarity. When it comes to running a successful business clarity is absolutely king, but when it comes to our staff we sometimes aren’t so great at being clear. We fear that it makes us ‘mean’ or ‘bossy’ but actually clarity is what our people want. When we aren’t clear with our people about what is expected from them, we are actually doing them a disservice.Today I share with you 3 things you can do right now to create clarity for your team, and ultimately to help the business. The first thing is to get clear on your organisational structure by doing the Clean Slate Exercise, you can check out more on that here:https://media.whooshkaa.com/show/11485/episode/714868.mp3The second thing is to get clear on roles and responsibilities by updating or creating Position Descriptions. You can learn more about creating Position Descriptions here:https://media.whooshkaa.com/show/11485/episode/788029.mp3Thirdly get the team clear about your goals and objectives and what their KPI’s and objectives are in relation to this over the next 3, 6 and 12 months through a team strategy meeting. An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? Are You Looking for an Exit Sign?

Hello and welcome to Episode 102 of the People Powered Business Podcast! Today we’re chatting about something that might seem a little taboo – but I don’t think it needs to be, and that is when is it the right time to look for an exit sign for one of your team. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a decision to take lightly, and yes you need to make sure you’re following all of the required workplace legislation, wherever you are located, but sometimes it’s the best thing for you and the employee in question. Today we discuss the scenarios that are likely to have you questioning whether it’s time to look for an exit strategy for this person. We also discuss the signs to look out for in your employee if they are looking to make a move. These signs are absolutely not direct, and often quite subtle, but they absolutely tell you that the person is checked out, and may be actively looking to exit the business. Importantly, we also looked into what the repercussions are if you put it off, don’t take action and don’t exit someone when you really need to. The consequences can be far more difficult to deal with than the actual exit. As promised in today’s episode, I have a brand new resource for you to help you identify what sort of problem employee you have, and what the solution is to that specific type of problem employee. Is an exit strategy right or is it something else entirely? Find out by grabbing your free guide: Is it me or is it them? How to deal with a difficult staff member without opening a can of worms, even if you hate confrontation. Whether the problems are subtle or obvious, to do with skills, attitude, behaviour or performance this guide has the answers for you. Click here to grab the guide.

Building Trust With Your Teams - Part 2

Hello and welcome to Episode 96 of the People Powered Business Podcast! Today we’re continuing our 3 part series all about building trust with and in our teams. Trust is such a foundation to a successful, cohesive and productive team and ultimately to a successful business. In fact Simon Sinek says “a team is not a group of people who work together, a team is a group of people who trust each other”. So without trust, you actually don’t have a team. But defining trust, being able to identify it, and then working out how to nurture and build it, that’s a little harder to do. So whilst some leaders are innately good at it others need to work a little harder. In today’s episode we took a deeper look at 3 more of the 8 Pillars of Trust as designed by David Horsager’s. After last week kicking off with 2 of what I think are the most important pillars clarity and consistency, today we looked at commitment, competency and contribution. Whilst not always as obvious, or even practical to see, hopefully todays discussion provides insight and food for thought about how these behaviours help to build and nurture trust in our teams. Next week I’ll be back to wrap up the series by investigating the final 3 pillars and summarizing the trust – engagement relationship and the importance of trust in building high performing, resilient and loyal teams. An Invitation: If you’d like to connect with other businesses who are also juggling the challenges of teams, I’d love you to join us inside our free Facebook Group, HR Support for Australian Businesses, so I can learn more about what’s working for you and any challenges you might be having. How this 1 Thing Helped Her Set Her Team Up for Success

Hello and welcome to Episode 82 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today we’re joined by Loren Bartley, CEO of Impactiv8.Loren shares her journey to FINALLY doing performance appraisals in her business, and how, after 12 years, finally getting on top of this has allowed her to stop avoiding, remove the fear, take control and most importantly set her team up for success. What I most loved in what Loren shared today was the realisation that:Performance Reviews aren’t just about pay rises; The framework she has implemented has allowed her to hire good people, who might have been asking for high salaries, but to bring them on at a pay level she is comfortable with, and then increasing their salaries once they have proven themselves; She has created KPI’s as part of the process, which absolutely will help to drive performance; andAs her business grows, the structure she has established now will allow for her to stay in the drivers seat, and not feel overwhelmed trying to implement all of this when she has a larger team.Loren mentioned the amazing work her team are doing with recipients of the Victorian Government grant, you can find out more about that right here:Find out about Impavtiv8 and the Mentoring GrantsBefore I go, I have a special invitation for you.
