Good morning! On my way to work, I unload a few thoughts on podcasting and using Instagram Direct Message. Podcasting is going to gain even more popularity thanks to Google Home and Alexa. Consuming a podcast is MUCH more convenient than watching a video. It's also good to diversify your content output. If you play on only one platform, you will live and die on that one platform (*ahem VINE). Instagram DM is the hot and fresh take on email. It's the Email account of 2017. I've been able to reach the Big Boys of the Youtube world by simply sending them a DM. We aren't all used to checking our DM so when we actually get a DM, it grabs your attention. Don't knock it until you try it. What seems dumb or only for the teenagers might actually be the launch pad for your business or brand. 2) Become An Expert Not only should you try these platforms out but you should become somewhat of an expert in these platforms. Know how to upload Instagram stories, know how to advertise on Facebook, learn what a geofilter is. Only then can you say that this platform isn't right for your company. 3) Understand the Workflow When uploading content to this platform, does it match your workflow? Are there too many barriers to using the platform? Find this out. 4) Don't Use Followers/Subscribers/Likes as Metrics (At First) You cannot decide platforms based on vanity metrics. I am being pulled in two major directions: ambition and relaxation. One brings happiness, the other success. As a 24-year-old, I am still trying to figure this one out. A company's mission will help lay out the game plan and strategy to running the production company. With formulating the mission, one has to figure out the "Edge" or "Secret Sauce" of the company? Branding- The Story of the Company The mission is laid out now it's time to figure out what story, the company will convey to the World. The DSLR Revolution has come and gone. My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/jordankit Now the Mirrorless and Prosumer-Cinema cameras are dominating the videomaking world. It's time to put the DSLR on the shelf for good. Image Quality The Dreaded Question- "What Camera did you use to shoot that?" Everyone hates this question, but it's valid when it's coming from a cheap DSLR-user. How can you blame them? They're looking at beautiful images on YouTube in 4K! Speaking of 4K; DSLRs have put that on hold indefinitely. 4K six months wasn't the top priority, but now it is a must-have. 4K provides so many options for the image. The DSLR world has said that they're working on it but that doesn't appear to be the case. Performance DSLRs handle well in the hands; they're beefy and won't slip out. There's just one thing- this is for photographers. Filmmakers have to trick it out and spend loads of cash to make the DSLR a stable piece of equipment. Cinema prosumer cameras offer handles and grips suited for run-n-gun shooting. Battery life wasn't cut out to last very long for video mode. Photos are quick and use minimal power. 1200 shots on a single battery seems reasonable, but 90 minutes for video doesn't cut it. Purpose The DSLR was meant for photography. Video mode was an afterthought that was marketable. Period. It's an amazing feeling when a potential clients knocks on your door for their next video project. Here are some things to keep in mind: -Establish the budget or budget range early on- Some clients don't have a grasp on what actually goes into making a high produciton value video. They make think it cost X but really it cost 5X. Establish early on what their budget range is. This will help you understand what kind of project you can pull off. -Build Trust with your Client Not the snap of a finger, but when there's a mutual trust between you and your client. They trust you to make the best creative decisions and you trust them to pay you for your services. -Vet your Clients- Much the same way they are vetting you, YOU should vet them. Figure out what kind of client they are. Ask them about their previous vendors or companies that they have worked with. Are they rude? Do they pay on time? The DJI Ronin-M has to be one of the best DSLR gimbals on the market. DJI Ronin-M: http://amzn.to/2mvA7Lv It's an easy setup and the controls are very intuitive. The first setup with the Ronin-M took around 20-30 minutes which is expected with any new stabilizer. The key to balance is finding the points where the gimbal stays in one place as opposes to re-balancing upright. Similar to a Steadicam, it takes patience and finesse to find the balance. However, once you find that point, the Ronin-M takes it from there. No seriously. This gimbal is surprisingly lightweight and a full day's shot is not out of the question. Your video production company has started so now it's time to start earning revenue. My Gear- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D --- Cash flow is your company's oxygen; it keeps you in the game. 1. Build A Portfolio? First, they don't want to take the risk on your ass who has nothing to show for. You are going to need a portfolio or demo reel. Don't have one? Start filming projects as soon as possible. Shoot fake commercials, do free gigs until you have a portfolio that you can show clients. 2. Start with Family and Friends They are going to be the first people that hire you. Start with them and see if they can lead you to the next client. They will always have connections. 3. Free work, Spec work, Reduced-Rate This is the risky part of the first 100 days but it may be the thing to get a project started. It shows off your capabilities and pads your resume. ***Disclaimer: Doing FREE work can devalue your services.*** Do the free projects or cheap projects for as little time as possible. Snap, Inc. has been in the news lately about their IPO but not a lot are talking about the public release of the Snapchat Spectacles. You can now purchase them online instead of flying over to LA or NYC to get a pair. What are Spectacles? Snap Spectacles are sunglasses with a built-in camera. They record circular video that downloads to the Snapchat app. Share them on Snapchat or export them to edit them on Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro. These are a seamless way to capture and share the moments without whipping out your phone. How can you buy a RED EPIC-W camera package that costs $75,000+? Option 1) Cash money. Option 2) Borrow/Financing Options You'll need a down payment, factor in the interest rate, and calculate if you can make the monthly payments. A way to pay off that monthly payment is to rent out the gear to other filmmakers. A RED EPIC-W with the 8K sensor could easily rent for $600/day which could be your monthly payment! Having a professional cinema package could also spice up your Cinematography CV because now you are a Cinematographer/RED Camera Owner. Producers can hire just you and you bring along your gear. (The whole package, so to speak.) But what happens when you can't rent out your camera? You're basically staring at $75,000 worth of metal and plastic sitting on your desk.
