How to Deal with Last-Minute Photography Clients
Accommodate if the schedule allows If you have an opening, then I don’t see a problem with booking the gig. However, it’s I find it incredibly disrespectful that they’re calling me last minute There’s a ton of new added stress so the following is going to happen:Charge a Rush-fee Price sensitivity Cobb Value Curve Cash up front. You have no rapport, you have no trust built up. You will screw yourself if you do this wedding without 100% upfront cash. YOU WILL DO NOTHING UNTIL THAT MONEY IS CLEARED AND ON THE WAY TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT. Your time is valuableIf you’re not available, find a trusted freelancer or recommend a friend Be careful when referring to your friend. Good friends don’t send over shitty referrals. I’ve had plenty of folks send me crap referrals with a paragraph-long forewarning about how bad the client is. If they’re that bad, then please don’t send them my way Politely Decline The client is clearly going to be a handful and cause you unnecessary stress. If this is how they treat you during the production process, then how do you expect post-production will go? Staying Consistent Hurts.
I know it's painful. Some of the best advice when starting out is - Don't try to do everything at once.When choosing a way to brand and market your business, it helps to choose 1 or 2 methods and stick with it. Earlier this week, I talked about the 5 Ones. Don't try to build a following or presence on EVERY SINGLE PLATFORM.Yes, of course, have an account set up. Maybe add a piece of content or two to fill it out, but you really need to focus on 1-2 marketing methods.This is the painful part - We Creatives flutter to anything new and we try to wiggle out of anything mundane or monotonous. Posting content consistently to one platform for a long time can seem boring. But it doesn't have to be. Drilling down on one mode of attack sharpens your knowledge of the platform, and sharpens your senses on knowing what content will work on that platform. The Corporate World Have Taught Us The Wrong Lessons
Being yourself is the only way to run your business.Maybe you're like me and you started your creative career in the corporate world. Having a boss, co-workers, and projects that were handed to you. Working on a corporate team, especially if you're the new girl/guy, teaches us that fitting in is always the best policy. Getting along, agreeing with your supervisors, and smiling through the good and bad is the way to go. When we finally break free from the corporate world, we bring along those social norms. We treat our clients like they're our new supervisor, and what they say goes. Being agreeable is, again, the best policy. Drop The BaggageFollowing these corporate norms will chain your business to the Slab of Mediocrity.We have to forget what we learned in the corporate world. Your clients aren't hiring you to agree with them and to go along to get along. They are hiring you for your unique perspective and ability to cut through the bullshit and tell them what's really going on with their business.Honesty is a blunt weapon in the corporate world, but in your creative business, it's your laser cutter. A client has hired you for your expertise, not to be a quasi-employee where you whimper and bow down. Stop being afraid, to tell the truth. How Much Personality Should I Show?
As much as you feel comfortable.The right answer is your answer. Whatever you feel like sharing is the right amount.There is this pressure out there to show off your family, your house, your dog, your photos from that college party where you slammed a kegstand. It really comes from lifestyle influencers which have bled into every aspect of marketing across the board.There is this constant chase to be authentic. What gets lost in translation is they think someone else's definition of authenticity is now their definition of authentic.If you don't feel comfortable showing your audience what your kids look, what their names are, what your favorite cocktail is to make, then that is totally fine. It's completely fine.The shame should only come from you trying to share and be "authentic" according to someone else's definition of authentic.
