Rest as a Career Strategy (Ep 266)

Episode 266 - The Career-Building Power of Rest in a Burnout EconomyIn the relentless grind of today’s professional world, “hustle culture” reigns supreme. For corporate professionals, especially those navigating job searches or career transitions, this often means working tirelessly to stay relevant and competitive. Yet, despite all the energy poured into applications, networking, and interview preparation, the results often fall short. The problem? We’ve misunderstood the value of rest.As a career coach working with corporate professionals for years, I’ve seen a troubling trend. High-achieving individuals—many of them seasoned executives—are burning themselves out during what should be a time of reinvention and opportunity. Rest, the cornerstone of resilience and creativity, has become the most overlooked aspect of their strategy. And the consequences are stark: poorer decisions, missed opportunities, and, perhaps most damaging of all, the erosion of their confidence. In a labor market as competitive as today’s, where layoffs remain frequent and economic uncertainty looms, it’s time we reconsider how we approach rest—not as a retreat from ambition, but as its fuel.Read the full Blog on the WebsiteJob Hunting Made SimpleReset Your Career - Fast-Track Your Job Search in One Weekend31 Days of Action for Job SeekersFind Your Talents: Learn About Your Strengths, and Watch Your Career GrowJoin 5,000+ Readers of The Job Hunting Newsletter: Subscribe NowLear More About Renata's career coaching and coursesTimestamps to guide your listening:00:31 The Importance of Rest During Job Search01:20 Why Rest is Critical for Productivity03:31 Creating Space for Rest06:16 Mental Rest and Mindfulness Practices09:14 The Power of Journaling and Gratitude14:19 Physical Rest and Sleep Strategies19:09 Exercise and Active Rest23:38 Emotional and Spiritual Rest27:13 Digital Detox and Nature Connection31:59 Creating a Restful Environment36:03 Creative Rest and New Hobbies37:35 Nourishing Your Body for Rest38:51 Making Rest a Sustainable Practice40:15 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsLinks mentioned in this episode:Episode 262 - Navigating Year-End Job Search Anxiety: How to Stay Focused and Seize OpportunitiesEpisode 102 - How to Feel Motivated When Looking for WorkEpisode 125 - Stop Praising Hard Work: 5 Strategies to Get You Out of the “Rat-Race”<a href="https://www.thejobhuntingpodcast.com/post/escape-from-your-job-search" rel="noopener noreferrer"...

Nonprofit Leadership (Ep 265)

Nonprofit Leadership (Ep 265)

Episode 265 - The Challenges and Rewards of Transitioning from Corporate to Nonprofit LeadershipAs I reflect on my latest podcast interview with Nick Grono, CEO of The Freedom Fund, I am struck by the growing interest among corporate professionals to pivot into nonprofit leadership. It's a topic I often discuss with my clients—seasoned executives who, after years of building a career defined by financial success, now seek purpose and fulfillment. This desire for purpose has never been stronger, as we navigate an economic landscape where layoffs and corporate restructuring are leaving professionals questioning the sustainability of their paths. But making the switch from corporate to nonprofit leadership isn’t as straightforward as some might think. As Nick and I discussed how the nonprofit sector operates with different rules, mindsets, and measures of success. And for those accustomed to traditional corporate roles, understanding these differences is crucial to making a successful transition.Read the full Blog on the WebsiteJob Hunting Made SimpleReset Your Career - Fast-Track Your Job Search in One Weekend31 Days of Action for Job SeekersFind Your Talents: Learn About Your Strengths, and Watch Your Career GrowJoin 5,000+ Readers of The Job Hunting Newsletter: Subscribe NowLear More About Renata's career coaching and coursesTimestamps to guide your listening:01:07 Meet Nick Grono: A Leader Against Modern Slavery03:11 The Journey to Writing a Book04:33 Challenges in Nonprofit Leadership06:31 The Importance of Measuring Impact11:13 Collaboration in the Nonprofit Sector15:42 Funding Challenges and Opportunities19:58 Transitioning from Corporate to Nonprofit24:02 The Lifecycle of a Nonprofit CEO26:54 Navigating Nonprofit Boards27:44 Building Strong Board Relationships30:49 Challenges of Nonprofit Leadership35:39 Daily Life of a Nonprofit CEO39:25 Fundraising and Financial Stability44:39 The Role of Social Enterprises49:00 Finding Purpose in Nonprofit Work52:02 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsLinks mentioned in this episode:Nick Grono's LinkedInNick Grono's book, How to Lead NonprofitsRegister to attend Nick Grono's presentation in Melbourne and SydneyEpisode 104 - Want to Become a Board Director? - with Moana Weir (Part 1)Episode 105...

Hybrid Work: A Necessity or a Trend? (Ep 259)

The workplace has transformed dramatically in the past few years, and many corporate professionals are finding themselves wondering, What’s next? Will remote work remain viable, or are we heading back to the traditional office environment? In light of recent decisions from major companies like Amazon, which plans to bring all employees back to the office full-time by January 2025, these questions have become even more pressing. While some organizations push for a return to in-office work, there is mounting evidence suggesting that hybrid work will continue to be a key model for corporate professionals. In this blog, we’ll explore why hybrid work is likely here to stay, and how corporate professionals can thrive in this evolving landscape. For many professionals, hybrid work has been a game changer since the pandemic began in 2020. The flexibility to work from home, reduced commuting time, and better work-life balance have made remote and hybrid models highly attractive. Career Coaching vs Career Counseling: Understanding the Key Differences (Ep 257)

Career Coaching vs Career Counseling: Understanding the Key Differences (Ep 257)

Since the pandemic, corporate professionals across the globe have been reassessing their career goals, purpose, and interests. Many are no longer content with simply climbing the corporate ladder; instead, they are seeking roles that align with their values, provide fulfillment, and offer flexibility. In both the US and Australia, professionals are changing industries, pursuing career pivots, and prioritizing work-life balance more than ever before.A recent survey by McKinsey revealed that over 40% of employees are considering leaving their jobs in search of better opportunities that reflect their new priorities. Similarly, research from PwC Australia shows that a significant number of professionals—especially those in their 40s and 50s—are actively seeking career changes, with many citing the pandemic as a catalyst for reevaluating what matters most to them.As a career coach, I work with corporate professionals who are not only looking for job advancement but are also asking deeper questions about what they truly want out of their careers. In this article, I’ll explore the most pressing concerns job seekers face today and share insights I’ve gained from working with professionals navigating these transitions.Read the full Blog on the WebsiteJob Hunting Made SimpleReset Your Career - Fast-Track Your Job Search in One Weekend31 Days of Action for Job SeekersFind Your Talents: Learn About Your Strengths, and Watch Your Career GrowJoin 5,000+ Readers of The Job Hunting Newsletter: Subscribe NowLear More About Renata's career coaching and coursesTimestamps to guide your listening:01:45 Understanding Career Counseling and Coaching02:34 Personal Reflections and Goal Setting07:40 Career Coaching Explained10:55 Career Counseling Deep Dive19:47 Combining Career Counseling and Coaching27:12 Final Thoughts and EncouragementLinks mentioned in this episode:Episode 254 - Unlocking Career Success: Expert Answers to Your Top Job Search QuestionsAbout the host, Renata BernardeHello, I'm Renata Bernarde, the Host of The Job Hunting Podcast. Key Strategies to Stand Out (Ep 256)

Key Strategies to Stand Out (Ep 256)

The job market in 2024 remains complex and competitive, especially for experienced professionals. Whether you’re in the US or Australia, senior-level roles are becoming harder to land, and even seasoned executives find themselves in uncharted territory. In the US, the labor market has shown signs of slowing growth. While the unemployment rate has remained relatively low, many companies are opting for cautious hiring practices, particularly for higher-level positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, sectors such as finance and technology have seen a reduction in the number of open executive roles as organizations focus on cost-saving measures and operational efficiencies.Australia faces similar challenges. Experienced professionals are navigating a job market that is still feeling the effects of recent economic shifts. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that while job vacancies remain, many organizations are tightening budgets, particularly for senior management and leadership positions. As companies restructure or downsize, professionals with decades of experience are increasingly finding themselves in a crowded job market, vying for fewer opportunities. In this environment, many seasoned professionals are asking, “How do I stand out?” As a career coach specializing in job searching and career advancement for experienced professionals, I’ve heard this question countless times. Having coached executives, managers, and directors navigating these uncertain times, I’ve come to understand the specific challenges they face. In my latest podcast episode, I answer the most common and pressing questions from corporate professionals and offer actionable advice to help them regain control of their job search and career trajectory.Read the full Blog on the WebsiteJob Hunting Made SimpleReset Your Career - Fast-Track Your Job Search in One Weekend31 Days of Action for Job SeekersFind Your Talents: Learn About Your Strengths, and Watch Your Career GrowJoin 5,000+ Readers of The Job Hunting Newsletter: Subscribe NowLear More About Renata's career coaching and coursesTimestamps to guide your listening:01:26 Importance of Cognitive Assessments01:58 Returning to the Webinar Questions06:40 Group Coaching Insights10:06 Career Advancement Strategies14:31 Handling Overqualification Feedback17:36 Competing Against Preferred Candidates23:32 Explaining Employment Gaps28:16 Referee Fatigue28:56 The Importance of Educating Referees29:28 Nurturing Relationships with Referees30:07 Handling Early Reference Checks31:27 Requests for Proposals and Presentations31:45 Dealing with Unsuccessful Interviews32:36 The Role of NDAs in Job Applications35:20 Writing Resumes for Bots38:27 The Referral Process for Recruiters41:21 Building Trust in Interviews42:51 Managing Job Hunting Stress46:48 Balancing Job Hunting with Other Commitments50:45 Group Coaching and Final...

Winning Resumes? Keep It Simple (Ep 253)

In today’s hyper-competitive job market, your resume is your personal marketing tool. Therefore, choosing a good template is quite a challenge for many professionals. Especially due to the fact that the first "thing" looking at your resume most often is a bot, not the human eye. Most employers now rely on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to sift through countless resumes, which means the template you choose can significantly impact whether or not your application ever gets seen by human eyes. As a career coach with years of experience helping professionals apply for jobs and advance their careers, I’ve encountered countless resumes that looked great on the surface but were fundamentally flawed in terms of ATS compatibility. To investigate whether freely available resume templates are up to the task, I conducted an in-depth analysis of some of the most popular sources for free resume templates online. The results were enlightening—and in some cases, alarming.Read the full Blog on the WebsiteJob Hunting Made SimpleReset Your Career - Fast-Track Your Job Search in One Weekend31 Days of Action for Job SeekersFind Your Talents: Learn About Your Strengths, and Watch Your Career GrowJoin 5,000+ Readers of The Job Hunting Newsletter: Subscribe NowLear More About Renata's career coaching and coursesTimestamps to guide your listening:00:00 Introduction to Free Resume Templates00:54 Personal Updates and Episode Plans01:39 Understanding Recruiter Compensation02:33 Types of Recruiters and Their Motivations06:40 The Impact of Recruiter Compensation on Job Seekers09:58 LinkedIn Profiles: Common Mistakes and Best Practices12:32 Personal Insights on Goal Setting and Job Searching15:18 Analyzing Popular Resume Templates33:22 Creating Professional Banners34:43 Exploring Canva Resume Templates42:17 The Pitfalls of Reddit Advice45:25 Evaluating Indeed's Resume Templates47:02 The Harvard Resume Template52:34 Final Thoughts and Best PracticesLinks mentioned in this episode:Episode 226 - This Recruiter Wants You to Rethink Your Salary Expectation, with Kyle SamuelsEpisode 157 - Behavioral Interview Questions: Why They Dont Always Work and What to Do About It - with Lou AdlerEpisode 225 - Inside the Recruiter's Mind: Decoding the Recruitment Playbook to Land Your Next RoleMicrosoft Resumes<a href="https://www.canva.com/resumes/" rel="noopener...

Career Crisis Management (Ep 251)

Career Crisis Management (Ep 251)

Recent incidents involving leadership communication failures, such as the global IT disruption caused by CrowdStrike and the mishandling of security by the U.S. Secret Service, offer valuable lessons for corporate professionals on the importance of crisis communication. In July 2024, CrowdStrike—a leading cybersecurity firm—released a faulty software update that triggered widespread system crashes on Windows devices globally. This incident disrupted vital sectors including healthcare, finance, and transportation, leading to significant operational chaos. Despite the technical nature of the issue, CrowdStrike's leadership struggled to effectively communicate the situation, which amplified public concern and shook confidence in the company's ability to manage crises.Similarly, the U.S. Secret Service faced severe criticism following their response to a security breach in July 2024 during a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump. The mishandling of communication in the aftermath, coupled with delayed and unclear public statements, eroded trust and led to calls for leadership changes within the agency. These examples underscore the critical need for leaders to be prepared with clear, empathetic, and confident communication strategies during crises. Whether it's handling the pressure of a job interview or navigating a major organizational crisis, the ability to communicate effectively during tough times is a skill that can set you apart as a leader. This blog will explore essential strategies for mastering crisis communication, helping you advance your career and make informed decisions during critical moments.
