E132 - CO-HOST - Tiffany Bell - New Podcaster Questions - Launch, Cost, Time and Community
Tiffany is looking to take her social media interactions into the podcasting world. Her mission is to help build community and to serve others!
We talk about launching a podcast, how many episodes are required to launch a show, audio vs video podcasting for new podcasters, we talk cost and technology plus much more!
If you are looking to launch a podcast, remember, your community might include people who want to help and to support you - they can offer their time, talent or treasure, you just need to put it out to your community, what you need and how they can help you with your podcast!
Pastor Tiffany Bell is a powerful and dynamic speaker who has been changing lives with her story and compassion for over two decades. At the age of 22, pastor Tiffany had a radical conversion and encounter with Jesus Christ that would change her life forever! Since that time, she has committed her life to spreading the message of hope and God's transforming power around the world!Pastor Tiffany was raised just outside of Charleston South Carolina. As a child, she saw the hand of God protect and keep her despite being raised in the home of a backslidden pastor turned drug dealer! Surrounded by drugs and abuse, she managed to build and receive strength from a God she had not known or met. Little did she know it then, but God had big plans for her.In her early 20s Tiffany was invited to attend an Assembly of God church service. There, she decided to give God a try. With nothing to lose, she gained the world. That night, she told the Lord, “yes”. Since that night, her passion for souls has continued to grow.Shortly after that fate-filled night at the Assembly of God Church, Pastor Tiffany Bell began an intense discipleship training. Within a couple of months, God was already opening doors for her to begin to mentor others. She began teaching addiction recovery classes using the Teen Challenge curriculum. Faithful to the call, she would soon become actively involved as a youth pastor. A few years later, God opened up an opportunity to plant a church where she would be co-pastor. Through community outreach and discipleship she was able to see a church plant grow from nothing to over 60 strong before God launched her into her next season.Today, Pastor Tiffany Bell and her husband Apostle Dr. Howard Bell spearhead an international ministry called, “Yielded Life”. This ministry spans the globe through social media, television and live events. Together they spread the message of how Yielding to God, through the posture of love, will Awaken Identity, Activate Purpose and Ignite Destiny!

EPISODE 128 - CO-HOST - Tonya Wollum - Audio vs Video, YouTube, Tools We Use, Stats and Being Everywhere
The Water Prairie Chronicles is the result of the experiences we’ve been through as our children have grown up with different types of disabilities. We’ve lived in several states during the years when they were younger, and we know firsthand how difficult it is to get connected with the resources you need when you’re trying to parent a child with disabilities.
No matter if your child has a medical condition, a physical challenge, or an invisible disability, we want the Water Prairie Chronicles podcast and website to be a resource you can come to for support and encouragement. We are creating video podcasts of interviews with individuals who have grown up with a disability to show parents the possible path their child might follow. These interviews will include information about how the individual accommodated their unique needs during school and advice they want to pass on to parents and children who have similar life challenges.
We’ll also include interviews with organizations and professionals who may be good resources for the families the Water Prairie Chronicles is trying to serve.

E127 - Listener Feedback Question - What is Upspeak and Vocal Fry and Why We Should Talk About It
EPISODE 127 - Listener Feedback Question - What is Upspeak and Vocal Fry and Why We Should Talk About It
What is vocal fry?
Vocal fry is the lowest register (tone) of your voice characterized by its deep, creaky, breathy sound.
When you speak, your vocal cords naturally close to create vibrations as air passes between them. Like a piano or guitar string, these vibrations produce sound (your voice). When you breathe, your vocal cords are relaxed and open to let air pass through freely, which doesn’t produce any sound.
When you use vocal fry, you relax your vocal cords but do not increase the amount of air you’re pushing past your vocal cords, which produces slower vibrations and ultimately results in the lower creaky sound.
Whether you use it or not, vocal fry is a pattern of voice use that does not cause harm to your voice. However, if you’re not satisfied with your voice, a speech-language pathologist can help improve its quality. These methods train you to produce a stronger, more powerful voice.
https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/is-vocal-fry-ruining-my-voice
What Is Upspeak?
Upspeak, also known as uptalk or high rising terminal (HRT), is a linguistic occurrence in which a speaker uses a rising inflection at the end of a declarative sentence. This rising intonation at the end of the sentence makes a statement sound like a question. In 1993, journalist James Gorman established the term “upspeak” in a New York Times article. In pop culture, upspeak is known as “valley girl speak,” a social class stereotype popularized in the ‘80s as a riff on the dialect of upper-middle-class young women from the valleys of Southern California.
Overusing upspeak in your speech becomes monotonous for listeners and may indicate a lack of confidence, as every statement becomes a question. While linguists have derided the use of uptalk, some high-profile figures have embraced it.

E126 - Listener Question - Should I Start a Live Podcast, A Video Podcast or and Audio Only Show
E126 - Listener Question - Should I Start a Live Podcast, A Video Podcast or and Audio Only Show
Chris left a message about I am thinking of starting a podcast. Chris was wondering what the best path is to start on.
Should he start an audio only podcast, a video podcast or a live show?
Chris asked if I have ever considered doing a live podcast?
In this episode we look at where the easiest place is to start. As in all things in life, it depends! If you are gifted with video, then a video podcast makes sense based on what you already know - if you are a live gamer, than a live podcast might be great - I, unfortunately am neither of those! So I choose audio only to start. A few reasons why...
Audio is widely available to the majority of consumers without hurdles to consume your podcast - you reach is wider and evergreen. Your hosting site might charge you by file size per episode - audio file sizes are lower than video thus saving you money.
Video and Live Podcasting include extras - cameras, lights, streaming software, strong internet connection, money etc. If you are new and have very little budget this might makes thing difficult for you starting out.
Live podcasting to me, based on the limited live podcasts that I have attended (there in lies one big problem - I am busy when they go live) tends to lean toward podcasters that seem bored with the audio only podcasts that they have been creating for a long time. It is the new shiny thing and when they host a live podcast they seem distracted, unfocused, unedited and all over the place leaving us audio only listeners in the dark as to what is going on.
"Look at this mic" "Check out this image" "Charlie in the chat just made a great comment" (but we don't hear Charlie's comment, ever)
Podcasting from day one was built on anyone can speak to everyone, anytime, anywhere and how the audience wants to listen. Video and live have limited ways to hear/see the podcast - so there in lies the problem that I have with ignoring the audio only podcast listeners - the moment we purposefully alienate potential listeners becomes the opposite of what podcasting was designed to do.
Audio is where I would start based on my audience, my skill level and my current financial situation - be realistic and inclusive to all!
... and for all things podcasting, edit your live and video podcasts for those listening later on an audio platform - don't be a lazy podcaster - we see you!

E122 - Podcast Tips for Being a Better Guest on Your Next Podcast - Learn From The Experiences of Others
EPISODE 122 - Podcast Tips for Being a Better Guest on Your Next Podcast - Learn From The Experiences of Others
Being is guest on podcasts is a great way to strut your stuff, make valuable connections and share your message - here are some things to consider when reaching out to podcasts that you want to guest on...
- unfortunately not all podcast hosts will respond in a timely manner (or at all)
- have ONE call to action not 25! A website is $12 a year and you can build your website on Canva for free - so a linktree is not the best place to send people - a website is your spot on the internet that you control - have one place to send listeners and then populate your site with all the other links to where you are on social media
- consider having a gift or free offer that isn't available to EVERYONE, just the listeners - you can track when listeners click through to your offer and it gives listeners a special bonus just for them!
- Question - do I have to listen to a podcast before I guest on the show? Nope! Should you, Yes! Why? You will pick up on the tone, energy and vibe of the show which can be your super power as a guest when it is your turn!
- When communicating with the host avoid canned copy/paste communications - personalize your pitches so that your email stands out in a crowded email inbox!
- When pitching yourself to a podcast host - pitch content ideas for the show and how you would be a great guest to discuss the content that you suggested - not just your book.
- During the podcast - answer the question that is asked of you and keep your answer short and valuable - let the host pull out further details about your answer instead of going on and on for 20 minutes for one simple question
- have good tech if you want to be a frequent guest - a $50 usb mic and a pair of wired headphones will do wonders when you show up to record your podcast interview - be sure to record from a quiet spot with no distractions (turn off your phone!)
- Show up for your guest spot as if you were about to walk onto the biggest stage of your life in front of thousands of people! This is a big opportunity, treat it as such.
- Leverage other guests from the podcast you are guesting on - there maybe other guests that you can connect with now that you have both been on the same show - you never know where that might lead!
- when pitching a podcast to be on as a guest - remember the podcast is not about you, it is about the audience, always!
- Ask yourself - why am I guesting and what is the result that I am hoping for by being a guest - if you don't know the answer to that question - figure that out before your next pitch!
- Thank your host before, during and after each opportunity
- and lastly, be prepared - always

E121 - Podcast Host Tips For Interview Based Podcasts - Learn From The Experiences of Others
EPISODE 121 - Podcast Host Tips For Interview Based Podcasts - Learn From The Experiences of Others
Some suggestions for podcast hosts with guests! Compiled from some of my podcast buddies about interview guests on your podcast.
- be sure to comment on your guests when they post on be a guest sites confirming to others how great your former guest is - your support as your guest looks for more podcasts to be on is super helpful
- remember - you do not have to accept EVERY guest - be selective
- Leverage pre/post show planning for each of your guest
- pre-interview/planning sessions can be impactful and helpful to new podcast guests with limited experience
- make your guest comfortable on your show
- treat people well and the results will follow
- server your guests
- communicate with guest - give guests a brief synopsis of your show, the reason that they would be a good fit, and the benefit your guest will receive by being on your show
- if a guest mentions a mentor, resource or helpful tool - reach out to that suggested resource and invite them on your show as well if it serves your audience
- keep a running track sheet on guests - track all the processes of your show and keep track of guests that have been great or not so great
- big take away - Podcasting is about THEM not YOU

Should I have a One Sheet for My Podcast as the Host - The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips
Should I have a One Sheet for My Podcast as the Host - The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips
What is a Podcast One-Sheet?
Podcast one-sheets tell a podcast host why they should choose you as a guest and which topics you can eloquently speak about. You should view it as your podcast resume!
Unsurprisingly, a one-sheet is one piece of paper filled with brief information that helps steer conversations during a podcast. While these sheets will cover quite a bit of information, one-sheets shouldn’t seem crowded. The layout of compelling one-sheets flows seamlessly; podcast hosts and guests should have the ability to skim the sheet to find the subtopic they’re looking for. Here are the main components of a podcast one-sheet:
Headshot
Bio
Suggested interview topics
Suggested questions
Social media/contact information
Appearances on other podcasts (if applicable)
Why Are One-Sheets Important?
If you’re a podcast host, would you want to invite a guest onto your show without knowing about them? You would be rolling the dice. On the flip side, podcast guests might not appreciate recording a podcast if the host had little to no information about them. It might not work well if a real estate agent randomly appears on a podcast without the host having any background information.
One-sheets have become an industry norm because they help keep the podcast space organized and help podcast hosts choose the right guests to bring onto their show.
Simply put: podcast hosts need one-sheets to find the right people to contribute to their show’s value. If you’re interested in being a guest on a podcast, you should use a one-sheet to market yourself.
How Do You Design a One-Sheet?
There are six essential components in a one-sheet:
The headshot section
The bio section
The suggested questions section
The suggested topic question
The podcast appearances section

YouTube Podcast News - Coming soon additional analytics, improved discovery and search for podcasts - The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips
YouTube will fully support ingestion of RSS feeds for podcasts by the end of the year, it was announced at Podcast Movement by the Product Lead Podcasting at Google, Steve McLendon, speaking to Ausha’s Jennifer Han. He also made the first public acknowledgement of the ongoing beta testing that we reported on in May. (It ingests RSS audio feeds and turns them into YouTube-hosted video, like CNN One Thing which we understand is using it.)
Within the YouTube Music app, podcasts are currently available in the US, Canada and Latin America, and are on track to complete a global rollout by the end of the year, including a podcast section on the website. The company is also planning additional analytics, and improved discovery and search for podcasts, especially for users who have engaged with podcast content.
Podnews has also learnt that YouTube Music updates to expect relatively soon are show-level auto-downloads; and you’ll also soon be able to add any RSS feed to your YouTube Music app - even private RSS feeds - in countries where podcasts on YouTube Music are supported.
McLendon stressed to creators that for best results you should mark your show (“playlist”) as a podcast in YouTube Studio, which unlocks additional places where your show will be promoted.

A Question From Mark About His Proposed Podcast Show Name and Some Thoughts For You When Naming Your Show - The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips
A Question From Mark About His Proposed Podcast Show Name and Some Thoughts For You When Naming Your Show - The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips
Mark left a question for the show - his new podcast idea is a travel and local focused show the N B Traveler - thanks Mark for leaving your question - we will talk about Mark's podcast show name and talk through some considerations for you when determining the name for your show!
When choosing a title, think of a dynamic name that can expand to fit your wildest dreams. The possibilities of audio creation are always expanding, and you never know how your personal brand might grow. Relying on the word “podcast” from the get-go might leave you feeling boxed in down the road.
In short, here are some guidelines from fellow podcasters around picking a great podcast name:
Aim for 4 words or less.
Choose a name that aligns with your content.
Keep it succinct and intriguing.
Try to avoid the words “The” and “Podcast.”
Avoid special characters, misspellings, abbreviations, and punctuation.
Your name should be easy to spell and pronounce.
Make sure it’s not already taken.
Gather some outside opinions.
Think about how your show might evolve over time.
Choose a name you like saying out loud.
Picking a podcast name might feel difficult, but don’t let it prevent you from sharing your voice. Sometimes a show needs to exist in the world before it can be given a title. If you find yourself feeling stuck, the best thing to do is start creating. Record some mock episodes or soft-launch with a placeholder name. There’s always room for adjustment later on.
At the end of the day, listeners are tuning in for you and your content—not your podcast title. If you make great episodes that keep people engaged, your podcast name will fall into place.

E117 - Dave versus A.I. - Putting the Humanity back into Podcast Editing
I had the opportunity to be a guest on a podcast for Dads - it was great, awesome host, a great episode - truly grateful for the opportunity to share my Dad Story! Be a guest, it is a great way to add value to another show, to support a fellow podcaster and potentially grow your own show at the same time!
When the episode released I noticed that the podcast was edited by a popular A.I. Editing tool that podcasters have fallen in love with - but I felt, when listening back to the interview that the humanity was removed in the edit - so I have a warning for you as a podcaster to use caution when using an A.I. Tool or an editor for your show - don't strip every last second of pauses, cadence and the natural "gallop" that happens when we talk.
Here is a comparison of the interview as it went out and my edits to put the humanity back into the same clip. You judge for yourself what works for you, how do you feel when you hear the two clips. For me the first clip made me feel anxious, like a shot clock in basketball, there felt like an imaginary countdown clock clicking away and that I was trying to get all my words in before a cutoff point...
If you need help with your editing I am accepting new podcasts for a limited time - if I can help you edit your show, and you want a human to do your edits, maybe I can help!

E114 - CO-HOST - Christa Joy Spaeth - Working With A Podcast Coach, Riverside, Building Community
EPISODE 114 - CO-HOST - Christa Joy Spaeth - Working With A Podcast Coach, Riverside, Building Community
Christa Joy Spaeth is the founder of Christa Joy Ministries. It was in 2022 when Minnesota-based author Christa received a compelling message from God. In a prayer cabin called “Whisper,” He prompted her to write a seven-week devotional.
Since then, Christa’s eyes, heart, and ears were opened to more whispers, so that she may start fulfilling her new purpose of helping the hurting and share the love of Christ.
Christa is a blessed wife, mother of two, and a successful businesswoman. She is a woman ignited with a burning passion to walk in the rhythm of God’s plan, each day. So much so that in 2022, she took a bold step, bidding goodbye to her long-standing career as a Registered Dietitian at a high-profile food manufacturing company. It wasn’t an easy step, but it was a step of faith, one that led her closer to the purpose God had for her: encouraging others through Christ.
Today, Christa owns and operates Christa Joy Ministries where she publishes her own books, hosts a podcast, and writes daily encouragements on her social media. In addition, she does guest blog posts for various social media accounts.

E113 - The Chevy Nova - Why Picking a Great Podcast Name Matters and Ten Things To Consider When Naming Your Show
E113 - The Chevy Nova - Why Picking a Great Podcast Name Matters and Ten Things To Consider When Naming Your Show
the story of the Chevy Nova “no go” is a myth, an urban legend. It never actually happened. Like many urban legends, the Chevy “no go” story was repeated so many times that people believed it to be true. Also, similar to other urban legends, the Chevy “no go” story has a small element of truth, for “no va” does mean “no go.”
Contrary to popular belief, though, the Chevy Nova sold well in Latin America. In Venezuela, the Nova actually exceeded sales projections from Chevrolet.
If you can speak Spanish, you likely understand why the Chevy Nova “no go” story is a myth. For one, in Spanish, nova and no va don’t sound the same, and most people would not confuse them. It would be like saying “carpet” and “car pet.” They sound different and have different meanings. Also, no va would be a highly unusual way to describe a car that can’t drive or function.
Key Considerations When Selecting a Name for Your Podcast:
Relevance: Choose a name that directly reflects the content and theme of your podcast. It should give listeners a clear idea of what your show is about.
Memorability: Aim for a name that is catchy, easy to remember, and stands out among other podcasts. Avoid overly complicated or lengthy names.
SEO-Friendly: Opt for a name that incorporates relevant keywords or phrases related to your podcast's topic. This can help improve your podcast's visibility in search results.
Uniqueness: Ensure your podcast name is distinct and not already used by another popular podcast to avoid confusion and trademark issues.
Audience Appeal: Consider your target audience and the tone of your podcast. Choose a name that resonates with your intended listeners and reflects the podcast's personality.
Versatility: Select a name that allows for potential growth and expansion of your podcast's topics or content without feeling limited.
Domain Availability: Check if the corresponding domain name is available for your podcast website, as it's essential for branding and online presence.
Social Media Handles: Ensure that the podcast name is available as a handle on major social media platforms to maintain consistency across channels.
Avoid Trends: While trendy names might seem appealing initially, they can quickly become outdated. Opt for a timeless name that will age well.
Test and Feedback: Before finalizing your podcast name, test it with friends, family, or potential listeners to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments.
Summary Statement:
Selecting the right podcast name is a critical step in creating a successful show. A relevant, memorable, and SEO-friendly name that resonates with your target audience will set the tone for your podcast's identity and impact its overall visibility and growth. Take the time to choose wisely and consider feedback to ensure your podcast name represents your content and stands out in a competitive podcasting landscape.

E112 - CO-HOST - Debbie Weiss - Host of Maybe I Can - Co-Hosting, Being Unique and Podcasting Courses
E112 - Debbie Weiss - Host of Maybe I Can - Co-Hosting, Being Unique and Podcasting Courses
Hello, I'm Debbie...
For most of my life, my set of beliefs was fairly consistent with my upbringing and life experience. Certainly, all of us are shaped by the people, places, and circumstances of our lives. I was not one to ever question those beliefs. I just assumed they were correct and to be quite honest, I never really gave it any thought.
My life changed forever the day after I graduated from high school when my Dad had a massive stroke. He survived and I was his primary caregiver for the next 30 years. This was the beginning of me taking care of everyone else at the expense of myself.
I was and still am a "fixer" and a "problem solver". I have a strong desire to be the one to help, which is admirable (if I do say so myself 😋), however, I sacrificed my own well-being in the process.
My belief was "it is what it is". It's not like I have a choice.
My life has always been about doing everything for everyone else without giving much consideration to my own needs and wants. I would hear what other people were doing and often be jealous and think, "that must be nice, but I can't do that". Anyone who offered a suggestion, I always had a reason why "I can't do it". Other people can, but I can't.
Until I turned 50 and realized that this is it. This is my one and only life and I don't want to look back years from now with regret for the things I haven't done.Maybe I can try something new.
Maybe I can put myself first.
Maybe I can take control of my future.
Maybe I can live the life of my dreams.
After all, other people do it, so why not me?
I'm done with my excuses and ready to take back my life and I know exactly how I'm going to do it.

Envision your ideal future with a professional editor in three years. Detail the production process, roles, and benefits.

List any non-negotiables, preferences, and decision criteria you have for selecting an editor.

E109 - The Limitations of an Explicit Podcast - Advantages and Disadvantages of being explicit on your podcast
Episode 109 - The Limitations of an Explicit Podcast - Advantages and Disadvantages of being explicit on your podcast
Setting Up Your Podcast: Understanding the Limits of an 'Explicit' Podcast
When starting your podcast, it's essential to know the limitations that come with producing explicit content. Here's a simple guide to help you make informed decisions:
1. Censor Yourself or Be Labeled 'Explicit'
You have the freedom to create a podcast with strong language, explicit discussions about sex, or graphic content. However, major podcast directories, like Apple Podcasts, prioritize child safety. If your content is explicit but not labeled as such, they may take action against your podcast. To avoid this, clearly mark your podcast as explicit when necessary.
2. Consider Your Audience Reach
Creating an explicit podcast may limit your potential audience. Some countries, numbering up to 17, ban explicit podcasts, impacting hundreds of millions of potential listeners. Before going explicit, think about whether your content will attract more listeners than it might deter.
3. Impact on Advertising Revenue
Certain advertisers avoid supporting explicit shows. So, if your podcast contains explicit material, it could limit your opportunities for advertising revenue. Consider whether the explicit label might affect your chances of attracting advertisers.
4. Popularity and Top Podcasts
Only a small percentage of the most popular podcasts are explicit. If your goal is to be among the top podcasts, you might want to look at what the majority of successful shows are doing. Decide if you want to follow the path of the 85% non-explicit shows or the remaining 15% explicit ones. Carefully consider both options before making your choice.
Remember, it's essential to know the potential consequences of producing an explicit podcast. Make informed decisions that align with your podcasting goals and target audience. By understanding the limitations, you can set up your podcast for success and avoid unnecessary setbacks. Happy podcasting!

E108 - Confidence versus Ego in Podcasting - is there room for either as a Podcaster
E108 - Confidence versus Ego in Podcasting - is there room for either as a Podcaster
When it comes to podcasters, confidence plays a crucial role. It's important to have confidence and approach things with the mindset that success is attainable. Assuming the sale and expecting opportunities are valid strategies to adopt. However, it's also worth noting that you mentioned not expecting things or opportunities. So, how can we navigate this dilemma between being confident and believing in ourselves versus refraining from those expectations?
Ultimately, confidence is key, but it shouldn't stem from ego. Rather, it should come from acknowledging the hard work and preparation invested in the podcasting journey. Speaking with confidence arises from knowing the subject matter thoroughly and being able to discuss it intelligently. Whether the topic of your podcast is, confidence comes from personal experience, thorough research, and the ability to substantiate one's arguments.
Confidence is critical for progress. It's essential to assume success and envision yourself landing speaking engagements or being a guest on your dream podcast. This kind of confidence propels you forward. However, it's important to differentiate between confidence and ego. Ego arises when you begin to expect certain outcomes and results, and when they don't materialize, you blame external factors.
To address this, it's necessary to examine your thinking. Ask yourself if you have done the necessary groundwork, laid the foundation, and paid your dues. Reflect on whether you have truly put in the effort. While the ego might still sting, it should not dictate your actions. Instead, use it as an opportunity for self-reflection. Consider what you could have done better and how you can improve.
If your ego is causing distress, look inward for answers. Avoid blaming others or feeling entitled to opportunities. Instead, focus on personal growth and self-improvement. Take a moment to evaluate yourself honestly by standing in front of a mirror and asking, "What could I have done differently to ensure a positive outcome?" Remember, the key lies within your own actions and approach.
By distinguishing confidence from ego and maintaining a healthy self-awareness, you can overcome obstacles, learn from experiences, and continue progressing in your podcasting endeavors.

E106 - How to understand podcast stats - Your Listening Habits Can Shed Some Light on This
E106 - How to understand podcast stats - Your Listening Habits Can Shed Some Light on This
How to understand podcast stats
It’s always nice to look at the numbers to see how your podcast is doing. But, podcast statistics can be confusing and complex.
Here are some details about how the different figures work, and how to read them.
Let’s get this out of the way first.
A download is just a download of an episode.
A stream doesn’t exist in podcasting.
A listen, or a play, is when we know a human being has pressed the play button.
Total audience numbers cannot be accurately worked out from downloads.
In podcast analytics, no audio ever “streams”: the audio is always downloaded. In this article, we use the word “stream” to convey the action of pressing play on a podcast you’ve not downloaded yet. To a podcast hosting company, that looks the same as a download: because it technically is.
Audio can be automatically downloaded to your phone, in case you want to hear it later. Or, audio can be downloaded when a listener wants to hear it - a “user-initiated download”. Your podcast hosting company doesn’t know if it’s an automatic download or a user-initiated download. It just knows it’s a download.
No podcast hosting company knows whether a piece of audio has ever been listened-to (a “listen” or a “play”). It can only ever know it’s been downloaded. (Podcast apps do know: but most don’t share that data).
And, of course, if an episode has had 2,000 downloads, that doesn’t mean it has 2,000 listeners. Automated downloads mean a podcast may be downloaded, but never listened-to. Or it might have been downloaded twice by someone.
13% of podcast downloads are never listened to.

Question from Jen Mac - Thoughts on Niching Down, Narrowing Your Focus and How to do this - The Daily Dave
Question from Jen Mac - Thoughts on Niching Down, Narrowing Your Focus and How to do this - The Daily Dave
Thanks Jen Mac for your question! Appreciate your contribution to the podcast! Please be sure to tell us about your show so that we can tell our audience about your podcast as well!
What does ‘niching down’ mean?
Niching down means identifying a smaller segment of your audience to target, so you can deliver a more specific and tailored offering that speaks to them directly, as opposed to a general offer that reaches a larger audience.
When approaching the topic of niching down, many podcasters worry that by alienating a large group of listeners. But actually, the opposite is true – instead of just using a blanket approach to a large group of listeners, when you determine your niche, you increase your engagement with your community.
Instead of trying to solve everything for everyone, niching down enables businesses to focus on the content that their listeners really need. It also offers the opportunity to really hone your expertise in a specific area and become the go to podcast for your niche, which can benefit your community in the long term.

Leverage Word of Mouth Advertising for Your Podcast by Guesting and How to be a Great Guest - The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips
Back with another Daily Dave!
Word of mouth is directly responsible for 19 percent of all purchases, and influences as much as 90 percent.
Every human on Earth relies on word of mouth to make buying decisions.
Yet even today, fewer than one percent of companies have an actual strategy for generating these crucial customer conversations.
The key to activating customer chatter is the realization that same is lame.
Nobody says "Let me tell you about this perfectly adequate experience I had last night."
The strategic, operational differentiator is what gives customers something to tell a story about.
Podcasters must dare to be different and exceed expectations in one or more palpable ways.
That's when word of mouth becomes involuntary: The customers of these businesses simply must tell someone else.
Let your podcast be the topic of discussion when you are not even in the room! Get the power of Word of Mouth Marketing working for you to grow your show!

E104 - Show Me The Money - How to Make Money with very few listeners
E104 - Show Me The Money - How to Make Money with very few listeners
Podcasting has become immensely popular in the last decade, and with podcast listeners being the fastest growing media audience, you know there’s a ton of potential fans for your show.
But even if you have a great idea for a new podcast and a knack for building engaged, online audiences—how do you make money podcasting?
Streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts pay out for streams, but the payout tends to be very low. Podcast sponsorships are one way, but for new podcasts, the likelihood of finding a high-paying sponsorship is slim unless you’re already a well-established figure.
Traditional sponsorships tend to be out of reach for new podcasters because businesses are less willing to risk investing in a podcast without an established audience.
So is it even possible for new podcasts to make money? The answer is yes.
By setting up a few automated revenue streams, new podcasters can accrue passive income that grows alongside their audience, giving them time back to focus on podcasting.
Affiliate marketing is a performance-based form of marketing where a business offers rewards to affiliates who are able to successfully bring customers to them. Affiliate marketing is a great way for any creator to monetize their content.
In affiliate programs, businesses only payout after customers complete an agreed-upon action. Usually this action is making a purchase, but some affiliate programs may payout for email signups, page clicks, downloads, or content engagement.
Best affiliate programs for podcasters
Amazon Associates. Amazon’s affiliate program is one of the largest in the world. With millions of unique products and retailers, it’s easier to find products that are relevant to your audience.
Skillshare Affiliates. Skillshare is a learning community with thousands of online courses and videos covering a wide variety of topics. Skillshare’s affiliate program allows you to direct audience members to any online course, making it easy to find one that’s specific to your target market.
Sell custom merchandise to fans
Give your fans the opportunity to show their support for your podcast by selling custom merchandise like t-shirts, stickers, posters, mugs, tote bags, journals, and more.
Perhaps the easiest way to run a merch store is by using a print-on-demand distribution model. This is where a third-party prints and ships products on your behalf, at the point of purchase. That means there’s no overhead costs, no time wasted on shipping, no need to store inventory, and lower financial risk.
It might take a little time to create an online store and add products, but once finished, the process of running your store can be almost fully automated.
Although some of these platforms offer monetization options, it’s a good idea to include an additional tool to collect tips. Here are the most common tip-collection tools used by podcasters:
Venmo
Cash App
Buy Me a Coffee
Ko-fi
The great thing about these tipping tools is that they don’t need to be exclusively housed on your livestreams. Add a tip URL to your social media pages, web pages, and show notes to make it easy for fans to show their support by tipping.
Write and self-publish a book for your fans
Like authors, podcast hosts are typically viewed as being a voice of authority on a particular subject, making the transition from podcast host to writer almost seamless. Perhaps that’s why so many popular podcasts have been spun off into books written by their creators.
Podcasters have a ton of advantage when it comes to selling books online:

Goodbye to Podpage - The Free Plan is Over, What Now, PodcastForFree.com will show you the way
Goodbye to Podpage - The Free Plan is Over, What Now, PodcastForFree.com will show you the way
So, a resource that I once promoted as a great free option is no longer free as of August 1 2023 - so time to pivot away from Podpage. For those of you that have followed my advice in the past around using Podpage, I wanted to give you my alternative going forward.
I am setting up PodcastForFree.com which will give you a list of the free tools that you can use as a podcaster to start your show! From hosting, to websites, to tools like Pod.link (my Podpage replacement suggestion) to free editing via Audacity - you do not need to pay for tools to start a podcast - you can do this for free and I want to help you with the tools that I use everyday to create my shows!
Why is this changing?
Podpage’s free plan allowed podcasters to create publicly accessible podcast websites so they could try our service. Unfortunately, a lot of non-podcasters abused it and posted illegal or stolen content on the free sites.
The good news is that a very small percentage of podcasters use the free plan as their official podcast website. Most upgrade to the Basic or Pro plan, so this change won’t impact too many legitimate websites.
However, I know there are some of you who rely on Podpage Free for your official site, and I’m very sorry about this change. To make it easier, we are offering discounts on upgrading before August 1.
How do I upgrade and keep my site?
If you’d like to continue your service with Podpage, go to https://podpage.com/upgrade/. There are currently two plans available, and here’s how to save money on each:
Basic: Use coupon FREEUP10 to save $10 ($10 off your first month or first year)
Pro: Use coupon FREEUP20 to save $20 on Pro ($20 off your first month or first year)
These coupons are only valid until August 1, 2023.
What happens if I don’t upgrade?
All your data will still be safe and accessible through the Podpage dashboard, but your website will “Expire”, which means anyone who visits it will see an “Expired” screen. At any point, you can upgrade and turn it back on.

E103 - Five tips for creating artwork for your podcast episodes - The Podcast Owner's Manual Mini Series
E103 - Five tips for creating artwork for your podcast episodes - The Podcast Owner's Manual Mini Series
Here are a few tips for creating artwork for your podcast episodes:
Choose a consistent theme: It's important to have a consistent theme for your podcast artwork so that it is easily recognizable to your audience. This could include a consistent color scheme, font, or style.
Make it visually appealing: Your podcast artwork should be visually appealing and eye-catching to help it stand out in a crowded marketplace. Use high-quality images and graphics and be mindful of how it will look at different sizes and resolutions.
Keep it simple: It's generally best to keep your podcast artwork simple and uncluttered. Too much text or too many images can make it difficult to read or understand.
Use the right dimensions: Make sure that your artwork is the correct dimensions for the platform you are using. Different platforms have different requirements for artwork size, so be sure to check the guidelines before creating your artwork.
Use high-quality images: Using high-quality images in your artwork will help it look professional and polished. Avoid using low-resolution or pixelated images as they will not look good when displayed at larger sizes.
Overall, it's important to create artwork that is visually appealing, consistent with your brand, and meets the requirements of the platform you are using.

Tailored Content: Each social media platform has its own culture and user expectations. Adopting a new platform gives you an opportunity to create content specifically tailored to that platform's audience.
Disadvantages of Adopting a New Social Media Platform:
Limited User Base: New social media platforms may have a smaller user base compared to established platforms, which can limit your reach initially.
Uncertain Future: The success and longevity of a new platform are uncertain. It's possible that the platform may not gain traction or could be shut down in the future, resulting in wasted time and effort.
Divided Audience: Managing multiple social media platforms can be time-consuming and may result in a divided audience that follows you on different platforms, making it challenging to maintain consistent engagement.
Learning Curve: Adopting a new platform requires time and effort to understand its features, user interface, and best practices, which can be a challenge if you're already managing other social media accounts.
While adopting a new social media platform like Threads can offer advantages such as increased reach, early adopter advantage, unique features, and tailored content, there are also potential disadvantages such as a limited user base, an uncertain future, a divided audience, and a learning curve. As with any decision to adopt a new platform, it's important to weigh the benefits against the challenges and consider how it aligns with your overall social media strategy and goals.

E96 - Battling the Fear of Failing At Our First Attempt As Podcasters
E96 - Battling the Fear of Failing At Our First Attempt As Podcasters
Define Failure:
Failure can be subjective and has different interpretations for each person. Generally, it refers to not meeting a desired outcome or falling short of expectations. In the context of podcasting, failure could mean not achieving the expected listener numbers, lacking engagement, receiving negative feedback, or discontinuing the podcast prematurely.
Examples of Failure:
a) Low listener numbers
b) Lack of engagement
c) Premature discontinuation
To combat the fear of failing at the first attempt, podcasters can take the following steps:
Set realistic expectations and understand that success may take time.
Focus on continuous learning and improvement rather than striving for perfection.
Seek feedback from listeners and use it constructively to refine the podcast.
Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow podcasters who can provide guidance and encouragement.
In summary, failure in podcasting can be defined as not meeting desired outcomes, such as low listener numbers, lack of engagement, or discontinuation. The fear of failure often revolves around the fear of not succeeding with the first attempt. However, embracing failure as a learning opportunity, realizing that many successful podcasters experienced setbacks, and focusing on growth and iteration can help overcome this fear and pave the way for long-term podcasting success.
