Dr. Hess is an associate director in the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) Division of Animal and Public Health and as AVMA’s Disaster Coordinator. He provides technical and scientific expertise to the Committee on Environmental Issues (CEI) , the Aquatic Veterinary Medicine Committee (AqVMC), the Council on Veterinary Service (CoVS), and the Committee on Disaster and Emergency Issues (CDEI).
Dr. Hess graduated from Colorado State University in 1989. He worked in small animal practice with an emphasis on birds and other exotic animals until 2004 when he began working for the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) where he served as a field veterinarian, assistant state veterinarian and 18 months as acting state veterinarian. He began working at the AVMA in 2016.
Dr. Hess became involved early in his career with organized veterinary medicine and was elected president of the Utah Veterinary Medical Association (UVMA) in 2000. Dr. Hess has led several state and national organizations including serving as president of the National Alliance of Animal and Agricultural Emergency Programs (NASAAEP). Dr. Hess was voted Veterinarian of the Year in 2014 by the UVMA. He was the recipient of the NASAAEP Service Award in 2017 and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) Paws Up Award in 2018. He is married to his high school sweetheart (Lori), and together they have 5 children and 14 grandchildren.
Dr. Hess has enjoyed the companionship of horses, dogs, various birds, and marine fish. He enjoys fishing, rowing/kayaking, and motorcycles and has completed a motorcycle trip from his home state of Utah to Alaska and back with his 87-year-old father in tow.

Professor Caroline Mansfield is a registered specialist in small animal medicine and is recognized as an international leader in veterinary internal medicine, as evidenced by frequent invitations to present at international conferences, requests to provide expert opinions and current and previous roles in the profession. She is a past Board member and President of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and has been a member of the Board of Examiners for the National Veterinary Examination. Her expertise is recognized outside of the sphere of clinical veterinary medicine by participating in the peer review process for Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher awards (DECRA) and Discovery projects from 2015 to present. She is currently Chief Editor for the Australian Veterinary Practitioner, on the Editorial Board for Animals, a member of the Purina Institute advisory group and received the 2019 Award for Scientific Excellence from the Australian Small Animal Veterinarians. She is currently an honorary research professorial fellow at the University of Queensland and clinician at James Cook University, located in tropical far north Queensland. Her research is focused on the interaction of the gut microbiome in the health and disease of dogs and cats, and the role diet and environment play in this. She also researches in areas of clinical gastroenterology that can result in tangible improvement in the health and welfare of our pets. She has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers plus multiple textbook chapters and conference presentations. To date, she has supervised over 30 post-graduate students and clinical residents to successful completion.

Dr. Kristin MacDonald earned her doctorate of veterinary medicine in 1998 from Auburn University, and then completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Michigan State University in 1999. She finished a residency in veterinary cardiology at University of California, Davis in 2001 and became a board certified veterinary cardiologist in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2002. She continued her education by earning a PhD at UC Davis Comparative Pathology graduate group in September 2005 on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Maine Coon cats, and the effects of ACE inhibitors. Dr. MacDonald taught on faculty at UC Davis for a year, and then became the clinical cardiologist at the VCA Animal Care Center of Sonoma County in Rohnert Park, CA, where she continues to have a busy cardiology practice. She has been an active author of book chapters for highly respected textbooks, served as section editor for Handbook of Small Animal Practice, published a multitude of original research papers, and is coauthor of The Textbook of Feline Cardiology, the only text of its kind available. Dr. MacDonald has participated in clinical trials involving treatment of canine congestive heart failure, and enjoys being the lecturer for the VCA Cardiology Series in the United States. Living in Sonoma County, she enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, skiing, and being mom of two daughters, two Tonkinese cats and a Labrador Retriever.

Dr. Natalie Marks obtained her bachelor's degree with High Honors in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1998, and then proceeded to obtain a Masters in Veterinary Medicine and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree with High Honors from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. She became a Certified Veterinary Journalist in 2018.
She has been a veterinarian at Blum Animal Hospital since 2006, co-owner until 2018 and current associate. Prior to 2006, Dr. Marks worked at Allatoona Animal Hospital just north of Atlanta, GA. Her media experience began in print when she created several monthly veterinary columns in multiple community magazines and was a frequent guest speaker for the German Shepherd and Bernese Mountain Dog clubs of Atlanta.
Dr. Marks has received many prestigious awards in her career. She was awarded the Dr. Erwin Small First Decade Award, presented to a veterinarian that has contributed the most to organized veterinary medicine in his or her first decade of practice. In 2012, Dr. Marks was awarded Petplan's nationally-recognized Veterinarian of the Year. In 2015, she was awarded America’s Favorite Veterinarian by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. And, most recently in 2017, she was awarded Nobivac’s Veterinarian of the Year for her work on canine Influenza.
Dr. Marks is also very passionate about educating in all aspects of media, both locally and nationally. She has appeared on Good Day Chicago, WGN-Pet Central, NBC Morning News, ABC, CBS, NPR, WBBM, Northwestern University media channel and many local websites. Dr. Marks was featured nationally on the Today Show and CBS Nightly News during the canine influenza epidemic of 2015 and in multiple issues of JAVMA. She is a guest contributor in multiple media campaigns for Merck, Zoetis (formerly Pfizer), Boerhinger-Ingelheim, Ceva, Trupanion, Aratana, ScopioVet, and Royal Canin.
Dr. Marks is a regular columnist in Today’s Veterinary Business, Healthy Pet magazine, and Pet Vet, and has been published in Veterinary Medicine magazine, DVM magazine, Dogster, and Vetted. She is on the Advisory Board for Health Magazine and also was the host of numerous veterinary broadcasts for the Viticus Group (formerly WVC).
Dr. Marks finds the ideal combination of teaching/mentoring and improving the emotional health of pets in the Fear Free movement. She sat on the Fear Free Executive Council and is a national educator helping other private practitioners develop these techniques. She also led her practice to become the 7th nationally and first practice in Illinois to become a Fear Free Certified Hospital. She is an Elite Fear Free Certified Professional.
Finally, Dr. Marks is a serial entrepreneur, angel investor and consultant, and one of the newer members of VANE, the Veterinary Angel Network.

Dave has served on the New Hampshire Veterinary Technician board as the head of the credentials committee. Dave lives in Hillsborough NC on a farm with his partner Robyn and her daughter Ruby. They have many animals to care for including goats, horses, chickens, and a donkey to go along with 2 dogs, and 2 cats., I have a one year old daughter.
Jeff Backus started as a veterinary assistant in general practice in 1995 and began working in ECC in 2004. He became an RVT in 2009 and VTS(ECC) in 2013. Jeff also taught veterinary technician education for 7 years. He has been on the Board of Directors for the California RVT Association for 8 years, serving as President position from 2020-2022, and is now past President. After 4 years in academia at Tufts University, he relocated back to Southern California with his wife and began working for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. He is also a frequent lecturer and speaker with a focus on toxicology. He co-founded the Vet Tech Café podcast with Dave Cowan in 2019, talking about issues that face the veterinary technician profession with leaders in the field, and all of the amazing opportunities of the veterinary technician profession.

Dr. Natalie Marks obtained her bachelor's degree with High Honors in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1998, and her Masters in Veterinary Medicine and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree with High Honors from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. She became a Certified Veterinary Journalist in 2018.
She has been a veterinarian at Blum Animal Hospital since 2006, co-owner until 2018 and then associate. Prior to 2006, Dr. Marks worked at Allatoona Animal Hospital just north of Atlanta, GA.
Dr. Marks then became very active in the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association, serving on the executive board, the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, AVMA and AAHA.
Dr. Marks has received many prestigious awards in her career; awarded the Dr. Erwin Small First Decade Award, presented to a veterinarian that has contributed the most to organized veterinary medicine in his or her first decade of practice. In 2012, Dr. Marks was awarded Petplan's nationally-recognized Veterinarian of the Year. In 2015, she was awarded America’s Favorite Veterinarian by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. And, most recently in 2017, she was awarded Nobivac’s Veterinarian of the Year for her work on canine Influenza.
Dr. Marks is also very passionate about educating in all aspects of media, both locally and nationally. She has appeared on all major Chicagoland tv and radio news syndicates and many local websites. Dr. Marks was featured nationally on the Today Show and CBS Nightly News during the canine influenza epidemic of 2015 and in multiple issues of JAVMA. She is a guest contributor in multiple media campaigns for Merck, Zoetis (formerly Pfizer), Fear Free, Ceva, Trupanion, Aratana, ScopioVet, and Royal Canin.
Dr. Marks is a regular columnist in Today’s Veterinary Business, Healthy Pet magazine, the Fountain Report and Pet Vet, and has numerous other publications.
She is a desired national and international lecturer for many of the same companies at VMX, WVC, AVMA, DVM360, VetGirl, and regional conferences, and most recently was a featured speaker at Ceva Sweden’s Derm Day and the Royal Canin Global Symposium.
Dr. Marks finds the ideal combination of teaching/mentoring and improving the emotional health of pets in the Fear Free movement. She sat on the Fear Free Executive Council and is a national educator helping other private practitioners develop these techniques. She also led her practice to become the 7th nationally and first practice in Illinois to become a Fear Free Certified Hospital. She is a Elite Fear Free Certified Professional.
Finally, Dr. Marks is a serial entrepreneur, angel investor and consultant, and on the Executive Committee of VANE, the Veterinary Angel Network.

In 2000, he moved to the Animal Health Trust in the UK where in 2008 he took over as Head of the Division of Small Animal Studies. In 2012 he was appointed as Veterinary Director of International Cat Care and the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM), and since 2019 he has been an independent consultant. Dr. Andrea Eriksson De Rezende is a native of Eugene, Oregon and completed her undergraduate studies at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She received her veterinary degree from Oregon State University in 2005, which was followed by a one-year rotating small animal and surgical internship at Oregon State University. She then completed a three-year residency in cardiology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Eriksson De Rezende became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) in 2009. Until mid 2011, Andrea was an assistant professor of cardiology at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Andrea then moved to Brooklyn, NY to join the Veterinary Emergency and Referral group. Currently, Andrea is managing partner at Skyline Veterinary Specialists in Matthews, NC. Dr. Michael Schaer received his D.V.M. degree from the University of Illinois in 1970. He then went to the Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York City where he served as an intern and then as a medicine resident between1970-73. After the residency, he remained at the AMC as a staff member in the Department of Medicine until 1977. He then joined a private small animal practice in New Jersey until late 1978 at which time he joined the faculty at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine where he has remained until the present time. He has published several papers and book chapters and he has lectured nationally and internationally. Dr Schaer is also the author of five textbooks: Clinical Medicine of the Dog and Cat – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions and Clinical Signs in Small Animal Medicine, 1st and 2nd editions. At the U of F, Dr. Schaer functions mainly as a clinician and a teacher. His previous UF professional duties included: Professor and Associate Chairman-Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, Associate Chief of Staff-Small Animal Hospital, and Service Chief-Small Animal Medicine. Dr. Schaer served as Interim Chair, Department of Comparative, Diagnostic, and Population Medicine from February 2017-September 2018. He is currently Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, while still doing active teaching in the classroom and in the critical care unit. Dr. Schaer is board certified in internal medicine (ACVIM) and emergency and critical care (ACVECC).

Dr. Tim Evans is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and of the The American Board of Veterinary Toxicology. Dr. Evans was the Toxicology Section Head in the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Missouri for almost twenty years, until November 1, 2022, and he now wears several new hats at the University of Missouri, including Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, MU College of Veterinary Medicine Public Engagement & Continuing Education Coordinator, and MU Extension Specialist in Animal Health & Veterinary Toxicology. Dr. Evans received his DVM from the University of California, Davis in 1982, and he earned both his MS (1996) and PhD (2002) from MIZZOU. He has been described as “intimidatingly enthusiastic,” especially when it comes to teaching veterinary professional students, and he was recognized as the April 2009 Nerd of MIZZOU and Nerd of the Year in 2010. Dr. Evans was also recognized as a William T. Kemper Fellow for Excellence in Teaching in 2013 and was MIZZOU’s 2015-2016 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Evans also has a superhero alter ego, THE ANTIDOTE, the enemy of ALL things toxic, who periodically makes appearances in the classroom. Tim has been married to his extremely patient wife, Debbie, for 41 years, and they have two adult children, Andreya and William.
