289 - Production - Based Pay For Support Staff
Dr. Peter Weinstein explores the feasibility of implementing a production-based compensation model for veterinary support staff with Cone of Shame host, Dr. Andy Roark. Dr. Weinstein argues that while veterinarians benefit directly from production-based pay, the staff executing the bulk of the work often remain on fixed salaries, creating a disconnect in compensation fairness. The conversation also touches on broader topics such as profit-sharing and the overall drive to enhance workplace morale and productivity. They examine whether tying wages to service delivery could equitably distribute earnings and reflect individual contributions more accurately, potentially revolutionizing compensation structures in veterinary practices.

ABOUT OUR GUEST
Dr. Amy Thomson, often known as “toothy”, is passionate about teeth! However, it was not always this way – she started her career in small animal practice with very minimal dentistry knowledge. She was fortunate to have a great mentor in her first job where she learned a lot and her desire to learn more grew. Once she attended her first Veterinary Dental Forum in 2013, she KNEW dentistry was her passion - and became affectionately known as “Toothy Thomson”.
With time and support from her family, friends, collogues and a big ‘shove’ from her mentor she applied for a dentistry and oral surgery residency and was overjoyed when she matched at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During her residency her passion grew not only for dentistry, but also for teaching. And because life is always full of surprises Dr. Thomson found herself at a crossroad in 2020 in the early stages of the pandemic – so she started her own mobile dentistry practice!
In addition to with working alongside small animal general practice teams, she also became very active online sharing her knowledge. It has always been important for her to share as much as she can, given it took hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to obtain the knowledge she did while in general practice. Knowledge she wants to see all veterinary teams have!

ABOUT OUR GUEST
Dr. Amy Thomson, often known as "Toothy," is passionate about teeth! However, it was not always this way—she started her career in small animal practice with very minimal dentistry knowledge. She was fortunate to have a great mentor in her first job, where she learned a lot and her desire to learn more grew. Once she attended her first Veterinary Dental Forum in 2013, she KNEW dentistry was her passion—and became affectionately known as “Toothy Thomson.”
With time and support from her family, friends, colleagues, and a big ‘shove’ from her mentor, she applied for a dentistry and oral surgery residency and was overjoyed when she matched at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During her residency, her passion grew not only for dentistry but also for teaching. And because life is always full of surprises, Dr. Thomson found herself at a crossroads in 2020 in the early stages of the pandemic—so she started her own mobile dentistry practice!
In addition to working alongside small animal general practice teams, she also became very active online, sharing her knowledge. It has always been important for her to share as much as she can, given it took hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to obtain the knowledge she did while in general practice. Knowledge she wants to see all veterinary teams have!

ABOUT OUR GUEST
Dr. Beth Venit VMD is a graduate from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2007. Throughout the area of Washington, DC, she practiced small animal medicine, both ER and GP, as both a full-time associate and a relief veterinarian for the next 12 years. In that time, she earned her Masters of Public Health from the University of Iowa and became a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. She then worked at the US Department of State, first as a fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and then as a full-time project manager focused on training foreign partners on biorisk management and the prevention of bioterrorism. In 2022, she joined the American Association for Veterinary State Boards as their first Chief Veterinary Officer.
In her free time, she enjoys hiking in various parts of the world with her husband (past trips include hiking the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, several 14ers in Colorado, and a successful summit of Kilimanjaro), and being lazy on the couch with her pittie mix, Eleanor Woofsevelt and maine coon/tiger mix, The Chairman Meow.
