Not so! In our errors we find our very own powerful Creation story.  My clients ask me how to find the powerful Creation story that belongs to them and where to start. In the beginning I said I’m finding myself or healing old stuff. But it never rang true. Rather, I was called to walk. That was true. There was no more denying that call than stopping my own heartbeat.But called for what? There were days I felt like I missed the spiritual boat. There were days I felt like I made a poor pilgrim. There were days I asked for answers and heard only silence in the wind.Now I know. We began by recognizing that in its very simplest form a story is made up of 3 parts: something was (a routine) + something happened (a complication) + something is (a consequence or result).I remembered an event on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. You must have a sturdy pair of trekking poles (or sticks) to help you navigate 500 miles of muddy, rocky, slippery, downhill slopes; equally steep, rocky, muddy, mountain passes, city streets that go on forever when you can barely take another step. Or maybe to just to lean on and catch your breath. Mine were red and I usually kept them close to hand.Until one day out on the Maseta, the flat dry plains of Spain that stretch to the horizon, I stopped at a café and left my sticks leaning against the outside wall. It’s what we all did. But when I came out of the café my sticks were gone.Now what do I do? I have weeks of mountains to climb. The rains were on the way. How will I manage?I began to run in the direction I was headed. Running, in hiking boots, with a 15 pound backpack, feeling angry, self-pitying, disappointed in all pilgrims, and swearing a blue streak. Finally, I ran out of words, out of breath and stopped. I let it all go. What were sticks anyway but metal and rubber? I could likely buy another pair in some city up ahead.    Just then I saw a woman swinging my sticks. I caught up to her, she handed them over without a word, I said Buen Camino! and walked on. Many things we experience in Life are little more than annoyments. Funny thing about Life: it provides when you least expect it and you're willing to allow it.Story Prompt: Sometimes what’s lost will circle right back to you. When has that happened? Recently a colleague mentioned that she had gotten some documents ready but now they were out of sight and out of mind. No matter, she said. I’ll leave it to my family to sort out.My mom died after a short battle with lymphoma during which time we were not allowed to ask about or prepare for her end-of-life. It was a scramble of 7 siblings helping dad carry out all the many preparations one isn’t faced with until one is. We did it well,  and then we grieved.You would think we learned a lesson. But when dad died all we knew is that he had wanted to be buried in a plain pine box made by an order of monks. Now what? Fortunately, his best friend had the details. Once again we scrambled to get the pine box made and shipped to the funeral home.    End-of-life wishes are like a GPS for your loved ones, a way to say to them in their time of grief: Here, my beloveds, I can help you. I have this map of what to do and how to go about it. You won’t be led astray. Why? Nothing is more important than our peace, our joy. How does he become free? Thay says, “I establish myself in the present moment.”I was struck by that word, establish, which means ‘to begin or bring about’. We all need something to do, someone to love, something to hope for; even in small doses it’s available to us.“The phrase ‘I don’t know’ is often the shortest, most effective and least expensive way of staying honest.” If you don’t know you don’t know. Say so. In this case dad enlisted in the US Navy to fight in World War II. He was underage. How did he get in? He lied. He had a piece of paper in his shoe with the number 18 written on it. When dad was asked if he was over 18 he truthfully replied, Yes.Dad served as a radioman. All 5 brothers saw action, were honorably discharged and came home in good condition. I have an ancient newspaper clipping with a photo of my grandmother receiving a medal from the mayor thanking her for sending her boys to help Uncle Sam.Having fallen in love with this family story and the movie, South Pacific, there was no other choice for me but to apply to Officer Candidate School after graduating from college. I was commissioned as an Ensign and reported for duty to Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Surgical Pediatric ward. I number these years as a USNavy nurse among the finest of my life. It seems like only yesterday the family of 9 was camping in New Hampshire. One morning the parents parked the family station wagon in a grocery store lot taking Paul with them seated in the grocery cart. Time passed. They returned with the groceries, stowed them in the station wagon, got back in and drove away leaving Paul in the shopping cart in the parking lot. Of course us kids thought this was hilarious and we waved goodbye out the windows.Time passed. Mom looked around asking: where’s Paul? We could barely speak for laughing. One brave soul pointed back in the direction we came. Ever see a station wagon pull a 180 at high speed on a country road? There he was just where the parents left him, calmly looking around at whatever was there. Paul’s sense of serenity has stayed with him over the decades. Native across the Pacific Northwest, the stunning violet-blue flowers of camas historically lit up prairies, marshes, and oak savannahs. Camas once dominated open clearings maintained by first nations people who carefully tended large grasslands to maintain optimal growing conditions. Bulbs were dug in the fall and pit roasted to break down the inulin into simpler sweet caramelized sugars, providing a staple food for thousands of years.When I visited PRI in early spring there was no camas to be seen. Did they exist? Indeed they did but they had not yet manifested. The bulbs were lying in wait for the right conditions of sun and warmth and rain to bloom.Practical Tip: We tend to think in terms of something existing or not existing. But that is not reality. If you pay attention you’ll know that what you are waiting for is there, it’s hidden, you won’t see it until the time is right, but it exists. But what if there’s nothing to hold on to?We were high in the cold and snowy Canadian Rocky Mountains. 6 women and 2 guides on an Outward Bound  mountaineering trip. Far above us and out of sight the guides had secured the climbing ropes beyond the cliff edge. In pairs we climbed up and rappelled down the sheer face of a mountain. Climbing up my partner froze midway between the top of the cliff edge and the rocky ground far below. She stammered out: “I can't find anything to hold on to.” Time passed. And then a voice from far above us called out, “Grab it with both hands!” It worked! She got to the top! But how? You may hear your heartbeat or your breath, but focus on silence. As you dwell in silence you will feel it penetrate your body and cleanse your being. The problem being the friend asking you to do this favor is herself now in hospital having suffered a stroke, can barely speak, recall, or think clearly.My sister, Patrice, is both brilliant and resourceful. She figured out a way to draw bits of information from her friend so she could contact the funeral home, arrange for the church, the priest, and more in the hope that her friend would be well enough to leave the hospital to attend the funeral of her own sister.Question: Where are your end-of-life wishes written down? Who knows them? If you’ve not yet gotten to this task, when will you? And, this might be a good time to think about drafting your legacy story, maybe even your obituary. It’s your life! Hello to you listening in Farmington, Missouri!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.  In 1854 Jacob and Sarah Ebey were 61 and 58 years old respectively (more than twice the age of the average traveler) when they left Missouri and set out on the Oregon Trail. Traveling over 2,000 miles and across the rugged, forbidding Rocky Mountains they made their way to Whidbey Island, Washington. Why leave home and all they knew for this arduous journey in their late years? Because their son Isaac said that the farmland was far better than any in the Midwest making this new frontier home for the families.  You have to wonder about these settlers who were willing to leave the comfort of all they knew unaware of what awaited them on the other side except maybe this: that the lives they had led were not going to be the lives they would lead.  How did they forge new frontiers? I imagine that it took willingness in the face of uncertainty.  Like them, we’re all challenged with forging new paths in our lives; but we can and we will as long as we remember to say “Yes! Despite the odds. Yes!
