On Sounds Like Radio Volume 120 things are gettin' back to normal.   We're now picking back up with our latest Great Gildersleeve episodes, that being the first season of the Willard Waterman as Gildersleeve shows.  It's so nice to get back to these Waterman shows.  Now we did get to hear Willard Waterman's first New Year show from late December 1950 and that nice Christmas Willard show from 1956 or '57 but now it's time to return to the point where we left off on Sounds Like Radio in Volume 113.   Today from December 6, 1950 The Great Gildersleeve finds his nephew Leroy trying to earn a little money on his own.   You might say he wants to clean up in his new venture.   But alas, there's a bit of a boo-boo and Gildy may have to step in.   BUT, fear not Your Humble Host has brought with him plenty of help for little Leroy.  Today we'll hear from The Lost In Space Robot, Julie London, Marty Robbins, Joanie Sommers (she's the sweetie in our picture with this show), Bing Crosby, Kaye Starr & none other than the stereo Ink Spots. 

We've been in Christmas and New Year's mode for a while now but it's time to return to our normal great radio show features.   Today from the Library of Sound (LOS) of Sounds Like Radio we find Volume 163 which just happens to be one of our favorite shows around here, Bold Venture.  Time for Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall to get back on the stick as "Shannon is Framed For Murder" originally broadcast on April 30, 1951.   Your Humble Host and Bogie are headed out to sea to bring you another BOOOOLD VENTUUURE!    

Your Humble Host is proud to present Volume 8 of our one of a kind Christmas Music & Gildy Specials!!   Hot off the presses or hot off the recorder comes our brand new 2022 Christmas Special.   Not only is the music wonderful but it's an extra special Sounds Like Radio for the Great Gildersleeve episode that Your Humble Host has in store for you.    Today's Christmas episode of GIldy is not to be found anywhere or even described in Gildersleeve logs.   It is truly an exclusive Gildersleeve straight from Your Humble Host's own private collection of tapes I recorded back in the day.   Today's show is one of the very last if not the very last Christmas episode of the Great Gildersleeve series.  It comes from either December 20, 1956 or December 19, 1957 it's not even described in the surviving logs except only as a broadcast date.   Willard Waterman tells the story of the Ringing of The Chimes and he tells it in the most beautiful fashion ever.  I've heard other versions from prior years of Willard's Gildy but this last Christmas episode Willard really gives it his all in this final telling.    A beautiful Christmas episode deserves the best Christmas music to go with it.   We got more never heard anymore Christmas songs for you today from deep in our Christmas Musical Library of Sound.  Great singers are here, so is a visit from Grandpa and Jimmy Dean and you won't believe it but the star of North By Northwest and the Christmas classic movie The Bishop's Wife, you guessed it, if not, you'll hear from him today.   All the stars come out to sing and perform on Sounds Like Radio's Christmas Specials.    This is Your Humble Host's present to all of you.   I thank each and every one for listening and wish you a Merry Merry Christmas!!!

Time for the Library of Sound Volume 152 direct from the Shep Wing.   Welcome friends to another Exclusive Jean Shepherd Show only heard here as this is another of my own recorded original Shep tapes.   It's a show about Jean as a kid receiving a Lead Soldier Making kit from his Uncle.   A very interesting and entertaining show that is not really a Christmas show but as it involves gift giving I thought this a good time to play it for you.   Recorded by Your Humble Host on May 14, 1975 but it was originally broadcast live on October  17, 1974.   Enjoy a rarely heard kid story from our favorite story teller Jean Shepherd!

Oh yes, it's Sounds Like Radio Volume 119 as in today's September 24, 1947 episode of the Great Gildersleeve we find his secretary, Bessie, all in a heap.  Yep, Bessie's got boyfriend troubles and can't concentrate at work.  Gildy he thinks he knows the cure, spruce Bessie up for her boyfriend by buying her a new dress!  Bessie's going to look real dressy in her new dress.    But Gildy's not the only one who's willing to help, Your Humble Host calls in the troops to offer their advice.  The troops being Arthur Godfrey, a duet with Judy Garland & Bing Crosby, Merle Haggard likes shopping for dresses, Kay Starr knows how it is, Jimmy Dean offers us breakfast and has some good advice for Bessie, Jaye P. Morgan offers her side and Frank Sinatra shows up to tell us what no one tells you.   Oh, the Sounds Like Radio studios are jam packed with good music and great singers.  Your Humble Host is here to wrangle them all and here it is for you! 

On the Library of Sound (LOS) Volume 149 it's time once again to call for Sam Spade to investigate The Bail Bond Caper from June 27, 1948.   Now how's Sam going to handle this without good old Effie to take the report.   Well, Effie's sent in Bernadine to fill in.  Is this a help?   In between handling this latest investigation Sam loves singing about Wild Root Hair Tonic.   Your Humble Host just may start using Wild Root Hair goop if it's half as good as the singing commercials.   Gear up, grease up and let's listen to Sam Spade.

It's seems like it's been quite a while since our last "normal" Sounds Like Radio show, but we're back and going strong with Volume 118 of Sounds Like Radio.  Today The Great Gildersleeve from September 17, 1947 hears from the folks in town that the water pressure is very low (Gildy's the Water Commissioner, don't cha know).  As soon as he gets on that he's got to clear the leaves off his roof.   Oh, Gildy's havin' it today.   But never fear Your Humble Host is here and knows just what to do to help out this situation.   How about a great visit from one of our favorites, Crazy Gugenheim!!   That's right today we hear the latest from Crazy, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby, Joanie Sommers, Jim Reeves & Eva Cassidy!  Some really nice music today and it's just what we needed.  

The Whistler has returned to Your Humble Host's Library of Sound Volume 148 to tell us another of his strange mysteries.   I try out my whistler but sometimes the pucker ain't just right.  Luckily for us the Whistler who's used to this sort of thing is here and he's got a strange one for us.  The Shrunken Head Curse originally heard June 13, 1942 but now it's here for you on The Library of Sound.

Welcome to your Humble Host's Library of Sound Volume 147.  Today we proceed to 221 B Baker Street to visit with Sherlock Holmes.   Dr. Watson is here and he's going to tell us all about the Case of the Red Headed League.  A most mysterious case, meaning it's perfect for Sherlock Holmes.   From September 25, 1964 hear now Carleton Hobbs & Norman Shelly perform their magic as Sherlock and Watson.

We've got an October treat for you today from Jean Shepherd on the Library of Sound Volume 143.   No it's not a spooky show, but it is a story that takes place around Halloween time (like right now).   This is a true classic Jean Shepherd kid story all about when Jean had to sell seeds for his school door to door.   He finds out it's not as easy as it seems and he was never made out to be a salesman.   A classic Jean Shepherd kid story originally broadcast October 16, 1964.   Your Humble Host had to scramble today to get this one ready for you.    Enjoy Jean Shepherd at his best talking about his life as a kid.   

It's Sounds Like Radio Volume 117 as The Great Gildersleeve is rethinking all about former flame Eve Goodwin. She's looking mighty fine in GIldy's memory and he tries to rekindle that old flame. Now Eve was never the most fun filled date even when she liked him, so, well, Good Luck Gildy.  But Your Humble Host never gives up hope so we'll do all we can to help out. That means today it'll be time for Miss Nibbs, herself Georgia Gibbs (who's pictured here with our show), Bing Crosby is here for a 2 fer, in one of his songs he'll even be singing with himself!!, Jo Stafford lends her dulcet tones, Johnny Hartman describes Gildy to a tee, Jimmy Durante flies in for a word and Billie Holiday takes Eve's side in this whole fandango. From September 10, 1947 Harold Peary is back for the mean time as The Great Gildersleeve.

From Your Humble Host's personal collection of Jean Shepherd shows, here's one  I recorded January 29, 1975 and it's a funny one.   As Jean Shepherd hears from a kid who gets Shep's program in a most unusual place and it could drive him buggy.    Shep's having a good time today and so will we in today's Shep selection from our Vast Library of Sound Volume 142.  

In today's Library of Sound Volume 141 Johnny Dollar's in New Orleans to investigate a fire insurance claim the holder of the policy does NOT want paid to him.   Well, this does sound suspicious.   There's more to this than at first appears in this Yours Truly Johnny Dollar classic episode from November 25, 1956.   Your Humble Host is in on this hot case with you and Johnny.

Sounds Like Radio is here with Volume 116 and an especially exciting selection of music to inspire Gildy in his cigar habit breaking.   Yep, we hear the May 28, 1947 Great Gildersleeve as Gildy is told by the doc to give up the cigars.   But never fear, Your Humble Host is here and I've brought along with me some mighty fine singers to help kick that cigar habit.   Just wait till I tell you, now Tex Williams don't mind the cigars so much as he's more annoyed at others taking smoking breaks, Peggy Lee, she's going to drive us all mad with her desires, Bing reminds us of that danger, Sophie Tucker she also has a bad habit she's going to tell us all about, Louis Armstrong is bird watching or listening anyway, Helen Ward sweetly sways her way through the smoke and then it's bonus time: we bring on Phil Harris for a special rarely heard version of a song we just couldn't resist.    Gildy may have a hard time givin' up the smokes, but we're having fun here.   Uh, that's Edie Adams you see pictured with today's show and baby, You ain't helpin'.

It's a Bing Crosby edition of the Library of Sound Volume 140 as Bing & Ken Carpenter get together to talk Nantucket and Bing has a few songs he'd like to sing for you too.   Another one of Your Humble Host's favorite EXCLUSIVE Bing "Unplugged" shows from June 25, 1956.  These are the 15 minute Bing's that we find so enjoyable.   Enjoy this Bing show you won't find anywhere else on the interwebs.

It's time to take another stroll through the dark rain soaked streets of detective noir.   Our favorite tough guy private eye Philip Marlowe gets a $50 bill in the mail, he thinks it's from a Heart of Gold but he learns no one gets nothin' for nothin'.   The Library of Sound Volume 139 and Your Humble Host bring you The Adventures of Philip Marlowe today from October 24, 1948.   Marlowe earns that $50 the hard way, but we'll be right there with him with some moral support.      

In today's Sounds Like Radio Volume 115 we find our very own Throckmorton Gildersleeve worried about the education Leroy is getting in school.   Let's just say Gildy is lucky he isn't around now to see the daily horrors that are being indoctrinated into our kids today.   But that's for another kind of program.   We're here to have a brief respite from today's news disasters and enjoy some music and a few laughs with Your Humble Host and The Great Gildersleeve from May 21, 1947.   Helping out with educating Leroy properly will be Frank Sinatra, the Andrew Sisters, Vaughn Monroe, the Park Avenue Hillbillie-Dorothy Shay (pictured here with today's show), Bing Crosby and last but not least Gogi Grant rounds out the education system.    Least we know our readin, riten' and rithmetic, only hope the kids today will be able to say the same thing.  

Today Your Humble Host has for you an extra funny and entertaining episode of one of the best comedy shows on radio.   It's the Jack Benny Show on today's Library of Sound Volume 138.   And what makes this so special is that a very rare appearance, in fact it may have been his only appearance, of the World's Greatest Entertainer Al Jolson on Jack's show.   That's right, 2 of the very best-Jack Benny and Al Jolson together on today's fun filled Library of Sound with Your Humble Host.

It's time for Sounds Like Radio Volume 114 and a Great Gildersleeve from May 14, 1947.   You may have noticed we've gone back in time and have not proceeded to the next normally heard Willard Waterman Gildy today which takes place in December of 1950.   Why?  Because the next several Willard Waterman Gildy episodes are all involving their Christmas season.   Rather than play Christmas shows for you in September and October we're going to delay those episodes until our own last week of November.  This way the current Waterman Christmas season will synchronize with our own Christmas season.   We're not skipping any, we're just not listening to them till the last week of November. Instead today we're going back to the 2 months of Gildy episodes that occurred just BEFORE our Sounds Like Radio Episode One.  We started Sounds Like Radio Vol. 1 with the Oct. 22, 1947 show and today we're listening to the May 14, 1947 show.   Episodes we've never heard on Sounds Like Radio before.    In today's show Peevy, our friendly neighborhood druggist has skipped town.  He's missing!!!   Where's he gone???   You'll even hear a very rare appearance of Mrs. Peevy today!!   We'll find out what's what and to help out will be Kay Starr, the Ink Spots, Jaye P. Morgan, Bing Crosby, Teresa Brewer & Dean Martin who will even sing us an encore classic.    A classic Harold Peary Gildersleeve from the period just before we started here in Volume One.   Fear not we'll return to the Willard Waterman Christmas season of shows, not skipping any, starting in late November. From the Vast Library of Sound Volume 136 comes one of radio's classic mystery shows!   Your Humble Host is happy to bring you the very first episode of The Whistler from May 16, 1942.   The Whistler was a strange narrator of weird and unusual stories with a strange sense of amusement over the subjects of his tales.   Today's story is called "Retribution".     The Whistler awaits for he knows many things and has been many places.   Listen as he tells you of one.

Call out for Effie, time for her to take notes as Sam Spade returns to the Library of Sound Volume 135 to tell of the "Death Bed Caper" as it was originally broadcast on June 20, 1948.   Your Humble Host is already on the edge of his seat biting his nails in nervous excitement.    What is Sam up to?  What dangers lurk?  Where's he going?   Who's the bad guy?  Is Sam on his death bed?   Why don't we just listen and stop asking silly questions?   Sounds good to me.   It's Sam Spade time!!

We're back right where we love it, Sounds Like Radio!   Today it's Volume 113 as little Leroy is asked by Sweet little Brenda to go to a Cotillion dance with her!   Leroy is one lucky dude today on The Great Gildersleeve from November 29, 1950.  Will Leroy and Brenda be doing the classic dance "The Stroll"?   Well, I don't know about Leroy but we sure will be doing the Stroll today with The Diamonds!  That's gonna get us in the mood for more great sounds from Miss Nibs--Georgia Gibbs, Al Jolson & Bing Crosby, Emmylou Harris, Tab Hunter, Ella Fitzgerald, the great Phil Harris and just for good measure-Nat King Cole.  Ohh a whole lotta shakin' goin' on and a whole lotta fun too.   

Your Humble Host is proud to bring you another original Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes story on Volume 134 of our Vast Library of Sound (LOS).  Today it's the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as he investigates the case of "The Five Orange Pips".   A classic Sherlock radio show too as this one is from November 28, 1966 and is one of the best.  Let's all don our Deerstalker hats to investigate along with Sherlock.

It's Back to School time and that means Jean Shepherd's thoughts turn to his own school daze.   On the Library of Sound Volume 133 Your Humble Host is all in a daze with just the thought of returning to school.  Oh how I dreaded it.  But maybe a funny little visit with Jean and his school thoughts and his buddy Jack Morton will make this time just a little better.   From 1971 here is a classic Shep show right out of the vaults and into your hearts on Sounds Like Radio's Library of Sound.

In Volume 112 of Sounds Like Radio Gildy finds himself having to make a calendar girl choice.   It's a brave decision to be made by The Great Gildersleeve from November 22, 1950 when he has to choose between his old girlfriend Nurse Milford and the new vixen Vicki who's set her sights on our hero too.  We'll see what happens, but you know we wouldn't leave Gildy alone to face this Calendar Girl dilemma.   No sir, to help in this momentous decision we have the beguiling Lee Wiley along with Dean Martin, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland and Ray Charles.  They all put their heads together just to offer Gildy some way to handle this.  And bringing all these great thinkers to the show is none other than Your Humble Host.    A fun show is what we have here along with some mighty fine music.

Library of Sound Volume 129 is here with more real laughs with the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show!   From October 10, 1948 and things go awry when Phil's buddy, Remley signs the contract to be the star of Phil & Alice's show.  A star has arrived, time for Phil & Alice to move aside.  Remley gets to live it up, least till the mistake is found.  Your Humble Host finds these Phil Harris-Alice Faye shows truly laugh out loud funny, take a comedy break today with the Library of Sound.

It's Volume 111 of Sounds Like Radio with a Great Gildersleeve show from November 15, 1950 and a whole lot of goodies in the musical department too.  Today Gildy is auditioning for the Summerfield Festival and even Birdie gets in on the act singing a nice song here.  It's a fun Gildy episode and we have some fun music for you too.  Starting with a beautiful STEREO recording the Andrew Sisters made of their hits, we'll hear them sing one from that album.  Also stopping by will be Dean Martin, Petula Clark, then Bing Crosby, Bob Hope & Peggy Lee will all sing together, Dinah Washington wants to know, Roy Rogers sings of his Home On The Range and Bing comes back because they didn't believe him.    Well, a jam packed show once again filled with music and mirth with Your Humble Host.    

Your Humble Host has something a little unusual today and an interesting bit of Magoo history.   In this Library of Sound Volume 128 we present the best of the 1950's album "Mr. Magoo In Hi-Fi".   An unusual album find that is mainly made up of music used in the Mr. Magoo theatrical cartoons of the late '40's and thru the '50's.  While I didn't find the music at all interesting they DID have a selection on that album featuring the voices of Mr. Magoo (Jim Backus who later was Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island) and Daws Butler (Huckleberry Hound and countless other cartoon characters) doing a comedy bit with their Hi-Fi system.   It's a nice little bit here that from an album that ranks as one of my most obscure finds.  Anyone who listens to my Sounds Like Radio shows knows I like background music from classic shows as I use it for my podcasts too but I'm afraid the music heard in the theatrical Magoo's was less than interesting and downright weird.  So never fear, Your Humble Host is here to play you JUST the Mr. Magoo comedy bit from this odd album.  If you're a Mr. Magoo fan you'll like it, if you're too young to know about Mr. Magoo enjoy it here and then seek out some Mr. Magoo cartoons.  Mr. Magoo was an old guy who couldn't see well and would mistake objects in front of him for other things.  I grew up watching the cartoon TV Mr. Magoo series which contained all new '60's Magoo toons.  I liked those better than the '50's movie Magoos and would like to have an album of '60's Magoo cartoon music.   But let's take a listen here to Jim Backus the real Mr. Magoo from an album rather in a toon.  

It's time for an investigation with radio's toughest PI Philip Marlowe.  This week on the Library of Sound (LOS) Volume 127 we dip into the October 17, 1948 files to hear a Philip Marlowe adventure called "Where There's A Will".  Oh, it's a strange one as Philip has to spend a night with a cat, a pig, and an APE(!) and they just don't make for good company.  Least wise that's the way I see it.   We'll see how Marlowe sees it now as we listen.

Get set to Climb Every Mountain, well, at least one, "Old Stone Face" with Gildersleeve and Mr. Bullard.   It's Volume 110 today of Sounds Like Radio featuring a November 8, 1950 episode of The Great Gildersleeve with Gale Gordon & Willard Waterman.  These 2 would later work together in the Dennis The Menace TV show that came a few years after this Gildy show.  Willard Waterman played the grocer, Mr. Quigley in Dennis The Menace and also played Gildersleeve in the TV version.   And to bring out the best in every episode of Sounds Like Radio we have some mighty sweet music as always both before and after Gildy.  Today Your Humble Host brings you a Teresa Brewer STEREO version of one of her hits,  Bing Crosby is here to dream, but no not of White Christmas yet, then Crazy Gugenheim drops in on Your Humble Host to sing a little ditty as Frank Fontaine, the effervescent Jaye P. Morgan sings a lovely from her alluring album the cover of which you can see posted next to our show this week-Vah Vah Vah Voom, David Allyn a singer new to Sounds Like Radio but not to our library sings a ditty you may be familiar with, and the wonderful Helen O'Connell is in the mood to slow it down in her musical selection.    We even get to take a break and sip some Campbell's soup with a call back to Lassie. It's another jam packed little show with Your Humble Host in tow and right there with you.

Your Humble Host welcomes you to enjoy a classic Jean Shepherd story today that he recorded on January 17, 1975.   It's all about when Jean Shepherd's mother had the Dish Rag Chain Letter madness!   She wanted those dish rags even if the "Old Man" thought she was nuts.   Shep was a kid and he was stuck in the middle of that pile of dish rags too.   Listen today to a funny story Shep even told on TV in a PBS special from 1982 called "The Great American Fourth of July & Other Disasters".  This tape comes from Your Humble Host's personal Library of Sound recordings Volume 126.  

From the Library of Sound Volume 125 comes a strange and dangerous visit with The Shadow.  Today Your Humble Host dips into the files of September 26, 1943 to find this extra eerie edition of The Shadow.  Margo Lane gets into more trouble than she bargained for when she finds herself surrounded by The Gibbering Things.  YIPE!   Now it's up to the Shadow to find her and prove once again that Crime Does Not Pay.     

Oooh we got a good one today.  I just heard it myself and I want to hear it again.  FIrst off in GIldy Land today the Mayor's race is heating up and GIldy's backing rotten neighbor Bullard.  Gildy passes out the ceegars to campaign for Bullard and things go awry from there.   Listen to Sounds Like Radio Volume 109 and the November 1, 1950 Great Gildersleeve.   Bonus-ville:  I'll be telling you all about what happened to me with my first cars, a Kojak '73 Buick and an American Motors 1973 Levis Jeans Gremlin.  We'll even hear an original vintage ad advertising that very Levis Gremlin I drove!   In addition to hearing the original '73 Gremlin ad you can see in our picture that accompanies this show the original 1973 ad.  Yes, I was quite the groovy cat.   But the really good news is what we have for you both before and after the Gildersleeve show.  I've gone deep into the Sounds Like Radio archives and have emerged with some winners.   We'll be listening to 2 very special STEREO recordings by the REAL Ink Spots and the real Vaughn Monroe!!!  We then turn to a song written by Ralph Kramden & Ed Norton from Jackie Gleason's Honeymooners and the actual record made of that song by Bob Manning.  Jo Stafford thinks Gildy has trouble in mind, Bing Crosby and Peggy Lee are here to sing a duet that is rarely found or heard, Billie Holiday sings a really neat song that is not one you ever hear Billie sing, but you will today.  

Your Humble Host enters the Library of Sound and brings forth Volume 124.   It's The Adventures of Sam Spade and "The Bow Window Caper" from November 9, 1947.  Another action packed story mixed with a few laughs along the way.  It's the way we like it too.

Welcome to Sounds Like Radio Volume 108 where The Great Gildersleeve from October 25, 1950 finds himself wanting to join the Sons of Summerfield.  But there may be a catch, the initiation is giving Gildy the jitters and 2nd thoughts.  Will Gildy join in with the boys in town or will he decide to just have a Coke at the drug store with Peevey?   After hearing today's show he may take a new '65 Buick down to Peevey's.  Oh well, you know we have a few advisers on hand to help.  Lola Albright (she's pictured with this show) she tells our boy to Do What You Gotta Do, Dean Martin agrees with Gildy, Jo Stafford is wanted for what she knows, Gogi Grant's desire is to be a Son of Summerfield, Bing Crosby & The Andrew Sisters find it peculiar and Grandpa advises Gildy to consider being a wanderer.   It's all in good fun today and Your Humble Host is happy to have you join in.
