As I shared in episode 509, I recently completed my CrossFit Level 1 Training. It really got me thinking about how I can make sure I'm not simply going through the motions of exercise, but that I'm really doing the right things for my body and my goals. Too many people 'check the box' by going to the gym, but they aren't increasing their fitness or moving towards their goal of fat loss. I texted my good friend and former trainer Nathan and asked if he'd help me establish a general framework for my own workouts, within the CrossFit format I love so much. See, in a CrossFit gym, owners/trainers can choose to write their own programming. Some programming is fantastic. Some leaves much to be desired. My fitness isn't in the hands of my gym owner, my fitness is in my hands. After Nathan and I began chatting about this over the phone, I said, "Hey! I think my podcast listeners would love to listen in on this conversation! Are you okay recording this with me?" He agreed, and that's what we're doing in today's episode. Change can be hard. It can be frustrating. It can feel lonely. For much of my life I felt exhausted by work I hadn't even yet done...I felt like the road ahead of me was impossible. I have no doubt that those feelings contributed to depression & isolation. I could absolutely still choose that perspective. I could choose to upset myself by fixating on what I don't yet have, on how far I have to go, on the gap between where I am and where I want to be and the work I'll have to do to change. Fortunately, I choose a dramatically different perspective and my new perspective makes change dramatically easier and prevents me from experiencing depressive symptoms. I'm only intrigued by things I can act on immediately. I'm intrigued by things that help me improve what I do & how I act. My mind is full of ideas. I think we need to know less but do more.  Today's episode is about something that moved me to action and immediately increased my effort. It's an Instagram post from CrossFit athlete Dan Bailey. After injury and surgery, here's what he had to say:  "Currently a little over 3 weeks out from surgery after rupturing my quad tendon. Still pretty swollen but it’s getting better every week. Progress isn’t measured in lbs and kilos but centimeters of knee flexion and reduction in swelling (that and setting a goal to bench 4 wheels). Everyday starts with a POD attitude (performance on demand @tosh.crookedbutterfly) meaning, this is the best your going to feel today, even though your knee looks like a softball, that doesn’t really matter, performance is still demanded, so what can you do mentally, physically and spiritually to increase your work capacity?
