Nikki has had a lifelong loves shopping second-hand and she thought she would open an online shop that would one day evolve into a brick and mortar second-hand boutique. Nikki started selling at Barley Wheat Vintage a little over a year ago.  After spending time with the business and getting to know her customer, she learned that the business is really more about vintage personal styling and women’s empowerment. Now Nikki puts all her skills to work -- she is a photographer, stylist, and offers in-home gatherings to shop curated vintage racks.  What began as a whisper of an idea has grown into an inclusive space for women to thrive, inspire and grow. Together with a new business partner, today their mission is to bring sustainable, vintage fashion to the modern woman and to break down standard societal barriers in everyday fashion. Nikki is a mom of four with a heart of gold. I loved talking with her about her plans for the business, about listening to your customers, knowing when to pivot, and connecting with local connections. She also has lovely things to say about empowerment, personal style and confidence.  I can’t wait for you to hear -- let’s dive right in. Episode Re-Release: NAT SHEHATA - founder, editor, and ecostylist of tommie magazine

Episode Re-Release: NAT SHEHATA - founder, editor, and ecostylist of tommie magazine

The star of this show is my pal Nat, the founder, editor, and ecostylist of tommie magazine. In this episode we talked about representation in fashion, conscious consumerism, tommie magazine where Nat is building a community with a conscience, and plus Nat’s amazing vintage finds! Looking back on this episode with Nat, I love what she had to say about individuality and expression in fashion. It really resonates with me after I’ve created around 30 of these episodes and talked with people who approach preloved with all their unique tastes, styles, and backgrounds. All as unique individuals.  Plus, as a little bonus, I asked Nat to give me her thoughts on preloved fashion, almost one year from when we originally recorded this. You’ll find that at the end.  This is such a beloved favorite, and I hope you’ll enjoy it whether this is the first time you’re tuning in or if you’re a long-term fan. Let’s dive in! She knows how to make everyone feel at home. You can really feel that on this episode. Labeled as the Peace Corps of fashion, Remake is a non-profit that believes that fashion can be a force for good. As I’m sure you know, this week is Fashion Revolution Week. Fashion Revolution Week is a global movement which falls on the anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, which killed 1138 people and injured many more on 24th April 2013. In honor of Fashion Revolution Week. Ayesha and I discuss how to use our purchasing power and our voice to make the invisible women who power the fashion industry visible. We talk about breaking up with fast fashion, and how to buy better, and of course for many of us -- that means buying pre-loved. To support its Mission, Remake takes influencers and future designers into garment maker communities around the world to meet the women who make our clothes face-to-face. Remake hope to build empathy across the fashion supply chain, inspiring the next generation to use their power to change the system for good. In this episode of Pre-Loved Podcast we discuss Remake’s newest film short film, Made in Mexico, a film in which we meet Olivia, Veronica, and Reina, the fierce women makers behind fast fashion labels that are made in Mexico.
