On today’s show, we’re chatting with Sierra, who started her secondhand clothing business, Tailored Thrift, while she was a sophomore in college. She wanted to bring a curated selection of vintage and secondhand to her college town – and what started as popups and markets turned into a brick-and-mortar store.  I loved hearing about how Sierra worked on her business, almost as a research project tackled alongside getting her fashion merchandising degree. She found that in her college town there was a large group of people who wanted to shop sustainable, but didn’t feel like digging through the racks to thrift their clothing.  We also shared stories of vintage shopping on travels – from Brimfield Market to the UK – and wild times at summer vintage markets in the Midwest.  I loved getting to hear from Sierra’s experience as a college student entrepreneur, and I know you will, too  – so, let’s dive right into it! On today’s show, we’re chatting with Anne and Nashalae. Anne Whiting is an upcycled fashion designer, sustainable fashion activist, and writer. She is also a longtime volunteer and mentor for young people with Free Arts NYC, an organization that provides arts programming for youth – including arts internship placements.  Through Free Arts NYC and her upcycled brand, Anne James New York, Anne has worked with several high school and college-aged interns teaching them about the pillars of sustainable fashion and upcycling. She loves helping her interns create their own capsule collections using NYC secondhand shops like Goodwill and BigReuse as their source materials.  So, she reached out to do an episode with one of her former interns, Nashalae Martin, and suggested we could chat about how Gen-Z and the next generations learn about sustainable fashion. Nashalae is a recent graduate of FIT, and has held several fashion-related internships, including with Anne and Anne James New York. Today’s episode is with Erin Beatty, the founder of Rentrayage, which is a sustainable fashion brand that creates one-of-a-kind garments with upcycled vintage garments and fabrics. Erin has many years of fashion industry experience, everywhere from Chanel to Nylon Magazine to Gap. In 2008, she co-founded SUNO, and even then, their inaugural collection was produced in Kenya from vintage Kanga fabrics.  After SUNO’s closing in 2016, Erin consulted with emerging brands until creating Rentrayage in 2019, rejecting the business-as-usual model and developing a way to reimagine what already exists; creating beauty and value from what has been discarded. Today’s episode is with Madelyn of Black Rabbit Vintage, based out of Benton Park in St. Louis. Madelyn has long been a vintage lover – she loves restoring old things to their former glory and passing on stories associated with vintage garments.  She says she’s been sewing for as long as she was allowed to touch a machine, and since high school she knew she wanted to own her own space – maybe vintage, maybe vinyl, maybe old books? But now, 15 years later she does it all! We hear her whole story with opening Black Rabbit Vintage on today’s show. Tragically, in late June, around when we filmed this, Madelyn learned that Sk8 Libourious, an indoor skate park and community center in North City was on fire – the destruction of this space was devastating in its own right, but it was also where Madelyn stored a large amount of Black Rabbit Vintage’s back store. Luckily, her storage room did not fully burn in the fire and she was able to get a majority of my things out of the building, but it has been a long restoration and recovery journey.  A journey which we talk about on today’s show – I also want to flag that there is a GoFundMe page for Black Rabbit’s recovery efforts linked in the shownotes, if you’re inclined to help out another vintage-lover.  All this and more in today’s episode,  so let’s just dive right in!
