The Expansion of Point of Care Testing | TWIRx
Special Guest
Pouria Sanae CEO of ixlayer
Dr. Kristin Tallent, PharmD - POCTalk Host
Point-of-care tests produce rapid, reliable results that aid in identification and monitoring of acute infections or chronic disease. POCT involves screenings and tests at or near the point of care, which produce actionable results within minutes.
In addition to dispensing and medication management, pharmacists are poised during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to provide preventive health services, including self-care recommendations and vaccinations.
Many pharmacists may also use “waived” testing as designated by the FDA’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) to detect and aid in their decisions of disease management.
Pharmacists have an excellent opportunity to further evolve their role via point-of-care testing (POCT), especially considering the pressure that COVID-19 has placed on the health care system. Proper training, certification, and advances in testing technology enable POCT to occur in any setting.

A Day in the Life of a Happier At Home Owner | Happier at Home PRN
Today I would like to focus on “A Day in the Life of a Happier At Home Owner”. The angle will be about how community pharmacy owners can manage this while operating their pharmacy businesses. Below are some questions for Marie to guide the conversation.
What are the factors that you considered when deciding to start you Happier At Home business? (ex/ wanting to build a business for yourself that builds equity, wanting to increase quality of care of your community, wanting independence and to earn financially without health insurance oversite)
Are you stuck in an office running your business? Focus here should be how you are a passive owner (as the pharmacy owners will be), and that you oversee and manage the administrative staff. That you are responsible for strategy for the growth of your company
You hired a qualified full-time employee to work in the business day to day?
As the VP of Training and Field Operations of the Happier At Home franchise, what characteristic have you seen in the pharmacy owners that may be a predictor to success? Ex/ being forward-thinking, entrepreneurial, following our processes
What types of activities does the Business Support Manager do? Can talk about day-to-day activities
Any closing advice or suggestions to our Community Pharmacy owners listening today? Perhaps can talk about your growth and that even though you were nervous about moving forward, you are glad that you did and for what reasons.

Get ready to deconstruct everything you’ve ever thought about the field of mental health and psychology. Today I’m honored to bring in the esteemed Holistic Physician, Restorative Coach, Podcaster, Psychiatrist Expert Witness at Welcome to Humanity - Dr. Fred Moss. Dr. Fred has been actively practicing in the mental health field internationally for over 40 years, and as a psychiatrist, has been an unwavering stand for the transformation of the prevailing, disempowering conversation that encompasses the industry globally. He is a firm believer that conversation, communication, creativity, and human connection are ultimately at the source of all healing of all conditions in all fields. Along with being a highly successful restorative/transformational coach, his signature technology, True Voice Podcasting is for people who are ready to take their lives back by speaking their authentic message into the world. Dr. Fred Moss, MD is the foremost expert on delivering your True Voice into the world so that it can heal. Your voice matters. Your voice can heal. More About Dr. Fred Dr. Fred Moss arrived on Earth on March 1, 1958, and from that very second has been earmarked to be a healer. The family he was born into was in chaos and, in many ways, was counting on his arrival to bring health and wellness back into balance. Little Freddy had his hands full, and over the next six decades, he has made it his business to bring healing to the world around him, not only to his family and friends but to the community and world at large. What a journey it has been. Dr. Fred has had a host of life experiences, including, among other things, being a 2-time college dropout and a Northwestern University Medical School graduate (1988). Over the last four decades, Dr. Fred has been firmly entrenched in the mental health system, first as a child care worker and then as an internationally well-known psychiatrist. In addition, Dr. Fred has had leadership roles in multiple modalities, including inpatient and outpatient, homeless shelters, nursing homes, orphanages, halfway houses, drug rehabilitation centers, home visits, prisons and jails, and telepsychiatry in many regions of the USA. Dr. Fred has been committed to the notion that communication, connection, creativity, and conversation are at the heart of all healing of all conditions of all types. Without this, people simply do not heal. With it, miracles regularly occur. Voices heal. Listening heals. We humans are best when we are connected to others, and Dr. Fred’s life mission has now become to assure that all people know that who they are and what they do matters and that their voice, no matter where they are from, or where they are going, can be heard. As the founder of the Welcome to Humanity movement, and the True Voice Podcasting Mastermind and methodology, Dr. Fred now finds himself making the difference he came here to make. TWIRx: Evolution of Clinical Trials & Community Pharmacy
The role pharmacists play in the community is the same one they should be playing in clinical research. Community-based clinical trials in general can be better for patient care, the pharmacy as a profession, and study sponsors who have long had trouble recruiting enough patients into their studies.
Within the next decade, Gerald Finken, founder and CEO of RxE2 predicts, pharmaceutical companies will no longer be running clinical trials that exclude pharmacy professionals because it will simply be too costly and overly risky.
When shipping drugs directly to patients, as has become customary with decentralized clinical trials (DCTs), many state pharmacy laws specifically stipulate that they follow the practice of pharmacy—which includes patient counseling and patient-specific labeling.
Today we talk about ‘The Evolution of Clinical Trials and the Pharmacist’s Role’

Capturing Community-Based Long-Term Care | Happier at Home PRN
o Overview of senior care marketplace, size, and shift to aging in place
o In just a few years, 132 million will be aged 50 in older. There are just over 330
million in the U.S. currently so that represents about 1/3 of our current total
population.
o It’s no surprise that seniors what to age in their own homes. What we’ve seen
through the COVID pandemic has accelerated this shift.
Nursing homes have been very hard hit; it has been vulnerable
population
We’ve been socially conditioned to stay at home
And advancements in technology have made that a bit easier. You are
even seeing in some areas Hospital care at home.
Family caregivers which are commonly in the sandwich generation are
teleworking or having flexibilities that allow them to be available for
caregiving more than in the past.
By 2035 – People over the age of 75 will reach 13.4 million
Now, for the next few years, we will see a dip in the number of patients aging
into LTC settings. If you check out this graph which looks at the US population
80 years of age or older, then you see we should see a shift before the baby
boomers hit SNF age.
Axios article:
https://www.axios.com/2023/01/12/more-in-home-care-options-risks
The pandemic-fueled boom in home care could be replicating one of the most worrisome hazards in institutional settings: bloodstream infections from central lines.
Driving the news: Home infusion therapy — whether for cancer drugs, antibiotics or other treatments — is becoming a preferred option for more patients.
"In the home, it's the patients, or sometimes a family member, sometimes a friend, or sometimes a neighbor that is basically doing the same work," she said.
That doesn't mean infection rates are higher outside the hospital, Keller said. “The best available data shows infections occur at a lower rate than in the hospital. But, because there are more and more people in home care, it is something we need to pay attention to,” Keller said.
