POCT involves screenings and tests at or near the point of care, which produce actionable results within minutes.  In addition to dispensing and medication management, pharmacists are poised during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to provide preventive health services, including self-care recommendations and vaccinations.  Many pharmacists may also use “waived” testing as designated by the FDA’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) to detect and aid in their decisions of disease management. Pharmacists have an excellent opportunity to further evolve their role via point-of-care testing (POCT), especially considering the pressure that COVID-19 has placed on the health care system. Proper training, certification, and advances in testing technology enable POCT to occur in any setting.

More About Dr. Fred Dr. Fred Moss arrived on Earth on March 1, 1958, and from that very second has been earmarked to be a healer. The family he was born into was in chaos and, in many ways, was counting on his arrival to bring health and wellness back into balance. Little Freddy had his hands full, and over the next six decades, he has made it his business to bring healing to the world around him, not only to his family and friends but to the community and world at large. What a journey it has been. Dr. Fred has had a host of life experiences, including, among other things, being a 2-time college dropout and a Northwestern University Medical School graduate (1988). Over the last four decades, Dr. Fred has been firmly entrenched in the mental health system, first as a child care worker and then as an internationally well-known psychiatrist. In addition, Dr. Fred has had leadership roles in multiple modalities, including inpatient and outpatient, homeless shelters, nursing homes, orphanages, halfway houses, drug rehabilitation centers, home visits, prisons and jails, and telepsychiatry in many regions of the USA. Dr. Fred has been committed to the notion that communication, connection, creativity, and conversation are at the heart of all healing of all conditions of all types. Without this, people simply do not heal. With it, miracles regularly occur. Voices heal. Listening heals. We humans are best when we are connected to others, and Dr. Fred’s life mission has now become to assure that all people know that who they are and what they do matters and that their voice, no matter where they are from, or where they are going, can be heard. As the founder of the Welcome to Humanity movement, and the True Voice Podcasting Mastermind and methodology, Dr. Fred now finds himself making the difference he came here to make. His years in the community, where he has been a physician to over 40,000 patients, and his storied and adventurous life traveling around the world, has now left him uniquely qualified to remind us all of what we already know. CNN and Forbes reported this week, January 30th - February 1st, through two different stories about a staffing issue due to a shortage of pharmacists throughout the country. The role pharmacists play in the community is the same one they should be playing in clinical research. Community-based clinical trials in general can be better for patient care, the pharmacy as a profession, and study sponsors who have long had trouble recruiting enough patients into their studies.   Within the next decade, Gerald Finken, founder and CEO of RxE2 predicts, pharmaceutical companies will no longer be running clinical trials that exclude pharmacy professionals because it will simply be too costly and overly risky.   When shipping drugs directly to patients, as has become customary with decentralized clinical trials (DCTs), many state pharmacy laws specifically stipulate that they follow the practice of pharmacy—which includes patient counseling and patient-specific labeling.   Today we talk about ‘The Evolution of Clinical Trials and the Pharmacist’s Role’

You are even seeing in some areas Hospital care at home.  Family caregivers which are commonly in the sandwich generation are teleworking or having flexibilities that allow them to be available for caregiving more than in the past.  By 2035 – People over the age of 75 will reach 13.4 million  Now, for the next few years, we will see a dip in the number of patients aging into LTC settings.
