Ep183 - Help! My dog hates strangers coming over [Q&A]
Janelle asks and Panos answers:
"I have a question about our (maybe) Terrier Cross 'Frankie' approx 5 years old adopted from Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter 4 years ago.
He HATES strangers, which is OK, but now that my kids are teens (11 and 13) they're wanting to have their friends sleepover at our house and it isn't going well.
I have muzzle trained him for everyone's safety, I keep him when muzzled when kids friends are around. But once he sees the "stranger" in our house he bolts towards the growling/barking and sometimes snaps at them.
I have tried greeting kids friends on mutual territory before they come into house. I've told the friends to completely ignore our dog like he doesn't exist.
But honestly it's scary for the friends, and once they squeal or run, it's worse.
Besides putting our dog in another room when we have people over. Do you have any suggestions so everyone can co-exist safely?"

Panos offers a few different perspectives of how to pick your battles when training & living with your dog.
Topics include:
What will today's session cover?
How to handle certain aggressive behaviours?
Is this particular adversive situation necessary for my dog to experience?
How should you deal with a conflict with a client?
Some battles are worth fighting, others aren't.

A week off sometimes has great benefits, not an excuse to stop training, exercising or playing with your dog, but a nuanced perspective of what makes a skill develop.

The greater the expectation, the greater the disappointment.
Panos discusses many different factors relating to expectations and how it influences your training & overall life with your dog.
Along with some tips, ideas and life philosophy a few questions for you, the listener to ponder on:
What did you think owning your dog will be like?
What's the expectations you have that have resulted in both big wins and big losses?
What are your expectations of the clients you see (if you're a trainer) or the trainer you want to employ (if you are the dog owner)?

Ep176 - Dr Michelle Rassool
This week Dr Michelle Rassool joined us to discuss the behavioural side of veterinary practice. We touched on the medication of dogs for behavioural issues and examples where medicines may or may not be the most appropriate answer.
Dr Michelle has always had a strong, practical interest in animal behaviour, spending her early days working and training horses, and later becoming passionate about dog training, before starting her journey to become a vet. She has spent hundreds of hours of training with both her own, and client’s dogs.
As a vet, Michelle aims to bridge the gap between trainers and veterinarians, creating an open dialogue to support her clients and their pets through behavioural issues. She is focused on preventative behavioural care, from the first puppy visit to senior checks, and work hard to create positive experiences for pets in clinic from the day she meets them.

Ep175 - Andrej Popovic from Zver Canine
This week's episode was a great discussion about Andrej's involvement in breeding, what is involved and the intention of each litter along with the responsibility that comes with it.
Andrej's current GSD litter are specifically bred for working & sporting roles, some may be a pet dog, however adequate screening will determine the best home for a high drive working dog.
This brought us to other topics such as what is dog sport training, questioning Adopt Don't Shop mantras, how dogs influence our mental health and more.

Ep174 - Be animated! (Panos’ first ever advice he got as a dog trainer)
Panos shares a story about the advice Margaret, the agility trainer, gave to Panos that has stuck with him over all the years!
Being calm and assertive is ok and appropriate at times, however, being animated, girly baby voice is also very handy in other parts of your training.
Have fun with your dog and don't let your ego get bruised, if you need to motivate your dog by being animated, let it go and give it a go. While others need to chill a little and take it down a few notches, lol!

Ep173 - Are dogs being over-medicated?
This week we pick apart somewhat of a controversial topic in the dog training industry - sedative / anti-depressant medicines and their possible overuse.
Unfortunately we have noticed an uptick in clients who have been advised (by some trainers and/or vets) very quickly to medicate their dogs without first trying any behavioural interventions.
Why are some trainers and/or vets going about things in this way? And in what scenarios are behavioural medications actually a good decision?

It's important to consider all the factors in this situation as it's not just one thing that is creating this behaviour issue.

Ep166 - Genetics vs Environment (Nature vs Nurture)
You are the shepherd, not the engineer of your dog's behaviour.
Any individual is a mosaic of their extended family.
Panos & Luke discuss the roles genetics and environment (innate and learnt behaviour) play in what creates a behaviour, temperament and mindset.
Environment brings forth genetic expression and it's potential, this relates to type/level of drive, temperament, health, social behaviours, anxiety and aggression to name a few.
It's not only training that develops a behaviour, it is also the DNA of your dog.

Ep162 - Anthropomorphism
Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics or behaviour to a god, animal, or object.
In dog training, it typically refers to attributing human emotions, behaviours, or characteristics onto our furry friends (perhaps, even, our "fur babies").
What are the potential consequences of this? A dog is not a human - treating them as such can have negative implications for the relationship between an owner and their dog.

Ep152 - Gary ”Gaz” Jackson: Exposing the Extremists in the Dog Training Industry
We had the privilege to have a very interesting conversation with Gary about his 40 years of experience in the dog training industry and some fascinating stories that have come with it.This lead to a discussion of certain 'extremists' that threaten our industry on many levels, and you may find it surprising the conclusion Gaz has come to after all these years being a service to dogs and our community.
Gaz Jackson has trained in excess of 20,000 dogs in obedience, protection, or detection, supplying canine and handler training to police, army, prisons, air force, and state and federal agencies internationally. Gaz has conducted several law enforcement dog training seminars with international speakers and patrons.
Gaz is an international speaker conducting seminars, events, workshops, and lectures, training handlers and trainers around the world in all aspects of dog training.
Gaz now works full time as an author and speaker around Australia and overseas and provides dog training private lessons, seminars and workshops.
What’s most impressive about Gaz Jackson is the number of things he’s achieved through dog training:
1st Megafauna Fossil detection Dog
• 1st Bio Archaeology Dog
• 1st Quoll Detection Dog
• 1st and 2nd Koala Detection Dog
• Trained the world’s youngest Narcotic Dog at 11 weeks of age

Ep150 - Resource Guarding
Resource guarding is when a dog is displaying aggressive behaviour (growling and/or biting) to protect their valued resource (food, bones, toys, items and sometimes significant other- dog or person).
This can be a very dangerous situation even though it is quite a natural behaviour and can range from fairly harmless to severe aggression.
Panos discusses some different variations of resource guarding, how it develops, how to maintain it but does not cover any remedy to this as advice on aggression over a podcast is not appropriate.
Seek professional help in person if you need to address this behaviour in your dog.

Ep148 - You Get What You Reward (Are You Reinforcing The Wrong Behaviours?)
One of the most important concepts we try to help our dog training clients understand is that dogs will continue to display whatever behaviours that are rewarded.
This includes desirable and undesirable behaviours, and it seems that a lot of dog owners may not understand the ways in which they are accidentally or unintentionally rewarding (reinforcing) certain behaviours in their dogs...

Ep147 - Preparing Your Dog For Kennel Boarding
Panos answers a question that came in from Holly asking how to help prepare her dog or future puppy for boarding/kennelling.
A few things to consider such as early crate training, finding a reputable boarding facility, dog minding in a professionals home, pet sitting or family and friends if appropriate.
There can be many reasons why your dog finds being boarded a stressful experience.
Panos sheds some light from personal experience working in different boarding facilities along with minding dogs in his home for many years.
Being proactive is always best and hope this episode helps you make the right choice for you and your dog.

Ep146 - People Who Shouldn’t Own A Dog
This is a touchy subject for some people, but the currently overflowing dog shelters post-pandemic are testament to the fact that far too many people own dogs without giving it enough thought in the first place.

Ep145 - Learn To Love The Process Of Dog Training
Truth is, most people don't like to train their dogs... It is a thing that they feel they must do to 'fix' their dog's problem behaviour.
This may be true, but training your dog is about developing a mindset, skillset to ensure they're living their best life.
Training is play, work and duty.
Training is what allows our dog's to thrive.
Set your expectations, love the process and accept your duty to your dog.

Ep140 - Why Discipline = Freedom
In dog training, how do we define discipline? How do we define freedom?
Freedom and liberty comes with its own cost.
Obedience training gives your dog the freedom to experience more and gain more access to the world.
Off leash privileges come with a high level of reliable obedience and socialisation.
The same concepts of discipline apply to dogs as they do to humans; that is to say, exercising self discipline allows us to gain more from our lives.

Ep139 - Dogs Live In The NOW
Another episode talking about the lessons our dogs teach us.
Panos discusses how dogs help us gain perspective, allow us to heal and to be living more in the moment.
It's Panos' passion to live by the saying, "I teach dogs to live in our society, Dogs teach us to live in the NOW."
This week's episode was prompted by a conversation Panos had with a good friend, Jaime, and was not a planned episode, more of a verbal download straight from Panos' mind to get it off his chest, hope you find it relevant.

Ep137 - Adding A New Dog To Your Home? (When Is It A Good Idea?)
Panos was asked a question about what should be considered when adding an extra dog to your household.
This isn't an episode about how to assess and match your dog with a new prospective pooch.
It is more about assessing your own life and the timing of it all.
Setting emotions aside and consider some rational pointers before committing is always wise.
Ps. If you are getting or have a new puppy, search for 'PUPPIES 101' to get multiple episodes relating specifically to puppy development and training.

Ep136 - Brittany ”The Pet Girl”: Why Prong Collar Bans Will Affect Us All
This week Brittany of "The Pet Girl" joined us via zoom, generously giving her time and expertise on the current state of prong collar bans in the state of Queensland Australia
We also discussed Brittany's extensive past as a dog trainer, and how she is always on the search to further her own development as a dog industry professional
From Brittany's website:
"If you asked me 6 years ago what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I had absolutely no idea; I just knew that animals HAD to be a part of it.
As a long time dog owner, I had always taken a responsible approach to my dogs’ health and wellbeing, opting for a more natural approach to their lifestyle and more specifically their diets.
I found that I was always asking questions beyond the norm and I quickly realised that a lot of the questions I was asking, nobody really knew the answers to. The more I researched and learnt, the more I wanted to share, and this is how The Pet Girl came about.
My goal is to help pet parents be informed and smart about pet ownership and do the very best they can. I want to create a generation of pet parents that value having fit, healthy and confident pets that not only survive through life, but absolutely THRIVE.

Ep135 - Your Dog’s Balls (Not Those Ones)
Panos answers a question from Nellie in regards to what to do when she is playing fetch with her dog when another dog approaches and her dog causing a scene.
There are a few remedies to this situation, prevention being the best cure. But the most important thing is, when your rewarding your dog with the ball, you should not allow anyone to take that reinforcement away. It is a 2 player game (you and your dog).
Good management, advocating for your dog and executing a plan is the best way forward.
