86. The Uber of Lashes is Here and Erin Branche Comes on Our Show To Talk About It
One of the exciting parts of our job is meeting new people who are doing interesting things, and today we are excited to have Erin Branche of Lash Bash come on our podcast to talk about her new venture. She has created an app that connects lash artists with clients who want to have services in their homes. She is starting this service in the fall and will be launching in her home town of Philidelphia first. BTW...if you are in the Philly area and are looking for work you should check out her service. It might be a great way to launch your lash career. One of the reasons we ask lash entrepreneurs to come on our show is to hopefully inspire you to think outside the box. Most last artists think that the next thing one can do after doing lashes for a while is start a product line or become a trainer...but there are a lot more opportunities out there that. I always tell people to try to find something you are passionate about and then see if there is any way for you to combine your lash expertise with it. For me, I've produced a lot of events over my lifetime so it made sense or me to produce our lash conference. In Erin's case, it was to create an app that helps lash artists. I hope after you listen to this episode, you'll start to think of what you offer to the lash world. 84. Ted Gipson & Jason Backe Discuss Reopening Their Salon Despite State Shutdown Orders
Salons around the world have been mispresented, misunderstood and plain out ignored during this Covid-19 crises. The beauty industry has been hurt immensely with all the mandatory shutdowns, and as a result, sadly we know quite a few salons have decided to just call it quits. In California, salons were ordered to shut down again in early July and now are only allowed to provide services outdoors. We are blessed to have Jason Backe and Ted Gipson join us in the LashCast studios to talk about their reopening a couple of weeks ago where they decided to defy the governor's orders to stay closed. This was not an easy choice for them, but they felt as leaders in the beauty industry it was important to do this to hopefully draw attention to this gross injustice. If your salon is currently closed, we hope you'll be encouraged and inspired by what they are doing. As an added bonus, we discuss their new salon model that has turned the traditional salon on its head. They opened their salon "STARRING by Ted Gipson" last year and it has laid down a new blueprint on what a salon experience should look like. 81. M'Lisa and Royal of Spa Strong Are Here to Help You with Client Boundaries
Do you struggle with having boundaries with your clients? Now I know some of you might say you have no issue, but over my 15 years of working with beauty pros, I'd say one of the biggest issues I see we struggle with are boundaries. We got into the beauty industry because we like to make people happy and because we don't learn anything about managing clients in beauty school, we tend to get walked all over when we start our career. Sadly some of us still struggle even after working in this industry for years. In fact, some of you might even be resentful of your clients or might be nearing burnout. Today we have beauty coaches M'Lisa and Royal Ellis of Spa Strong join us to talk about how you can have healthy boundaries in your business.M'Lisa published a book called "Boundaries in Esthetics", and we discuss how command presence will help you improve your interactions with your clients, how adding the value is a great way to empower you to raise your prices, and how you want to attract "quality clients" over "quantity clients". We had a great time learning from M'Lisa and Royal, and I know you will too. When you get done with this episode go to the link below and get a copy of M'Lisa's book. 80. Mike and Shauna of LivBay Lash Share About Their New Virtual Reality Lash Training
In the last five months, most of us have had to rethink our year as well as how we want to do business. While it's been a scary time, companies are being forced to think outside the box if they want to survive. While most of us don't like change, change is being forced upon us whether we want it or not. Mike and Shauna of LivBay Lash had to temporarily close their chain of lash salons as well as their training program when Covid-19 hit, and they really had to think how could they continue to make money (while still paying their collective lease payment of $50,000 a month). While thinking of their options, they came up with the idea of offering virtual lash training using the Oculus Virtual Reality setup. Mike and Shauna posted this new development on their social media feed a month ago, and I immediately contacted them asking them to come on our podcast. Thankfully they said yes. In this episode, Mike and Shauna share a little about the unique struggles they have endured with the COVID-19 crises and give us the deets on their new exciting virtual reality training. On top of this, they drop one huge bit of news that you will have to listen to the podcast to find out. This project they are working on will have a huge impact on our industry. One of my hopes with this episode is that you'll be encouraged and inspired to look at your business and think outside the box. 79. Sarah Maxwell Talks About the Art of Subtlety and Working with a Celebrity Clientele
For many of us, when we got into beauty we dreamed of the day where Beyonce (or whoever your favorite celebrity is) would walk into your business and get lashes from you. To be able to serve high-end clients and charge top dollar is something we all hope to achieve one day. Today Sarah Maxwell, owner of Sarah Maxwell Beauty, joins us and gives us a peek of what it's like to serve an exclusive clientele. Sarah has been doing lashes since 2008 and has built a business serving clients most lash artists dream of having. In this episode, we talk about how high-end clients generally want a subtle look and not the volume look we all see on Instagram. Yes, volume has a place in this world, but if you want to attract a more refined customer, learning the art of subtlety is a must-have skill. She also discusses why she's okay doing lash fills on other lash artists' work, how she struggled with boundaries with clients wanting to be friends and not giving in to the pressure to open up a lash salon. We could have gone on for two hours with Sarah...lot's of great content. I'm sure you'll enjoy hearing from Sarah and how she built her business. On top of a slowed-down economy, most people didn't even know what lash extensions were and there was no Instagram to help us to affordably market our business (yes we lived in the stone ages). While it wasn't easy, we found a way to grow our business in the midst of the recession. Even though the cards were stacked against us, we grew our little salon and even hired our first staff during the recession. We tried all sorts of ways to promote the salon...some worked well and others...not so well. In this webinar, we will break down and share all the marketing tricks and promotions that worked and got our salon to grow into being a 7-digit award-winning in Southern California. When you are done, you'll be equipped with many new strategies and ideas that you can implement in your business. BTW...most of them have nothing to do with Instagram. WE WANT TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ON THE PODCASTIf you have a question and you want us to answer it, please email it to [email protected] or DM us at @lashcastpodcast. 78. Dr. Stout Shares How Your Clients Can Be Allergic to the Lash Glue and Still Keep Their Lashes
Tired of losing clients to the lash allergy? We have some good news for you! You need to check out our podcast today where we have Dr. Warren Stout, our unofficial medical director, talk about all things lashes, and the biggest truth bomb he shares is how your clients can be allergic to the glue and still keep their lashes. If you have been doing lashes for a while, you have had a client eventually contact you and tell you that their eyes are puffy and itchy. This problem has plagued us since lash extensions started 16 years ago. If you go to a Facebook Group, you'll hear all sorts of advice: use clear glue, use a sensitive glue, take Benedryl. While some clients will see some improvement with these solutions...if you have been doing lashes long enough, you know these solutions are not 100% effective. In this episode, Dr. Stout shares how you can now 99% of the time have a solution that will work with your allergic clients. If you have been frustrated by this issue, this episode will be a huge relief. Dr. Stout also discusses how dangerous cyanoacrylate glue is and shares if the "seasonal lash loss" is real or not. 74. Q&A Episode: We Talk About Products You Can Sell In Your Salon And How To Choose A Volume Class
We get hit up all the time with questions on how you can improve your lash game or run your business better. We love to answer questions because when we got started in 2005, there was no one to ask. That said, we still run into lash artists who feel there is no one out there to help them...thus why we started our podcast. In this episode, we get through three questions...First, we answer the question of what are some product ideas that businesses can sell outside of the usual growth serums and lash washes. Adding new products to your store will help to keep your product sales energized all year. We share some of our favorites. Next, we talk about what you should be looking for in a volume trainer. We share some tips on what we have looked for when we have taken classes. Lastly, we answer the question, what are some signs your lash technique is improving. I hope you find our answers helpful! 73. CPA April McDaniel Shares Tax Tips And What Red Flags The IRS Looks For
Tax season is coming up and this can be a scary time for many of us. And why is it scary? Because maybe you don't really know how to set up your business correctly, and you know that if you were to be audited, the IRS would most likely find out you still owe them money...and now with penalties and interest. Or worse maybe you have been intentionally cheating on your taxes and you know if you were to be audited, there's no way you to hide the illegal deductions or unreported income. Tax season can be a scary time for beauty professionals but it doesn't have to be. In this episode, we talk to April McDaniel, a CPA with Kopsa Otte. April and her team help beauty businesses like yours to pay the least amount of taxes over time so you can save money and also get better sleep at night not worrying about the IRS.April sits down with us and shares things you should or should not write off on your taxes. She also goes into some red flags that the IRS looks for in businesses that are cutting corners on their taxes. You don't need to be afraid of the IRS if you do your taxes right. Aside from not stressing about the IRS, April goes into some other benefits of reporting all your income that you might not have thought of. We hope you'll be encouraged by this episode to get a bookkeeper as well as a CPA so that you can keep your company in compliance with the IRS and so you can build a financially sound business. 72. Ashlee Rouge Shares the Temptation She Had to Hide Her Identity & How Lash Brands Lack Diversity
We saw a brave post by Ashlee Rouge of Lashout Xpress last year where she shared about how she and a friend don't see a lot of black lash artists being represented in our industry by lash brands. From there she explained how she has had doubts about her ability to run her own business because some clients won't want to see her because she's black. It was a brutally honest post that shows how racism affects black lash artists in our industry. Ashlee decided to repost this IGTV this week in light of the George Floyd murder and the ensuing protests (Go to @lashoutxpress to see it). When we saw it again, we felt that it was time to sit down and talk about race, and these issues Ashlee brought up on her Instagram page. We were blown away with how loving and understanding Ashlee is even when faced with racism and bigotry. She is an amazing woman who we are so grateful to have on our show and bring light to things many of us probably didn't even know about. We learned a lot from Ashlee, and we are sure you will too. In this podcast, we don't try to solve the world's problems but we do feel a responsibility to improve our lash industry. Racism is a sensitive but important topic, and we hope you'll see we just want to see our industry grow in a way where it becomes more inclusive and more loving. 71. Four Misconceptions Lash Artists Have With Lash Glue
Have you ever wondered can I burn my client with my lash glue? Does my glue possibly cause cancer? If my client's lashes get wet, will that cause them to fall out more quickly? There is a lot of misinformation on lash glue on the interwebs and in today's episode, we cover 4 misconceptions lash stylists often have about lash glue. While you might be new to cyanoacrylate glue, this glue is not new to the world...its been around for decades. Lash salons are slowly opening back up all over the world, but you are still stuck waiting for your chance to reopen. Since you have a lot of time to think about what's going to happen, your mind might have gone to the dark side and wondered, "Will all my clients return? Did a lot of them lose their jobs? Did they find a cheaper lash artist?" It can be dangerous to have a lot of time on your hands. We reached out to you our listeners who have opened their salons and asked if you could share how it has been going so far.I know it's a scary time, but we are so excited to share this episode with you as the news from the front line is super encouraging. Lash Boss's are raising their prices with no issues, clients are returning in swarms, new clients are calling to get in and two salons who reached out to us are looking to hire more staff. 69. Let's Get Your Salon Ready To Reopen
PLEASE NOTE: For the time being we are recording these episodes while doing an Instagram Live on Thursdays at 6pm (PST) and we are taking the audio and making a podcast from them. Congratulations! Your state or county has given you the green light to open up. How are you feeling about this? Are you concerned it's too soon...too late? Are your clients scared to come back? Have your clients left you to see other lash artists who do home visits? You shut down your business in March thinking you'd be back in 2 weeks and now it's been 2 months. No one saw this coming. So much has changed and the way we do lashes has changed too. Change can be scary and difficult. What if my clients don't return? What if I get sick? What if a client gets sick from coming to my salon...am I liable? So many questions and so many unknowns. In this episode, we want to talk about things you can do to set up your business for success during the Covid-19 crises. You are not alone! Grab a pen and paper as we'll be giving you a lot of information. Now if you are not a big note taker, we want to make it easier for you to get this information and use it. We created a PDF that lays out everything. All you need to do is go to our IG page and go to the link in the bio. Once there, you'll see a button labeled "GET READY TO OPEN YOUR SALON". Click on it, give us your email, and we'll send you the PDF.In this list, you'll get a lot of ideas you can do to make your salon feel safer for your team and clients. Please don't just look at our ideas and implement them without also checking your government officials to see what their requirements are. You need to be compliant with your city, county, and state recommendations. Please do not only look at our list and set up your salon. You need to do your due diligence. Please join us every Thursday at 6pm (PST) on our IG @lashcastpodcast for all the latest updates and info you need during this COVID-19 crises. PLEASE NOTE: For the time being we are aiming to record an Instagram Live Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm (PST) and we are taking the audio from these lives and making a podcast from them. Welcome to Day 43 of the LashCast Lockdown! You can see light at the end of the tunnel and it looks like we will be working again soon in our salons...in fact maybe you are already back at work. Finally, we can begin to make some money again. When we talk to some lash stylists, we keep hearing a trend that has us a little concerned. Some lash stylists feel they need to offer a discount when their clients come back. Say it isn't so Joe or Betty or whatever you name is. In this episode, we cover why discounting your service now is not the right strategy. In fact, what you really need to think about is raising your prices. We do get a little "mathy" in this episode but when you are done listening, you'll know how to calculate what your costs per hour are and what you need to charge so you can make a 15% profit with every month. We also explain how you should raise your prices in the coming days. It's not as hard as you think. PLEASE NOTE: For the time being we are aiming to record an Instagram Live Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm (PST) and we are taking the audio from these lives and making a podcast from them. We will be doing this for as long as we can or until the virus scare is over. 54. Day 1 Quarantine - Daily Updates, Tips, Encouragement And Fun To Get You Through This Crazy Time
So much has changed in the last 2 weeks and things keep changing daily for all of us. A lot of us now seem to have a lot of time at home all of a sudden. During this difficult time, it's going to get easier and easier for us to panic and get scared...which is normal when everything we know just got turned upside down. The key is to not let all this change and bad news completely undue you. It's okay to be scared and it's okay to cry or be upset that all of our lives as lash artists have been put on hold. That's a very natural and human thing to do. We just don't want our community to get stuck in their fear and be paralyzed. Strange enough this can be a very exciting time to learn, grow and make new plans for the future. So we decided to start recording an Instagram Live every day at 6 pm (PST) with a hope to share encouraging news, business and lash tips and anything else we think would be fun. We just want to give our listeners something positive, uplifting and hopefully fun to listen who while we spend most of our time at home. We have been doing this IG live for 5 days now and now we are taking that recording and putting it on our podcast too. We plan to do the IG every day but we may not post a podcast every day...just depends on the time that I have. We'll see how we hold up. I hope you enjoy our little time and please share this with your friends if you find it helpful. We really need your support to get the word out. Thank you and happy listening!Paul & TussaneeANNOUNCEMENTS:WE WANT TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ON THE PODCASTIf you have a question and you want us to answer it, please email it to [email protected] or DM us at @lashcastpodcast. 53. Interview With The Very Creative Eyelashtina
Today we have the pleasure of sharing a short interview we did with Christina Ballstaedt (better known as @eyelashstina) back in June of 2019 at the IBS show in Vegas. In this interview, we give you a little peek into Christina's life and how she grew into the amazing lash artist she is today. This is a very short interview so we will need to have her come back sometime soon.Christina has a lot to offer our industry and over the past few years, she has been helping lash stylist with her "Social Design" course she offers. We have talked to quite a few lash artists who have taken the class and they all told us that this class was a favorite of theirs. Christina really understands design and has a passion to help other lash artists get the right tools so they too can make social media posts that will help you attract new clients. 52. We Talk About Premade Fans and Why We Love Them
Today we dive deep into the world of premade fans. Some people love them...some people hate them...and we're here to say "Can't we all just get along?" As with anything new, there will be people (early adopters) who jump on board right away and there will be others who will question new developments and wonder if this will damage lashes. (Remember when volume was new and many had similar concerns?)After playing with premade fans for two years, Tussanee shares her insights on what she thinks about premade fans and whether or not they are a good thing or a bad thing. We know there are a lot of concerns out there over premade fans. What if someone never takes volume training and starts to apply premade fans...are they in a sense cheating? Are volume trained artists wasting their money now since they can just use premades? Do premade fans cause damage and are they less ideal since you can't really custom make fans for clients? We talk about all these concerns and more in this episode. As always please let us know what you think by going to our Instagram page and posting a comment in this episode's post. We love to hear from you even if you disagree with us. :)GUEST ANNOUNCER INFO:Ilona Alidzaevahttps://revolashion.com/IG: @revolashionANNOUNCEMENTS:LASHCRUISE IS COMINGJoin us on March 27-30, 2020 as we set sail from Long Beach, Ca for a 3-day cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. 51. Malaena Kelson Talks About Dealing With Pain From Lashing
Today we sit down with Malaena Kelson of Lash Happy Club and The Lash Wrap and talk about one of the biggest issues in our industry: body aches we get from lashing. If you have been lashing for a while, then you know at some point your body will start to feel it. Lashing looks like a very relaxing chill kind of job, but it can be very hard on our bodies if we don't take care of them.Another problem we talk about is how so many lash artists don't even talk about the pain they get from lashing. They just suffer in silence and dream of a day they no longer do lashes. Malaena shares that you don't need to live this way anymore, and her new company Lash Happy Club is here to help lash artists take care of themselves so they can continue to do lashes without the quality of life taking a major dip. We recorded this episode last June at the IBS show in Vegas so we didn't have a lot of time to really talk about this issue...so we hope to have her back again later this year and dig a little deeper into this important issue that every lash artist deals with. 50. New Year's Episode & Tips On Goal Setting
As we enter into 2020, the only way you are going to make things happen in your business is by being intentional with your time. You need to focus...and the only way to get that focus is to have goals. Each year we set goals and we want to share some of the things that have worked for us. In this episode, you'll learn what SMART goals are. Too many times we set goals that are too hard to reach (I want to lose 150 pounds) or are more like wishes (I'd like to make more money). We talk about how you need to make goals that are measurable, achievable and can get done in a period of time. Learning how to set goals correctly will help to set you up for success. We also talk about some fun tools we have used to make goals like vision boards and time capsules. On a more personal note, Paul and Tussanee share a little about how they almost got divorced 13 years ago. This talk wasn't in our show prep and we almost edited it out...But, we decided to keep it in the show just in case there was someone listening who might be going through a hard time in their marriage. We hope you'll find our story encouraging. After you listen to this episode please let us know what you think about it. Please DM us or email us your thoughts. 48. Sheila Bella Shares About The Struggles Of Running A Business And The Power Of Belief
We were invited this last summer to meet Sheila Bella at her PMU office in North Hollywood and talk shop. We have been friends for a while online, but we had never had to chance to hang out and really connect with her until now. In this episode, we talk about the struggles of running a beauty business, training your competition, who not to hire when you are interviewing potential staff, and our favorite part of our conversation was when we talked about the power of believing in others and how that gift can change people's lives. If you own a beauty business or are thinking about hiring in the future, you will find this episode to be very encouraging and helpful. If you are not already following Sheila on IG @realsheilabella or following her Pretty Rich Podcast you need to stop right now and do that. Sheila is one of the bright lights in our industry empowering women to achieve their goals and dreams. Aside from running a 7 figure PMU business, she coaches other beauty business owners, speaks at conferences and is hosting her first-ever PMU conference: Pretty Ambitious Summit. While Shiela's focus is on the PMU universe, the truths she passes out are useful for any woman no matter what business they are in. We hope you enjoy this episode and please leave us feedback or DM us at @lashcastpodcast to let us know what you learned or if you enjoyed the episode. 47. Erika's Life After Integrity Lash Closed
In this episode, our very own Erika changes roles and allows us to interview her. We talk about what it was like for her as an employee to go through a salon closing and how her mindset really made this big change for her go smoother than one would expect. She also shares about her transition into being a business owner and how she came up with the new name for her business. Erika also discusses her change of scenery that is coming this February and how we will be moving forward with LashCast when we are no longer neighbors. Paul and Tussanee shared their side of the story when they closed Integrity Lash back in May and now you'll get to hear another perspective to this life-changing event that happened to us. We also discuss how people can be selected to be a speaker at Lashcon 2020 and we share details about two new initiatives we are working on; LashCruise and Beauty Scouts. If you went to LashCon this is a must listen and if you missed it, you'll get a little peek on what you missed. 45. Holiday Ideas For Your Business, Clients And Staff
Since the holidays are upon us we decided to share some of the things we did at our salon over the last 13 years to make this special time of the year more fun and profitable. We share decorating ideas, gift card tips and how you can use this season to show appreciation to your clients and staff. We also answer a question submitted to us by one of our listeners...today we share how we go about raising our prices. We raised our prices a few years ago four times in 2 years and almost lost no clients in the process. If you handle the price increase correctly, you'll make more money and by far retain the majority of your clients. 44. We Talk to Courtney Buhler About the Ulta Deal That We Think is a Huge Win for the Lash Industry
Courtney returns to the LashCast studios to talk about the huge deal between Ulta Beauty and Sugarlash Pro. At first glance, some lash stylists might feel this will hurt our industry or they might feel envious of the deal...but we feel this deal is an amazing opportunity for not just Sugarlash Pro but for our whole industry. Paul and Tussanee break down why they think this will actually open up more doors for all of us in the lash industry. We also discuss some of the details of the deal and how sometimes even when you hear a "no" as an entrepreneur, that is really when the work begins. Courtney goes into detail how she turned a "no" from Ulta into a "yes" by sheer grit and determination. While we all wish all our ideas would take off and be a huge success, Courtney also shares about one of her failures from last year when Sugarlash Pro launched a salon franchise idea and it didn't quite take off the way they had hoped. There is so much good stuff in this episode...much more than just a PR announcement about blockbuster deal in our industry. 43. Interview With Cheryl Peng - Finding Your Why And Pursuing Happiness
Cheryl Peng of Untamed Artistry joins us today in our LashCast Studios, and we are so excited to share this interview for you. Cheryl is launching her own lash brand, and she isn't starting it because she thinks there aren't any good lash brands currently on the market. Cheryl chose to start a lash brand because of her "why". You see, Cheryl is a lash nerd (We say that lovingly and it's what she calls herself) and she started her brand because she didn't feel she connected with any of the current brands on the market. She felt there was a need for a lash brand for her fellow lash nerds...thus Untamed Artistry was born (we are nerds ourselves so we are very excited to see her launch this brand). In this episode, we talk about making sure your brand is aligned with your "why" and Cheryl shares her philosophy on how she has learned to pursue her happiness instead of just things she was good at. Cheryl also shares some of her "unpopular opinions" (like giving away free training) that would make @lashbase_jamie proud. We had a great time hanging out with Cheryl, and we are sure you'll enjoy getting to know this quirky lash boss. 42. Why Patch Testing Doesn't Work And Can We All Agree To Stop Charging Less?
Today we take on two topics we see discussed on Instagram and in Facebook groups: patch testing and price-fixing.We have been doing lashes for over 15 years and have worked with some of the top doctors in Southern California to figure out what is going on with the cyanoacrylate glue allergy. While patch testing sounds like a great idea, we go into why it really doesn't help you find out who is allergic to the glue and worse it can actually destroy the trust you have with your client. We also discuss why trying to get everyone to agree to not charge below a certain dollar amount is the wrong strategy in making you more money in your business. It really doesn't matter if other lash stylists are charging less than you...what you need to focus on is giving your client the best value so you can charge double what your competition charges. We also answer 2 questions from a listener and we start a new segment where Erika reads your reviews. Please DM us your feedback and leave us a review!ANNOUNCEMENTSLASHCONWe are excited to launch LashCon, the first-ever business-only focused lash conference where you'll learn how to better run your business in a more efficient and effective way.You have worked hard to build your lash skills become a great lash stylist; now it’s time to become a great business owner too. This conference is for solo artists, salon owners, future salon owners, managers, and leaders. 41. Things You Are Doing Wrong In Your Business
One of the things we like to say is "you don't know what you don't know". When we say that, we just mean it's easy to doing something wrong and because of your lack of experience or knowledge, you just have no clue what you are doing is actually not the best thing. This happens all the time when we are running our businesses. That is why decided to do this episode. Each one of us came up with one thing that we observe people doing in their businesses that isn't the best practice. We talk about why posting on your Instagram page the statement "not taking new clients" is hurting you, and we discuss why you should not be trying to find clients who are like you. Since it's been a while that we talked about lash styling, Tussanee makes an observation about lashes that will help you improve your lash retention. Once you are done listening to our episode, please write us a review and DM or email us your thoughts. We'd love to hear from you.Happy listening!
