In an industry where most of us spend the majority of our time working alone in a room, this is a podcast where you can learn, be encouraged, be inspired and make connections with other lash and beauty professionals.
137. CEO of Harmon Brothers, Benton Crane, Discusses Marketing and Messaging
When Tussanee first got into business, she thought all she needed to do was be a great lash artist. Quickly she realized that she also needed to be a great salesperson, marketer, janitor, and horse wrangler (we'll explain the horse thing another time). Just being great at lashes was not enough to grow her business to a 7 figure lash salon...she's learned as I'm sure you have, you need to wear many hats (I prefer top hats as they are very pleasant to wear while I walk around town inspecting people's gardens for flees...Okay I've gone off the rails a little today...my apologies). In today's episode, we are excited to have Benton Crane, the CEO of The Harmon Brothers, join us in the LashCast studios. If you don't know who the Harmon Brothers are that's okay...they won't take it personally (we're all professionals here). That said I know you have seen their work....they have produced some of the most viewed ads on YouTube and Facebook: Purple, Squatty Potty, Poo-pourri, and Lume (they're funny too...unlike a lot of my copy...sad face). Their ads have collected over 1.4 billion views (just 1.4 billion more views than our ads) and the companies they have worked with have made over $400 million in sales. Okay... but why have Benton on our podcast? Some of you might be thinking, "I'm not a multi-million dollar business and I don't sell bathroom products". True....but you are a marketer whether you like it or not...and Benton knows marketing. In todays' show, Benton shares some gems (and some other virtually rare rocks) with us. We talk about the importance of setting your business apart from your competition, paying attention to small details, messaging mistakes, and being authentic with your audience. We loved our time with Benton so much, we asked him to be a speaker at LashCon (and he said yes...even after our interview was over...amazing)! So you are getting a little sneak peek today. I'm sure you will enjoy this episode as much as we did to record it. Harmon Brothers has some amazing online resources that are super affordable. Check out the links below and hopefully, some of the Harmon Brothers magic will rub off on you (I'm rubbing Harmon Brothers all over me every day now...eww). 136. Stop Doing This Online...It's Not Growing Your Business
Running a business can be sooooo frustrating! Right? Sometimes I just wish the zombie apocalypse would happen today. I'd be on the sidelines cheering for the zombies. Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart. Over the years I have learned that is best for me to stay quiet and not really say anything when I'm hurt or angry. Generally, I don't really say anything wise or do anything really productive. In today's episode, I'm going to share some tough love. Some of you like to use your IG feed and your FB Page as a way to vent your frustrations about clients, other lash artists, or lash brands. Today I want to help you shift your mindset some, so that you can create better coping mechanisms and not hurt your business with posts that pretty much turn off potential clients. When you are done listening to this episode, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please let me know if you agree or not. If you don't agree, I'd love to hear why you don't. I'm always open to learning and hearing different opinions. 135. Want to Upgrade Your Studio? Courtney Buhler Has A New Company That Can Help You With That
When you started your lash business were you aiming to be the K-Mart of lashes or was your dream to one day be more like the Nordstrom of lashes? (Does anyone even remember K-Mart?)Being a high-class establishment that is known for taking care of its clients isn't just something you throw together by accident. You need to build systems, establish high standards for customer service and you need to have the best equipment. I see a lot of lash artists work hard to be great at lashing but then cut corners in their choice of equipment and furniture. Sorry IKEA is not high-end. "Please enjoy my Ektorp in the waiting area." Today, Courtney Buhler the CEO of Sugarlash Pro comes onto our show to talk about her new venture, Plush and Oak. Her new company has created a high-end-looking lash bed that won't' break your bank. Courtney shares about her journey in bringing this product to life (it's taken years) and why this lash bed could help you charge more for your services. If you want to get your own upscale lash bed, Courtney wants to help you save $100. 134. How We Use The "Power Of Agreement" In Customer Service & Sales
As a business owner, I have often dreamed of having superpowers. "Oh look, the bank account is low on cash...no problem, I'll use my superpowers and print money (legally) with my trusty lash utility belt".Okay...none of that works or makes any sense. I just wish I could snap my fingers and fix things. Sadly I have yet to develop any powers that just fix problems like unhappy customers or cash flow issues. In today's episode, Tussanee and I sit down and talk about a power we have developed over the years...the power of agreement. It's not quite a superpower but it can really help you when things get sticky with a client or you have a client on the phone who doesn't want to book an appointment with you because your prices are "too high". This is a quick episode and I'm sure this is something you can pick up very quickly and you'll see your customer service and sales improve as a result. 133. Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis - Sarah Robertson's Lash Story
We all have setbacks....to be human is to have to deal with setbacks and losses. For many people when a setback comes, they seem to embrace it and use it as the reason why their life hasn't gone as they hoped (I would have had my own lash salon by now, but my potential landlord smells like popcorn and I couldn't work with him). Some people like Sarah Robertson get pushed down by very difficult setbacks (in her case Multiple Sclerosis) and yet somehow rise above the excuses. Sarah and others like her use these setbacks to be a blessing to others rather than an excuse to just check out and complain. In today's episode, Sarah shares her lash journey in how she built her business (she share some great tips), and then she gives us a peek into what it's like to work and deal with MS. Her story is inspirational. We are so glad she agreed to come on and share her struggles and how she's working through them. We all have our struggles (many of us are really good at hiding them) but learning to work through them rather than using them as an excuse is no easy task. We hope you'll be encouraged by Sarah's story as much as we were. 132. One Thing You Can Do To Improve Your Client's Experience
Want to stand out from your competition? I know we do with our podcast (we are thinking of starting Taco Lash Tip Tuesday soon on IG to help us differentiate ourselves from the 1000's of other lash podcasts). Doing something out of the norm is really how you're going to make your business rise above the sea of sameness. There are a lot of good lash artists in the market...so you need to find little things that can set you apart (We're the only lash podcast with a pug as our mascot!).In today's episode Tussanee shares one thing she does that provides her clients a little extra comfort during their appointment. It's not life-changing...just a small thing she does that her clients enjoy and helps their eyes feel better during a service. We also dive into a little about lash theory and how one can get a better bond. You'll get a little sneak peek into Tussanee's Lash Retention and Styling course she is offering this May 22-23, 2021 (click on the link below for more details...we have 2 seats left...no pressure). Hopefully, you'll give our tip a try and then keep asking yourself, what else could I do in my business that will help to set me apart from my evil demonic competition (I like to think of my competition as being demons...everyone, for the most part, hates demons...okay maybe this thinking of them as demons is a little too much...maybe). 131. Christy Leigh Gurnari Shares How She Rebuilt Her Business More Than Once
Have you had to close your salon and start over at a new location? If you have, you know it can be very difficult and discouraging. For me, I had to start over when I was in the FBI witness protection program after I testified against the world-renowned gangster "One-Eyed Billy Bob". Okay...that's not true...Billy had two eyes...but you get the point...starting over because you had to move or because you put your life on the line to be a "star witness" is something most of us hope only happens once at most. In today's episode, we sit down and talk to Christy Leigh Gurnari about how she's had to restart her business many times (BTW...the drugs are wearing off and what wrote earlier in this post even seems a little odd to me). Christy Leigh is a military wife which means she has had to get used to moving over the years. Her energy and love for our industry is quite contagious and I know you'll love her story. 130. A Behind The Scenes Look at our Business
How's your work/life balance? Is there really such a thing? For me finding a perfect balance between life and work has been about as difficult as finding hair on my head. Sad but true. Finding balance for me is a myth and in today's episode, we give you a sneak peek into what is going on with our business between now and the end of June.We have a lot going on and wanted to share our process on how we are going to get through this crazy time (we don't share this in the podcast, but I'm guessing there will be some late nights with me crying "why me?"). 129. Lorena Ashmore of Dear Lash Love Shares Her Crazy Journey of Change in 2020
How much has your life changed since the pandemic hit us back in March of 2020? For us, the pandemic brought about a lot of change. We had to cancel the LashCruise (lost a bunch of money on that), close Tussanee's lash business and I decided to let my beard grow way beyond what was natural or socially acceptable. It was a tough time with all sorts of changes being forced upon us (thankfully only my family had to deal with my changing beard). As I've gotten older, I've gotten a little more comfortable with the idea of change, but that said changes can still hurt. Just because I know change is normal and expected doesn't make the loss that comes from some changes any less painful or stressful (I had a beard joke planned for here, but the censor came in and removed it...lucky you). Today we have Lorena Ashmore of Dear Lash Love on our show, and she shares her journey over the last year. Everything in her life changed last year: Lorena had surgery, she got engaged, she got pregnant, the pandemic shut the lash industry down, and her podcasting partner of 2 years decided to end their top-rated podcast. It was a crazy year that pretty much touched every aspect of her life. As I watched from the Instagram bleachers in the stadium of life, I saw Lorena go through all this change with grace and kindness. Lorena pretty much shares everything on her IG page and after seeing everything she went through, I felt it would be great to have her on the show to share how she managed to get through such a crazy year. I know you will be encouraged by her honesty and grit. We really enjoyed hearing about her journey and I know you will too. 128. Why Are We So Difficult for Some in The Lash Industry?
Every once in a while...I'll get a DM, email, text, or maybe post online from a concerned artist letting us know we are hurting the lash industry. It usually goes like this:(Playing the part of the "concerned lash artist" is Cardi B.)Cardi B: Hey mother $%#&@...you are one lame #$&!!!Okay, that actually has never happened to us...at least not that aggressive...but we have gotten messages telling us we are bad for the industry and are hurting naive lash artists. (BTW who thought Cardi B would be good for this part? I need a new casting agent.)With that as our backdrop, Tussanee and I feel it would be helpful for us to explain why we do what we do. Do we like being difficult? Are we needy and hope someone will pay attention if we say crazy things? Are we just brainwashed pumpkins who watched too much Sponge Bob with our kids? What is it the drives us to keep saying things that run contrary to many lash trainers and lash brands? In this episode, we unpack this and share how our DNA was formed. We weren't always like this but over the years certain events and people had an impact that really changed how we approach beauty and the lash industry specifically. In the end, we want you to think for yourself. You don't need to agree with us or preach what we preach. We want you to question everything and to the best of your ability to really understand "the why" behind "the how". With this podcast, we want to challenge the way you think and have you reflect on why you do what you do. If your answer is "I do this because this is what my lash master taught me"...then I'd say it's time to dig deeper and really find out why you believe what you believe. It's time to stop being a lash zombie. BTW...we always welcome feedback and criticism people throw at us. I know most people who don't approve of our ideas are doing this because they want to protect the lash industry. I don't think they hate us...they just think we are wrong and want to stop misleading other artists. The motivation is a good one so it's hard for me to cast "hate" on them. So if you have something to share with us, please do. 127. Kellie Pillors Shares How She Brought In Medical Services to Her Lash and PMU Business
Do you have dreams of being a lash salon owner one day? How about having your own product line? Or maybe you want to be a circus clown with huge lashes. (Wait a minute...That's my childhood dream...just forget about it). If you are like most lash artists I know, you probably have some ideas and dreams of what you want to do someday (What? You don't want to lash alone in a room for 40 years?).If you are a dreamer, this interview is for you.In today's episode, we sit down with Kellie Pillors, owner of the Lash Factor Studio and Lash Factor Studio Academy, to talk about how she built a lash and PMU business that also provides medical beauty treatments. Most lash artists struggle to just hire a couple of lash artists, but Kellie decided to go big and hire medical professionals too. Kellie is quite the unicorn, and we felt her story would inspire and encourage you to think out of the box and try something new (How about lashes and pig farming? Could that work? 126. April Meese Shares Ideas on How Partnerships Can Grow Your Business
Need some ideas on how to grow your business? If you're not using partnerships you're missing out (I know I missed out in partnering with my best friend Steve Jobs and Apple back in 1977...still kicking myself). Back when Tussanee first started her lash business in the lash dark ages of 2005 (we used rocks as tweezers), she partnered with a lot of local businesses and associations. If she hadn't come up with that idea (I was against it like I was with Apple), she wouldn't have gotten busy as quickly as she did. Partnerships made a huge difference in the early days. Today, we have business coach April Meese on the show to talk about why and how you can go about building business partnerships. It's a game-changer and while it will take some work, building these partnerships is a long-term strategy that will help your business continue to grow to the point you could start hiring staff. Interested?Once you listen to today's episode please let us know if you have done this yourself and how did it work out? We'd love to hear how partnerships have helped you!April Meese website: https://www.aprilmeese.com/IG: @aprilmeeseincANNOUNCEMENTS:WIN $200 AMAZON GIFT CARDWe need your help us get the word out for our podcast and a great way to do that is by giving us a review on Apple Podcasts. 125. Are You Having a Hard Time Ordering Premade Fans? We Have the Inside Scoop on Why
What is going on with premade fans? I know a couple of smaller brands who have completely run out and I know of at least two major lash brands whose inventories are low. Is this premade fan lash apocalypse that the lash prophets warned us about? Or maybe the lash gods are mad that some of us sold out the industry and started to use premade fans...it's judgment day. Okay, enough of the silly excuses. The truth is the premade lash industry has been hit like many industries by the Covid shutdowns around the world. In today's episode, I break down what is going on in the lash world, and why we are experiencing this shortage. I do want to give a shoutout to Jamie Butler of LashBase and to Carson Varney of Lost Artistry Lash. These two lash bros shared their insights with me so I could turn around and serve you with the latest info. Without their insights, I wouldn't have a whole lot to share with you other than stating the obvious. Now if you are not a lover of premades, I hear you, but please don't feel this is your moment of vindication tell us that premades were never meant to be. Premades will be back...this is just a little setback (like pretty much all of 2020). 124. Ivy Bailey Shares How She Went From One Client to Being Booked Out in Six Months
I have really grown tired of the endless amount of DMs I get from you "busy" lash artists asking me for advice on how to get rid of all these high-paying clients that book out for years in your schedule. I know it's tough for you. That said in today's episode we want to offer some help and encouragement to those lash artists who are still struggling to get their books filled up. If you are struggling to get your books full, we know your pain. When Tussanee first started doing lashes in 2005, nobody knew what lash extensions were. She had to give away the service for free after doing a facial just to get the client to try (it was like selling crack...they were instantly hooked). Today our new friend Ivy Bailey shares how she built her business after she moved to a town and knew only one person. That could be a death sentence to a lot of lash artists' careers but Ivy rose up to the challenge. After hustling for 6 months her books were full and she had a 3-month waitlist. This didn't happen by accident or good luck. Ivy had some great business practices that helped her to create loyal clients who became her lash evangelists. In today's episode which we recorded off of Clubhouse, we get into the details on what Ivy did and how you can do it too. We know you'll love Ivy's story and get some great tips on how you can get your business growing today!ANNOUNCEMENTS:WIN $200 AMAZON GIFT CARDWe need your help us get the word out for our podcast and a great way to do that is by giving us a review on Apple Podcasts. Do you currently feel stuck with your business? Do you ever struggle with what to do next with your business? Do you want to see big changes but just don't know where to start? (I had this hope with my hair but I gave up.)If you are struggling to make changes in your business, you are not alone. Change is difficult...change is scary (being bald is scary too but we'll save that for another podcast). It's amazing to what lengths I will go to when it comes to avoiding change or making big decisions for our business (I just realized I really need to clean all the dust bunnies out from under my bed and my kids' beds and wait...what about my friend's beds?). Making changes in my business can sometimes take forever to happen because I find so many other things to distract me.Does this sound like you? In today's episode, I share how we approach making changes in our business. Once you hear our "secret" it probably won't blow you away...it's very simple but it's a mindset one needs to have if you want to continue to level up your business.Once you hear my thoughts on this, please go to our IG page and let us know your thoughts on our tip. There is a second half to this podcast where we share our experience of working in California during the Covid shutdown. 121. Slow Down and Enjoy Your Life
A year ago this week, we had to shut down our business and we had to cancel the ill-fated "Lash Cruise". It was a tough week. On the news, we were being told we just needed to stay home for two weeks to help "flatten the curve". I had a sinking feeling two weeks would not be enough. We ended up being closed for more months in 2020 than we were open. That all said, looking back I have to say I'm so thankful for the shutdown. Yes, money got tight and there was a lot of fear about what was going to happen. But one of the real blessings of 2020 was I got to slow down for the first time in my life. While at home I worked maybe for 6 hours and the rest of the time I hung out with my kids and amazing wife. It was a wonderful time to connect, make dinner together and watch shows and play games. Since life has begun to get back to normal, I have decided to keep my relationships a high priority. I don't want to go back to the 80 hour work weeks. I don't want to wait 5 years to call an old friend from college. I don't want to resent hanging out with my family because I have "work" to do. Yes, there will be a week here and there where I will need to work more, but I don't want to look back at 2021 and see a wasteland where all I did was work. I want to invest in the people in my life that matter most. In this episode, I share some of my thoughts on this Covid year anniversary and encourage you to take some time to enjoy your life and the ones you love the most. 120. Shelby of Lash Boss Radio Shares Why She Downsized From Two Salons to One
Do you have a dream of owning your own lash salon one day? Of course, you do. Everyone wants to have their own lash empire someday where your staff will feed you grapes while you sit on your lash throne made of spoolies. Okay...maybe that's a little over the top. That said, most lash artists I know hope to have a salon one day (spoolie lash throne not included) but running one is no small task. While you might be a great lash artist, becoming a great business owner requires a whole new set of skills. In today's episode Shelby Tarleton of Lash Boss Radio and Pink Lady Lash shares her journey from beauty school to one lash salon to two lash salons...and now back down to one lash salon. This is a great episode for anyone who is looking to hire someday and build a salon, brand, or any type of company that serves our industry. Being a leader is not an easy thing and building a sustainable company that doesn't completely take over your life is not easy either. In today's episode, Shelby gives you a peek into what it's like to run a salon and why she felt it was better for her to combine two salons into one. 119. Want to Stand Out From Your Competition? We Talk About How to do a Customer Service Audit
Does your lash business provide the best customer service in your community? If I were to visit your business, what do you think would most impress me about your customer service? (Please don't say, I developed a close connection with my guests...everyone says that). I know many of you think your customer service is second to none, but what really makes your business stand out? Is it the reception area? Your in-room etiquette? What makes you special? In today's episode, we talk about giving your salon a customer service audit where you rate every "touchpoint" in your business. Being the best means you go beyond the norm and wow your clients with special customer service touches that other businesses don't do. If you want your business to stand out, you can't just do what everyone else is doing. You need to take a deep look at your business, be honest with yourself and grade it accordingly. Once you can have that honest conversation with yourself, you can start to build a business that will set you apart from your competition. When you are done with this episode, please schedule some time in the coming days to do a customer service audit and grade your business as honestly as you can. Once you're done, have a friend or fellow teammate take a look at it and see if they agree with you. Once you've done this, you can then make plans to upgrade parts of your experience and begin to build a business that will make you a leader in your community! 118. Savanah Carmichael Talks About Closing Two Of Her Three California Salons and Why She's Moving
If you were a beauty professional in 2020, it most likely was a horrible year for your business. I've seen some of my lash friends throw in the towel and just decide to move on...and I don't blame them. In many states and countries around the world, they've deemed us as "not essential" and forced us to close our business (many have opted to work underground....time to open up our "speakeasy" lash salons). While sadly we have had to say good-bye to some wonderful artists this last year, this has also been an exciting time to see lash artists pivot and reinvent themselves. Savannah Carmichael is one of those resilient lash artists who has had to make big changes in her business and in her life in order for her to keep her business afloat here in California. In this episode, Savannah shares her journey of building a lash empire in Southern California and then being confronted by the shutdowns brought on by Covid-19. Savannah's story is quite inspiring and our hope is you'll be encouraged to keep on fighting for your business even when it seems the whole world (including the government) seems to want you to fail. It was an honor to have Savannah on and when you are done listening to this episode, please give her a follow. Are you ready for another social media app? If you're like me back in early January, I'm sure you're saying "NO" as you read this. You might be thinking, "I'm already on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Yelp, Tik Tok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Vine...I don't have any more time!!! Arrrrgh! If I have to post on one more feed, I swear I'm quitting this life, moving to Pennsylvania for a more simple life and becoming Amish".I get you...that is how I felt too and after living the simple life in Pennsylvania for a month, I decided to give The Clubhouse a try (btw....Vine is gone...in case you didn't notice...you can stop posting there...I just saved you some time..you're welcome). For the last month, I've been playing with this new app and have grown to really enjoy it. This app can serve a purpose for our industry. You can get benefits from it and not have to put any work into it...now that is an app with some promise. Sadly, this app is only available for iPhone users at this time. I think I read one of the Clubhouse founders feels Android phones have no practical use other than being a good doorstop (okay...I might be exaggerating a little here). The truth is they have plans for it to be on Android eventually...not sure when yet. In this episode, I explain what the app is and how it can be useful to you as a lash artist. I also share some tips on how to use the app.Hope you enjoy this episode and hopefully, we'll see you in the Clubhouse. We plan to start a room soon where we can hang out with you every week and share stories that will encourage and inspire you. 116. Bella Lash is Making Lashes In The USA/Owners Zach and Haley Share Their Groundbreaking Journey
Did you know that most of the lashes we use in our industry are made in China, North Korea, and Vietnam?"Of course I know that Paul...I wasn't born yesterday. Tell me something I don't know". Did you know if I close my eyes, I only see clowns? Wait...let me try this again!Um...did you know that Bella Lash is making lashes in the United States at this very moment as I type this made-up conversation? "What? You crazy Paul. That's impossible". True I might be crazy (we can talk about that on another episode) but the truth is Bella Lash has accomplished something most lash artists and brands thought would never happen. We are honored to have Zach and Haley Chipman come on our show today to share details of this exciting development. They have spent the last few years spending millions of dollars with a dream of making lashes here in the states and bringing jobs back home...and after a lot of hard work, they've succeeded. One of the lessons from 2020 is that we rely on importing lash products from Asia too much. As long as we have to import most of our products, we will see shortages and delays in the availabilities of our lash supplies. Now that Bella Lash is making lashes stateside, there is hope now that this problem could be a thing of the past. BTW...if you have been wanting to start your own lash product line, this might be the easiest and most affordable way for you to start your own brand. You won't want to miss this episode. We hope you will be inspired as much as we were. What Zach and Haley have accomplished is a game-changer and we look forward to seeing how this will continue to evolve and push our industry to new highs. 115. Tips on How To Create a Brand Name That Sticks
Are you thinking of renaming your business? Are you about to open your first business but aren't sure what to call your new salon? If you said yes to either of these questions, you'll want to listen to this baby cast episode where Paul shares tips from one of his favorite books from 2020: "Hello My Name Is Awesome: How to Create Brand Names That Stick" by Alexandra Watkins. BTW...even if you said no to my questions, I think you'll find this episode to be very intriguing (of course I'm a little bias). Do you spend a lot of time on Instagram trying to build your following? Having a large following that is engaged with you is a great way to build your business...but it's easier said than done. In today's episode, we close out our interview with Ali (AKA Lash Anarchist) on how she built her following on Instagram. If you follow Ali you know her page gets huge engagement and it didn't happen by accident. Ali over the last three years has been very purposeful and just has a knack for connecting with people. 111. Discounting Your Prices Can Be a Great Strategy to Grow Your Business
What are your feelings about discounting? If you are like a lot of lash artists I talk to, many people feel discounting their services hurts their brand. I'd say that is true if you are fully booked out for three months and every time you raise your prices, your books stay full. If your name in your community is gold like this, then yes discounting will hurt your brand. That all said, I'm going to assume there are enough of you out there who are newer and are trying to build your following...or maybe you have a couple of new team members you've trained and they are not busy yet...or maybe it's January or August and things are just a little slower in these months (or maybe you have been dealing with this freakin pandemic and clients are scared to come in). If this sounds like you, then discounting your services can be a great way to attract people to you when done correctly. In this episode, I explain why you should start looking into discounting your services, how you should discount, when you should discount, and why knowing your lifetime value of a client is so important. My hope is you'll take this "discount tool" off the shelf, dust it off, and put it back in your tool belt (why am I using a woodshop analogy?). When you are building your business, you want to have every tool at your disposal. 110. Ali Lilly (Lash Anarchist) Talks About Salon Ownership and Why It's Not For Everyone
Do you want to have your own lash salon with staff someday? If so you will not want to miss this episode. Salon ownership is an amazing calling and as a former salon owner, I have the utmost respect for people in our industry who pursue their dream to be a salon. I feel salon owners have the most difficult job in our industry. That said, I don't feel salon ownership is for the weak at heart. It's a tough road and today we sit down with Ali to talk about her experience of running her own salon (actually she's owned two salons). If you follow Ali (Lash Anarchist) on Instagram you know she is a straight shooter and does not sugarcoat things...and she stayed true to herself in this interview. When you are done with this interview, we hope you'll have a better idea of what it's like to run a lash salon and hopefully be encouraged to go for it...or maybe give it some more thought. This is a 2 part interview as we could talk for hours with Ali. Today we just talk about salon ownership for the most part and next week we'll have her back were talking about how to build a following on Instagram. 109. We Share How Bad Reviews Can Help You Get New Clients
Do you hate Yelp? Have you gotten a bad review on Yelp or Google? If you have been in business for a while, I'm sure you have. Sadly getting bad reviews is part of the job when you have a business. When we got our first bad review it destroyed our day...in fact for days Tussanee and I just keep talking about it. We questioned if it was a real review. We seriously doubted the claims the person was making. We felt violated! Has that happened to you? What we didn't know then but do now, is bad reviews can actually help you build your business if you handle them correctly (of course a lot of bad reviews are a different story). In this episode, we break down how you can take a bad review and turn it into something good for your business. I know this sounds like a stretch, but we have done it over and over ever since Yelp came into existence. When you are done with this episode, our hope is bad reviews will lose all their power over you. Yes it will suck to have to deal with them, but you'll have a strategy in place now that can turn this short term loss into a long term win. 108. Why You Need to Stop Firing Clients and Start Enforcing Your Policies
Have you seen a post like this? Angel the Lash Artist: "Hey guys I had a client come in again with dirty lashes....ugh! This is the 5th time it's happened!"Lash Minion: "What! It's time to fire that girl!"Lash Minion 2: "That's right...I've fired clients for less!"You know where this going...just a bunch of lash artists talking about how they all deserve better clients and that you don't need to work with someone who is late or never cleans their lashes. I get it...it's empowering to say "fire that bad client". In this episode, we talk about how "firing" clients can backfire on your business (ooh...see what I did with "fire"...so clever). Truth is there is a better way to get rid of bad clients, and I'd say 99% of the time you won't need to "fire" anyone....they'll fire themselves.Intrigued? Check out this episode and when it's over, we hope you'll have a better strategy when it comes to dealing with "bad clients".Happy listening!ANNOUNCEMENTS:LINK TO BUY A LASHCONFERENCE T-SHIRT:http://bit.ly/3pylzIfLINK TO APPLY TO BE A SPEAKER AT THE LASHCONFERENCE 2021https://forms.gle/TjthxSqCGEytqyyD9GUEST ANNOUNCER LASCAST OPENING SCRIPTHere is our script that you can use to record the opening to our show:"Hi I’m (name) and I work at (name of biz) in (city, state) and I’m today’s guest announcer. 107. Stop Replacing Your Glue Dot During Your Service
Do you replace your glue dot multiple times during a service? If you do, stick around for this podcast as we hope to save you a lot of money by getting you to rethink this practice. Imagine if you only used one glue dot per client? How much glue would that save?Recently I've been seeing posts on IG reminding people to replace their glue dot every 30-60 minutes during a lash appointment. I even saw some people saying they replace it every 5-10 minutes. What? If you did a 90-minute appointment you'd change your glue dot at least 9 times! I did a pole on our IG stories asking our followers what they did and more than 60% of them replaced the glue dot during their service. Tussanee has been doing lashes for almost 16 years now and we had a salon for 13 years where we probably did 70,000 to 80,000 sets of lashes between our team and Tussanee...and we never replaced the glue dot during the service. Because of our technique, our average client would come in every 4 weeks...so we got great longevity even while using a single dot of glue during an appointment. So what gives? Are we doing something wrong or are maybe a lot of lash artists around the world wasting a lot of glue every day in their lash rooms. In this episode, Tussanee breaks down why you should rethink this practice and save your glue. BTW...after you listen to this episode, please test out our ideas. Never just take our word...always test it to make sure it works for you. That's how we do it in our business!ANNOUNCEMENTS:LINK TO BUY A LASHCONFERENCE T-SHIRT:http://bit.ly/3pylzIfLINK TO APPLY TO BE A SPEAKER AT THE LASHCONFERENCE 2021https://forms.gle/TjthxSqCGEytqyyD9GUEST ANNOUNCER LASCAST OPENING SCRIPTHere is our script that you can use to record the opening to our show:"Hi I’m (name) and I work at (name of biz) in (city, state) and I’m today’s guest announcer. 105. Why You Need to Use Saline When Rinsing Your Client's Lashes
We recently did a survey on our IG page and 75% of the lash artist who responded said they use distilled water when they rinse their client's lashes. That number caught us by surprise. Now we know the industry in the last few years has warmed up to the idea that they can rinse their client's lashes but we didn't know that lash artists mostly use distilled water when they do. While distilled water is best for your nano mister or your humidifier, it is not the best option for rinsing your client's lashes because it is quite uncomfortable for their eyes. Why is that? Great question! This is what we unpack in today's episode. In this episode, we'll explain some of the science behind why saline is a much better choice when it comes to rinsing your client's lashes and why you don't need to worry about the "salt" in the saline. If you have any questions please reach out to us via DM or email ([email protected]). 103. Joseph and Lina of LashBar Share How They Built Their Lash Franchise
Today Joseph and Lina Mai join us in the podcast booth. This amazing couple has spent the last few years building a very unique lash franchise model: they only allow lash stylists to buy franchises. Most lash franchises are owned by business people who see that lashes are the next big thing and they jump at the opportunity to be part of this exciting industry. While that is all nice and good, many of these franchise owners don't really understand the struggles that lash artists have to deal with. Because LashBar only lets lash stylists buy their franchises, they don't have this problem. In this episode, Lina and Joseph share their journey in building their franchise over the last few years and they share tips on what it takes to build your own lash salon. Plus, Paul and Joseph talk about bowling...not really sure how that got into the conversation.Once you listen to the episode, please share it with your friends and let us know what you think in IG. 101. Sandra Duarte of Lash411 Shares Why She's Leaving the Lash Industry Part I
Earlier in the year, I did a survey of lash artists asking who was looking to make a career change...one-third of the people who responded said they are looking to make big changes. That's huge! That all said, one of my lash heroes decided to make some huge changes in her lash career...and this all started before Covid-19 hit. Sandra Duarte of Lash411 as an individual has probably helped more lash artists than anyone else I know in the industry. She was the first lash artist to share tips and tricks on IG. Her IG lives were epic. In this week's episode, I sit down with Sandra and talk about why she is moving on from lashes and what has happened over the last year to bring about these changes. My talk with Sandra went on for over 2 hours so we decided to make two episodes out of the interview. I feel this is a great way for us to end the year as we get geared up for 2021. I hope you'll find this episode to be encouraging and uplifting...I know I did. ANNOUNCEMENTS:LINK TO APPLY TO OUR FOCUS GROUP: We are starting our own LashCast Focus Group! 99. Cheryl of Untamed Artistry Shares How Our Lash Education Models Are Not Serving Our Community
Cheryl of Untamed Artistry joins us again to talk about the lash education industry. Cheryl is one of our favorite people and today in this episode we might step on some toes regarding this topic. While our industry is quite new, it has been around for around 15 years and not a lot has changed in how lash trainings are held around the country. Most trainings are two days: day one you learn theory and work on a doll head and on day two you work on a model or two. Cheryl thinks we can do better.Cheryl shares how there are limits to how much we can learn in one day and maybe it's time to rethink our whole training process. Because of technology, there are so many more ways for us to communicate information that can personalize the education experience. While this is a long episode, we feel it's an important one for you to hear. Once you are done with the episode, please take a screenshot of this episode and post it on IG. Let us know what you think and share it with the lash community. 98. Getting Back Control of your Business by Setting Strong Client Boundaries
One of the most common struggles I see lash artists dealing with is client boundaries. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't see someone on Facebook or Instagram complaining about a client who is always late or doesn't wash their lashes. Sadly the advice I see given to these struggling artists isn't always the best. I know it can be frustrating dealing with clients who don't follow your aftercare instructions or come late to every appointment (but somehow find time to stop by Starbucks on the way in). The most common advice I see is that the lash artist should fire their client. Sounds good at first and it's for sure empowering...but is it really the best way to run your business? How many clients can you afford to fire?Today, Erika joins us and we get to sit down and talk about all things client boundaries. Tussanee has been dealing with clients for over 15 years now and has tried pretty much every tactic under the sun. Today we all sit down and share all our best practices when it comes to getting control of your clients...btw...we don't suggest you fire every client who can't abide by your rules. We like to let consequences be the teacher rather than us.Hope you enjoy this episode and as always please feel free to reach out to us on Instagram or email. 96. LASHCON 2019 Replay - Michael Yost "What is Team-Based Culture?"
Do you have a team? Are you booth renting? Do you pay commission? Are you thinking of hiring other lash artists at some point? If you have staff...how's it working out for you? If you're like most salon owners I know, it's can be quite difficult to keep your business running smoothly, to be a strong leader, and to keep your business profitable. No one is born knowing how to run a salon, and if you are like many lash artists I know, you probably just copied the salon you once worked for or worse (if you never worked for a salon) just make it all up as you go. If you want to have a strong and successful salon, you need to have a solid business system that really takes care of your staff. Winging it will only end up in a lot of pain and suffering. If you've been listening to our podcast, you know we're huge fans of Team-Based Pay or what I think is more accurate...Team-Based Culture. In today's episode, we have the head of education from Strategies, Michael Yost, joins us to talk about this amazing salon business system. Michael spoke at LashCon last year, and we want to share his talk to give you a preview of the kind of presentations you'll get at the VIRTUAL LashConference this November 15-16, 2020. If you have staff or if you ever want to hire staff, you seriously need to consider using the Team-Based Culture business model. In today's episode, you'll get a good overview of what this system and how it can help you build the business of your dreams. We'll be back next week with two more LashCon preview episodes. If you like what you hear today, you'll want to sign up and join us on November 15-16, 2020! 94. LASHCON 2019 Replay - Life After Lashing Panel
Today we are releasing one of my favorite panel presentations at LashCon 2019. In this session, we had Jamie Butler (LashBase), Katie Gross (Lash Artist Box), Mike & Shaune Jones (LivBay Lash) Malaena Kelson (Lash Happy) and Lana Wyer (Lux Uncut) come together and talk about building a second business based on their lash passion. Becoming a lash boss is an amazing and fulfilling career, but for many of us, we didn’t realize how physically demanding it can be. When our backs tighten up or our wrists scream in pain, one has to question can I really do this for another 20-30 years? Our industry is still so new and because of that, there are a lot of opportunities to serve our industry without having to do lashes for the rest of your life. In this recording, we talk with a handful of lash bosses who are training, developing products, and starting side businesses that support our industry. I hope you will be inspired by their stories and begin to think outside the box as to what you could do to bless our industry besides doing lashes in a room. 93. LASHCON 2019 Replay-Daryl Jenkins Shares What Numbers You Need To Know To Grow Your Business
What numbers do you track that help you to know if your business is growing and healthy? There are a lot of numbers you can track for your business, but Daryl Jenkins from Strategies is here to help you measure the right numbers that will help you grow your business the most. 90. Is the Fall Shed a Real Thing...or Just An Excuse When Lash Artists Have Poor Retention?
For the last 7 or 8 years every September, you'll see posts teaching lash artists about the infamous "fall shed". It's pretty much accepted now that if you're having lash retention issues around the fall it's a normal thing and you just need to inform your clients. Now Tussanee has been doing lashes since 2005 and never noticed in all her years any unusual lash retention in the fall. Even when we had staff and were doing 600-800 women a month we never saw this phenomenon. Now that doesn't mean the fall shed isn't real...it just means we never noticed it. So Tussanee decided to put on her investigator hat and did some deep research looking at medical studies on lash loss and talked to a couple of well-respected doctors on the subject too. One of the doctors, Dr. Warren Stout did his own search oN the fall shed in two well-respected medical databases and shared his results with us. In this episode, Tussanee breaks down what she found and gets a little nerdy. This is the kind of stuff Tussanee loves to geek out over! Hopefully, you will too!If you have been following us for a while, you know we like to challenge the status quo with the goal to either affirm what is being taught by our industry or debunk it. In this episode, we'll give you some good ammo to really think through this issue. 88. Tiffany of Level Up Lash Podcast Talks About Moving From Her Home to Brick and Mortar
Early this year Bella Lash released a study of our lash industry from 2019....and one of the big surprises to me was a large percentage of lash artists who work out of their home. I had no idea the number was so large. That said, we recently got to know Tiffany Watson of the Level Up Podcast, and she told me she moved this summer out of her home to her own business space during this crazy pandemic. Pretty bold move if you ask me. I was so intrigued by her story, I felt it would be inspirational to share it with you.I know many of you who are working from home hope to one day make the leap to your own space.
