Episode 554 Steve Raye interviews Antonino Laspina - Trade Commissioner and Executive Director for the USA Antonino Laspina was born in 1957 in Aidone, Sicily. He graduated with honors in Political Science, earned a master’s degree in foreign trade and export management – Corce in 1980, and then attended SIOI postgraduate school in diplomatic affairs in 1981. In the same year, he joined the Italian Trade Agency and experienced different positions in his career, both in the headquarters in Rome and in major foreign offices. As Director of the Trade Promotion Department, he was deeply committed to promoting Italian Lifestyle in many international markets including the United States, where he implemented a large communication and promotional campaign “Live in I Style”, that was carried on throughout 2000-2003. As Trade Commissioner, he was posted mainly in Asia, including Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, and Taipei. He then went on to become the Director of the Beijing office and Coordinator of the ITA network in China for 12 years. In 2015, Mr. Laspina was appointed as the Director of Marketing in the Rome headquarters. He focused on the innovation of on-demand services for the international business development of ITA customers and supported them on every step of international trade, including market approach, access and consolidation. He also utilized groundbreaking innovations in ITA core activities such as executive and HR training and omnichannel business services. Throughout his career, Mr. Laspina has worked with universities, including those in China, training centers, and both Italian and international magazines on subjects related to international trade and the economy. He became a member of the Young Leaders’ Group (Italy-United States Council) in 1998. He was posted in NYC on November 9th, 2019 as the Executive Director of ITA in the US market. Episode 569 Steve Raye interviews Alder Yarrow About Alder: Alder has spent the last 25 years creating customer experiences for some of the world’s top brands. He is trusted by visionary executives to help rethink or create entirely new brand experiences and products that disrupt existing industries or create entirely new markets. When celebrity businessman George Zimmer wanted to create his new online company Generation Tux, he asked Alder and his team to design the entire brand experience. Alder began his career as an information architect, interaction designer, and UX designer even as those terms were being defined in the industry. As the Web progressed from simple home pages to e-commerce transactions, so did Alder rapidly progress from designer to executive leader in TUX design. Along the way, he designed Williams-Sonoma's first online wedding registry and the first end-to-end online car purchase experience for Autonation. At Sapient he helped define the company’s global user experience design process and opened the company’s Tokyo office with a team of fellow executives. In 2005 Alder founded HYDRANT, a customer experience and product design firm. Alder has led mission-critical brand and experience design engagements for brands including Google, Twitter, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Gymboree, Cisco, HP, Motorola, Fidelity, Anki, Blurb, Starwood, Subaru, and Tesla Motors, often serving as an outsourced product design leader. Most recently Alder served as the Chief Experience Officer at Cibo, a brand and customer experience agency (acquired by Projekt202) dedicated to creating winning brands and products by applying design thinking to business. As CXO, Alder managed the company's UX and Strategy offerings. In that capacity, he developed the company’s unique Brand Experience Strategy approach and provided thought leadership on brand, customer experience, and UX by writing and speaking. San Francisco Magazine has called Alder “The Wine World’s Brightest Cyberstar” and he is widely accepted as a pioneer of wine blogging. The Loacker family has been running its own wineries since 1978, strictly following the principles of biodynamics and homeopathy. This means that in the vineyards of Loacker estates the use of chemistry was completely eliminated by using biodynamic and homeopathic products in the treatment of the vines. Arnica, for example, serves to remedy the damage caused by hail to vines and grapes; the Aconitum is used against sudden infections, while Silicea helps to strengthen the structure of the leaves and shoots. The purpose is to obtain the maximum possible balance of the vine. Now the wines made according to natural criteria, unlike in the past, are a guarantee of high quality. The Loacker family still owns three wineries in three different Italian wine regions (Alto Adige, Montalcino, Maremma) with a total area of 45 hectares of vineyards. The wines produced embrace a wide range so as to be able to conquer all the palates of wine lovers. "Punset" is from the Piedmontese dialect meaning “beautiful hill.” The estate is located in Neive, in the heart of the Langhe area of Piedmont on top of a hill overlooking the historic capital. It was given the nickname by the Count of Neive to describe the view of their lands emerging by the autumn fog viewed from his castle. During the 1980s Marina Marcarino took over the estate and began formally converting the property to organic farming, rejecting the use of all kinds of pesticide and chemical products. Her agronomic practices include minimal use of treatments based on copper and sulfur, preferring biodynamic preparations and embracing the philosophy of Manasobu Fukuoka, also called “agriculture of not doing.” Vineyards are kept green and there is a limited working of the soil with the ideal that the farm is perfectly integrated into nature. History: Their estate has been owned by her family for four generations. However, before Marina formally became a winemaker, the family were making wine as a hobby. Originally, she was actually supposed to become an engineer because her parents wanted her to run the family construction company. However, as a child her grandmother would care for her at vineyards and a their farm, so, she ended up falling in love with farming in general at a young age. The USA market was just seeing the post mid -century growth of Imported wines. This was especially the start to introductions of what Italy has a bounty to offer now, the ancient and historical revival of Vitas Vinifera. Also in this post era of introductions emerging are the modern wine techniques and self proclaimed modernists, he was alongside with producers now joining the wine scene. Stephanie Biondi of the Biondi Winery: Although the winery was established at the end of the 19th Century, the Biondi family have owned the vineyards since the 1600s. Maximum production was reached during the period between the two World Wars, Since 1999, Stephanie and husband Ciro have taken over both the upkeep of the vineyards and the winemaking. They have succeeded in restoring the 6 hectares owned by the family, leading to the birth of Outis and the production of high-quality wines, whilst rediscovering the enormous potential of the volcanic ‘terroir’ and its indigenous grape varietals. The three terraced vineyards which make up the 6 hectares are planted with traditional Albarello vines on the South-East facing slopes of Mount Etna, in the comune of Trecastagni, approximately 18 km from Catania. Vigna Chianta lies at an altitude of between 600 to 700 m.a.s.l. on a crater dating back to 125 BC and while there are still some old Nerello vines, the white grape varietals Carricante, Catarrato and Minella make up most of the production. Vigna Cisterna Fuori planted on the same crater, but with a different aspect, produces predominantly Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio. Last, but by no means least, Vigna San Nicolò lies on a crater dating back 12,000 years and produces exclusively Nerello. Under Jordan’s leadership, NHLC has received numerous accolades, including an “A rating” for consumer access to wine by The American Wine Consumer Coalition and was named “The Best State in America for wine drinkers” by the Washington Post. Most recently, NHLC was honored as the nation’s top control state by StateWays Magazine, which recognized New Hampshire for its innovative programs and focus on responsible consumption. Jordan began her career in the food industry working in restaurants and a private retail shop. Jordan joined NHLC in 1988 as a retail store clerk. Eventually she was promoted to assistant manager and then store manager at one of NHLC’s signature NH Liquor & Wine Outlet locations. Prior to her current position, Jordan served for 13 years as NHLC’s wine marketing specialist, where she steadily grew NHLC’s wine sales to 44 percent of the overall business. Jordan played a key role in establishing New Hampshire Wine Week, a customer-focused, week-long celebration of wine that draws more than 60 of the world’s leading winemakers to New Hampshire each January to participate in intimate wine dinners, bottle-signings and tasting events. The week culminates with the largest wine tasting event north of Boston, the Winter Wine Spectacular, which has drawn thousands of guests and raised nearly $2 million for charity over the last 14 years. We have a natural agricultural approach, often quite personal, in constant flux, that reflects who we are: a fusion of local traditions and of something that is deeply cultural, that we’ve built from the teachings and influences of the many natural methods that we’ve experimented through the years. Maybe because our grand parents handed over their hoe to our right hand and a metaphorical library to the other, that we’ve used to deepen the various agricultural approaches, treasure them and fuse them with our own. That hoe represents the viticultural tradition of Piglio, that has existed for two thousand years, on volcanic soils, with an obsessive care for plants and vineyards that have always coexisted with gardens, fruit trees and animals. Our cellar is a small country house in the mountains, on the consular Roman road that took from Lazio to Abruzzo, two rooms with amphoras, concrete, wood and demijohn glass jugs. Steve Raye sits down with Paul Quaglini There are reviews for geeks, and then there are reviews for the rest of the world,” said Paul Quaglini when asked if he believed in giving wines a numeric rating (the verdict: they’re a “necessary evil”). Paul is ABC’s wine supervisor covering the country of Italy who believes that people generally get too caught up in finding the perfect wine. “If you like it, it’s good wine. Your palate is the most important judge,” explained Paul. His palate’s favorite: Italian Sangiovese. If he had the option, Paul would love to host a dinner party at his house with special guests Piero Antinori, Abe Lincoln and Antonio Galloni, while serving Sangiovese, of course. Paul has had the pleasure of visiting Italy, most frequently the Tuscany area, about a dozen times and considers it to be his favorite travel destination. He loves to travel, but notes that if you’re not too into wine, “the trips would be grueling.” Incidents such as losing luggage or a delayed flight are merely minor hiccups to Paul. “You have to roll with the punches when you travel.
