Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
What are the different rules to name a drug? How does generic name differ from trade name, to know answers of these questions with details about generic names and brand names of drugs, you need to listen to today's episode. The non proprietary names are famously called as generic names. Each drug has a unique INN . Knowing suffixes will prompt you to know each drug group and its mechanism nicely and accurately. Then I will give you all different details and facts along with examples of generic names, all this information is highly interesting and important. With this, next I will shift the talks to trade names or brand names.I will talk about need of these names, their quick facts, their examples, evaluation along with generic names, I will discuss all the pros and cons, how the generic names and brand names differ, I will highlight the importance of generic names, at the same time I will also hypothetically tell the essence of brand names, now that may not be in much vogue or practically applicable, but I will be doing this to exercise freedom of speech, discussion , expression and opinion about scientific facts on this audio platform. That will be drawing today's curtains down..

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast NAME OF DRUGS-1
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
How do you name a drug? Why is Aspirin called as Aspirin? Is it same as Acetylsalicylic acid? What is the basis of all these things? Let us get in to mechanics, traditions, and rules of this name game in today's episode. There are many grounds to classify a drug naming method, especially on basis of molecular structure, etc.Broadly I will classify them in three categories namely Chemical or Scientific name, Secondly Non proprietary or Generic name, Thirdly, Proprietary or trade name or brand name.Talk will be starting from descriptions of Chemical Name. Their main basis is the molecular structure of the drug so its very complex, long, cumbersome name. Nobody can memorize all these set of data so Next, coding system was adopted, but that is not practically possible to be universally adopted system. All these concepts will be explained with the help of proper and classic examples.
Then next a universal system was adopted which came to be known as Non proprietary or Generic drug name, this was termed as quite useful and was adopted by competent authority like USAN, approved by WHO. Hence this termed out to be really of great usefulness and eased out the naming of drugs a bit. This name was assigned to the drugs of only therapeutic importance. Hence drug assortment was too possible upto an extent. Well, more of the details with suitable right examples will be covered iin upcoming episode. Keep the candle of interest and curiosity lit till next wool yarn of conversations is knit.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast DRUG CATEGORIES
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
Do you know the different categories in which the drug can be classified? To dive deep in the point to ponder, Lets get set and start the talk of day by broadly classifying the drugs in two main categories namely Prescription and Non Prescription drugs. Latter are also known as Over the Counter Drugs abbreviated famously as OTC Drugs.
After covering all the important details, their basis of being called so and wonderful examples to quote, I will be shifting the focus of discussions towards detailed categorisation of drugs , this time basis being a little different, something like capability of a drug of being abused, misused or involving illegal purpose. On these aspects, I will be explaining four categories all in all, much in detail which you all will appreciate and like as it is in its own kinda a novel type of information. I will explain some new schedules introduced in Drug Cosmetic Act also which will be of great help to all of you regarding latest updates!!
Lastly with a word of caution about overuse or excessive use of even OTC drugs causing harm to the body and a beautiful advise to observe delicately the thin line between optimum and excessive use and harm and benefit, I will only say, "Excess of everything is bad", even safe drugs should be used in safe limit!! With this, I promise not to drive y'all impatient and overtime ridden, I would simply seal the discussion here and now...

Drug shape along with characteristics of "Chirality" or "Stereoisomerism".All the concepts will be crystal clear with apt examples. A fact about current overpowered use of racaemic mixture of drugs will be discussed along with the basis to justify the rationality of this point of talk.

If you want to know about many plant sources left for discussion, what more could be added to the ones already discussed? All these will be known to you all till the full stop. To break the ice, lets have a word about Resins, they are oxidised, polymerised volatile oils, insoluble in water, next I will complete my resin story by fitting some good types of resins along with theur respective examples.
Next, I will be talking about Tannins, they are phenolic compounds soluble in water obtained from plants, basically possessing astringent action.
Next set of words I dedicate to the Gums, they are colloidal exudates, secretory products of plants. They can be made into sugary polysachharides, Though pharmacologically inert, they find great use pharmacologically as suspending or emulsifying agents.
Finally before turning the curtains down for today's episode, a word about Glycerine will make it to the full stop. Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast NATURE & SOURCES OF DRUGS-2
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
Do you want to know about the many non synthetic drug sources, do you wanna know them on your tips? What are the most important ones amongst these? All these questions will be answered in today's session. Initially I will spill some coffee and my thoughts to discuss about non synthetic drug sources. As a common rule, I want to start of this discussion points from the oldest, historically and modernly important Plant/Vegetable sources. Egypt, Greece, India, China all have propounded and practiced lot of traditional medicinal streams. For learning purpose, I will be categorising these Plant /Vegetable sources into Alkaloids, Glycosides and Oils for today. i will be discussing each one's characteristics, subtypes, features, effects, examples, uses, forms of uses and all the talk will be designed with apt and beautiful examples. All the discussions are elaborated pointwise so as to make the concept crystal clear and simplified. But due to extensive details, I will not be discussing more of the sources apart from these above told, as that would become quite exhaustive, there should be proper ventilation and space in mind closet for. sunlight to be in, for thoughts to be contemplated, revived, and relax, cos' that's the source of memory power and learning.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast NATURE & SOURCES OF DRUGS-1
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
Do you have any idea about nature of drugs? Did you ever wonder from where drugs are obtained? all these pearls of information are stringed. in today's episode.
I will start my verbal skills with the most groundfooted basic drug origin, its actually a chemical entity, as simple and as complex as you know and you can imagine!first set of classification is in Organic and Inorganic drugs with their examples. next set of classification is on the basis of drug states like solid, liquid and gaseous drugs, again with their examples.
Next set of classification is on the basis of molecular weight of drugs. It may range from 100-1000 D. Too small and too large drugs have their own complications, though I have talked about exceptions here too.Next I would be shortly commenting upon Xenobiotics and some natural body substances behaving like drugs specially when chemically modified into signal molecules/chemical congeners of prototype.
Next I will be opening the pandora's box for the synthetic sources of drugs. yes, there are broadly two major types of drug sources-Synthetic and Non synthetic. So today's talk will be centered around synthetic ones. Why the sources for majority of drugs has changed into laboratories from natural plants and animals. For understanding this, I will give you so many benefits of having drugs synthetically or semi synthetically produced. Finally summarizing the essence of synthetic drug production in one sentence, when chemical and physical properties of drug change, its pharmacological activity also changes.I will wrap it up for today with few wonderful examples. To unravel the mysteries of more non synthetic drug sources, you all need to be patient till next episode....

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast SOURCES OF DRUG INFORMATION-3
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
What are Non Official Drug Information sources? Can they serve as Secondary sources of drug information? All this and much related to this particular topic of discussion will be measured in leaps and bounds in today's episode.
If Official drug compendia serves as Primary source, then definitely Non official drug compendia serves as Secondary source of drug information. i will start my talk with comments on Martindale, also known as Extrapharmacopoeia. It is published by the Royal Pharmaceutical society of Great Britain and is the Complete Drug Reference. It includes data of all drugs, approved/registered all over the globe. The information is unbiased, reliable and complete. You can refer to it for complete pharmacological profile and pharmaceutical bearing of the drug.Next I will be listing more of non official publications which includes lot of drug details , trade names along with generic names. Its shared thoroughly , legally unrestricted. The main ones are AMA, PDR, Modern Drug Encyclopaedia.
So that was in short a quick coverage and important details on Non Official Drug Compendia.
What next you should get to know about, something like drug nature and from where is it exactly derived, yes!! surely that gonna harbinger my next episode.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast SOURCES OF DRUG INFORMATION-2
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
Does your textbook cover all the minute details, I mean all, everything like trade names, drug information, purity, chemical, physical characteristics, etc? Well, if not, in today's episode you will get the knowledge of drug information sources, especially official ones. The collective term used for drug literature is "Drug Compendia". When I say its official, it means that government supervises it. The two main Official Drug Compendia are Pharmacopeia and Formulary.
Pharmacopoeia is supervised in a country by a set of chosen physicians. It covers drug details like chemical structure and properties, physical properties and molecular weight, assay techniques, drug preservation and storage methods, etc. Such a kind of information is very useful for drug regulators and drug manufacturers. Its hardly of any use to the clinical practitioners. Some well known ones are IP (Indian pharmacopoeia), BP (British pharmacopoeia), USP (United States Pharmacopoeia)
Next, I want to talk about Formulary, its supervised in a land by set of pharmacists. Very useful information like drug use indications, drug dose, dosage form, cautions, contraindications, side effects and much more is covered in this. Description of drug class precedes the discussion of drug itself. Some well known examples are British National Formulary (BNF), National Formulary of India (NFI). With this chit chat about Official Drug Compendia, next topic to be discussed is Non Official Drug Compendia, surely to be in next episode...I will be call it for the day, Wishing you all a great , safe weekend!!

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast SOURCES OF DRUG INFORMATION-1
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
How Drug therapy evolved? What are the sources of drug information? Responses to these fireshot questions will be given in today's episode.
Ancient Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese, Egyptian records emphasized the disease nature to be something supernatural, a bad omen, Then greek mythology of four humors of body changed this belief and made patient the main focus. Development of science in a rapid manner proved all diseases affected different organs, so this lead to the main centre of research to be disease. Then came Microscope invention, all in all importance of drug therapy was gaining importance and demanded in depth knowledge and clinical skill and expertise. Drugs could prove both harmful and useful. Next I will be shifting my discussions towards Sources of Drug Information , I would broadly classify these in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. Primary being original source of information. Secondary referring to review articles. tertiary is nothing but mix of both, summary embedded in text format.
I will be giving a valuable tip to do research or find a query response, it goes as, start from tertiary to secondary to primary , i.e. backway or reverse order and it will maximise your quest in a simplified, easy, convenient and organised manner. With this great tip to study, research and memorise, I will be hinting the next episode content and call it for the day.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast BRANCHES/DIVISIONS OF PHARMACOLOGY-3
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
What is the first thing or picture strikes you when you hear terms familiar something like Pharmacognosy, Pharmacogenetics or Pharmacy, etc. You might have heard these so important and many more like these, I will tell you about these and all familiar important branches of pharmacology today. Talking firstly about Pharmacognosy, its the study of drug sources, it also covers identification of drugs from different sources like animal and plant origin. Second, Pharmacogenetics is study of differences/ variations and resulting changes in drug responses and drug metabolism, which can occur at individual and/or at population level.Depending on sensitivity of individual, what is developed is individual Drug therapy. Right example at right time explains the whole story well! Next word of thought is all dedicated to details about Pharmacogenomics in which genomic technology is used to explore more drug characteristics, a good example tells it all....Next set of information is all about Pharmacoeconomics, centred around cost effectiveness of drug and drug therapy. As I approach the end talks, I will disclose my real talks about practical aspect of the subject too, about Pharmacy, in disguise I will spill over discussion focus towards Pharmaceutics. Then I will shift the conversation string towards Clinical Pharmacy and Closing words will sing songs about Biopharmaceutics.
I will give you a second to recollect and count the number of branches I told you all about today, give a try! Its countable on fingers, I am sure! With an indication to talk something different, new, crispy next time, I will call it for the day!

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast BRANCHES/DIVISIONS OF PHARMACOLOGY-2
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay.
Do you know What is exactly Chemotherapy? What do you study in Clinical Pharmacology? Why Pharmacoepidemiology is so important? All these questions will be answered to the best of your knowledge and satisfaction in today's episode.
Chemotherapy term was initially limited to drug effect upon microorganisms/parasites which are living/multiplying found in living organisms. Drugs possess selective toxicity for infecting organism or malignant cell at the same time, host stays unaffected. These drugs can be either pharmacodynamically effective or simply chemotherapeutic agents targeting only malignant cell or infective organism sparing the host.
Secondly, I will be talking about Clinical Pharmacology, it mainly covers clinical use of drugs, evaluation done in both diseased and non diseased patients. Useful insights are gained about drug potency, efficacy, appropriate use, dose and adverse effects of drugs. Many other aspects are covered in this field also which I will tell you. I will be summarizing key aspects and importance of Clinical Pharmacology.
A bonus set of information about one last branch for the day will be spoken about by me too.
The name of branch is "Pharmacoepidemiology" In this is studied effect of drugs on population. Until and unless not widely used by population, risk benefit ratio of drug cannot be determined, that is what marks the importance of this branch
More such important and informative branches will be discussed in next upcoming episodes that really ought to be known as a part/branch /subdivision of pharmacology.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast BRANCHES/DIVISIONS OF PHARMACOLOGY-1
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay. Do you know about Poison? Is their study a part of Pharmacology? What could be totally opposite branch?
These queries will be answered in today's episode. Let the talk commence..
Chemical actions can take place at two main levels, individual and environment Individual effects occurring at intended organs produce therapeutic effect while effects at unwanted target sites produce toxic or harmful effects. In environment drug effects spread from organism to other via food chain and toxicity accumulates.
On Individual level, the term for the branch is Medical Pharmacology or Toxicology while its Environmental Toxicology at the other end. Toxicology is a science of poisons. It is the branch of Pharmacology dealing with unwanted, undesirable effects, rather better to say, poisonous effects of drugs/chemicals which belong household, industry, pollution, agriculture, etc.
More interesting aspects like poison detection, prevention and cure. Symptoms and adverse effects are also considered. I would love to tell you two famous drug quotes related to toxicology.
Next I will be shifting my centre of talks from Toxicology to Pharmacotherapeutics. This branch deals with therapeutic and clinical application of subject knowledge along with drug information to relieve the patient from disease. Its a vaste field covering lot of shades like appropriate drug dose, time duration, signs, symptoms and disease stage, patient features and compliance and finally cure of disease. This shift of talk is so relieving not only for me but surely for you all too! with upcoming episode on more branches of pharmacology, let me wave y'all a b'bye.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast BASIC DIVISIONS IN PHARMACOLOGY
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast ! I am Dr Radhika Vijay, if you are wondering what are the most broad and basic divisions of the subject Pharmacology, you will find it all in today's episode. Broadly, Pharmacology can be divided into Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics. Pharmacodynamics covers all details and lets us know ," What the drug does to the body?" On the other hand, Pharmacokinetics is the ADME study, it covers complete drug movement inside the body, telling about all the four processes in detail, Absorption, Distribution , Metabolism and Excretion. All in all, we get to know, "What body does to the drug?" With the help of two examples for each of these divisions, I will clearly describe the whole description and points. After telling you all about these broad pharmacological divisions, I will be throwing light on the Golden connection of Pharmaceutics, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacotherapeutics. Its a chain connection step by step with a wonderful description so that you can memorize nicely and understand. fully. On this point of discussion, your query is definite to arise about other branches discussion which you know or you have. ever heard about. Well, no worries, with a promise to lighten up next school of thought with details about other branches, I will humbly depart today.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast DRUG (Definition & About)
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast ! I am Dr Radhika Vijay, in today's episode I will be answering questions as to What is a drug? How do you define a drug and whether it is same as medicine?
Medicines have always been a close companion of man from birth till death.Purpose of medicine is to provide relief and comfort to man. Drug is derived from french term. Broadly speaking, it is a chemical substance which affects living systems . used to prevent, diagnose or cure a disease. But such a definition is not satisfactory. WHO defines it very nicely and completely as "Any substance or product which is used or intended to be used to modify or explore physiological systems or pathological states for the benefit of recipient."
Safe , sound and complete knowledge of all the different drug aspects is highly advised and recommended. Finishing with furnished drug details and fine explanations, I will be laying next topics' foundation by telling the importance of knowing the different divisions/ subdivisions/ branches of pharmacology.

Is Pharmacology Difficult Podcast INTRODUCTION/LAUNCH EPISODE
Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay, I welcome you all to. History is history, Prehistorically people used crude drugs, substances to cure their ailments, diseases, etc. They superstitiously believed that most of the diseases were due to excess of bile and blood in body. Slowly, eventually, scientific belief and observation took over this old school of thought. In 18th century in British continent, literature evolved as a product of many experiments etc, the old book evolved is named as "Materia medica". Its a pioneer in literature in this subject. Still theoretical basis and hypothesis lacked to describe mechanism of action and true nature of drugs. Pioneering in this field was done by Francois Magendie, Claude Bernard, Rudolf Buccheim and Oswald Schiemedberg in variety of manner. From then till date, there has been revolutionary changes in this field.
Pharmacology is broken in greek terms, Pharmacon and Logos. its the study of chemical substances that alter mechanism in living beings through chemical processes by binding to the regulatory molecules. Further I will be describing more aspects of this branch of science, and its coverage widespread to affect living systems of humans and animals, also drug use, drug effects, etc. Finally I will derive a proper definition for the term "PHARMACOLOGY", leaving a quest to know more especially about the term "Drug", but that will unfold another story in another episode. With these remarks, i mark the conclusion of today's episode.
