Firing Squad: InSquad's Alex Svinov
Tech hiring is in kind of a weird place right now. Newsworthy layoffs, artificial intelligence threats, and a down economy mean a lot of indecision and uncertainty. Many companies are just pushing pause as a result. All this makes for a tricky environment for any and all startups looking to place high-tech workers. InSquad, a one-click solution to source and hire top-quality vetted remote software developers, ain’t scared though. That’s why CEO Alex Svinov decided to face the Firing Squad. He thinks he has a better mousetrap than the likes of Upwork, Turing, Andela, and many others. Is he right? Gotta listen to find out.

Ep 538: The Rise Of Short-Form Video
Over the last few years, TikTok has driven a revolution in short-form video content, racking up billions of views and forcing its competitors to adopt similar formats. Recent data, ironically released by Google, has also highlighted that a significant percentage of young people prefer to do their research on TikTok and Instagram instead of using Google.
However, while a few employers are doing a great job in this area, overall, there is still very little recruitment marketing or employer branding content on these platforms.
So what do employers need to do to connect with the millions of people consuming short-form views effectively, and what part should this type of content play in recruitment marketing and employer branding strategies?
My guest this week is Omar Khateeb, Founder and CEO at JobPixel. JobPixel is helping many employers to embrace short-form video content, and Omar has expert insights to share on what works and how to build effective workflows for this type of content.
In the interview, we discuss:
The current state of the market and the consequences of overhiring
How employer branding is evolving to meet the current challenges
The critical importance of creating authentic video content
Showcasing the good, the bad and the ugly.
The evolution of Day in the Life videos
How does short-form video fit in strategically?
Many people research companies after they have applied, not before
What makes great content
Having the right tooling and process to capture video
The impact of AI on content creation
What is the future of video for recruitment marketing and employer branding?

Ep 537: Strategic Workforce Planning
One of the key themes I've observed emerging over the last few years is the need for employers to think about talent holistically. To achieve this, progressive organizations are already breaking down the barriers between talent acquisition, talent management, and L&D. The central tenet is Strategic Workforce Planning (SWP).
So what does effective SWP look like, how is AI changing thought processes, and what role does Talent Acquisition need to play?
My guest this week is Sadhana Bhide, Strategic Workforce Planning Subject Matter Expert at Faethm by Pearson. Sadhana has expert insights to share on the current state and future development of SWP, and this is a must-listen for TA leaders everywhere.
In the interview, we discuss:
What is SWP, and why is it so important?
Unique strategic advantages
Engaged workforces
The 6 Bs that underpin SWP
The impact of AI on jobs
What role should Talent Acquisition play in SWP?
Common roadblocks and challenges
Best practices to measure success

Getting Inclusive AF with Michelle Rhee
In this episode, Jackye flies solo with Michelle Rhee. Michelle Rhee is cofounder of BuildWithin, a software platform that provides employers with the ability to create and manage apprenticeship and employee learning programs covering everything from software development to digital marketing. There are currently more than 40,000 people across the US using the BuildWithin platform.
After nearly 20 years of working in educational nonprofits and later serving as DC’s first Chancellor of the 50,000+ student public school district, Michelle is uniquely familiar with the educational and workforce development needs required by today’s companies – especially as AI transforms the workplace and the cost of a college degree continues to price out the average minimum-wage earner. Michelle is especially passionate about modern tech apprenticeships and how they are being used to bring marginalized people (e.g., people of color, retirees, neuro-diverse, veterans, etc.) into the technology workforce and provide a reliable pathway to the middle class.

F*ck Interviews w/Stephane Rivard
We first met Steph and the Hiring Branch at the Unleash America in Las Vegas. They hosted a bunch of HR podcasters from every corner of the globe, right in the heart of the iconic High Roller!
A pioneering force in the Canadian HR tech landscape, they took note of a simple yet significant truth: people don't like interviews. This realization sparked a desire to challenge the status quo and to reimagine the conventional hiring process.
Tracing their roots back to training for soft skills in call centres, the evolution of Hiring Branch was organic. Their expertise naturally extended to evaluating these same soft skills in a hiring context, thus creating a unique niche in the industry.
In a world where a single company can receive a staggering 300,000 applicants annually, one can't help but wonder: how do you sift through this multitude to identify who possesses the crucial soft skills, such as a knack for sales?
Comparing the soft skills of applicants against those of model employees, enabling them to evaluate the presence of mirrored skills among job seekers. This novel approach has proved to be an efficient way to uncover potential talent in the vast sea of candidates.

Firing Squad: SHAZAMME's Rick Maré
Landing pages? Wait, did I hear you correctly? A platform for landing pages?
That's correct and, in this Deja, vu moment Rick Maré and the team over at SHAZAMME are betting on a platform that helps hiring companies build better landing pages quicker. No question, this is definitely a case of "what is old is new again", but has the idea run full circle? Has it lost its luster or is it just in time? Will Rick receive big applause, a golf clap, or the FIRING SQUAD?
You gotta listen to find out.

Peak Geezer Performance w/ Jason Cochran and Ira Wolfe

You know (and love) two of the podcasters (Chad & Cheese) but you may not be familiar with the other two: Ira Wolfe and Jason Cochran, co-hosts of The Geeks, Geezers, and Googlization Show. Everything from AI to automation to … ah, hell, there were too many German beers and links of sausage to remember, but trust me, it was entertaining. Gern geschehen!

Ep 528: Social Mobility Via Talent Engagement
It's very encouraging that an increasing number of employers are committing to play their part in improving social mobility. It is becoming clear, though, that transactional and short term attempts at talent engagement do not yield the results needed for employers or the communities they seek to engage.
So what can employers learn from nonprofits that achieve positive outcomes that do improve social mobility?
My guest this week is Irene Shih, CEO of Minds Matter Bay Area. This education nonprofit connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college. Minds Matter Bay Area has been incredibly successful with its mission, and Irene has some critical learnings to share that employers focusing on social mobility will find extremely valuable.
In the interview, we discuss:
What is college undermatching, and why is it important to solve it
The importance of networks
What are the most significant barriers to top college entrance for low-income students?
Economic connectedness and cross-class friendships
What are the interventions that lift people out of poverty?
Positive outcomes
Trust and relationships
The importance of long-term talent engagement and why transactional approaches don't work.
