The affluent west of the city was prosperous and wealthy, but in contrast the east was an area of poverty, crime and disease. Life expectancy was low, and the streets were filled with the homeless, the destitute and the sick.When the American author Jack London ventured into the East End in the summer of 1902 to research the hopeless living conditions so typical of the area, he was to witness such sights as the cramped living conditions in shabby Frying Pan Alley, the revolting menial tasks that inmates of the Whitechapel casual ward carried out to pay for a dismal bed and a frugal meal of bread and ‘skilly’. In his book “The People of the Abyss”, a written account of his experiences, he relayed the tale of Dan Cullen, a resident of one of Whitechapel’s municipal dwellings, whose worsening health had forced him to move into the old Temperance Hospital, near Euston station. Jack had witnessed the sorry sight of the homeless sheltering under Tower Bridge and others trying to sleep by the steps of Christ Church in Spitalfields. He had tasted coffee and tea that was close in appearance to dirty dishwater and bore little resemblance to anything his readers might have drunk, and he had seen desperately hungry men and women pawing their way through the filthiest of meat scraps outside a butcher’s shop in Aldgate. In short, he had, if only briefly, lived the life of one of the people of the abyss, and had witnessed the horrendous life that circumstance had forced them to endure.As well as his vivid written descriptions of the East End, Jack London also photographed a considerable number of evocative scenes to complement the text. These well-known images have been frequently reprinted over the years, often to illustrate books about Jack the Ripper and the East End in general.But where exactly were these photographs taken? Jack London gives very little detail about the locations, choosing to caption the images vaguely as “A house to let” or the similarly ambiguous “Where the children grow up”. Gabriel Rotello (born Feb. 9, 1963) is an American writer, producer and director. He was raised in Danbury, CT, attended Knox College in Galesburg, IL, Carlton College in Northfield MN, and was an exchange student at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal.After graduating from college he moved to New York City where he became a keyboard player, musical director and producer, working with many prominent rock and R&B artists.In 1989 at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Rotello founded OutWeek Magazine in New York and became its editor-in-chief. OutWeek quickly became a focus of gay and AIDS activism, sparking many controversies and breaking important national stories. During his tenure at OutWeek, Rotello hired many young lesbian and gay writers who went on to become well-known authors and editors, including Sarah Pettit, Jim Provenzano, Michelangelo Signorile, Victoria Starr, David Kirby, Dale Peck, James St James and Karl Soehnlein. In 1992 Rotello became the first openly gay op-ed columnist for a major American newspaper, New York Newsday, for which he received the GLADD Award in 1995 as Outstanding Journalist. He was also a long-time columnist for The Advocate and has contributed to many publications including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Village Voice, The Nation, The New Scientist, and the Huffington Post.In 1997 Dutton published Rotello's seminal study of AIDS epidemiology and prevention, "Sexual Ecology: AIDS and the Destiny of Gay Men." In 1957 little seven-year-old Maria Ridulph was kidnapped from the small town of Sycamore, Illinois, while playing with her eight-year-old friend, Kathy Sigman. The brazen audacity of this heinous crime shocked the country and made national headlines for months. So sensational was the crime that daily updates were required by President Eisenhower and J. The case, nicknamed “Norjack” by the FBI as it involved the hijacking of a Northwest Orient 727 Airliner, would create a folk hero, if not a legend, of a mysterious man who would be immortalized by the name D.B. Cooper.This fascinating case has garnered a myriad of colorful and interesting suspects. One of the “dark horse” suspects who emerged over the years was a member of the most elite Special Forces unit created by the United States Government to serve during the war in Vietnam: a secret and covert unit called the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG). This rather benign-sounding name served as a thin veil, masking what was known to a few as the “black ops” unit in Vietnam.Many of the soldiers who served in this elite unit consider one of their own to be the infamous D.B. Cooper who hijacked Northwest Orient Flight 305; demanded a ransom of $200,000 in cash; and jumped out of the lowered aft staircase of the plane into the stormy night, never to be seen again.
